Schinhorn is a remote, glacier-covered mountain in the Bernese Alps of southern Switzerland. Rising to 3,796 meters (12,454 feet), it stands west of the much higher Aletschhorn in the canton of Valais.
The mountain occupies a rugged position between the upper Lötschental to the north and the Oberaletsch Valley to the south. Several glaciers surround its slopes, including the Beich Glacier, Oberaletsch Glacier, and smaller hanging glaciers above the Lötschental.
Although Schinhorn has considerable topographic prominence and an impressive pyramidal profile, it receives far fewer climbers than nearby 4,000-meter summits. 📍 Location
Schinhorn stands in the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland. Its summit lies on the municipal boundary between Blatten, in the Lötschental, and Naters, which extends into the Oberaletsch region.
The mountain forms part of the Aletschhorn Group in the western Bernese Alps. The summit is approximately 3.9 kilometers west-southwest of Aletschhorn and is connected to it through a high, complex ridge containing the Distlighorn, Sattelhorn, and Sattellicka.
To the southwest, another ridge runs toward the Beichgrat and the Breithorn above the Lötschental. A southern ridge descends across the Wysshörner toward the meeting point of the Beich and Oberaletsch glaciers.
Schinhorn’s position between two major valleys also creates two separate drainage systems. Water from its northern slopes flows into the Lonza through the Lötschental, while meltwater from the southern side enters the Massa through the Oberaletsch Glacier. Both rivers eventually reach the Rhône.

🪨 Geology
Schinhorn lies within the Aar Massif, a large body of ancient crystalline rock exposed through the central Swiss Alps. The wider Aletsch region contains granites, gneisses, and other metamorphic rocks that originated deep within the continental crust.
These rocks are considerably older than the modern Alps. They were uplifted and deformed during the Alpine orogeny, when the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates compressed and thickened the crust.
Glacial erosion later shaped Schinhorn into its present form. Ice moving through the Oberaletsch and Lötschental systems excavated deep valleys while leaving steep ridges, exposed rock faces, hanging glaciers, and sharp subsidiary summits.
The mountain remains strongly influenced by glacial processes. Freeze-thaw weathering breaks apart exposed rock, while moving ice transports debris into the surrounding valleys. Retreating glaciers may also reveal unstable rock and alter traditional climbing routes.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
The summit and upper slopes of Schinhorn are dominated by snow, glacier ice, bare rock, and alpine debris. Very little vegetation survives at the highest elevations.
Lower approaches contain a much greater variety of habitats. Alpine meadows around the Lötschental support hardy grasses, saxifrages, gentians, alpine avens, and other plants adapted to short growing seasons and prolonged snow cover.
At still lower elevations, larch, spruce, and Swiss stone pine occur in sheltered areas. The broader Jungfrau-Aletsch region contains an exceptional range of environments, from valley forests and dry mountain slopes to glaciers and high alpine rock.
Wildlife in the surrounding region may include:

🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes
Schinhorn is not a conventional hiking mountain. Every established ascent involves glacier travel, exposed alpine terrain, and steep snow or ice. Climbers must be able to navigate crevassed glaciers, perform crevasse rescue, use crampons and an ice axe, and assess avalanche and rockfall hazards.
South-Flank Normal Route
The easiest established route approaches from the south, generally using the Oberaletsch Hut as a base.
Climbers travel across or beside the Oberaletsch Glacier before approaching the mountain through the Beich Glacier area. The upper route climbs the broad southern flank toward the summit.
The final slopes can reach approximately 42 to 45 degrees. Early in the season they may hold firm snow or firn, while later summer conditions can expose hard glacier ice. Crevasses on the approach and bergschrund conditions below the summit slope can substantially change the difficulty.
The route is generally rated around WS or PD, but the seriousness of the glacier approach should not be underestimated.
Western and Northwestern Ridges
A more technical approach can be made from the direction of the Beichpass and Beichgrat. This side may be reached from the Lötschental, sometimes using the Anen Hut as an initial base.
The west-northwest ridge offers a more exposed climbing experience than the normal route. Depending on conditions, the route may involve mixed rock, snow, ice, and sections of unstable terrain.
Approach from the Lötschenlücke
Routes have also been attempted from the Lötschenlücke and Hollandia Hut area. These approaches cross complex glaciated terrain and may incorporate parts of the northeastern ridge system near Distlighorn.
They are less straightforward than the south-flank route and are generally undertaken only by climbers with extensive high-alpine experience.
Ski Mountaineering
Schinhorn is occasionally climbed as a demanding ski-mountaineering objective. The glacier approach and steep upper face require stable snow, excellent route-finding, and confident skiing in serious terrain.
A ski ascent may stop below the steepest summit section when conditions make the final climb unsafe.

The main mountaineering season generally runs from July through September, although the best period depends on snow coverage, glacier conditions, and temperatures.

Later in the season, glacier ice and bergschrunds may become more exposed. Rockfall can also increase as snow melts and formerly frozen ground begins to thaw.
Spring can offer opportunities for ski mountaineering, but only during periods of stable snow and low avalanche danger. Weather changes rapidly at this elevation, and storms can bring whiteout conditions, high winds, and fresh snow even during midsummer.
Visitors who do not intend to climb Schinhorn can explore the Lötschental during the warmer months. Valley trails provide views toward the surrounding high peaks without requiring glacier travel.
