K3 (Gasherbrum IV)

🏔️ Overview
Gasherbrum IV, originally surveyed as K3, is one of the world’s highest and most technically formidable mountains. It rises to 7,925 meters (26,001 feet) in the Gasherbrum massif of the Karakoram, near the head of the Baltoro Glacier.
Gasherbrum IV is commonly ranked as the 17th-highest independent mountain on Earth. Although it falls only 75 meters short of the 8,000-meter threshold, it has attracted far fewer successful expeditions than many of the world’s fourteen eight-thousanders.
The mountain’s relatively low number of ascents is not caused by a lack of importance. Gasherbrum IV is renowned for:
- Its immense West Face
- Difficult and unstable ridges
- Complex glaciers and icefalls
- Severe Karakoram weather
- Sustained technical climbing at extreme altitude
- Very few routes reaching the true summit
The mountain was first climbed on August 6, 1958, by Italian climbers Walter Bonatti and Carlo Mauri. They reached the northern summit first and then completed a difficult traverse to the slightly higher main summit. Their route followed the northeast ridge and represented one of the greatest technical achievements of high-altitude mountaineering at the time.
Gasherbrum IV’s most famous feature is its towering western wall, which rises dramatically above the Baltoro Glacier and the great glacial junction near Concordia. The face is often called the Shining Wall, especially in mountaineering literature.
However, the name “Gasherbrum” does not literally mean “Shining Wall.” It comes from Balti words generally interpreted as meaning beautiful mountain. The popular Shining Wall interpretation probably developed because Gasherbrum IV’s West Face catches the late-day light and dominates the view from the Baltoro Glacier.
Despite its enormous height, Gasherbrum IV is not one of the fourteen eight-thousanders. Its summit stands below the conventional 8,000-meter threshold, but climbers on its upper slopes still face severe oxygen deprivation, exhaustion, frostbite, storms, and life-threatening altitude illness.
Gasherbrum IV is also notable for its limited topographic independence from neighboring Gasherbrum III. Although the mountain rises nearly eight kilometers above sea level, it has approximately 718 meters of prominence because a high connecting saddle links it to the taller peaks of the Gasherbrum massif.
Is Gasherbrum IV the same as K3?
Yes. K3 was the survey designation originally assigned to the mountain later named Gasherbrum IV.
In the 1850s, British surveyor Thomas George Montgomerie observed and numbered several major Karakoram peaks. The letter K stood for Karakoram, while the number reflected the order in which the peaks were recorded from his survey viewpoint.
The best-known historic designations include:
- K1: Masherbrum
- K2: K2
- K3: Gasherbrum IV
- K4: Gasherbrum II
- K5: Gasherbrum I
Most of these survey numbers were eventually replaced by geographic names. K2 is the major exception: its survey designation remained its standard international name.

Why is it called Gasherbrum IV?
Gasherbrum IV is one of several high summits forming the Gasherbrum massif.
The numbered Gasherbrum peaks include:

- Gasherbrum V
- Gasherbrum VI
- Gasherbrum VII
The numbering does not indicate height. Gasherbrum IV is lower than Gasherbrum I, II, and III, but higher than the remaining numbered Gasherbrum peaks.
It should not be confused with Gasherbrum II, historically surveyed as K4, or Gasherbrum I, historically surveyed as K5.
The Shining Wall
Gasherbrum IV’s West Face is one of the most celebrated mountain walls in the world.
It rises above the Baltoro Glacier as a vast formation of steep rock, snowfields, ice, and vertical ribs. The wall is particularly prominent from the approach toward Concordia and the upper Baltoro.
Polish climber Wojciech Kurtyka and Austrian climber Robert Schauer completed the first ascent of the West Face in 1985. Their route reached the north summit ridge but did not continue to the mountain’s highest point.
The achievement is still regarded as one of the defining climbs of modern alpinism. It also illustrates an important distinction in Gasherbrum IV’s ascent history:
Reaching the top of the West Face or the north summit is not necessarily the same as reaching the true main summit.
Gasherbrum IV has a complex summit ridge, and several famous expeditions have stopped short of its highest point.

