📏 What Does “Largest Mountain Range” Mean?
The word “largest” can describe several different characteristics.
Length measures how far a range extends from one end to the other. This is the criterion used in this article.
Width measures the distance across a range. A shorter but exceptionally broad mountain system may cover more land than a longer, narrower chain.
Area refers to the total surface occupied by mountains, plateaus, valleys, and associated uplands.
Elevation measures height above sea level. By this standard, the Himalayas are the greatest mountain range because they contain Mount Everest and most of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.
Relief measures the vertical difference between mountain summits and the surrounding terrain. A mountain does not need an exceptionally high elevation to possess dramatic relief.

The order should not be interpreted as an exact scientific league table. Measurements vary depending on which foothills, connecting ridges, plateaus, and subranges are included.
1. The Andes
The Andes form the longest continental mountain range in the world. They extend for approximately 7,000 kilometers along the western edge of South America, passing through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
The range consists of numerous parallel cordilleras, volcanic chains, high plateaus, and deeply carved valleys. Its greatest summit is Aconcagua in Argentina, which rises to approximately 6,961 meters and is the highest mountain outside Asia.
The Andes formed primarily through the subduction of oceanic plates beneath the South American Plate. This tectonic process remains active, producing earthquakes, volcanoes, crustal uplift, and continued mountain building.
Climates vary dramatically along the range. The northern Andes contain tropical cloud forests and páramo, the Central Andes include the high Altiplano and exceptionally dry Atacama region, and the southern Andes descend into the glaciers, forests, and fjords of Patagonia.

2. The Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains form one of the defining geographical features of western North America. Depending on the boundaries used, the range extends approximately 4,800 to slightly more than 5,000 kilometers from western Canada to the southwestern United States.
More than 100 individually named ranges are associated with the Rocky Mountain belt. These include the Canadian Rockies, Northern Rockies, Middle Rockies, and Southern Rockies.

4. The Transantarctic Mountains
