Immediately north of Mount Everest rises Changtse, one of the world’s highest 7,000-meter mountains and one of the most geographically fascinating peaks in the Everest massif. Its Tibetan name means “North Peak,” an appropriate description for a mountain connected directly to Everest through the famous North Col.

Changtse reaches approximately 7,543 meters (24,747 feet) according to a widely used modern mapping figure, although published elevations vary. Peakbagger currently uses 7,553 meters, while other mountaineering records have reported figures ranging from roughly 7,519 to 7,580 meters or more.

The mountain stands entirely within the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, between the Main Rongbuk and East Rongbuk glaciers. Although Changtse has less than 500 meters of topographic prominence and is therefore technically subordinate to Everest, its immense elevation makes it higher than almost every independent mountain outside High Asia.

Its climbing history is unusually complicated. 📍 Where Is Changtse?

Changtse stands immediately north of Mount Everest in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Unlike Everest itself, which straddles the border between Nepal and China, Changtse lies entirely on the Tibetan side.

The mountain occupies a remarkably important position within the Everest landscape. The Main Rongbuk Glacier lies to its west, while the East Rongbuk Glacier lies to its east and southeast. A smaller glacier descending from Changtse feeds into the East Rongbuk system.

South of the mountain is one of the most famous high-altitude passes on Earth: the North Col.

The North Col connects Changtse directly with Mount Everest. Anyone climbing Everest by the traditional northern route from Tibet must therefore travel through terrain immediately beneath Changtse.

This relationship makes Changtse far more familiar visually to Everest climbers than its relatively obscure name might suggest.

🏔️ Changtse and Mount Everest

Changtse is essentially Everest’s great northern neighbor.

Mount Everest reaches 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet), more than 1,300 meters above Changtse. The two are joined by a high ridge descending from Everest’s North Ridge to the North Col before rising again toward Changtse.

In topographic terms, Everest is both Changtse’s parent peak and Nearest Higher Neighbor.

Their summits are only a few kilometers apart.

Peakbagger places higher terrain on Everest approximately 2.39 kilometers from Changtse’s summit, while the two summit points themselves are roughly four kilometers apart.

The closeness creates an unusual situation. Changtse is taller than almost every mountain in the world, yet it rises so close to Everest that its independent topographic prominence is comparatively modest.

There is no mystery in this case.

Everest stands immediately southeast of Changtse and towers more than a kilometer above it.

The two mountains are connected through the North Col, making Changtse one of the clearest examples of a very high summit whose topographic identity is strongly tied to an even larger neighboring mountain.

📐 The North Col

The North Col is the key saddle separating Changtse from Mount Everest.

Peakbagger gives the col an elevation of approximately 7,056 meters (23,150 feet), although other mountaineering sources commonly use figures around 7,000 to 7,020 meters.

That means the saddle itself is higher than many famous mountains.

The North Col was first reached by members of the 1921 British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition, which included George Mallory, Guy Bullock, and Edward Oliver Wheeler.

It later became the gateway to Everest’s classic northern route.

Modern climbers approaching Everest from Tibet generally travel up the East Rongbuk Glacier toward Advanced Base Camp before ascending steep snow and ice to the North Col.

From there, Everest climbers turn south toward the North Ridge.

📐 How Prominent Is Changtse?

Peakbagger calculates Changtse’s prominence at approximately 497 meters (1,631 feet).

That places the mountain below the common 500-meter threshold used by some lists when deciding which high summits should be regarded as independent mountains.

Its modest prominence explains an apparent paradox.

Changtse is often described as one of the world’s roughly 50 highest summits by elevation, yet it may disappear entirely from lists requiring substantial topographic independence.

Neither description is necessarily wrong.

The difference depends on whether the list is ranking every significant summit or only mountains exceeding a particular prominence threshold.

🪨 Geology of Changtse

Changtse was created by the immense continental collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates.

