Churen Himal

Churen Himal is a 7,385-meter (24,229-foot) mountain in the Dhaulagiri Himal of western Nepal. Rising between the higher Dhaulagiri peaks to the east and Putha Hiunchuli to the west, Churen Himal forms part of one of the most remote concentrations of 7,000-meter mountains in the Nepal Himalayas.
The mountain is especially interesting because its summit structure has caused decades of confusion. Churen Himal consists of three closely connected high summits generally identified as Central, East, and West. Older expedition accounts treated the western summit, measured at approximately 7,371 meters, as the principal or โmainโ summit. Modern topographic mapping, however, places the Central summit at approximately 7,385 meters, making it the highest point of the massif.
This distinction also changes the way the first ascent is described. Masayoshi Fukui and Kozo Hasegawa reached the Central summit on October 24, 1970, which modern mapping identifies as the highest point. Churen Himal rises in western Nepal within the Dhaulagiri Himal, west of the main cluster containing Dhaulagiri II through VI.
It occupies the high mountain country between the Kaphe and Kaya glacier systems, north of the villages and valleys leading toward Gurja Himal and the Dhorpatan region.
Putha Hiunchuli stands only a few kilometers to the west, while Dhaulagiri VI rises immediately east of the Churen massif. Farther east, the skyline becomes progressively higher through Dhaulagiri IV, III, II, and ultimately the 8,167-meter Dhaulagiri I.
The mountain’s southern approaches are associated with the Kaphe Khola and Kaphe Glacier, while the northern side can be reached through the extremely remote Kaya Khola drainage.

Modern detailed topographic mapping tells a slightly different story.
The Central summit is now generally measured at approximately 7,385 meters (24,229 feet), while Churen Himal East and Churen Himal West are each approximately 7,371 meters.
The difference is small โ only around 14 meters โ but it matters when identifying the true highest point.
For that reason, a modern mountain profile is best written using 7,385 meters for Churen Himal, while noting that Nepal’s official historical figure remains 7,371 meters.

Modern topographic data give Churen Himal approximately 600 meters (1,969 feet) of prominence.
Its isolation is approximately 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles).
That means higher terrain is found relatively nearby within the Dhaulagiri massif.
The nearest major higher mountain is Dhaulagiri IV, which rises to approximately 7,661 meters.
Churen Himal therefore has enough prominence to be treated as an important independent summit in lists using a 500-meter cutoff, but it is not an ultra-prominent mountain. Ultra status requires at least 1,500 meters of prominence.
The mountain’s modest prominence relative to its enormous altitude reflects the extraordinary elevation of the surrounding Dhaulagiri landscape.

๐ Early Exploration
The mountaineering history of Churen Himal began with exploration rather than immediate summit attempts.
British officer and explorer J. O. M. Roberts entered the Kaya Khola north of the mountain in 1954 while exploring western Nepal.
Roberts later became closely associated with the exploration of the wider Dhaulagiri region and made the first ascent of Putha Hiunchuli that same year.
A Japanese expedition approached Churen Himal from the north in 1962 and reached approximately 5,750 meters before retreating.
Roberts also explored approaches from the southern side through the Kaphe Glacier during the early 1960s.
These reconnaissance journeys gradually revealed the mountain’s complex geography.

The first major expedition to make a determined attempt on Churen Himal came from Italy in 1969.
Paolo Consiglio led a team that approached from Pokhara through Gurjakhani and the Ghustung or Kaphe drainage.
The Italians examined both the east and west ridges before choosing a southern spur.
The route involved difficult rock climbing and severe high-altitude winds.
The expedition established a series of camps, with the highest at approximately 6,350 meters on or near the west ridge.
Climbers eventually reached about 6,500โ6,600 meters before abandoning the attempt in November.
The expedition had demonstrated that the southern side offered possibilities, but the summit remained nearly 800 vertical meters higher.

