Putha Hiunchuli (Dhaulagiri VII)

Putha Hiunchuli is a 7,246-meter (23,772-foot) mountain at the western end of Nepal’s Dhaulagiri Himal. Also known as Dhaulagiri VII, the mountain rises above one of the most remote landscapes in western Nepal, where the great snow peaks of the Dhaulagiri massif gradually give way to the high, arid country of Dolpo.
Although Putha Hiunchuli is far less famous than Dhaulagiri I, it occupies an important place in Himalayan mountaineering history. British officer and explorer J. O. Putha Hiunchuli rises at the western end of the Dhaulagiri Himal in western Nepal.

Putha Hiunchuli is frequently called Dhaulagiri VII.
The numbered Dhaulagiri system developed during early surveying and exploration as geographers attempted to distinguish the numerous enormous summits west of Dhaulagiri I.

In Nepali mountain names, forms related to βhiunβ refer to snow, while βchuliβ is commonly associated with a summit or high peak.

π Jimmy Roberts Explores Western Nepal
The first ascent of Putha Hiunchuli grew out of exploration rather than a large expedition specifically organized around the mountain.
In autumn 1954, J. O. M. Roberts traveled into western Nepal with G. Lorimer and a small group of Sherpas.
Roberts was fascinated by the poorly explored country west and north of Dhaulagiri.
His original plans involved exploration around Phoksundo and Kanjiroba, but Himalayan expeditions of the period often changed objectives once climbers reached the mountains and saw the terrain firsthand.
During reconnaissance in the upper Barbung region, Roberts obtained a view of Putha Hiunchuli.

π Discovering a Possible Route
From a high viewpoint, Roberts saw Putha Hiunchuli’s enormous north or northeast side.
The face appeared as a vast slab of snow and ice leading toward the summit.
Unlike some neighboring Dhaulagiri peaks, whose lower defenses appeared extremely difficult, Putha Hiunchuli seemed to offer a continuous route.
Roberts later recalled having the strong impression that there was a way up.
The group consequently shifted its objective to Putha Hiunchuli.
Even identifying how to reach the mountain was an adventure.
Maps of western Nepal were incomplete, and the team had to explore valleys and determine whether a practical approach existed through the Kaya Khola region.
π§ First Ascent of Putha Hiunchuli
J. O. M. Roberts and Ang Nyima Sherpa eventually established a route on the mountain’s northern side.
The upper mountain consisted largely of broad snow and ice slopes rather than highly technical rock climbing.
The altitude was another matter.
Both climbers were moving above 7,000 meters without the logistical support, detailed weather forecasting, established trails, and communications available to modern expeditions.
On November 11, 1954, Roberts and Ang Nyima reached the summit of Putha Hiunchuli.
Roberts later recalled feeling remarkably strong near the top despite never previously having climbed so high.
The ascent became one of the major achievements of his long Himalayan career.
π The First Major Dhaulagiri Ascent
The ascent was historically significant beyond Putha Hiunchuli itself.
In 1954, none of the great numbered Dhaulagiri summits had yet been climbed.
Dhaulagiri I would not receive its first ascent until 1960.

The team approached from the south and established multiple camps while climbing increasingly steep ice.
Thousands of feet of fixed rope were used to protect difficult sections.
The route eventually climbed the south spur and south face, providing a dramatically different line from the northern route used on the first ascent.
Hiroshi Aoki and Ang Norbu Sherpa reached the summit.
Contemporary published records disagree on the precise April date of the summit, but they consistently identify the climb as the mountain’s second ascent.

Another Japanese expedition climbed Putha Hiunchuli later in 1972.
The climbers established camps progressively higher on the mountain and fixed rope toward approximately 7,000 meters.
On the final section, they crossed a broad snowfield, negotiated a bergschrund, and climbed the central ridge.
Near the summit they encountered a rock band approximately 100 meters below the top and bypassed it before continuing upward.
A first party reached the summit, followed two days later by another group.
The multiple successful climbs during 1972 greatly expanded knowledge of Putha Hiunchuli after nearly two decades with only the original ascent on record.

Putha Hiunchuli gradually received additional ascents during the following decades.
A joint Japanese-Nepalese expedition climbed the mountain in 1985, using the established south-ridge and south-face route.
Akira Mizutani, Yoshinori Nakajima, Pasang Gyalgen, and Kami Rinzi reached the summit.
Other expeditions were less fortunate.
An American-led expedition in 1989 encountered unusually hard ice and dangerous avalanche conditions while attempting the south ridge. The climbers eventually abandoned the attempt rather than repeatedly cross an unstable wind slab.
A German expedition attempting the west ridge in 1992 was stopped much lower after running out of fixed rope during an unexpectedly complicated approach.

A Singaporean expedition climbed the north-northeast face in 1996.

Putha Hiunchuli has also attracted climbers interested in lightweight alpine-style ascents.
In 2008, American climbers Blue Eisele and Jed Brown explored the northern Dhaulagiri region hoping to attempt Churen Himal.
Their expedition involved an extraordinary approach of approximately 240 kilometers on foot and more than 10,500 meters of cumulative ascent before they even reached the intended climbing area.
Poor maps and confusing terrain complicated the expedition.
Although they initially climbed the wrong mountain β making what was probably the first ascent of a roughly 5,800-meter summit locally called Turka Himal β they later turned their attention to Putha Hiunchuli.
Their subsequent climb became the first alpine-style ascent of Putha Hiunchuli from the north.
The expedition demonstrates how remote this section of Nepal remained even in the 21st century.

Putha Hiunchuli entered an entirely different kind of record book in September 2024.
British adventurer Neil Laughton and Nepalese climber Nima Kanchha Sherpa carried bicycles to the summit.
On September 18, both rode bicycles at 7,246 meters, earning the Guinness World Record for the highest-altitude bicycle ride.
Laughton used a folding bicycle, while Nima Kanchha rode a conventional mountain bike.
The record is unusual even by Himalayan standards and demonstrates how Putha Hiunchuli has developed a reputation as a comparatively accessible 7,000-meter snow mountain for highly experienced, properly supported expedition climbers.
βAccessible,β however, is strictly relative.
Riding or even standing unassisted above 7,200 meters remains an extreme-altitude undertaking.
π§ Glaciers and Terrain
Putha Hiunchuli presents very different terrain depending on the side approached.
Its northern slopes contain broad snowfields and glaciers with relatively moderate gradients in places.
Some modern northern routes involve slopes averaging around 30β35 degrees, making the technical climbing less severe than on many 7,000-meter Himalayan peaks.
The southern side is steeper.
Historical expeditions encountered 50- to 60-degree ice, rock bands, glacier shelves, crevasses, and steep walls that required extensive fixed ropes.
