Mount Adams

Rising above the rugged northern Presidential Range, Mount Adams is one of the most imposing mountains in New Hampshire. Modern lidar-based measurements place its summit at approximately 5,797 feet, making it the second-highest ranked peak in the state after Mount Washington.
Mount Adams is a classic White Mountains destination: steep approaches, enormous boulder fields, exposed alpine terrain, fragile tundra, and panoramic views across some of the wildest landscapes in New England. The mountain is considerably quieter than nearby Mount Washington, but reaching its summit entirely on foot demands a substantial climb.
Several trails approach Adams from the north, including the Air Line, Valley Way, Lowe’s Path, and the formidable King Ravine Trail. The mountain also forms a major stop on the Presidential Traverse, linking Mount Madison with Mount Jefferson and the higher Presidential ridge to the south.

ποΈ Where Is Mount Adams?
Mount Adams stands in northern New Hampshire within White Mountain National Forest and the northern portion of the Presidential Range.
It rises between Mount Madison to the northeast and Mount Jefferson to the southwest. Farther south are Mount Clay and the massive summit of Mount Washington.
The mountain’s eastern and southeastern slopes overlook the Great Gulf, one of the largest and most dramatic glacial cirques in the White Mountains. To the north lies King Ravine, another steep glacial basin that cuts deeply into the Mount Adams massif.
Together, these ravines give Adams a remarkably rugged appearance.
From many northern viewpoints, Mount Adams looks like a great rocky pyramid rising behind Madison and the surrounding forests.
π How High Is Mount Adams?
Modern lidar-derived measurements used by Peakbagger place Mount Adams at approximately 5,797.4 feet (1,767 meters).
Older maps commonly give an elevation of 5,774 feet, including historic U.S. Geological Survey measurements. As improved elevation data have become available, newer mountain databases have adopted the higher figure.
The difference explains why hikers may encounter several elevations for Mount Adams depending on the map, guidebook, or website they consult.
With roughly 865 feet of topographic prominence, Adams is a clearly independent summit.
Its key col is Edmands Col, the saddle separating the Adams area from the higher Mount Washington side of the Presidential Range.
π§ Nearest Higher Neighbor
Peakbagger lists the Nearest Higher Neighbor (NHN) of Mount Adams as TMP High Point (S), an unranked high point on the Mount Washington massif.
This point is higher than Mount Adams but does not have independent prominence and is not generally regarded as a separate mountain.
For practical geographic purposes, Mount Washington is therefore the dominant higher mountain associated with Adams.
Mount Washington is also Adams’ line parent.