A South Korean expedition attempted Churen Himal in spring 1970.
The team established Base Camp near the Kaphe Glacier.
On April 29, Kim Ho Sup and Rin Sing Angyal Sherpa were reported to have reached the East summit.
The claim became controversial almost immediately.
The Japanese Shizuoka expedition that arrived later in 1970 examined the Korean reports and expressed serious doubts about whether the climbers had actually reached the claimed 7,371-meter East summit.
Contemporary American Alpine Journal reporting also noted the disagreement.
Modern Himalayan Database records nevertheless continue to list the Korean climb as the first ascent of Churen Himal East.
The safest historical interpretation is therefore that the East summit has a reported first ascent on April 29, 1970, but the claim was disputed by contemporary Japanese climbers.
๐ฏ๐ต The Shizuoka Expedition
The Academic Alpine Club of Shizuoka mounted the decisive expedition in autumn 1970.
Takashi Serizawa served as expedition leader, while Ryozo Yamamoto was climbing leader.
Other Japanese climbers included Atsushi Oishi, Masayoshi Fukui, Kozo Hasegawa, and Eiji Doma.
The expedition was supported by a group of Sherpas led by Ang Norbu.
The party arrived in Kathmandu in September and flew to Pokhara.
They left Pokhara on September 12 with more than 40 porters, traveling through Beni, Muna, and Gurjakhani before entering the high valley beneath Churen Himal.
Base Camp was established on September 24 at approximately 4,100 meters.
๐ง Crossing the Kaphe Glacier
The route began on the Kaphe Glacier.
Camp I was established at approximately 4,750 meters.
Above it, the climbers entered terrain containing seracs, glacier ice, and steep rock.
Camp II was established at roughly 5,300 meters.
The route higher became substantially more technical.
Above Camp II stood a snow wall around 100 meters high, followed by a steep rocky rib.
Approximately 300 meters of rope were fixed through this section.
Camp III was finally established at approximately 5,650 meters after the expedition crossed a broad snow plateau.

Camp IV was established on October 11 at approximately 6,200 meters.
More fixed rope was required on the steep snow and rock ridge below the camp.
Higher still, the climbers entered a broad upper plateau beneath the East summit.
Camp V was established at approximately 6,600 meters.
The route toward the summit was unusually complicated.
Rather than simply climbing a single ridge, the expedition had to descend from part of the upper plateau into a cirque before climbing again toward the summit crest.
Approximately 400 meters of rope were prepared between the upper camps.
Camp VI, the attack camp, was eventually established at approximately 6,800 meters.
๐ Churen Himal Central โ October 24, 1970
On October 24, Masayoshi Fukui and Kozo Hasegawa left Camp VI at approximately 5 a.m.
Conditions were good.
They reached the top ridge at about 10:40 a.m. and climbed another short snow ridge before reaching a summit.
The expedition identified this point as the Central Peak.
Fukui and Hasegawa spent roughly half an hour on top.
They had originally believed the Central summit would be identical with the mountain’s main western summit.
From their position, however, they could see another summit to the west appearing to be approximately the same height.
They therefore returned to the highest camp rather than traverse farther.
Modern topographic mapping places the Central summit at approximately 7,385 meters, making Fukui and Hasegawa the first climbers to reach Churen Himal’s true highest point.
๐ A Second Central-Summit Ascent
The Central summit was climbed again on October 26.
Eiji Doma, Ang Norbu, and Zangbu followed the established route to the top.
The expedition still wanted to climb what it regarded as Churen Himal’s true โmain peakโ โ the western summit.
Communication problems had complicated the first attempt.
A shortage of batteries for the team’s radio equipment meant the climbing leader could not easily direct the summit parties from the lower camps.
The expedition therefore reorganized its plans for one final attack.

Kozo Hasegawa and Ang Norbu Sherpa left the highest camp for the West summit.
Rather than return over the Central summit, they made a long traverse across the south face of the western peak.
They then climbed directly toward its summit.
At 11:13 a.m. on October 28, 1970, Hasegawa and Ang Norbu reached the top.
The original expedition described the summit as being shaped almost like a spearhead.
In the terminology of the time, this was the first ascent of the main peak of Churen Himal.
Modern mapping has reversed the relative importance of the two summits, but the October 28 climb remains a major part of the mountain’s history.
