
The Presidential Range is the highest and most famous mountain group in New Hampshireās White Mountains, stretching across a rugged landscape of exposed ridges, glacial ravines, dense spruce-fir forests, fragile alpine tundra, and some of the most severe weather in the eastern United States.
At its center rises Mount Washington, the 6,288-foot (1,917-meter) high point of New Hampshire and the tallest mountain in the northeastern United States.
Surrounding it are some of New Englandās best-known peaks, including Mount Adams, Mount Jefferson, Mount Madison, Mount Monroe, Mount Eisenhower, and Mount Pierce.
Together, these mountains form the classic Presidential Traverse, one of the most demanding and celebrated hiking routes in the Northeast.
But the Presidential Range is much more than a hiking challenge.
It contains the largest total area of alpine tundra in the eastern United States, protects rare Arctic-alpine plants left behind by colder post-glacial climates, provides breeding habitat for birds such as Bicknellās thrush, and contains a complex geological record of ancient marine sediments, continental collision, metamorphism, mountain building, and Ice Age glaciation.
And then there is the weather.
On April 12, 1934, observers on Mount Washington measured a 231 mph wind gust. A stronger gust has since been recorded elsewhere in the world, but the Mount Washington measurement remains the fastest wind ever recorded at a staffed weather station.
The result is a mountain range where relatively modest elevations produce genuinely Alpine conditionsāand where preparation matters as much as fitness.

The exact number of āPresidential Range peaksā varies slightly depending on whether subsidiary summits and the southern extensions toward Mount Jackson and Mount Webster are counted. That is why different maps and hiking lists sometimes give different totals.
š Where Is the Presidential Range?
The Presidential Range lies in northern New Hampshire within the White Mountain National Forest.
The main ridge runs generally north-south.
Its northern end rises above the communities and valleys around:

Its southern end descends toward:

Mount Washington occupies the central high point.

Adams often feels wilder than Mount Washington because there are no roads, railways, or major summit buildings.

Mount Eisenhower is one of the most visually distinctive Southern Presidentials.
Its broad, rounded dome reaches approximately 4,780 feet.
The mountain was historically known as Mount Pleasant.
In 1969, the New Hampshire legislature renamed it in honor of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The summit is reached by a short loop from the main Presidential ridge route.

Mount Pierce reaches roughly 4,310 feet near the southern end of the core Presidential ridge.
It was originally known as Mount Clinton, honoring New York governor DeWitt Clinton.

Mount Pierce is frequently recommended as an introduction to hiking in the Southern Presidentials.
The Crawford Path provides a comparatively straightforward route, although snow, ice, wind, and cloud can still create serious conditions.

The boundary between the āmain Presidentialsā and surrounding peaks can become confusing.
Mount Clay rises between Jefferson and Washington but lacks enough prominence to qualify for New Hampshireās standard 4,000-footer list.
Mount Franklin stands south of Monroe but is similarly treated as a subsidiary summit.
Mount Jackson and Mount Webster lie farther south near Crawford Notch.
Some Presidential Traverse itineraries extend over Jackson or Webster, while other definitions consider the core traverse complete at Mount Pierce or Crawford Path.
This explains why one source may describe a 19-mile Presidential Traverse while another describes a route exceeding 23 miles.
š How the Presidential Peaks Got Their Names
Mount Washington received its present name first.
The exact origin is somewhat uncertain, but the name was in written use by 1792 and honored George Washington.
The other famous presidential names appeared during an expedition in 1820.
A group from Lancaster, New Hampshire hired legendary guide Ethan Allen Crawford and explored the high ridge.
From Mount Washington, they assigned names to several surrounding summits.
The basic system was remarkably simple.
After Washington, the mountains were named in presidential order:
- Adams
- Jefferson
- Madison
- Monroe
Once the group ran out of presidents who had served up to that point, they named another summit for Benjamin Franklin and another Mount Pleasant.
Mount Pleasant later became Mount Eisenhower.

The seven major peaks now named for U.S. presidents are:

Not every politically named mountain in the range honors a president.

The Presidential Range is geologically much more complicated than the popular nickname āGranite Stateā might suggest.
Much of the high ridge consists of metamorphic rocks, especially schist, quartzite, gneiss, and related formations.
Important bedrock units include portions of the:

- Madrid Formation
These rocks began largely as marine sediments deposited hundreds of millions of years ago.

One of the most important events in Presidential Range geology was the Acadian Orogeny, roughly 400 million years ago.
During this period, tectonic collisions affected the ancient eastern margin of North America.

The modern Presidential Range represents only the deeply eroded roots of those ancient mountains.

