Karjiang: The Himalayan Giant First Climbed in 2024

    Karjiang is a remote 7,000-meter mountain in southern Tibet, rising near the border between China and Bhutan. Its main summit reaches approximately 7,221 meters (23,691 feet), placing it among the world’s 100 highest mountains.

    For decades, Karjiang was especially notable for another reason: it was one of the highest unclimbed mountains on Earth. Japanese and Dutch expeditions reached nearby summits but found the steep, avalanche-prone main peak too dangerous or technically difficult to complete.

    That distinction finally ended on August 13, 2024, when Chinese climbers Liu Yang and Song Yuancheng reached the summit by a demanding new route on the southwest face. Their ascent transformed Karjiang from one of the Himalayas’ great unresolved challenges into the site of one of the most significant first ascents of the 2020s.

    Karjiang remains an exceptionally serious mountain. It is remote, heavily glaciated, exposed to unstable weather, and far beyond the reach of ordinary trekkers. Even after its first ascent, only a very small number of climbers have stood on its summit.

    🏔️ Overview

    Karjiang is part of the high mountain complex surrounding Kula Kangri in the eastern Himalayas. It rises in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, only a few kilometers north of the international border with Bhutan.

    The name Karjiang is sometimes used for the entire cluster of neighboring summits rather than solely for the highest point. The principal summit is therefore frequently identified as Karjiang I, Karjiang South, or the South Peak.

    The Karjiang group includes several significant summits:

    • Karjiang I or Karjiang South: approximately 7,221 m
    • Karjiang II or Central Peak: elevation figures vary among historical sources
    • Karjiang III or Taptol Kangri: approximately 6,824 m
    • Kangmi Kangri: approximately 6,412 m on the northeastern spur

    Older expedition records are not completely consistent about the heights and numbering of the subsidiary summits. In particular, the name Karjiang II has been associated with different reported elevations. The main south summit, however, is widely accepted as the highest point of the group.

    Karjiang’s proximity to the much larger Kula Kangri massif reduces its topographic independence, but not its visual or mountaineering importance. The mountain rises as a steep, sharply defined pyramid of ice, snow, rock, and hanging glaciers.

    Before 2024, Karjiang was commonly described as the fourth-highest unclimbed independent mountain in the world, behind Gangkhar Puensum, Lapche Kang II, and Apsarasas Kangri I. Rankings vary according to the prominence threshold used to distinguish independent mountains from subsidiary summits.

    The successful 2024 climb removed Karjiang from the unclimbed list, although nearby Gangkhar Puensum remains widely recognized as the world’s highest unclimbed mountain.

    📍 Location

    Karjiang rises in Lhozhag County, part of Shannan—also known as Lhoka—in the southern Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The summit stands close to Bhutan, but available maps and modern geographic descriptions generally place the mountain itself north of the international border within Chinese-administered Tibet.

    The mountain is approximately 165 kilometers southwest of Lhasa. Although that distance may not appear enormous on a map, the intervening Tibetan Plateau, restricted border region, high passes, glaciers, and limited transportation make the mountain difficult to approach.

    Karjiang lies immediately northeast of Kula Kangri, one of the highest mountains in the eastern Himalayas. The two mountains form part of a compact concentration of extremely high summits overlooking the Tibetan–Bhutanese frontier.

    Depending on the exact summits being measured, Karjiang is only about three kilometers from the nearest higher part of the Kula Kangri massif. This close relationship explains Karjiang’s relatively modest isolation despite its enormous elevation.

    The Kula Kangri Group

    The broader Kula Kangri mountain complex contains several peaks exceeding 7,000 meters. The principal Kula Kangri summit reaches approximately 7,538 meters, although older references sometimes report different elevations for its main and subsidiary summits.

    Karjiang rises northeast of this massif as a distinct mountain separated from the neighboring higher peaks by a deep saddle. Its approximately 880 meters of prominence is enough for many mountain-ranking systems to treat it as an independent mountain rather than merely another summit of Kula Kangri.