Is Gasherbrum IV in Pakistan or China?
Gasherbrum IV stands in the border region between Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan and Xinjiang in China.
Topographic databases and maps do not always classify the summit identically. Some place it on the Pakistan–China border, while others describe it simply as a mountain of Pakistan because its famous western and southern approaches rise from the Baltoro Glacier in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The most familiar views and nearly all documented climbing approaches begin from the Pakistani side.

Where is the Baltoro Muztagh?
The Baltoro Muztagh is a major subrange of the Karakoram.

Relationship to the Baltoro Glacier
The Baltoro Glacier provides the principal geographic approach to Gasherbrum IV from Pakistan.
It flows westward through a mountain corridor surrounded by some of the Karakoram’s best-known summits and rock towers. Expeditions and trekkers usually enter the region through the Shigar and Braldu valleys before walking onto the glacier.
Gasherbrum IV becomes one of the most recognizable landmarks as travelers approach Concordia, where several major glaciers meet.
Its West Face rises dramatically above the upper Baltoro and South Gasherbrum glacier systems. The mountain’s steep profile makes it appear especially dominant, even when viewed alongside higher summits.
Concordia
Concordia is a broad glacial junction near the meeting point of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers.
It is famous for views of:

Gasherbrum IV is one of the most prominent mountains visible from this area. Its broad western wall stands almost directly above the glacier and catches changing light throughout the day.
Concordia is not Gasherbrum IV Base Camp. Expeditions must continue farther through the glacier system to reach suitable camps beneath the mountain.
Gasherbrum Glacier and South Gasherbrum Glacier
The Gasherbrum massif is surrounded by several interconnected glaciers.
The South Gasherbrum Glacier separates and drains portions of the terrain beneath Gasherbrum IV, Gasherbrum III, and neighboring summits. Climbers attempting the northeast ridge and eastern side must negotiate complex icefalls and glacier basins above it.
The glacial plateau between Gasherbrum III and Gasherbrum IV is particularly important in the mountain’s climbing history. The 1958 Italian expedition used this terrain to reach the northeast ridge.
The approach is threatened by:
- Crevasses
- Seracs
- Falling ice
- Avalanches
- Rockfall
- Changing glacier conditions
The original route has rarely been attempted successfully and has not been repeated to the main summit.
Relationship to Gasherbrum III
Gasherbrum III lies immediately east of Gasherbrum IV and rises slightly higher, with a commonly listed elevation of approximately 7,952 meters.
The two mountains are separated by a high glacier saddle and steep, dangerous terrain.
Gasherbrum III is:
- Gasherbrum IV’s nearest higher neighbor
- Its topographic parent
- Only about 2.38 kilometers from the nearest point of higher terrain
This close relationship explains why Gasherbrum IV’s prominence is much lower than its impressive absolute elevation might suggest.
Gasherbrum IV is nevertheless visually and mountaineeringly distinct. Its West Face, ridges, and isolated summit structure give it a strong independent identity.
Relationship to K2 and Broad Peak
K2 and Broad Peak lie northwest of Gasherbrum IV within the greater Baltoro Muztagh.
K2 reaches 8,611 meters and is the highest mountain in the Karakoram. Broad Peak reaches slightly above 8,000 meters and forms a long summit ridge north of the upper Baltoro.
Gasherbrum IV is lower than both, but its climbing routes are often considered more technically sustained and less forgiving than the standard routes on either mountain.
The three peaks are visible from parts of the Baltoro approach, creating one of the most dramatic mountain panoramas in the world.
Access from Pakistan
The conventional journey into the upper Baltoro region begins in Skardu, the principal expedition center of Gilgit-Baltistan.
From Skardu, expeditions generally travel by road toward:

- Askole
- The Braldu Valley
The walking approach then continues through locations such as:
- Jhola
- Paiju
- Urdukas
- Goro
- Concordia
From Concordia, Gasherbrum expeditions continue toward the upper Baltoro and Gasherbrum glacier systems.
Reaching the area requires permits, a licensed expedition or trekking operator, liaison arrangements where required, and substantial logistical preparation. Gasherbrum IV itself is an elite expedition objective rather than a conventional guided ascent.

