Nevado de Santa Isabel is one of the most distinctive high mountains of Colombia’s Cordillera Central. Rather than rising as a single steep volcanic cone, the mountain consists of an elongated complex of volcanic domes crowned by several high summits.
Located within Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados, Santa Isabel rises between the much larger Nevado del Ruiz and Nevado del Tolima. It is especially notable today for another reason: its once-substantial tropical glacier has almost completely disappeared.

Nevado de Santa Isabel lies in the Cordillera Central of Colombia, one of the three principal branches of the Colombian Andes.

Nevado de Santa Isabel rises in central Colombia within Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados.
The broader volcanic complex lies near the boundaries of Caldas, Risaralda and Tolima, although different summit and glacier measurements may assign particular points to different departments.

🪨 Geology
Nevado de Santa Isabel belongs to the volcanically active Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes.

The volcano is associated with the subduction-related tectonic environment responsible for much of the volcanism along the western margin of South America.

Instead of a large central cone dominated by one obvious crater, Santa Isabel consists of an elongated north-south arrangement of volcanic domes and convex surfaces created by lava extrusion.

Geological evidence shows that lava flowed into valleys on the southwestern and southeastern sides of the volcano during the Holocene. A separate small Holocene lava dome also formed roughly 10 kilometers southwest of the main summit area.

This is an area where older sources can be misleading.
Some websites have repeated 1943 as Santa Isabel’s last eruption. However, the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program does not recognize a historical eruption in 1943.
Its current database lists Santa Isabel’s last known eruption at approximately 850 BCE and identifies several confirmed prehistoric eruptive periods.
The Smithsonian specifically states that no historical eruptions are known.
That does not mean the volcano is considered geologically extinct.

The retreat of Santa Isabel’s glacier is one of the most dramatic environmental changes occurring anywhere in the Colombian Andes.

The Loss of Conejeras Glacier
One of Santa Isabel’s most famous glacier sectors was Conejeras.
Scientists monitored Conejeras intensively for many years, using stakes, weather stations and direct measurements to understand how tropical glaciers respond to climatic conditions.
Between late 2023 and early 2024, Conejeras disappeared completely.
Its disappearance was particularly significant because the glacier had been monitored for approximately 17 years and became an important reference site for Colombian glaciology.
IDEAM identifies several factors contributing to Santa Isabel’s rapid loss of ice:
