The Brooks Range is an immense Arctic mountain system stretching across northern Alaska and into Canada’s Yukon Territory. Remote, roadless across most of its length, and almost entirely above the Arctic Circle, the range forms one of the wildest mountain landscapes in North America.

Running roughly east to west for about 600–700 miles (970–1,125 kilometers), depending on how its boundaries are defined, the Brooks Range extends from near the Chukchi Sea in western Alaska toward the northern Yukon in Canada. Its mountains separate Alaska’s Arctic North Slope from the forested valleys and river systems farther south.

Unlike the dramatically higher Alaska Range surrounding Denali, the Brooks Range rarely exceeds 8,000 feet. Its highest summit, Mount Isto, reaches approximately 8,975 feet (2,736 meters). What the range lacks in extreme elevation, however, it makes up for in remoteness, rugged terrain, Arctic ecology, and enormous wilderness areas.

Much of the Brooks Range remains without roads, developed trails, or permanent recreation facilities. Large portions are protected within Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Noatak National Preserve, and other public lands.

📍 Location and Geography

The Brooks Range crosses northern Alaska in a broad arc between the Arctic coastal plain to the north and the great interior river basins to the south.

Its crest forms an important drainage divide. Rivers originating on the northern side generally flow toward the Arctic Ocean, while waterways beginning south of the divide eventually enter river systems such as the Kobuk and Yukon.

The range contains numerous named mountain groups and subdivisions. Among them are the De Long Mountains, Endicott Mountains, Philip Smith Mountains, and Romanzof Mountains.

The eastern Brooks Range contains many of its highest summits and some of its largest glaciers. Farther west, elevations generally decrease as the mountains approach the Chukchi Sea.

📏 Highest Mountains of the Brooks Range

The highest mountains occur primarily in the eastern part of the range.

Mount Isto

Mount Isto is now recognized as the highest summit in the Brooks Range. Modern measurements place its elevation at approximately 8,975 feet (2,736 meters).

The mountain rises in the Romanzof Mountains within Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

For many years, maps listed nearby Mount Chamberlin as the range’s highest mountain. More precise aerial surveying completed in the 2010s showed that Mount Isto is higher.

Mount Hubley

Mount Hubley is another major summit of the eastern Brooks Range and lies only a few miles from Mount Isto.

Modern elevation measurements placed Hubley above Mount Chamberlin, making it one of the highest mountains in Arctic Alaska.

Mount Chamberlin

Mount Chamberlin was historically considered the highest Brooks Range summit because of older topographic measurements. Improved surveying demonstrated that both Mount Isto and Mount Hubley are higher.

The change is a good example of how modern remote-sensing technology can refine mountain elevations even in landscapes that have been mapped for decades.

🪨 Geology

The Brooks Range has a complicated geological history involving plate tectonics, ancient ocean basins, crustal fragments, folding, faulting, uplift, and glaciation.

Much of the mountain belt developed during the Mesozoic Era, particularly as tectonic plates and crustal terranes converged in what geologists call the Brookian orogeny.

Compression folded and thrust enormous packages of rock northward, creating the structural framework of the modern range. Continued tectonic activity and uplift occurred during later geological periods.

The rocks themselves can be considerably older than the mountains in their present form. National Park Service geologists note that rocks within the central Brooks Range preserve fossils and geological materials dating back hundreds of millions of years.

Sedimentary rocks are widespread, including limestone, shale, sandstone, and conglomerate. Metamorphic rocks occur in several areas, while granite is particularly prominent in places such as the dramatic Arrigetch Peaks.

Glacial Sculpting

Glaciers dramatically modified the Brooks Range during the Pleistocene ice ages.

Glaciers and permanent snowfields remain in parts of the range today, especially around the higher mountains of the eastern Brooks Range.

🌿 Flora and Fauna

The Brooks Range crosses several Arctic and sub-Arctic ecological zones.

On the northern side of the range, treeless tundra dominates the landscape. South-facing valleys and lower elevations can support shrubs and pockets of boreal forest, particularly spruce.