No.
An eight-thousander must reach at least 8,000 meters above sea level. Gasherbrum IV falls approximately 75 meters below that threshold.
The mountain is nevertheless comparable to the eight-thousanders in several important ways:
- Extremely low oxygen levels
- Severe cold
- Long expedition approach
- Avalanche and serac danger
- High-altitude illness
- Difficult rescue
- Prolonged exposure above 7,000 meters
Its technical difficulty is widely considered greater than that of the standard routes on many eight-thousanders.

Topographic prominence
Gasherbrum IV has approximately 718 meters (2,356 feet) of topographic prominence.
Its summit elevation is approximately 7,925 meters, while its key col is approximately 7,207 meters.
The prominence calculation is therefore:
7,925 m − 7,207 m = 718 m
This means a climber traveling from Gasherbrum IV toward higher terrain would need to descend approximately 718 vertical meters before beginning to climb toward Gasherbrum III and the higher Gasherbrum summits.
Why is the prominence relatively modest?
Gasherbrum IV stands within a closely connected massif containing several mountains of nearly equal or greater height.
Gasherbrum III rises only a short distance to the east and is connected through an extremely high saddle. Because the connecting col remains above 7,200 meters, Gasherbrum IV does not have the enormous prominence of an isolated mountain such as Nanga Parbat or Rakaposhi.
This does not make the mountain visually insignificant.
Topographic prominence measures elevation above a connecting saddle—not:

Gasherbrum IV’s West Face rises thousands of meters above the surrounding glacier and gives the mountain a far more dramatic appearance than its prominence figure alone might suggest.
Isolation
Gasherbrum IV has approximately 2.38 kilometers (1.48 miles) of topographic isolation.
Isolation measures the distance to the nearest location reaching the same elevation or higher.
The nearest higher terrain lies toward Gasherbrum III, immediately east of Gasherbrum IV.
This is a short isolation distance for such a high mountain, reflecting the exceptional concentration of nearly 8,000-meter summits within the Gasherbrum massif.
Parent peak
Gasherbrum IV’s topographic parent is Gasherbrum III.
Gasherbrum III rises slightly higher and is connected to Gasherbrum IV through the high saddle used in the prominence calculation.
Although the two mountains are closely linked topographically, they have separate summit structures, climbing histories, faces, and routes.
Nearest higher neighbor
The nearest higher neighbor is Gasherbrum III, located immediately to the east.
Gasherbrum III is generally listed at approximately 7,952 meters, making it only about 27 meters higher than Gasherbrum IV.
The difference is small enough that early surveys sometimes produced uncertainty over relative elevations. Modern mountain lists generally recognize Gasherbrum III as the higher summit.
🏔️ Field Guide Tip
Do not confuse a trek to Concordia with an approach to Gasherbrum IV itself. Trekkers can obtain outstanding views of the Shining Wall from the Baltoro Glacier, but climbing beneath or onto the mountain requires a separate expedition permit, specialist logistics, glacier travel, and elite technical ability. The West Face may appear close from the glacier, yet the terrain above is among the most difficult and dangerous in the Karakoram.