India began moving northward after separating from Gondwana and eventually collided with Eurasia around 40 to 50 million years ago.

Because both plates contained relatively buoyant continental crust, neither could simply descend beneath the other like dense oceanic crust.

Instead, the collision compressed and thickened Earth’s crust.

Rock layers were:

  • Uplifted thousands of meters

These processes created both the Himalayan mountain chain and the Tibetan Plateau.

The collision continues today. Modern geophysical measurements indicate ongoing convergence between India and Eurasia, contributing to continuing Himalayan uplift and frequent earthquakes.

🪨 Geology of the Everest Massif

The Everest massif contains several major geological units exposed at extraordinary elevations.

Broadly, these include high-grade metamorphic rocks, granitic intrusions, and sedimentary rocks that were originally deposited in ancient marine environments.

The summit of Everest itself contains sedimentary rocks associated with the ancient Tethys Ocean, illustrating the astonishing scale of Himalayan uplift.

Changtse belongs to the same intensely deformed central Himalayan tectonic region.

However, detailed descriptions of the exact summit lithology of Changtse are much less widely published than those of Everest.

It is therefore safest to discuss Changtse within the broader geology of the Everest massif rather than assume that every rock unit exposed on Everest occurs identically on Changtse.

🌦️ Climate

Changtse experiences one of the harshest climates on Earth.

Its position north of the main Himalayan crest gives it a relatively dry, high-altitude Tibetan climate, but its enormous elevation means snow and ice persist throughout the year.

The South Asian monsoon delivers tremendous moisture to the southern side of the Himalayas.

Much of that precipitation falls before moist air masses cross the highest ridges, creating a rain-shadow effect across Tibet.

The Rongbuk Valley is consequently much drier than Nepal’s Khumbu Valley on the opposite side of Everest.

At Changtse’s summit, however, low temperatures ensure that precipitation falls primarily as snow.

Climbers must contend with:

🔭 Early Exploration of Changtse

Changtse became known to mountaineers through the early exploration of Mount Everest.

Because it stands directly beside the northern Everest route, climbers repeatedly crossed its lower slopes and glaciers while searching for a route to the world’s highest summit.

The mountain was initially referred to by some English-language expeditions as Everest’s North Peak.

Its Tibetan name, Changtse, expresses essentially the same idea.

The history of Changtse therefore became intertwined with Everest decades before anyone seriously attempted to reach its summit.

🧗 Mallory and Irvine on Changtse

During the 1924 British Mount Everest expedition, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine traveled onto terrain associated with Changtse while examining the northern approaches to Everest.

The mountain itself was not their objective.

Instead, climbers were studying the East Rongbuk Glacier and possible camp locations required for an Everest attempt.

This early exploration illustrates Changtse’s unusual role in mountaineering history.

Long before it became a climbing objective in its own right, the mountain served as part of the access terrain to Everest.

🧗 The 1935 Attempt

One of the earliest serious attempts on Changtse came during the 1935 British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition.

Eric Shipton, Edmund Wigram, and Bill Tilman were among the climbers who explored the mountain.

On August 21, they climbed to within approximately 460 meters, or 1,500 vertical feet, of the summit.

Deep, soft snow ultimately stopped the attempt.

At extreme Himalayan elevations, deep unconsolidated snow can make progress painfully slow while simultaneously increasing avalanche danger.

The summit remained unclimbed.

🧗 Hillary and Lowe in 1952

Changtse was examined again in 1952 by Edmund Hillary and George Lowe, accompanied by Sherpa climbers.

This took place one year before Hillary and Tenzing Norgay completed the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest from Nepal.

The group explored Changtse Glacier and reached an estimated elevation of approximately 6,600 meters (21,500 feet).

They eventually turned back after supplies ran low.

Once again, Changtse remained without a summit ascent.

🏆 The Complicated First Ascent of Changtse

The first-ascent history of Changtse is more complicated than a simple date and name.