Using modern lidar-based summit measurements, the highest ranked mountains in New Hampshire begin with:
- Mount Washington β approximately 6,287 feet
- Mount Adams β approximately 5,797 feet
- Mount Jefferson β approximately 5,714 feet
This makes Mount Adams the highest summit in the northern Presidentials and the second-highest independently ranked mountain in New England after Mount Washington.
Its elevation also places much of the upper mountain well above treeline.
Hikers who begin amid dense northern forest therefore finish their climb in an environment resembling Arctic tundra.
πΊπΈ Why Is It Called Mount Adams?
Mount Adams is named for John Adams, the second president of the United States.
Its name forms part of the naming tradition that ultimately gave the Presidential Range its identity.
In 1820, a group traveling through the mountains applied presidential names to several prominent peaks. Because the highest mountain already carried George Washington’s name, the next highest was named for the second president, John Adams.
Other peaks were then named sequentially for later presidents:
- Mount Jefferson β Thomas Jefferson
- Mount Madison β James Madison
- Mount Monroe β James Monroe
The names gradually became established on maps during the 19th century.
Mount Adams also has several subsidiary summits and high points carrying names associated with the Adams family.
π¨βπ©βπ¦ The Adams Family Peaks
Mount Adams is surrounded by several subsidiary summits with unusually connected names.
Among them are:
- John Quincy Adams β named for John Adams’ son, who became the sixth U.S. president
- Abigail Adams β named for John Adams’ wife and first lady
- Sam Adams β named for Samuel Adams, the Revolutionary-era political figure and cousin of John Adams
These smaller peaks do not have enough prominence to rank alongside the main Mount Adams summit, but they make the mountain’s naming history particularly interesting.
John Quincy Adams lies on the southeastern side of the massif, while Abigail Adams is associated with the ridge toward Mount Madison and Sam Adams lies toward the western side.
πͺ¨ Geology of Mount Adams
Mount Adams forms part of the ancient Appalachian mountain system.
The Presidential Range is underlain largely by metamorphic and igneous rocks, including schist and granitic rocks that have experienced hundreds of millions of years of tectonic activity, uplift, and erosion.
The rocks exposed today are remnants of mountain-building events far older than the present landscape.
Later erosion removed immense amounts of overlying material, while repeated freezing and thawing broke exposed summit rock into the angular blocks and boulder fields hikers encounter today.
This process continues.
Water enters cracks in the bedrock, freezes, expands, and gradually loosens pieces of stone. Over long periods, repeated freeze-thaw cycles help create the rough talus that dominates the upper slopes.
π§ King Ravine
One of Mount Adams’ most spectacular features is King Ravine, a huge glacial cirque carved into the northern side of the mountain.
The ravine contains cliffs, boulder fields, caves beneath enormous rocks, and one of the most challenging established hiking routes in the White Mountains.
During the last Ice Age, glaciers profoundly reshaped the Presidentials. Ice widened valleys, excavated cirques, transported rock, and produced many of the steep-sided basins visible today.
King Ravine is one of the clearest examples.
From higher elevations, the ravine appears as an enormous amphitheater cut into Mount Adams.
For hikers inside it, the walls of the mountain seem to rise almost directly overhead.
π The Great Gulf
On the opposite side of the northern Presidential ridge lies the Great Gulf.
This immense glacial basin is surrounded by Mount Washington, Mount Clay, Mount Jefferson, Mount Adams, and Mount Madison.
Much of it is protected as the Great Gulf Wilderness.
The Great Gulf was among the first wilderness areas designated under the Wilderness Act of 1964 and remains one of the most spectacular backcountry landscapes in New Hampshire.
From Mount Adams, hikers can look across the gulf toward Mount Washington and the surrounding ridges, gaining an exceptional perspective on the glacial geography of the Presidentials.

