Dunderberg Peak is a prominent high summit in California’s eastern Sierra Nevada, rising above the Virginia Lakes area of Mono County. Located within the Hoover Wilderness, the mountain reaches approximately 12,370 feet (3,771 meters) according to modern LiDAR-based measurements used by Peakbagger. Older maps and references commonly list the summit at about 12,374–12,379 feet.

The peak stands east of the main Sierra Nevada crest, between the Mono Basin and the upper watershed of the East Walker River. Dunderberg Peak rises in Mono County in eastern California, a short distance west of U.S. Highway 395 and northwest of Mono Lake. The mountain is approximately eight miles west of Conway Summit and is readily visible from parts of the eastern Sierra corridor.

🪨 Geology

U.S. Geological Survey mapping identifies a group of rocks specifically described as the metasedimentary rocks of Dunderberg Peak. These Paleozoic rocks include:

These rocks began as older sedimentary materials and were later altered by heat and pressure during the complicated geological development of the Sierra Nevada.

Research conducted on nearby Kavanaugh Plateau, immediately north of Dunderberg, has documented wind-shaped whitebark pine krummholz as well as low-growing common juniper. These plants survive short growing seasons, prolonged snow cover, strong winds, and large temperature fluctuations.

The highest slopes of Dunderberg are dominated by rock, scree, and sparse alpine vegetation rather than continuous forest.