🪨 Geology
Gasherbrum IV rises within the Baltoro Muztagh, one of the most intensely glaciated and tectonically active parts of the Karakoram.
The Karakoram developed through the continuing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Compression, uplift, faulting, folding, metamorphism, and erosion have combined to create the region’s exceptionally steep and elevated terrain.
Gasherbrum IV is not volcanic. Its height comes from the uplift and deformation of continental crust, followed by extensive erosion that carved the massif into its present form.
A steep mountain carved by ice
Gasherbrum IV has a narrow, complex summit structure surrounded by enormous faces and sharp ridges. Glaciers have eroded the mountain from several directions, creating:
- The immense West Face
- A remote and heavily glaciated North Face
- Steep eastern ice and rock terrain
- The northeast and northwest ridges
- A long, pinnacled summit crest
- Deep cirques and glacier basins
The mountain’s dramatic appearance results partly from the contrast between resistant rock walls and the glaciers that have cut deeply around them.
The West Face rises approximately 2,500 meters above the glacier and is one of the largest and steepest walls in the Karakoram. Wojciech Kurtyka and Robert Schauer’s 1985 account describes it as an exceptionally difficult combination of rock, ice, snow, and mixed terrain.
Summit rock and exposed faces
Mountain-specific geological descriptions of the exact summit bedrock are limited.
Gasherbrum IV is frequently described as containing limestone, marble, and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, but the accessible climbing and geographic sources do not provide a detailed summit-by-summit geological survey.
It is therefore safest to describe the mountain as part of the complex metamorphic and sedimentary terrain of the Karakoram rather than claiming that the entire summit consists of one particular rock type.
What climbers consistently report is the practical character of the exposed rock:
- Steep
- Fractured
- Loose in places
- Difficult to protect
- Frequently covered by verglas
- Vulnerable to rockfall as temperatures rise
During the 1958 first ascent, Walter Bonatti and Carlo Mauri encountered difficult climbing on rotten rock along the summit ridge. Five rock towers guarded the true summit, and the traverse between them formed one of the ascent’s greatest obstacles.
Frost weathering and rockfall
At nearly 8,000 meters, exposed rock is repeatedly subjected to extreme temperature changes.
Water enters cracks during warmer periods, freezes, expands, and gradually loosens fragments. Gravity, melting ice, and wind then release this material as rockfall.
The danger becomes especially severe when sunlight reaches the great faces. Several expeditions have started climbing before dawn in an effort to move through exposed sections while the snow, ice, and rock remain frozen.
The 1997 Korean expedition reported intense rock and ice fall after the sun reached the West Face, describing the need to begin climbing early each morning.
A mountain that continues to change
Gasherbrum IV is not a fixed climbing structure.
Its glaciers move, icefalls collapse, seracs break, cornices grow, and rock faces lose material. A route that appeared feasible during one expedition may become more dangerous—or impossible—years later.
The original northeast-ridge route has not become a standard route, partly because reaching it requires passage through dangerous glacial terrain beneath unstable ice and rock.
🧊 Glaciers and Icefalls
Glaciers surround Gasherbrum IV on nearly every side.
The mountain rises above a network connected to the Baltoro Glacier, the South Gasherbrum Glacier, the West Gasherbrum Glacier, and remote northern glaciers flowing toward China.
Baltoro Glacier
The Baltoro Glacier provides the main approach to Gasherbrum IV from Pakistan.
It flows westward through the heart of the Karakoram and receives ice from several major tributary glaciers. The South Gasherbrum Glacier descends from the Gasherbrum group and joins the Baltoro system.
Expeditions and trekkers approach along a long route from Askole through the Braldu Valley and onto the glacier.
Although Gasherbrum IV becomes visible from near Concordia, the mountain’s base remains separated from the main trekking route by glaciers, moraines, crevasses, and steep mountain terrain.
West Gasherbrum Glacier
The West Gasherbrum Glacier lies beneath the mountain’s famous western wall.
It has served as the principal base-camp area for expeditions attempting:
- The West Face
- The northwest ridge
- Southwest-facing routes
- Portions of the south side
The glacier appears comparatively level in photographs, but its surface contains crevasses, snow-covered openings, unstable moraine, and zones exposed to falling ice and rock.
The 1986 northwest-ridge expedition established base camp on the West Gasherbrum Glacier before moving into the large glacial basin beneath the ridge.
South Gasherbrum Glacier
The South Gasherbrum Glacier occupies the basin south and southeast of the principal Gasherbrum peaks.
It is surrounded by Gasherbrum I, II, III, IV, and related summits. NASA describes it as a bowl-shaped mass of ice flowing into the Baltoro Glacier.
The glacier and its upper cirques are important to the original northeast-ridge approach. However, the route involves dangerous icefalls and exposure beneath hanging glaciers.