Permafrost occurs extensively throughout the region. Because frozen ground restricts drainage, even relatively dry Arctic landscapes can contain wetlands, ponds, and saturated soils during summer.

Wildlife

The Brooks Range supports some of North America’s most recognizable northern wildlife.

Species found across different portions of the range include:

Large migratory herds travel through valleys, passes, foothills, and tundra associated with the range during their seasonal movements.

🏞️ Protected Wilderness

Much of the Brooks Range is protected within some of the largest wilderness areas in the United States.

Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve

Gates of the Arctic protects a vast section of the central Brooks Range.

Unlike most national parks, it has:

  • No roads entering the park
  • No maintained hiking trails
  • No established campgrounds
  • Few permanent visitor facilities within the wilderness

Backcountry travelers typically enter by bush plane, river, or on foot.

The park takes its name from two mountains—Frigid Crags and Boreal Mountain—that frame the North Fork of the Koyukuk River. Wilderness advocate Bob Marshall described this landscape during his explorations of northern Alaska.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The eastern Brooks Range dominates much of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The refuge encompasses mountains, glaciers, rivers, tundra, boreal forest, wetlands, and the Arctic coastal plain.

Mount Isto and several of the range’s highest summits lie within this protected landscape.

Noatak National Preserve

The western Brooks Range includes portions of Noatak National Preserve.

The Noatak River begins in the Brooks Range and flows hundreds of miles through an enormous largely undeveloped watershed toward Kotzebue Sound.

🥾 Hiking and Exploring the Brooks Range

The Brooks Range is very different from developed hiking destinations with trailheads, marked paths, shelters, and nearby towns.

In many areas, there are no trails at all.

Backcountry travel may involve crossing tundra, loose rock, wetlands, rivers, brush, snowfields, and steep mountain passes while navigating without marked routes.

Travelers commonly reach remote areas by charter aircraft.

Gates of the Arctic Backpacking

Gates of the Arctic offers almost unlimited possibilities for experienced wilderness backpackers, but visitors generally design their own routes.

Cross-country hiking can be considerably slower than trail hiking because of tussocks, stream crossings, brush, marshy ground, and uneven terrain.

River Travel

Rivers provide another traditional means of traveling through the Brooks Range.

The Alatna, Noatak, Kobuk, John, North Fork Koyukuk, and other waterways pass through spectacular mountain landscapes.

River conditions vary significantly with season, rainfall, snowmelt, and location. Remote river trips require strong wilderness and boating skills.

Dalton Highway

The Dalton Highway provides one of the few opportunities to reach the Brooks Range by road.

The highway travels north from the Fairbanks region toward Alaska’s North Slope and crosses the range at Atigun Pass, at approximately 4,739 feet.

The highway offers access to mountain scenery around the central-eastern Brooks Range, although much of the surrounding landscape remains extremely remote.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

For most backcountry visitors, June through August offers the most practical travel conditions.

Summer brings extremely long daylight hours, and many lower valleys become largely snow-free.

However, Arctic summer conditions should not be underestimated.

Travelers may encounter:

  • Cold rain
  • Strong wind
  • Fog
  • Sudden temperature drops
  • Remaining snowfields
  • High rivers
  • Wet tundra
  • Mosquitoes and other biting insects

Snow is possible in the mountains even during summer.

Late August can bring cooler temperatures, autumn colors, fewer insects, and increasing darkness. Freezing conditions and early snow also become progressively more likely.

Winter travel is an entirely different undertaking requiring specialized Arctic experience, equipment, and cold-weather survival skills.

🧭 History and the Brooks Range Name

People lived, traveled, hunted, and traded across northern Alaska long before modern maps gave the range its current English name.

The U.S. Geological Survey began systematic exploration and mapping of the region near the end of the 19th century. Survey parties traveled enormous distances by canoe, dog team, horseback, and on foot while documenting rivers, geology, mineral resources, and mountain geography.

The United States Board on Geographic Names adopted the name Brooks Range in 1925 in honor of Alfred Hulse Brooks, a prominent USGS geologist who headed geological work in Alaska during the early 20th century.

Brooks played a major role in developing scientific knowledge of Alaska’s geography and geology.
