Pumari Chhish is a remote 7,492-meter (24,580-foot) mountain in the Hispar Muztagh of Pakistan’s Karakoram. Rising north of the immense Hispar Glacier, it belongs to a remarkable concentration of high peaks that includes Khunyang Chhish, Distaghil Sar, Trivor, and Yutmaru Sar.

Despite ranking among the world’s highest mountains, Pumari Chhish has an exceptionally sparse climbing history. Its 7,492-meter main summit was first climbed by a Japanese expedition in July 1979 via a long approach from the Khunyang Glacier and a route up the north ridge. Published mountaineering records indicate that the main summit has not been successfully climbed again.

The larger Pumari Chhish massif contains several distinct objectives. Pumari Chhish South, approximately 7,350 meters high, remained unclimbed until Yannick Graziani and Christian Trommsdorff made a highly technical alpine-style first ascent of its 2,700-meter south face in 2007. Pumari Chhish has approximately 884 meters of topographic prominence and about 3.47 kilometers of isolation. Its nearest higher neighbor is Khunyang Chhish, which rises immediately west-southwest of the massif.

📍 Location

Pumari Chhish stands in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, in the Hispar Muztagh of the central Karakoram.

The mountain lies north of the Hispar Glacier, one of the great glacier systems of the Karakoram. It rises only a few kilometers east of Khunyang Chhish, while Distaghil Sar stands farther northwest.

To the northeast, the high mountain chain continues toward Yutmaru Sar and Yukshin Gardan Sar.

Although these peaks appear tightly grouped on maps, the terrain between them is extraordinarily complex. Massive ridges descend into heavily crevassed glaciers, while subsidiary valleys and icefalls make movement from one side of the massif to another difficult.

The principal glacier systems around Pumari Chhish include the Pumarikish Glacier, Yutmaru Glacier, Khunyang Glacier, and upper Yazghil Glacier.

Each has played a role in either successful ascents or attempts on the mountain’s various summits.

🏔️ The Pumari Chhish Massif

Pumari Chhish is best understood as a group of related peaks rather than a single isolated summit.

The three most important are:

  • Pumari Chhish Main — 7,492 m
  • Pumari Chhish South — approximately 7,350 m
  • Pumari Chhish East — approximately 6,850 m

The main summit is the highest and most topographically important point of the massif.

Pumari Chhish South lies roughly one kilometer southeast of the main summit. Although lower, its huge south face became one of the most technically challenging unclimbed 7,000-meter objectives of the early twenty-first century.

Pumari Chhish East lies farther east and is considerably lower, but elevation alone does not reflect its difficulty. Its southern side consists of steep granite pillars, mixed terrain, large snow mushrooms, and unstable hanging snow and ice.

As a result, the lowest of the three principal summits became arguably the most technically difficult.

The short isolation illustrates just how densely packed the Hispar Muztagh is. A mountain almost 7,500 meters high has a higher neighbor only a few kilometers away.

🏔️ The Hispar Muztagh

The Hispar Muztagh contains one of the greatest concentrations of 7,000-meter mountains in the Karakoram.

Its major peaks include Distaghil Sar, Khunyang Chhish, Kanjut Sar, Trivor, Pumari Chhish, Momhil Sar, Yutmaru Sar, and several other major summits.

Unlike the Baltoro region around K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums, the Hispar Muztagh receives relatively few climbing expeditions.

There are several reasons.

The approaches are long and remote. Many peaks are protected by difficult glaciers and avalanche-prone valleys. The mountains themselves frequently present steep mixed faces rather than straightforward snow routes.

As a result, several Hispar Muztagh mountains have been climbed only a handful of times, while others still contain major unclimbed faces and subsidiary summits.

Pumari Chhish is one of the clearest examples of this extraordinary isolation.

🧭 The 1974 Attempt

The first widely recorded attempt on Pumari Chhish took place in 1974.

An Austrian expedition intended to approach the mountain from the north through the Yazghil Glacier system.

The glacier itself became the expedition’s principal obstacle.

The team was unable to find a satisfactory route through or around the difficult ice and therefore never developed a serious summit attempt.