The Gasherbrum III–IV basin
Gasherbrum III and Gasherbrum IV are separated by a high glaciated basin and saddle.
This terrain is essential to understanding the first-ascent route. The 1958 Italian expedition climbed through the glacier system and established high camps before reaching the northeast ridge.
The basin contains:
- Crevasses
- Steep snow slopes
- Ice walls
- Avalanche paths
- Serac-threatened terrain
- High saddles exposed to wind
The difficulties of reaching the ridge help explain why the first-ascent route has not developed into a frequently repeated normal route.
North Gasherbrum Glacier
The northern side of the massif drains toward the North Gasherbrum Glacier in China.
This glacier is remote and rarely visited. Scientific research identifies Gasherbrum IV as one of the peaks feeding snow and avalanche accumulation into its upper basin.
The North Face remains one of the least documented sides of the mountain and has not developed a recognized climbing route.
Serac danger
A serac is a large tower or block of glacier ice formed where ice flows across steep or broken terrain.
Seracs may collapse without warning. Their fall can trigger:
- Ice avalanches
- Snow avalanches
- Air blasts
- Falling debris
- Destruction of camps and fixed ropes
In 2024, a collapsing serac struck a Russian team on Gasherbrum IV during an effort connected with recovering Dmitry Golovchenko, who had disappeared during a 2023 attempt. Sergey Nilov was reported missing, while two other climbers were injured.
The accident reinforced the danger of the mountain’s lower icefalls, even before climbers reach its principal technical faces.
🌨️ Climate and High-Altitude Conditions
Gasherbrum IV has an extreme Karakoram climate.
Even during summer, climbers can experience:
- Heavy snowfall
- Prolonged storms
- Hurricane-force winds
- Temperatures far below freezing
- Deep, unstable snow
- Whiteouts
- Rapidly forming clouds
- Intense solar radiation
- Abrupt warming and rockfall
Severe and unpredictable weather
The Karakoram receives much of its high-altitude snowfall from western weather systems. Summer weather windows can occur, but they may be short and difficult to predict.
The 1986 expedition experienced unusually persistent snow. During its first month at base camp, snow fell on all but six days. Temperatures of approximately −32°C were recorded at a lower high camp, and deep snow made progress extremely slow.
Weather is one reason Gasherbrum IV has resisted so many strong teams. A route may require several consecutive days of stable conditions, yet climbers often receive only brief windows between storms.
Oxygen deprivation
Gasherbrum IV is below the conventional 8,000-meter death-zone threshold, but its summit is only about 75 meters lower.
At 7,925 meters, the atmosphere contains far less usable oxygen than at sea level. Climbers may suffer from:
- Extreme fatigue
- Slow movement
- Poor coordination
- Impaired judgment
- Loss of appetite
- Dehydration
- High-altitude pulmonary edema
- High-altitude cerebral edema
Technical climbing becomes much harder because even simple movements require considerable effort.
Most historic ascents have been made without supplementary oxygen, but this does not make the altitude safe.
Wind and cornices
Strong winds move snow across Gasherbrum IV’s ridges and form large cornices.
A cornice can extend beyond the supporting rock, creating an invisible hollow beneath what appears to be solid snow. Stepping too close to the edge may cause the formation to collapse.
Cornices were a significant hazard for expeditions using the northwest ridge and summit crest.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
The upper slopes of Gasherbrum IV support virtually no visible plant or animal life.
Above the glacier basins, the environment consists almost entirely of:
- Rock
- Snow
- Ice
- Windblown debris
- Microscopic organisms
There are no forests, shrubs, alpine meadows, or permanent populations of large animals near the summit.
Life along the lower approach
Biological diversity increases far below the mountain, especially in the Braldu Valley and around lower camps such as Paiju.
Possible vegetation in the lower approach region includes:
- Hardy grasses
- Low shrubs
- Alpine herbs
- Juniper in suitable lower areas
- Plants growing near streams and springs
Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the route rises onto the Baltoro Glacier.
By Concordia and the Gasherbrum base-camp region, most of the surface is glacier ice, moraine, exposed rock, or snow.
Wildlife in the wider Karakoram
The broader Central Karakoram landscape supports species such as ibex, snow leopards, wolves, foxes, and high-altitude birds.
However, these animals are most likely to occur in lower rocky valleys where food is available. They should not be described as regular inhabitants of the summit or upper glacier.
Direct wildlife records from Gasherbrum IV itself are extremely limited because expeditions focus on climbing and spend most of their time in biologically barren terrain.
Protecting the glacier environment
Human waste, discarded equipment, fuel containers, food packaging, and damaged tents can persist for years in the cold, dry climate.
Expeditions should:
- Remove non-biodegradable waste
- Use established waste systems
- Avoid contaminating streams and snow
- Minimize abandoned fixed ropes
- Follow local permit and environmental rules
- Keep camps away from unstable or sensitive areas