The mountain was formally assigned to a German expedition in 1982.

But before that expedition completed its climb, Dutch mountaineer Johan Taks apparently reached the summit while participating in a separate Dutch Mount Everest expedition.

Taks did not hold permission to climb Changtse.

According to accounts from the Dutch expedition, he reached the summit on October 3, 1982.

This is generally regarded as the first known ascent of the mountain—but an unauthorized one.

🇩🇪 The First Permitted Ascent

A German expedition led jointly by Eduard Geyer and Hansjürgen Tauscher was officially authorized to climb Changtse that autumn.

The climbers established Base Camp near the terminal moraine of the Rongbuk Glacier at approximately 5,100 meters.

They followed the historic approach up the East Rongbuk Glacier toward Changtse and Everest.

Camp II was established at approximately 6,100 meters near the base of Changtse’s long northeast ridge.

The route climbed an approximately 600-meter snow-and-ice slope with some rock before continuing onto the high ridge.

Camp IV was established at approximately 6,900 meters on October 13.

🏔️ Udo Zehetleitner Reaches the Summit

On October 14, 1982, German climber Udo Zehetleitner reached Changtse’s summit.

He therefore completed the mountain’s first officially permitted ascent.

Two days later, on October 16, four more expedition members reached the summit:

  • Ludwig Hösle
  • Martin Engler

Interestingly, the original American Alpine Journal report describes these climbers collectively in connection with the “first ascent,” even though its own chronology places Zehetleitner on the summit two days before the others.

The cleanest historical interpretation is therefore:

First known ascent: Johan Taks, October 3, 1982, without a permit.

First permitted ascent: Udo Zehetleitner, October 14, 1982.

Additional first-expedition summiters: Braun, Frick, Hösle, and Engler, October 16.

🧗 Gino Casassa’s 1983 Solo Ascent

Chilean climber Gino Casassa made another remarkable ascent the following year.

Casassa was participating in an Everest expedition when high-altitude illness initially sent him back to Base Camp.

After recovering, he returned upward despite having been instructed not to climb high again.

On May 14, 1983, he left Camp II alone at approximately 3:30 a.m.

He climbed the long northeast ridge toward Changtse.

Near the summit, deep powder snow on a slope of approximately 70 degrees created serious avalanche danger.

Casassa found an alternative line on the north face and reached the summit at approximately 5:00 p.m.

He returned to Camp II around 11:00 p.m.

The ascent had not been authorized.

His own American Alpine Journal account states that he was subsequently expelled from his national mountaineering federation because of the illegal climb.

🇨🇳🇯🇵 The 1986 Chinese-Japanese Expedition

A large joint Chinese-Japanese expedition climbed Changtse in May 1986.

The expedition consisted of 17 Japanese climbers, 19 Chinese climbers, additional support staff, and members of the Chinese press.

After traveling up the Changtse Glacier, the team gained the east ridge.

On May 10, sixteen climbers reached the summit—eight Japanese and eight Chinese.

Another eight Chinese climbers reached the summit on May 11.

Among the summit climbers was Tibetan woman Gunsang, making the expedition particularly significant in the climbing history of Changtse.

🧗 Ed Webster’s Southeast Face

American climber Ed Webster opened one of the mountain’s most notable new routes in 1986.

Webster first attempted the southeast face on August 26 but encountered dangerous thin snow covering shale at approximately 23,500 feet.

He retreated.

After a rest day, he returned on August 28.

Webster climbed alone through a prominent snow gully between rock buttresses before angling across the face and joining the northeast ridge.

Because the lower gully was avalanche-prone, he deliberately climbed much of it at night, when colder conditions helped stabilize the snow.

He reached the summit and returned to Advanced Base Camp in approximately 15 hours round trip.

The ascent was the first American ascent of Changtse and a new route on the southeast face.

🇦🇺 The 1987 Australian Ascent

Australian climbers Rob Turner and Glen Nash reached the summit on September 29, 1987.