This failure demonstrated one of Pumari Chhish’s unusual problems: even reaching the base of a viable climbing route could require complicated high-altitude glacier navigation.

Five years later, a Japanese team solved the problem by approaching from an entirely different direction.

🇯🇵 The 1979 Hokkaido Expedition

The successful 1979 expedition was organized by the Hokkaido Alpine Association of Japan and led by Dr. Takao Sasaki.

Rather than trying to force a direct approach through the lower Yazghil Glacier, the Japanese team established itself much farther west on the Khunyang Glacier.

This created a long and indirect route to the mountain.

Base Camp was established on June 19 at approximately 4,300 meters on the Khunyang Glacier.

The climbers then moved up the glacier to the foot of a high pass leading across the mountains toward the upper Yazghil Glacier.

The next obstacle was a roughly 700-meter icefall averaging close to 60 degrees.

The expedition required four days to prepare this section and install fixed ropes.

Camp II was established at approximately 6,000 meters near the high col.

From there, the expedition crossed onto the upper Yazghil Glacier.

🧊 Crossing to the Yazghil Glacier

Once the climbers had crossed the high col, they were finally positioned beneath Pumari Chhish’s north ridge.

Camp III was established on the upper Yazghil Glacier at approximately the same elevation as Camp II.

The next section climbed a broad snow slope averaging around 50 degrees.

Again, progress was slow.

It took another four days to prepare the route and establish Camp IV on a forepeak at approximately 6,900 meters.

By the time the summit push began, the expedition had fixed approximately 2,300 meters of rope.

The distance from Base Camp to the summit was roughly 19 kilometers, illustrating the extraordinary scale of the route.

This was very different from the lightweight alpine-style ascents that would later define climbing on Pumari Chhish South and East.

🥾 First Ascent of Pumari Chhish

The first summit party left high camp on July 15, 1979.

The contemporary American Alpine Journal report lists Hideo Yokoyama, Koichi Minami, Masaki Ohashi, and a climber identified as H. Chiba as reaching the summit.

The precise expansion of the Chiba initial varies in later secondary accounts, so the original expedition record is the safest historical formulation.

Two days later, on July 17, a second group reached the summit.

That team included expedition leader Takao Sasaki’s report listing Susumu Ogasawara, Yoshimasa Chiba, Michio Hayashi, Michihiro Kanno, and Mitsuo Shiroishi.

The expedition had therefore placed nine climbers on the summit over two separate days.

Despite this substantial first-ascent success, Pumari Chhish Main appears never to have been climbed again.

Modern American Alpine Journal accounts describing the massif continue to identify the 1979 climb as the main summit’s only successful ascent.

🧗 Why Has Pumari Chhish Been Climbed So Rarely?

Pumari Chhish’s lack of repeat ascents is unusual for such a high mountain.

The original north-ridge route is not simply a matter of following an obvious glacier toward the summit. The 1979 expedition first had to climb from the Khunyang Glacier over a difficult high pass, descend onto the upper Yazghil Glacier, and then establish another sequence of camps toward the north ridge.

The approach alone therefore involves major technical and logistical difficulties.

Alternative routes from the south are even more imposing.

The south side rises thousands of meters above the Yutmaru and Pumarikish glacier systems and is threatened by hanging glaciers, séracs, avalanches, and huge rock walls.

Climbers interested in modern alpine-style objectives have consequently tended to focus on Pumari Chhish South and East rather than repeating the long original route to the main summit.

🏔️ Pumari Chhish South

Pumari Chhish South rises to approximately 7,350 meters (24,114 feet) about one kilometer southeast of the main summit.

Its most striking feature is an enormous south face rising approximately 2,700 meters above the glacier.

The wall attracted several strong climbing teams during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

British-New Zealand climbers Roger Payne and Julie-Ann Clyma attempted the south side in 1999 and again in 2000.

Their route followed a diagonal snow-covered ramp toward the southwest ridge.

During the 2000 attempt, they reached approximately 6,200 meters before severe weather and extreme avalanche conditions forced them to descend.

At one point they spent roughly 36 hours in their tent while avalanches passed around and over their position.

The summit remained untouched.

🧗 Graziani and Trommsdorff

French alpinists Yannick Graziani and Christian Trommsdorff became fascinated with Pumari Chhish South during their exploration of the Hispar Muztagh.