There is no hiking route to the summit of Gasherbrum IV.
The only activity accessible to ordinary experienced trekkers is the journey along the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia, where the mountain can be viewed from a safe distance.

1958 first ascent: Northeast Ridge
The first ascent was completed by an Italian expedition led by Riccardo Cassin.
Walter Bonatti and Carlo Mauri left their highest camp on August 6, 1958. They followed the northeast ridge, crossed the northern summit area, and traversed a complex ridge containing five rock towers.
The climbers identified the third tower as the highest point and reached it at approximately 12:30 p.m.
The final ridge involved exposed fourth- and fifth-class climbing on unstable rock at nearly 8,000 meters. Bonatti and Mauri returned through worsening weather and descended the dangerous route the following day.

They descended by the north or northwest ridge and completed the climb after an extraordinary period of exposure.
Kurtyka himself emphasized that they had climbed the wall but had not completed the mountain by reaching its highest summit.

Greg Child, Tim Macartney-Snape, and Tom Hargis reached the summit on June 22 by the northwest ridge.
The route had been attempted by American teams in 1983 and 1984. Earlier climbers had reached high points on the ridge but were defeated by unstable snow, difficult rock bands, exhaustion, and weather.
The 1986 team used fixed camps and ropes on the lower sections before making its final summit push. The climb involved deep snow, steep couloirs, difficult rock barriers, exposed bivouacs, and a complicated summit ridge.
Child later recorded that Macartney-Snape, who had climbed Everest without oxygen, considered Gasherbrum IV harder.
1997 Korean West Face route
A Korean expedition climbed a new line up the central rib of the West Face in 1997.
The route required approximately 2,500 meters of climbing and was graded VI 5.10 A3. The team used fixed ropes and siege-style tactics over nearly two months.
The climbers reached the upper summit area, but their claim to the true highest point was questioned after the expedition because of limited photographic evidence and uncertainty about exactly where they stopped.
The expedition report itself acknowledges criticism that the climbers did not reach the very top. It is therefore safest to credit the team with completing an important new West Face route without presenting the true summit as unquestionably verified.
Northwest Ridge repetitions and north-summit ascents

The pair reached a high point on the ridge but abandoned the summit attempt. During the descent, Golovchenko fell and disappeared. Rescue efforts were unsuccessful.
2024 recovery attempt
In August 2024, Nilov returned with other Russian climbers in an effort connected with recovering Golovchenko.
A serac collapsed on the team. Nilov was reported missing and presumed dead, while Mikhail and Sergei Mironov were injured and required rescue assistance.
The two consecutive tragedies demonstrate that the mountain’s danger is not limited to its upper technical walls. Its glacier approaches and lower icefalls can be equally lethal.

Gasherbrum III
Gasherbrum III is Gasherbrum IV’s closest higher neighbor.
It rises immediately east of Gasherbrum IV and is connected to it by an exceptionally high glacial saddle. This connection explains Gasherbrum IV’s relatively modest prominence of 718 meters despite its tremendous elevation.
Gasherbrum III is generally listed at approximately 7,952 meters—only about 27 meters higher than Gasherbrum IV.
