🏔️ Overview

Nevado del Ruiz is one of the most famous—and closely monitored—volcanoes in South America. Rising above Colombia’s central Andes, the glacier-covered stratovolcano stands on the boundary between the departments of Caldas and Tolima within Los Nevados National Natural Park.

The mountain belongs to Colombia’s Cordillera Central, one of the three great branches of the Andes that cross the country. Although Nevado del Ruiz is not Colombia’s highest mountain, its combination of high elevation, active volcanism, tropical glaciers, and proximity to populated valleys makes it one of the country’s most significant peaks.

Nevado del Ruiz is especially well known because of the catastrophic eruption of November 13, 1985. A relatively moderate eruption melted part of the summit ice and generated enormous lahars that swept down surrounding river valleys. The town of Armero was devastated, and more than 23,000 people died in what became one of the deadliest volcanic disasters of the twentieth century.

The volcano remains active today. According to the Colombian Geological Survey’s bulletin issued August 11, 2026, Nevado del Ruiz remains at Yellow Alert, meaning it is an active volcano showing changes from its baseline behavior.

IDEAM places the volcano around 4°53′ north latitude and 75°19′ west longitude. Its glacier lies within the municipalities of Villamaría in Caldas and Casabianca and Murillo in Tolima. The mountain is part of Los Nevados National Natural Park, one of Colombia’s most important high-Andean protected landscapes.

Geographically, the mountain belongs to the Cordillera Central, the central and highest of Colombia’s three principal Andean branches. This volcanic cordillera also contains Nevado del Huila, Nevado del Tolima, Nevado de Santa Isabel, and several other major volcanic centers.

Farther east lies Colombia’s Cordillera Oriental, while the Cordillera Occidental rises on the western side of the Cauca Valley.

📏 Elevation & Prominence

IDEAM currently gives Nevado del Ruiz a summit elevation of 5,321 meters (17,457 feet). This official Colombian figure is the elevation used throughout this guide.

Peakbagger uses a slightly lower elevation of approximately 5,311 meters (17,425 feet) and calculates about 2,046 meters (6,713 feet) of topographic prominence. Its isolation is approximately 231.3 kilometers (143.7 miles).

That prominence comfortably exceeds the 1,500-meter threshold used to classify an ultra-prominent mountain, or “Ultra.”

The nearest significantly higher mountain is Nevado del Huila, farther south in Colombia’s Cordillera Central. Nevado del Huila is also the highest volcano in Colombia.

Because Nevado del Ruiz retains glacier ice near its summit, published elevation figures should not necessarily be treated as permanently fixed. Changing ice surfaces and differences between topographic datasets can produce slightly different measurements.

🪨 Geology

Nevado del Ruiz is an active stratovolcano associated with the Northern Volcanic Zone of the Andean volcanic arc.

Like many volcanoes of the Andes, its existence is ultimately connected with the eastward subduction of the oceanic Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate. Magma generated in this tectonic environment has produced a long chain of volcanoes through Colombia and neighboring Ecuador.

Nevado del Ruiz is a broad volcanic complex covering more than 200 square kilometers. The modern volcano consists of lava flows, volcanic domes, ash, and other pyroclastic material accumulated during repeated episodes of activity.

Its summit is dominated by Arenas Crater. IDEAM describes the crater as irregular and elongated, measuring roughly 980 meters along its longest axis and about 900 meters along the shorter axis, with a depth of approximately 300 meters.

The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program records eruptions extending back thousands of years, with historically documented activity since the sixteenth century. Its modern eruptive behavior has included explosions, ash emissions, pyroclastic activity, gas emissions, seismic unrest, and lahars.

🧊 Glaciers

One of the features that makes Nevado del Ruiz particularly hazardous is the presence of glacier ice on an active volcano.

IDEAM estimated its glacier area at 7.17 ± 0.30 square kilometers in 2024, making Nevado del Ruiz the second-largest remaining glacier mass in Colombia at that time. The measured area declined by approximately 6.6% between 2022 and 2024.

