Antisana is one of Ecuador’s great high volcanoes—a massive, glacier-covered stratovolcano rising from the eastern side of the Ecuadorian Andes. 🪨 Geology

Antisana is a composite stratovolcano belonging to the Northern Andean Volcanic Arc.

Its existence is ultimately connected to the tectonic processes occurring along the western margin of South America. Oceanic crust associated with the Nazca Plate is being forced beneath the South American Plate, generating magma that feeds numerous volcanoes throughout Ecuador and the wider Andes.

The Smithsonian describes Antisana as a massive, glacier-covered stratovolcano constructed along the western margin of the Eastern Cordillera.

The upper mountain is heavily glaciated, and climbers must negotiate crevasses, steep snow, ice, changing glacier conditions, and complicated route finding.

There is no permanent high-altitude refuge comparable to some of the facilities used on Ecuador’s more frequently climbed volcanoes. Expeditions may therefore involve camping and a greater degree of logistical preparation.
