


The Cordillera Occidental, or Western Cordillera, is one of the two principal mountain chains forming the Ecuadorian Andes. Running roughly north to south along the western side of Ecuador’s highlands, it contains enormous volcanoes, crater lakes, páramo grasslands, cloud forests, deeply eroded valleys, and some of the country’s most recognizable mountain scenery.
Its highest summit is Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador and the highest summit anywhere in the Northern Andes. Other important mountains of the Cordillera Occidental include Iliniza Sur, Carihuairazo, Cotacachi, Pichincha, CorazĂłn, and Chiles.
The range belongs to the much larger Andes and forms an important part of the Northern Andes. Unlike a simple continuous ridge, however, Ecuador’s Western Cordillera is a complicated mountain belt containing ancient crustal blocks overlain by much younger volcanic landscapes.
🏔️ Overview
The Cordillera Occidental forms the western wall of Ecuador’s Inter-Andean highlands. To the east lies the elevated Inter-Andean Valley, while the western slopes descend through steep foothills and humid forests toward Ecuador’s Pacific coastal region.
Peakbagger’s geographic model gives the range an approximate north-to-south extent of 527 kilometers (327 miles), although mountain-range boundaries are inherently approximate and different geographic classifications may draw them differently. The northern end merges into the complex Andes of southern Colombia.
The range is particularly notable for its volcanoes. Chimborazo reaches well above 6,000 meters, while several additional volcanic mountains exceed 4,500 or 5,000 meters. Between the major summits lie high páramo plateaus, cultivated valleys, crater lakes, eroded volcanic ridges, and steep river drainages.
The Cordillera Occidental should not be confused with the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia, although the two belong to the same broader Northern Andean system.

The Cordillera Occidental occupies the western side of Ecuador’s Andean highlands.
Ecuador’s Andes are commonly divided into two principal chains:

Iliniza Norte, reaching roughly 5,100 meters, is another famous summit but is generally treated as a subsidiary summit of the larger Iliniza volcanic complex rather than a separate major mountain in lists of independent peaks.
Chimborazo
Chimborazo dominates the southern volcanic portion of the Cordillera Occidental.
Ecuador’s Instituto GeofĂsico places its summit at 6,263 meters and describes Chimborazo as the highest volcano in the Northern Andes. Peakbagger uses a slightly higher figure of 6,267 meters.
The volcano is composed of several successive volcanic edifices. The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program records Holocene activity, with its most recent known eruption dated to approximately the sixth century CE.
Chimborazo is also famous because its summit is the point on Earth’s surface farthest from Earth’s center. Earth bulges around the Equator, placing Chimborazo’s summit farther from the center of the planet than the much higher summit of Mount Everest.
Iliniza
The Iliniza volcanic complex consists of two dramatic summits: Iliniza Sur and Iliniza Norte.
The two peaks are remnants of a complex volcanic history rather than a simple symmetrical cone. Smithsonian describes the complex as largely Pleistocene in age, with younger lava-dome activity occurring during the Holocene on its southern flank.
Iliniza Norte is frequently climbed as an acclimatization mountain, while Iliniza Sur is substantially more technical and may involve glacier travel, snow, and ice.
Carihuairazo
Carihuairazo stands immediately northeast of Chimborazo. Although much lower than its enormous neighbor, it still rises to roughly 5,020 meters.
The mountain is the deeply eroded remnant of an older volcanic structure and provides a striking contrast with Chimborazo’s broad, ice-covered massif.
Cotacachi
Cotacachi dominates the highlands of northern Ecuador near Cuicocha.
The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program gives the Cotacachi volcanic edifice an elevation of approximately 4,939 meters, while Peakbagger uses approximately 4,900 meters for the summit. The steep, eroded Pleistocene volcano rises immediately north of the much younger Cuicocha caldera.
Pichincha
The Pichincha volcanic complex rises directly west of Quito.
Guagua Pichincha reaches approximately 4,784 meters and lies only about 12 kilometers west of Ecuador’s capital. Ecuador’s Instituto GeofĂsico specifically identifies it as part of the Cordillera Occidental.
The volcanic complex includes the older Rucu Pichincha and younger Guagua Pichincha volcanic centers. Guagua Pichincha has experienced historical eruptions and remains closely monitored because of its proximity to the Quito metropolitan area.

🪨 Geology
The geology of Ecuador’s Cordillera Occidental is particularly interesting because the foundation of the range did not develop entirely from old continental crust.
Modern geological research describes much of the Western Cordillera and Ecuadorian forearc as being constructed from accreted oceanic terranes—pieces of oceanic crust, volcanic plateaus, and volcanic-arc material that became attached to the western margin of South America during earlier phases of plate convergence.
These older rocks form part of the basement beneath the modern mountain belt. Later tectonic compression, uplift, erosion, and volcanic activity created the high Cordillera visible today.
The modern volcanic landscape is connected to the ongoing subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath northwestern South America.
As the oceanic plate descends into the mantle, water and other volatile materials released from it contribute to melting within the overlying mantle. Magma then rises through the crust, feeding the Northern Andean volcanic arc.
The subduction of the submarine Carnegie Ridge beneath Ecuador has also influenced the country’s tectonic and magmatic evolution. Researchers continue to investigate the precise timing and magnitude of that influence, but geological studies indicate an important relationship between ridge subduction, deformation, exhumation, and volcanism in Ecuador’s Western Cordillera.

The Cordillera Occidental contains much more than traditional cone-shaped volcanoes.
Its volcanic landscapes include stratovolcanoes, lava domes, collapsed volcanic edifices, large calderas, crater lakes, pyroclastic deposits, and ancient volcanic complexes.
Quilotoa
Quilotoa is one of the range’s most spectacular volcanic features.
The volcano reaches approximately 3,914 meters and contains a large water-filled caldera. Ecuador’s Instituto GeofĂsico identifies Quilotoa as part of the volcanic front of the Cordillera Occidental and classifies it as potentially active.
Its last major eruption occurred during the twelfth century and produced extensive pyroclastic flows and ash deposits. The eruption formed a crater almost three kilometers across.

Cuicocha
Cuicocha is another major caldera in the northern Cordillera Occidental.

Páramo vegetation includes tussock grasses, cushion plants, shrubs, mosses, lichens, wetlands, and scattered high-altitude woodland. These ecosystems are adapted to intense ultraviolet radiation, strong winds, cold nights, high humidity, and rapid changes in temperature.

Mountain travel in the Cordillera Occidental is possible throughout much of the year, but conditions vary considerably according to elevation and location.
The central Ecuadorian Andes often experience relatively drier and clearer periods from roughly June through September, with another period of comparatively settled weather sometimes occurring around December and January.
There is no completely reliable dry season in the high mountains.
Cloud, rain, snow, hail, intense sunlight, and strong wind can occur during any month, and conditions frequently change over the course of a single day.
For glacier climbs, route conditions are often more important than the calendar. Climbers should obtain recent information about snow, crevasses, ice conditions, volcanic activity, road access, and refuge operations before setting out.
