Mexico is one of North America’s great mountain countries. Its landscape includes enormous stratovolcanoes, pine-covered ridges, desert ranges, deeply carved canyons, tropical highlands, and isolated summits rising above both the Pacific and Gulf coasts.

The country’s mountains form the southern continuation of the North American Cordillera. The Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre Oriental extend along opposite sides of the Mexican Plateau, while the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt crosses the center of the country from west to east. Farther south, the Sierra Madre del Sur and Sierra Madre de Chiapas create rugged highlands extending toward Central America.

Published elevations differ among maps, government agencies, climbing guides, and topographic databases. Popocatépetl, for example, is frequently listed at approximately 5,426 meters, while Iztaccíhuatl is often given as approximately 5,230 meters. Pico de Orizaba

Pico de Orizaba, also known by its Nahuatl name Citlaltépetl, is Mexico’s highest mountain and the third-highest summit in North America. It rises dramatically above the border between Puebla and Veracruz.

The mountain is a massive stratovolcano with a deeply cut summit crater and remaining glacial ice. Its extraordinary prominence of approximately 4,922 meters makes it one of the most topographically prominent mountains on Earth.

Climbing Pico de Orizaba is a serious mountaineering objective. The traditional northern approach involves steep snow or ice, glacier travel, crampons, an ice axe, proper acclimatization, and strong route-finding skills.

Popocatépetl

Popocatépetl is Mexico’s second-highest mountain and one of the country’s most recognizable natural landmarks. Its name is commonly translated from Nahuatl as “Smoking Mountain,” an appropriate description for a volcano that regularly produces gas, ash, and explosive activity.

Iztaccíhuatl

Iztaccíhuatl is a long, multi-summited volcanic mountain immediately north of Popocatépetl. Its outline is traditionally compared to the body of a reclining woman, giving rise to its familiar nickname, the “Sleeping Woman.”

Its highest point, known as El Pecho or “the Breast,” reaches approximately 5,213 meters. The standard route from La Joya is a demanding high-altitude climb involving substantial elevation gain, loose volcanic terrain, exposed ridges, and potentially icy conditions.

Nevado de Toluca

Nevado de Toluca, or Xinantécatl, is an eroded stratovolcano southwest of Toluca. Its broad summit crater contains two well-known lakes: Laguna del Sol and Laguna de la Luna.

The highest point is Pico del Fraile on the crater rim. Although some lower trails are accessible to ordinary hikers, reaching the summit requires fitness, acclimatization, navigation skills, and appropriate equipment for rapidly changing weather.

Sierra Negra

Sierra Negra, also called Tliltépetl, rises close to Pico de Orizaba in Puebla. The mountain is visually overshadowed by its much larger neighbor but is notable for its elevation and scientific importance.

Its summit supports the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano, one of the world’s most important astronomical instruments operating at millimeter wavelengths. Access near the observatory may be restricted, and visitors should not assume that the summit road or scientific facilities are open to the public.

La Malinche

La Malinche, traditionally called Matlalcuéyetl, is a prominent volcano between Puebla and Tlaxcala. Its long standard trail climbs through pine forest before emerging onto exposed volcanic slopes below the summit.

The mountain is frequently used as an acclimatization climb before attempts on Iztaccíhuatl or Pico de Orizaba. Although it is generally a hiking objective in dry conditions, the high elevation, cold, wind, loose rock, and occasional snow should not be underestimated.

Cofre de Perote

Cofre de Perote, or Naucampatépetl, is a broad volcanic mountain in Veracruz. Unlike the nearly symmetrical cone of nearby Pico de Orizaba, Cofre de Perote has an irregular summit crowned by a distinctive rock formation.

The mountain’s forests, grasslands, and high-elevation habitats are protected within Cofre de Perote National Park. Roads reach high onto the mountain, but summit conditions can still be cold, foggy, wet, or icy.

Nevado de Colima

Nevado de Colima is the highest summit in Jalisco and one of Mexico’s most prominent mountains. Despite its name, most of the mountain lies in Jalisco rather than the neighboring state of Colima.

It stands near the younger and more active Volcán de Colima, also known as Volcán de Fuego. The two mountains should not be confused: Nevado de Colima is the higher, older peak, while Volcán de Colima is the frequently active cone to its south.

Cerro Tláloc

Most visitors should climb with a qualified local guide. Previous experience with crampons, an ice axe, roped glacier travel, and self-arrest is strongly recommended.

Iztaccíhuatl

Iztaccíhuatl is commonly climbed from La Joya. The route is generally non-technical when dry, but it is long, strenuous, and exposed to severe high-altitude weather.

Snow and ice can transform the route into a mountaineering climb. Climbers should acclimatize beforehand and be prepared to turn around if clouds, wind, lightning, or poor visibility develop.

La Malinche

The best season depends on the mountain and region.

For many central Mexican volcanoes, the dry season from approximately October through March offers the clearest skies and most stable hiking conditions. Temperatures can be very cold at night, and snow or ice may occur on the highest summits.

CONANP generally identifies January through May as the principal mountaineering period for Pico de Orizaba, although glacier and weather conditions must always be assessed immediately before a climb.

The summer rainy season commonly brings afternoon clouds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, muddy trails, and reduced visibility. Early starts are essential throughout the year.

Northern desert ranges can become dangerously hot during summer. Winter and spring are often better for lower-elevation hikes, although high mountains in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Baja California may receive snow.

Southern mountain regions are warmer and more humid. Trails in Chiapas and Oaxaca can be wet, overgrown, and slippery during the rainy season.