They attempted the mountain before finally returning in 2007.

Rather than using fixed camps and large quantities of rope, Graziani and Trommsdorff committed to the huge south face in alpine style, carrying what they needed with them and climbing continuously through the mountain.

They began their successful attempt on June 8.

The route involved a remarkable combination of snow, ice, mixed climbing, and difficult rock.

Technical difficulties became especially sustained between approximately 6,400 and 7,000 meters.

The hardest sections reached roughly 5.10 rock climbing and M6 mixed climbing, with a short crack requiring aid.

The two climbers spent four nights bivouacked on the face.

🥾 First Ascent of Pumari Chhish South

Graziani and Trommsdorff reached the summit of Pumari Chhish South at noon on June 12, 2007.

Their route had climbed roughly 2,700 vertical meters.

They graded the ascent approximately:

ABO, 5.10, M6, A1

Reaching the summit was only half the challenge.

Rather than traversing toward the main peak or descending another ridge, they reversed the enormous south face.

The descent required extensive downclimbing and approximately 35 rappels.

They finally reached safety on June 13 after six days on the mountain.

The ascent was considered one of the most technically significant first ascents of a 7,000-meter summit of its era and became the lead climbing feature in the 2008 American Alpine Journal.

🏔️ Pumari Chhish East

Pumari Chhish East is much lower than the main and South summits, reaching approximately 6,850 meters (22,474 feet).

Yet its modestly lower elevation is deceptive.

Its south side consists of immense granite pillars separated by steep snowfields and couloirs. Huge snow formations often build along its summit ridges, while séracs threaten some of the seemingly easier lines.

For modern technical alpinists, Pumari Chhish East became one of the most attractive unclimbed objectives in the Hispar Muztagh.

Attempts began during the late 2000s.

American climbers made an early attempt in 2007. A Canadian team followed in 2009, and additional expeditions examined or attempted the peak during the following decade.

None reached the summit.

🧗 The 2021 Attempt

In 2021, British climber Tom Livingstone and French alpinist Mathieu Maynadier attempted Pumari Chhish East by its southeast ridge.

They approached through the Yutmaru Glacier and established Base Camp at approximately 4,500 meters.

Persistent snowfall made acclimatization and climbing difficult.

When conditions briefly improved, the pair reached the south side of the mountain and climbed the southeast ridge through mixed terrain and steep ice.

Large snow mushrooms and cornices slowed progress considerably.

They eventually camped at around 6,500 meters.

The following morning brought heavy snow, wind, and poor visibility.

Livingstone and Maynadier continued to approximately 6,700 meters before retreating.

Although they were relatively close in elevation to the summit, the complex ridge still required substantial traversing and climbing.

Pumari Chhish East remained unclimbed.

🚢 The Crystal Ship

The breakthrough came in June 2022.

French climbers Christophe Ogier, Victor Saucède, and Jérôme Sullivan traveled to the Yutmaru Glacier with the goal of climbing Pumari Chhish East’s south face.

Their strategy was unusual for the Karakoram.

They arrived early in the season, hoping that colder June temperatures would keep the wall more firmly frozen and reduce the danger of falling rock and collapsing snow.

The weather initially refused to cooperate.

Snow fell on 26 of the team’s first 27 days at Base Camp.

The climbers used one rare clear period to acclimatize on nearby Rasool Sar, but otherwise they spent weeks waiting beneath their objective.

Eventually, a seven-day weather window appeared.

They gave the wall an additional day to shed some of the accumulated snow and then began climbing.

🧗 First Ascent of Pumari Chhish East

Ogier, Saucède, and Sullivan left advanced base camp around midnight on June 25, 2022.

The first major obstacle was a roughly 700-meter snowfield beneath the main rock wall.

Because of avalanche danger, they attempted to move across this section mainly during the coldest hours.

Above it rose the true technical heart of the climb: a huge granite pillar split by steep cracks and mixed terrain.

The climbing became increasingly difficult as the team gained altitude.

Several pitches involved sustained rock and mixed climbing, including overhanging sections where cracks were choked with snow.

