Mount Isto lies in northeastern Alaska, deep within the eastern Brooks Range and well north of the Arctic Circle.

This can appear strange because Keele Peak is extremely far away.
Mountain parentage does not necessarily mean that two peaks are neighboring mountains or part of the same range. It is determined through the network of ridges, key cols and higher summits used in calculating topographic prominence.
📐 How Mount Isto Became the Highest Mountain in the Brooks Range
One of the most fascinating things about Mount Isto is that its status as the Brooks Range high point was uncertain for decades.
Older U.S. Geological Survey maps did not agree.
Some maps placed Mount Isto above 9,000 feet, while others gave it a lower elevation. Meanwhile, Mount Chamberlin was commonly listed at about 9,020 feet and was often considered the highest mountain in the Brooks Range.
The disagreement persisted because surveying extremely remote, glacier-covered Arctic mountains was difficult.
That changed when researchers Matt Nolan and Kit DesLauriers used a high-resolution airborne photogrammetric technique known as fodar to measure the tallest mountains of the U.S. Arctic.
Their work produced the following ranking:

The results finally settled the long-running question.
Not only was Mount Isto higher than Mount Chamberlin—Mount Hubley was higher than Chamberlin as well.
The researchers reported measurement accuracy of better than about 20 centimeters, demonstrating how dramatically modern mapping technology can improve our understanding of even long-mapped mountain regions.
🪨 Geology
Mount Isto rises within one of the most geologically interesting portions of the Brooks Range.
The broader Romanzof Mountains contain a complicated mixture of:

Remote travelers commonly fly from Fairbanks or one of the regional communities and then arrange bush-plane transportation into wilderness areas.