A Mount Adams hike passes through several distinct ecological zones.
Elevation, exposure, wind, temperature, moisture, and soil depth all influence which plants and animals can survive on different parts of the mountain.
Northern Hardwood Forest
At lower elevations, hikers begin among trees such as:
- American beech
- Sugar maple
- Yellow birch
- Red maple
- Eastern hemlock
Wildlife may include white-tailed deer, black bears, porcupines, squirrels, woodland songbirds, and numerous smaller mammals.
As elevation increases, the character of the forest gradually changes.
Spruce-Fir Forest
Higher slopes become increasingly dominated by boreal species, particularly:
- Red spruce
- Balsam fir
- Paper birch
Mosses, ferns, bunchberry, and wood sorrel commonly grow beneath the trees.
These high-elevation spruce-fir forests provide important habitat for Bicknell’s thrush, one of the Northeast’s most distinctive mountain birds.
Bicknell’s thrush breeds primarily in dense high-elevation conifer forest, making the upper forests of the White Mountains especially important habitat.
Krummholz
Near treeline, the forest changes dramatically.
Spruce and fir become short, dense, twisted, and wind-shaped. These stunted trees are known collectively as krummholz, from a German term meaning βcrooked wood.β
Some seemingly tiny trees can be surprisingly old.
The intense winds, ice, snow, and short growing season prevent them from developing the tall forms found lower on the mountain.
Alpine Tundra
Eventually, trees disappear almost completely.
Mount Adams forms part of the extensive alpine tundra system of the Presidential Rangeβthe largest total alpine tundra environment in the eastern United States.
Plants capable of surviving here include:
- Diapensia
- Alpine azalea
- Mountain cranberry
- Mountain sandwort
- Lapland rosebay
- Alpine grasses
- Sedges
- Rushes
- Mosses
- Lichens
These plants remain close to the ground, where conditions are slightly less severe than they are a few feet above the surface.
The alpine growing season is extremely short, and some plants grow exceptionally slowly.
πΈ Protecting Mount Adams’ Alpine Plants
The toughness of alpine vegetation can be misleading.
Plants capable of surviving hurricane-force winds, deep winter cold, ice, and months of snow can still be badly damaged by hikers stepping on them.
Soils above treeline are thin, and recovery from trampling may take many years.
Hikers should remain on marked trails and durable rock surfaces whenever possible.
The Presidential alpine zone is also scientifically important because its isolated plant communities can help researchers study the effects of changing climate conditions.
As temperatures and ecological boundaries shift, alpine species have very little higher terrain available into which they can retreat.
π₯Ύ Hiking Mount Adams
Mount Adams has an unusually rich network of hiking trails.
Most direct routes begin near the Appalachia trailhead along U.S. Route 2 in Randolph.
Although there are several ways to reach the summit, none should be considered easy.
A typical ascent involves roughly 4,500 feet of elevation gain, long sections of rocky footing, and extensive exposure above treeline.
π Air Line Trail
The Air Line is one of the classic routes to Mount Adams.
From Appalachia, it climbs roughly 4.3 miles to the summit while gaining around 4,500 feet.
One of its highlights is Durand Ridge, where increasingly open terrain provides spectacular views into King Ravine.
The upper trail eventually joins the Gulfside Trail before continuing toward the summit.
Air Line is steep and demanding, particularly once it reaches exposed terrain. Navigation can also become more difficult when fog obscures cairns and trail signs.
Despite the difficulty, its dramatic ridge scenery makes Air Line one of the defining hikes of the northern Presidentials.
π² Valley Way
The Valley Way offers another popular approach.
It begins at Appalachia and climbs through forest toward Madison Spring Hut, which sits high in the col between Mount Adams and Mount Madison.
From the hut, hikers can continue toward Adams using the Gulfside Trail and other connecting routes.
The Valley Way approach is roughly 4.7 miles one way when combined with Gulfside and Air Line to reach the summit.
Although still strenuous, much of the lower route remains protected by forest, making it a common choice when compared with more exposed ridges.
β Star Lake Trail
The Star Lake Trail provides a steep route from Madison Spring Hut toward the Mount Adams summit.
Star Lake itself is a small mountain tarn tucked beneath the eastern side of Adams.
From the lake, the trail climbs sharply over rugged terrain.
This route is considerably steeper than its modest distance suggests and involves hands-on scrambling in places.
For experienced hikers in good weather, however, the setting beneath the huge rocky summit cone of Mount Adams is memorable.
π§ King Ravine Trail
The King Ravine Trail is among the most adventurous routes on Mount Adams.
It travels directly into the enormous northern cirque before climbing through a massive boulder field and ascending the steep headwall.
The route can involve:
- Boulder scrambling
- Large rock obstacles
- Steep climbing
- Difficult footing
- Significant exposure to weather
The Randolph Mountain Club describes the King Ravine route as featuring a dramatic and challenging scramble up the headwall.
This is not the ideal route for inexperienced hikers or wet conditions.
When dry and approached by properly prepared hikers, however, King Ravine offers one of the most extraordinary mountain experiences in New England.
π₯Ύ Lowe’s Path
Lowe’s Path is another historic trail on Mount Adams.
The route approaches the mountain from the northwest and eventually climbs toward Thunderstorm Junction and the summit.
It can also be combined with trails leading to Randolph Mountain Club facilities such as Gray Knob and Crag Camp.
Lowe’s Path is generally longer than Air Line but provides another classic way to explore the complex western side of the Adams massif.
π Madison Spring Hut
Madison Spring Hut lies between Mount Adams and Mount Madison at roughly 4,800 feet.
Operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club, it is one of the organization’s famous high-mountain huts.
The location makes it a useful landmark and route junction for hikers climbing either peak.
Many hikers combine Adams and Mount Madison in a single outing, using Valley Way to reach the hut before visiting one or both summits.
Despite the presence of the hut, hikers should remain self-sufficient. Weather above treeline can deteriorate quickly, and hut operating seasons vary.