Continental glaciers covered the White Mountains repeatedly during the Pleistocene.
The last major ice sheet retreated from New England roughly 12,000ā15,000 years ago.
Glacial erosion helped create many of the Presidential Rangeās most dramatic features.

Great Gulf is one of the most dramatic glacial landscapes in the White Mountains.
The enormous cirque cuts into the eastern side of the Presidential Range beneath Mount Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and Madison.
Today, the Great Gulf Wilderness protects much of this rugged basin.
Trails through the area are generally longer, steeper, and less forgiving than the heavily traveled approaches from Pinkham Notch or Crawford Notch.
The Great Gulf Headwall in particular is a serious hiking route.
For experienced hikers seeking wilderness character, the Great Gulf offers one of the best places to appreciate the immense scale of the northern Presidentials.
šļø Tuckerman Ravine
Tuckerman Ravine is the most famous glacial cirque in the Presidential Range.
It lies on the southeast side of Mount Washington.
The ravine is famous for:
- Steep headwalls
- Waterfalls
- Spring snowfields
- Backcountry skiing
- Avalanche terrain
- Summer hiking
The Tuckerman Ravine Trail is one of the best-known routes toward Mount Washington.
However, winter and spring conditions are very different from summer hiking.
Snow slabs, falling ice, undermined snow, crevasses in the snowpack, and avalanches can make the ravine hazardous.
š§ Huntington Ravine
Huntington Ravine lies north of Tuckerman Ravine.
Its summer hiking route is among the most difficult maintained trails in New England.
The headwall involves sustained scrambling over steep slabs and ledges.
It should not be treated as simply a harder alternative to Tuckerman Ravine.
Wet rock, ice, strong wind, or thunderstorms can make the route extremely dangerous.
In winter, Huntington Ravine becomes a technical climbing venue rather than a normal hiking route.
š¬ļø Why Is the Weather So Extreme?
Mount Washington and the surrounding Presidentials occupy an unusually exposed position.
Several factors combine:
- High elevation relative to surrounding New England
- Lack of similarly high terrain nearby
- Frequent passage of major storm systems
- Moisture arriving from the Atlantic
- Strong pressure gradients
- Mountain-induced acceleration of wind

The Presidential ridge essentially projects into the lower atmosphere.
Weather that produces ordinary rain and wind in nearby valleys can create freezing fog, hurricane-force gusts, snow, and ice at summit level.

On April 12, 1934, Mount Washington Observatory recorded a wind gust of:
231 mph / 372 km/h
For decades, it stood as the world record for a directly measured surface wind.
A stronger 253 mph gust was later measured at Barrow Island, Australia, during Tropical Cyclone Olivia in 1996.
Mount Washingtonās 231 mph gust nevertheless retains an extraordinary distinction:
It remains the fastest wind speed measured at a staffed weather station.
The measurement was taken by Observatory personnel using specially designed equipment capable of surviving heavy icing.

The Mount Washington Observatoryās 1991ā2020 climate normals illustrate just how severe conditions can be.
The summit averages approximately:

- 34.9 mph annual wind speed

Julyāthe warmest monthāhas a normal monthly average temperature of only about:

Snow has been recorded during nearly every month of the year.
The mountain therefore should never be approached based solely on valley temperatures.
A warm summer day in North Conway or Gorham can coexist with cold, wet, windy conditions on the Presidential ridge.
āļø Fog & Visibility
Fog is another defining feature.
The upper Presidentials frequently enter cloud.
When this happens, visibility can drop from sweeping panoramas to only a few yards.
Above treeline, the landscape offers few obvious visual reference points.
Trails are often marked with stone cairns, but hikers can still lose the route in:

- Blowing snow
- Darkness
- Whiteout conditions
A map, compass, and navigation skills remain important even on heavily traveled trails.