Both climatic warming and volcanic activity have influenced the glacier.

Glacier loss does not eliminate the volcano’s lahar hazard. Even relatively modest eruptions can interact with snow, ice, water, loose volcanic sediment, and steep river valleys to produce dangerous debris flows.

🌋 The 1985 Eruption and Armero Tragedy

Nevado del Ruiz is inseparable from the events of November 13, 1985.

The eruption itself was not among history’s largest volcanic explosions. Its devastating consequences came primarily from what happened when hot eruptive material interacted with the volcano’s summit ice.

Melting ice and snow contributed to lahars—fast-moving mixtures of water, mud, rocks, volcanic sediment, and debris—that entered several river systems draining the volcano.

One of the largest lahars followed the Río Lagunilla toward Armero, approximately 74 kilometers from the summit. Much of the town was overwhelmed.

More than 23,000 people died, making the event one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in modern history and the deadliest known lahar disaster.

The disaster profoundly changed volcanic monitoring and disaster preparedness in Colombia. Nevado del Ruiz is now monitored continuously using seismic instruments and other techniques designed to detect changes within the volcanic system.

🌋 Current Volcanic Activity

Nevado del Ruiz should not be treated as a dormant mountain.

The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program describes an eruptive period beginning in November 2014, characterized at various times by ash emissions, gas-and-steam plumes, seismicity, thermal anomalies, and lava-dome activity within Arenas Crater.

The situation is continually updated by the Servicio Geológico Colombiano (SGC).

In its bulletin covering August 4–10, 2026, the SGC reported increased seismic activity associated with fracturing rock inside the volcano as well as increased numbers of seismic events related to volcanic fluids. Gas and water-vapor emissions continued through Arenas Crater, although measured sulfur-dioxide output remained relatively low.

Gas and steam rose as much as approximately 500 meters above the summit during the week. The SGC also reported that no new ash emissions had been confirmed since March 8, 2026, although winds continued to remobilize older ash deposits.

As of August 11, 2026, the volcano remained at Yellow Alert. The SGC specifically warns that activity can change rapidly and that renewed ash emissions or escalation to Orange or Red status remains possible.

Because volcanic conditions change, this status should always be checked again before visiting.

🌿 Flora & Fauna

Nevado del Ruiz forms part of a much larger high-Andean ecosystem protected within Los Nevados National Natural Park.

As elevation increases, landscapes transition through high Andean forest, páramo, superpáramo, wetlands, rocky volcanic terrain, and glacial environments.

Páramo vegetation is particularly important. These cold, wet tropical highlands occur above the upper forest belt and support plants specially adapted to intense sunlight, freezing nighttime temperatures, wind, and waterlogged soils.

The wider park protects watersheds feeding rivers on both sides of the Cordillera Central. Meltwater and precipitation from the Nevado del Ruiz region ultimately contribute to several important drainage systems.

The ecological significance of the area makes regulated tourism particularly important. High-altitude vegetation can recover very slowly from trampling and other disturbance.

🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes

Nevado del Ruiz has a mountaineering history, but it should not currently be treated like an ordinary summit hike.

Volcanic activity can result in closures, evacuation orders, restricted sectors, and limits on access to glacier areas. Colombia’s national parks authority regulates high-mountain tourism within Los Nevados National Natural Park, and access requirements can change according to volcanic conditions.

The broader park can still provide opportunities to experience páramo, volcanic scenery, viewpoints, and other high-Andean landscapes without attempting the summit itself.

There is no single climbing season that overrides the volcanic risk at Nevado del Ruiz.

For visitors to Los Nevados National Natural Park, the best time is a period when official access is open, volcanic conditions are considered acceptable, roads are passable, and authorized guides or operators confirm local conditions.

Weather at these elevations can change rapidly at any time of year. Cold temperatures, cloud, rain, wind, high ultraviolet exposure, and reduced oxygen should all be expected in the upper parts of the park.

Above 5,000 meters, altitude itself becomes one of the mountain’s most important hazards.