Mount Adams is one of the major summits included in a Presidential Traverse.
A classic north-to-south traverse commonly includes:
- Mount Madison

- Mount Jefferson

- Mount Eisenhower
- Mount Pierce
The Appalachian Trail follows the Gulfside Trail through much of this portion of the northern Presidential Range.
A full traverse involves long distances, thousands of feet of climbing, difficult footing, and extensive time above treeline.
Mount Adams is often one of its most physically demanding summits because of the steep climb required to reach it from the northern trailheads.

Weather is a critical consideration on Mount Adams.
The summit lies only a few miles from Mount Washington and experiences the same broad high-elevation weather system that makes the Presidential Range infamous.
Conditions can include:
- Extremely strong winds
- Dense fog
- Heavy rain
- Sudden temperature drops
- Thunderstorms
- Snow and sleet
- Ice
- Rime
- Dangerous wind chills
Weather on the high summits can be drastically different from conditions in the valleys.
Before hiking, visitors should check the Mount Washington Observatory Higher Summits Forecast, which is specifically prepared for the high elevations of New Hampshire.
A warm, calm morning at Appalachia does not guarantee similar conditions above treeline.
π§ Hiking Safety
Mount Adams demands preparation even during summer.
Hikers should generally carry:
- Waterproof and windproof outer layers
- Insulating clothing
- Hat and gloves
- Adequate water
- Food
- Headlamp
- Map and compass or another reliable navigation system
- First-aid supplies
- Emergency equipment appropriate to conditions
Once above treeline, opportunities for shelter become limited.
Clouds can reduce visibility until the next cairn becomes difficult to locate, while wind can make travel exhausting or dangerous.
Turning around before reaching the summit is sometimes the safest decision.

For most hikers, summer through early fall provides the most favorable conditions.
Summer
July and August generally offer the longest daylight and the most dependable hiking window.
Even then, temperatures can fall sharply and strong winds or thunderstorms can develop.
Early Fall
September can be spectacular.
Cool, clear days sometimes provide exceptional long-distance views, while the forests below begin displaying fall color.
Winter conditions can return surprisingly early to the summit, however.
Late Spring
Snowfields and ice may persist well after lower elevations have entered spring.
High water, mud, unstable snow, and ice can complicate routes.
Winter
Winter ascents are serious mountaineering undertakings.
Extreme wind chills, deep snow, ice, drifting, whiteouts, and short daylight hours require specialized equipment, skills, and conservative decision-making.
π Is Mount Adams a New Hampshire 4,000-Footer?
Yes.
Mount Adams is one of the 48 traditionally recognized New Hampshire 4,000-footers.
It exceeds the 4,000-foot elevation threshold by more than 1,700 feet and has far more than the approximately 200 feet of prominence required for an independently ranked summit.
It is also one of the most challenging mountains on the list.
Unlike Mount Washington, Adams has no road or railway to its summit. Anyone standing on top has generally arrived on foot.

On a clear day, Mount Adams provides outstanding views across northern New England.
Immediately northeast lies Mount Madison.
To the southwest, Mount Jefferson rises beyond Edmands Col, followed by Mount Clay and the massive summit cone of Mount Washington.