Their route followed a north-face ice line previously explored by Japanese climbers.

The ascent was far from straightforward.

The climbers encountered high winds, two avalanche incidents, and a fall into a bergschrund during the expedition.

Other members of the Australian team attempted a safer line farther east but turned back between approximately 7,100 and 7,200 meters.

Turner and Nash continued and reached the summit.

🏃 Fast Ascents in 2016

Changtse later became part of an unusual series of rapid high-altitude climbs during a 2016 Everest expedition involving Kilian Jornet, Jordi Tosas, Vivian Bruchez, and Sébastien Montaz-Rosset.

Jordi Tosas climbed Changtse via the east ridge in a round trip of approximately nine hours from camp.

Later, Kilian Jornet climbed a variation on the northeast slope before gaining the east ridge at around 7,200 meters and continuing to the summit.

His round trip took approximately 11 hours and 45 minutes.

These ascents demonstrate how differently elite acclimatized climbers can approach terrain that required multi-camp expeditions during the early climbing history of the mountain.

They do not make Changtse an easy climb.

Operating above 7,500 meters remains an extreme undertaking regardless of speed.

🥾 How Difficult Is Changtse?

Changtse is a serious expedition mountaineering objective.

Although its standard northeast/east ridge is less technically difficult than the hardest routes on Everest, the mountain presents numerous hazards.

  • Cornices

🫁 Climbing at 7,500 Meters

Changtse rises into an elevation zone where the human body is under severe physiological stress.

Atmospheric pressure at 7,500 meters is less than half that at sea level.

The amount of oxygen available with each breath is dramatically reduced.

Climbers may experience:

  • Severe fatigue
  • Rapid breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Poor sleep
  • Appetite loss
  • Dehydration
  • Impaired judgment
  • Reduced coordination

More dangerous conditions include high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema.

These conditions can become fatal if a climber does not descend quickly.

The history of Changtse includes numerous examples of climbers turning around not because of technical difficulty but because snow conditions, illness, or weather made continued ascent unsafe.

🌿 Flora and Fauna

There is effectively no conventional plant community on Changtse’s summit or upper slopes.

The highest mountain consists almost entirely of permanent snow, glacier ice, exposed rock, and periglacial terrain.

Conditions are simply too severe for normal vascular plants.

Temperatures are extremely low, soils are poorly developed or nonexistent, liquid water is scarce for much of the year, and powerful winds scour exposed slopes.

Vegetation increases dramatically at lower elevations within the wider Qomolangma region.

The enormous elevation range of the protected landscape produces ecological zones ranging from mountain forests and shrublands to alpine grasslands, periglacial terrain, and permanent snow.

🐆 Wildlife Around Changtse

The wider Qomolangma National Nature Reserve supports surprisingly diverse wildlife despite the extreme environment surrounding Everest.

Research has documented large mammals including:

  • Snow leopard
  • Blue sheep
  • Gray wolf
  • Eurasian lynx
  • Brown bear
  • Kiang
  • Tibetan gazelle
  • Himalayan tahr
  • Red fox

These animals do not inhabit Changtse’s 7,500-meter summit.

Instead, they occupy lower valleys, rocky ridges, shrublands, alpine grasslands, and cliffs where vegetation and prey are available.

Snow leopard habitat studies in the reserve have found particularly suitable conditions at elevations around 4,000 meters, especially where rugged terrain provides cover and prey.

🐏 Blue Sheep and Snow Leopards

One of the most important animals in the high Himalayan food web is the blue sheep, or bharal.

Blue sheep are well adapted to steep, rocky terrain and high-altitude grasslands.

They are also among the principal prey species of snow leopards.

The protected landscape around Everest therefore supports an ecological system very different from what exists only a few vertical kilometers higher on Changtse.

Snow and ice accumulating on Changtse eventually feed some of Asia’s great river systems.

Although Changtse lies in China, water does not follow political boundaries.