The Presidential Range protects one of the most remarkable high-elevation ecosystems in eastern North America.
The U.S. Forest Service identifies the Presidential Range as having the largest total area of alpine tundra environment in the eastern United States.
Its Alpine Garden also contains one of the richest assemblages of Arctic-alpine plants in the region.
The ecological transition with elevation is dramatic.
A hike from valley floor to summit can pass through several biological worlds in only a few miles.
š³ Northern Hardwood Forest
At lower elevations, hikers enter classic northern New England forest.
Common trees include:
- Sugar maple
- American beech
- Yellow birch
- Red maple
- Eastern hemlock
These forests provide habitat for wildlife such as:
- White-tailed deer
- Black bear
- Porcupine
- Red squirrel
- Numerous warblers and woodland birds
Autumn produces the famous red, orange, and yellow foliage associated with the White Mountains.
š² Spruce-Fir Forest
With increasing elevation, hardwood forest gradually gives way to colder red spruce and balsam fir forest.
The trees become shorter as elevation increases.
Weather plays an increasingly dominant role.
Strong wind, heavy snow, and rime ice damage tree crowns and produce dense, tangled stands.
This high-elevation spruce-fir habitat is ecologically important throughout northern New England.
š¬ļø Krummholz
Near treeline, balsam fir and spruce become twisted into low forms known as krummholz.
The word comes from German and roughly means ācrooked wood.ā
These trees may grow only a few feet tall despite being surprisingly old.
Wind determines much of their form.
Branches survive better on the protected side of trunks, while exposed growth is repeatedly killed or damaged.
Hikers should avoid pushing through krummholz unnecessarily because these slow-growing plants can take decades to recover from damage.
š¼ Alpine Tundra
Above roughly 4,400ā5,000 feet, depending on exposure, true alpine vegetation becomes increasingly dominant.
Trees disappear.
The environment is characterized by:
- Thin soil
- Strong wind
- Long winters
- Short growing seasons
- Heavy icing
- Intense ultraviolet exposure
Plants survive by remaining close to the ground.
Many form dense cushions or mats that conserve heat and resist wind.
š¤ Diapensia
Diapensia (Diapensia lapponica) is one of the characteristic plants of the Presidential alpine zone.
It forms dense evergreen cushions only a few inches high.
White flowers emerge during the short growing season.
A healthy cushion may be decades old.
Walking across one can destroy years of growth in seconds.
This is why hikers in alpine areas are strongly encouraged to remain on rocks and established trails.
šø Alpine Azalea
Alpine azalea produces tiny pink flowers close to the ground.
Like diapensia, it is adapted to cold, wind, and extremely short summers.
Its presence gives portions of the alpine zone an almost Arctic appearance during early summer bloom.
š Lapland Rosebay
Lapland rosebay is another classic Arctic-alpine species.
Its purple flowers appear on exposed slopes where very few larger plants could survive.
Together with diapensia and alpine azalea, it forms part of the famous early-summer flower display in the Alpine Garden.

Other plants found in the Presidential alpine environment include:
- Mountain cranberry
- Labrador tea
- Bigelowās sedge
- Mountain avens
- Bearberry willow
- Black crowberry
- Dwarf cinquefoil
- Alpine bluet
Some of these species are rare or highly restricted in the contiguous United States.
The harsh Presidential environment acts as an ecological island resembling areas hundreds of miles farther north.

The Alpine Garden Research Natural Area occupies approximately 100 acres on Mount Washington between about 4,760 and 5,500 feet.
It contains one of the best examples of alpine tundra in the eastern United States.
Spring and early summer can produce spectacular blooms.
Visitors should resist the temptation to step closer for photographs.
The safest practice is:
Walk on durable rock or established trail surfaces rather than vegetation.
The plants may look tough because they survive ferocious weather, but many are extremely vulnerable to trampling.
š¦ Bicknellās Thrush
The Bicknellās thrush is one of the Presidential Rangeās most important wildlife species.
This rare migratory songbird breeds primarily in dense, high-elevation spruce-fir forests.
Its preferred habitat often lies near treeline, where:
- Balsam fir is dense
- Trees are stunted
- Wind damage creates thick vegetation
- Moss, snags, and fallen wood provide structure
The White Mountains contain important breeding habitat for the species.
Visitors are more likely to hear its distinctive song than actually see the bird.

American pipits can occur in high open terrain around the Presidentials.
Unlike forest birds, pipits forage close to the ground among rocks and low vegetation.

American black bears inhabit lower forested sections of the White Mountains.
They are much more likely to be encountered near valleys, campgrounds, or wooded trails than on the exposed alpine ridge.
Food should always be stored properly.
Never intentionally approach or feed a bear.
Human food conditioning can create serious problems for both visitors and wildlife.

Moose occur throughout suitable portions of northern New Hampshire.
Wetlands, forest openings, and lower-elevation habitats provide better moose habitat than the exposed Presidential summits.
Drivers should be particularly cautious around dawn and dusk.
A collision with a moose can be extremely dangerous because of the animalās size and long legs.

The Presidential Range offers some of the finestāand hardestāhiking in the eastern United States.
The difficulty is created by a combination of:

- Long stretches above treeline
- Sudden weather changes

- Limited shelter
- Slow travel over boulders
A trail that is only six miles long can require far more time than a six-mile trail in gentler terrain.
Mileage should never be the only measure used when planning a Presidential hike.

The Presidential Traverse is the signature route.
Traditional north-to-south versions cross:
