Twin Peaks is a rugged double-summit mountain on the northeastern boundary of Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada. Rising to approximately 12,321 feet (3,756 meters), it stands north of Tuolumne Meadows in a remote section of Yosemite’s high country near the Hoover Wilderness.

Despite the name, the mountain’s two summits are not equal in height. The western summit is the true high point, while the eastern summit reaches about 12,284 feet (3,744 meters). Twin Peaks is also notable for its substantial topographic prominence—more than 2,100 feet according to current Peakbagger data—which makes it one of the more geographically distinct summits in this part of the Sierra.

Modern topographic databases differ from some older references. Peakbagger currently gives Twin Peaks an elevation of 12,321.1 feet and prominence of 2,137.6 feet. Older sources commonly round the elevation to 12,323 feet, and some references publish a much smaller prominence figure. For consistency, this guide uses Peakbagger for prominence, isolation, and the nearest higher neighbor.

📍 Location

Twin Peaks occupies a remote position along the northeastern edge of Yosemite National Park, roughly north of Tuolumne Meadows and near the divide between Tuolumne and Mono counties.

The mountain is associated with both the Yosemite Wilderness on the western side of the Sierra crest and the Hoover Wilderness to the east. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System describes Twin Peaks as being on Yosemite National Park’s northeastern boundary and approximately 1.5 miles southeast of Matterhorn Peak.

Virginia Canyon extends south and southwest of the mountain, while Horse Creek Canyon cuts into the terrain north of the summit. Twin Peaks Pass lies between Twin Peaks and Virginia Peak and provides an important cross-country passage through this rugged part of the northern Yosemite high country.

The peak can be surprisingly difficult to distinguish from the eastern Sierra. Neighboring ridges and summits partially obscure its profile when viewed from the U.S. 395 corridor.

Twin Peaks is also slightly higher than nearby Matterhorn Peak, despite Matterhorn being substantially better known among Sierra climbers.

🪨 Geology

Twin Peaks lies in one of Yosemite’s most geologically interesting high-country regions.

Although Yosemite is famous for the enormous granitic bodies of the Sierra Nevada Batholith, the park also contains older bands of metamorphic rock. These rocks are especially important near Yosemite’s eastern boundary, where remnants of ancient sedimentary and volcanic formations survived the intrusion of younger granitic magma.

The National Park Service describes this zone as part of the Eastern Metamorphic Belt. These older rocks commonly survive as roof pendants—remnants of pre-existing rock surrounded or underlain by younger intrusive rocks.

Of particular interest is the Twin Peaks Sequence, a geological unit recognized in the nearby Saddlebag Lake roof pendant. National Park Service and California Geological Survey materials identify these rocks as late Paleozoic in age, including material dating from the Pennsylvanian and Permian periods.

Consequently, Twin Peaks and its neighboring mountains do not have the uniformly pale granite appearance associated with much of central Yosemite. Darker and reddish metamorphic rocks are conspicuous throughout this part of the Sierra crest, including nearby Virginia Peak and Dunderberg Peak.

Glaciation has also dramatically modified the landscape. During the Pleistocene, glaciers repeatedly occupied Yosemite’s high country, excavating valleys and basins and steepening ridges. Modern freeze-thaw weathering continues to break exposed rock into the extensive talus and scree encountered around Twin Peaks.

🌿 Flora & Fauna

The approaches to Twin Peaks cross both subalpine and alpine environments.

At lower elevations, forests may include lodgepole pine, mountain hemlock, and whitebark pine. Trees become increasingly scattered as travelers climb toward timberline, eventually giving way to alpine vegetation, talus, and largely barren rock.

Because of the short growing season and harsh weather, alpine plants tend to be low-growing and concentrated in sheltered pockets where soil and moisture are available.

American pikas are characteristic inhabitants of Yosemite’s high-elevation talus. Rather than hibernating, pikas collect vegetation during the warmer months and store it among rocks for winter. Yellow-bellied marmots, ground squirrels, Clark’s nutcrackers, and other high-country wildlife also occur in Yosemite’s subalpine environments.

Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep have also been restored to portions of Yosemite’s high country, although visitors should never assume they will encounter them around a particular summit.

The upper slopes of Twin Peaks are predominantly exposed alpine terrain, so climbers should take particular care to avoid trampling the small areas of fragile vegetation that survive between rocks.

🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes

There is no maintained hiking trail to the summit of Twin Peaks. All summit routes eventually involve off-trail travel, route-finding, loose rock, and scrambling.

South Ridge from Twin Peaks Pass

One of the established climbing options approaches the mountain from Twin Peaks Pass, the saddle between Twin Peaks and Virginia Peak.

From the pass, the south ridge provides a predominantly Class 2 ascent, although climbers may encounter Class 3 scrambling around prominent pinnacles higher on the ridge.

Twin Peaks Pass itself can be approached from the Virginia Canyon side or from terrain leading toward Spiller Creek.

Southeast Gully

A gully on the southeast side between the mountain’s two summits provides another route.

SummitPost describes this as approximately Class 2 under favorable dry conditions. The gully rises toward the broad upper summit area before the final approach to the western high point.

Loose talus and rockfall potential should be expected.

Green Creek and Virginia Pass Approach

For climbers starting east of the Sierra crest, the Green Creek Trailhead provides access toward Virginia Pass and the Twin Peaks area.

This approach passes through the Hoover Wilderness before reaching more remote cross-country terrain. It can be combined with an ascent of Virginia Peak, although doing both summits creates a substantial high-altitude outing.

Horse Creek Approach

Twin Peaks can also be approached from the north through Horse Creek Canyon, the same general area used to approach Matterhorn Peak.

Routes from this side provide access toward Horse Creek Pass and the mountain’s northern and western terrain. The north side of Twin Peaks is considerably steeper, with cliffs and couloirs descending toward Horse Creek Canyon.

Tuolumne Meadows Approach

Approaching from inside Yosemite via the Virginia Canyon and Spiller Creek region is possible, but the distances are considerable. This option is better suited to a multi-day wilderness trip than a conventional day hike.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip: Twin Peaks’ technical ratings do not tell the whole story. Even a route described as Class 2 involves remote, largely trailless terrain at elevations approaching 12,000 feet. Navigation, altitude, loose rock, snowfields, thunderstorms, and the long retreat to a trailhead can make the mountain significantly more serious than the climbing grade suggests.

For overnight travel, permits are required year-round in both Yosemite Wilderness and the Hoover Wilderness. The correct permit depends on the trailhead and land-management agency where the trip begins. Day-use permit rules are different, so always check current regulations before departure.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

For most hikers and climbers, mid- to late summer through early fall provides the most practical climbing window.

July through September generally offers the greatest likelihood of snow-free scrambling, although conditions vary substantially with the previous winter’s snowpack. North-facing gullies and shaded basins can retain snow considerably longer than exposed slopes.

Summer also brings the risk of thunderstorms. Yosemite notes that lightning-producing thunderstorms are most common from June through September, making early starts particularly important on exposed alpine ridges.

September can offer cooler temperatures, fewer insects, and less lingering snow, but days become shorter and early-season snowstorms become increasingly possible.

Winter and spring transform Twin Peaks into a serious snow-mountaineering or ski-mountaineering objective. Avalanche conditions, deep snow, difficult road access, and extreme weather require specialized experience.

Matterhorn Peak

Matterhorn Peak lies northwest of Twin Peaks and is one of the best-known summits in northern Yosemite. Although slightly lower than Twin Peaks, its striking shape and climbing history have made it considerably more famous.

Virginia Peak lies south of Twin Peaks along the ridge extending from Twin Peaks Pass. The two mountains are sometimes combined during long peakbagging trips.

Dunderberg Peak

Dunderberg Peak lies east-southeast of Twin Peaks and is its nearest higher neighbor according to Peakbagger. It also belongs to the geologically varied metamorphic high country along Yosemite’s northeastern edge.

Excelsior Mountain

Excelsior Mountain rises farther southeast along the northeastern boundary of Yosemite. Like several peaks in this region, it is noted for darker metamorphic rock rather than Yosemite’s more familiar pale granite.
