📍 Location
The Venezuelan Coastal Range occupies a long belt across northern Venezuela, roughly paralleling the Caribbean coastline.
Rather than forming one continuous ridge, the system consists of multiple mountain chains, basins, depressions and valleys. These geographical breaks have had an enormous influence on the development of northern Venezuela.
The mountains extend through or border several of the country’s most populated areas. Major cities associated with the region include Caracas, Valencia, Maracay, La Guaira and Puerto Cabello.

Geological research describes the southern Caribbean margin as a broad zone containing deformed crust, major faults, metamorphic rocks, thrust belts and terranes assembled during a long history of plate interaction.
Much of the Coastal Range contains metamorphic rocks, including schists and other rocks that were altered under elevated temperatures and pressures.
Within Henri Pittier National Park, for example, INPARQUES describes rugged terrain underlain largely by metamorphic rocks of Mesozoic age, including rocks associated with the Cretaceous.
Sections of the Cordillera de la Costa also contain evidence of high-pressure metamorphism connected with the complicated tectonic evolution of the Caribbean–South American plate boundary.

⛰️ Steep Slopes and Natural Hazards
The abrupt relief of the Venezuelan Coastal Range can create significant natural hazards.
One of the most devastating examples occurred in December 1999, when exceptionally heavy rainfall triggered thousands of landslides and destructive debris flows along the Caribbean-facing slopes north of Caracas.
The disaster was particularly severe in what is now La Guaira State.
A U.S. Geological Survey investigation documented extensive flooding, landslides and debris flows along roughly 40 kilometers of coastline between La Guaira and Naiguatá.
The event demonstrated how the combination of extremely steep terrain, deeply weathered rock, short mountain watersheds and intense tropical rainfall can produce catastrophic flooding and slope failures.