The trio eventually reached the upper shoulder and continued onto easier but highly exposed summit terrain.

On the morning of June 29, they reached the summit of Pumari Chhish East.

Their altimeters indicated approximately 6,820 meters, while most maps place the summit around 6,850 meters.

They named the route The Crystal Ship.

Its overall statistics were approximately:

1,600 m, 6b, A2, M7

The climbers then rappelled their route.

🏆 Piolet d’Or

The first ascent of Pumari Chhish East was recognized as one of the 2023 Piolets d’Or awarded ascents.

The award highlighted not merely technical difficulty but the overall style of the climb.

Ogier, Saucède, and Sullivan climbed a previously unclimbed mountain by a new route, operated in a small team, committed themselves to difficult terrain without extensive fixed infrastructure, and adapted their strategy to unusually unstable Karakoram conditions.

The award also brought international attention back to the wider Pumari Chhish massif more than four decades after the first ascent of its main summit.

Remarkably, the three principal summits tell three very different stories of Karakoram climbing: a large expedition on the main summit in 1979, a highly technical two-person alpine-style ascent of South in 2007, and a modern mixed-and-rock route on East in 2022.

🧗 Climbing Pumari Chhish

Pumari Chhish is an extremely serious expedition objective.

The original north-ridge route requires complicated glacier travel and crossing a high col before climbers can even reach the upper Yazghil Glacier.

The southern approaches provide more direct access to the massif but lead beneath some of its most dangerous terrain.

🧊 Pumarikish Glacier

The Pumarikish Glacier flows south from the massif toward the Hispar Glacier.

Scientific studies describe it as approximately 7 kilometers long.

The glacier is heavily nourished by avalanches descending from the enormous north-facing walls of Pumari Chhish and Khunyang Chhish.

Its upper basin lies beneath granite headwalls more than 2,500 meters high.

🧊 Hispar Glacier

It flows westward from Hispar Pass, where it connects with the Biafo Glacier.

Together, the Hispar and Biafo systems create an extraordinary glaciated corridor across the Karakoram.

Large tributary glaciers descend into the Hispar from the north, including the Khunyang, Yutmaru, and other glacier systems draining the Hispar Muztagh.

These valleys provide access to Pumari Chhish and its neighboring mountains.

🪨 Geology

Pumari Chhish lies in one of the most geologically active mountain regions in Asia.

The Karakoram owes much of its extraordinary elevation to the continuing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The Hispar region lies close to major granitic bodies and tectonic structures associated with the uplift of the Karakoram.

Scientific work in the Hispar basin has noted that the mountain belt here combines exceptionally high average elevation with extremely rapid rates of uplift and erosion.

Glaciers play a major role in that erosion.

They continually remove material from the mountains, carving enormous valleys and transporting rock debris downstream while tectonic forces continue to elevate the range.

The balance between uplift and erosion helps produce the enormous granite headwalls, deeply cut valleys, and sharp ridges characteristic of Pumari Chhish and neighboring Khunyang Chhish.

🌿 Flora and Fauna

Pumari Chhish’s upper slopes are almost completely barren.

At elevations approaching 7,500 meters, conditions are far beyond the normal limit of vascular plant growth. The summit environment consists of exposed rock, snow, ice, and glacier terrain.

Life becomes more diverse at lower elevations in the wider Karakoram.

Vegetation found in suitable parts of the Central Karakoram region includes Pashtun juniper, Himalayan white pine, West Himalayan spruce, sea wormwood, alpine grasses, wild strawberries, geraniums, thyme, clover, and specialized high-altitude flowering plants.

The exact composition varies dramatically with elevation, slope direction, moisture, and distance from the dry interior valleys.

The wider mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan support an equally impressive collection of wildlife.

Species recorded within the Central Karakoram landscape include snow leopards, Himalayan ibex, markhor, musk deer, urial, Himalayan lynx, wolves, red foxes, stone martens, alpine weasels, and marmots.

Birds include golden eagles, bearded vultures, Himalayan griffons, snowcocks, snow partridges, chukar, and kestrels.

These species generally live far below Pumari Chhish’s summit, but the massif forms part of the enormous high-mountain ecosystem surrounding the Hispar Glacier.

Distaghil Sar