    The surrounding landscape includes:

    • Extensive valley glaciers
    • High snowfields
    • Moraines and glacial debris
    • Steep ice faces
    • Hanging seracs
    • Narrow ridges
    • Sparsely inhabited Tibetan valleys

    The mountain’s northern glaciers drain toward the interior of the Tibetan Plateau. Meltwater from the surrounding ranges also contributes to high-altitude lakes and rivers in the region.

    Pumo Yumco

    About 30 kilometers north of Karjiang lies Pumo Yumco, a striking high-altitude lake on the Tibetan Plateau. The lake stands at roughly 5,000 meters above sea level and receives meltwater from surrounding snowfields and glaciers.

    On clear days, Karjiang and the neighboring Kula Kangri summits can be seen beyond the lake, forming one of the most dramatic mountain skylines in southern Tibet.

    The lake’s name is commonly translated as the “blue jewel floating in the sky,” an appropriate description of its deep blue water and elevated plateau setting.

    A Remote Border Mountain

    Karjiang is not located within a developed trekking destination comparable to the Everest, Annapurna, or Langtang regions of Nepal. Access is shaped by Chinese travel regulations, mountaineering permissions, border restrictions, weather conditions, and the availability of local transportation and logistical support.

    International climbers have historically found it difficult to obtain permission for expeditions to Karjiang. Even experienced teams that received preliminary support or funding were not always able to secure the final permits required to reach the mountain.

    The remoteness has contributed to Karjiang’s limited climbing history. It has also helped preserve the surrounding valleys as one of the quieter and less frequently documented parts of the high Himalayas.

    🏔️ Field Guide Tip: Karjiang should not be treated as a conventional hiking or trekking destination. Independent travel in this sensitive border region may be restricted, and any expedition would require current permits, experienced local assistance, high-altitude climbing skills, and specialized glacier equipment.

    📏 Elevation & Prominence

    Karjiang’s generally accepted elevation is 7,221 meters, equivalent to 23,691 feet. Some mountaineering reports and historical records use a figure of approximately 7,216 meters, partly because of inconsistencies involving the main summit and nearby Karjiang II.

    For general geographic and mountain-ranking purposes, 7,221 meters remains the most widely used elevation for Karjiang’s main south summit.

    How High Does Karjiang Rank?

    Karjiang is often listed between approximately the 97th and 100th highest mountains in the world. Its precise position depends on how a ranking treats subsidiary summits, disputed elevations, prominence, and closely connected neighboring peaks.

    Mountaineering statistician Eberhard Jurgalski has listed Karjiang as the 97th-highest mountain in the world under a system that distinguishes principal mountains from subsidiary tops.

    Other lists place it slightly lower. It is therefore safest to describe Karjiang as one of the world’s 100 highest mountains rather than assigning it a universal rank.

    Karjiang is lower than nearby Kula Kangri by approximately 317 meters. Nevertheless, it remains higher than many better-known Himalayan mountains and exceeds the 7,000-meter threshold by more than 200 meters.

    Prominence

    Karjiang has a topographic prominence of approximately 880 meters, or about 2,887 feet.

    Topographic prominence measures how far a climber must descend from a summit before reaching terrain connected to a higher mountain. Karjiang’s key saddle links it to the neighboring Kula Kangri massif.

    Some topographic datasets report a prominence closer to 895 meters. This small difference likely reflects variations in elevation models and the calculated height of the connecting saddle.

    Although Karjiang does not meet the 1,500-meter prominence standard required to qualify as an ultra-prominent peak, 880 meters is substantial enough for the mountain to possess a strong independent identity.

    Isolation

    Karjiang’s topographic isolation is only about three kilometers, or slightly less than two miles. Its nearest higher terrain is associated with an eastern summit of the Kula Kangri massif.

    This short isolation distance does not mean that Karjiang is a minor peak. Instead, it reflects the extraordinary concentration of high mountains in the region. A 7,221-meter summit can have limited isolation when an even higher 7,000-meter mountain rises immediately beside it.

    Karjiang’s combination of great elevation, moderate prominence, and limited isolation demonstrates why mountain rankings can vary. Elevation measures absolute height above sea level, while prominence and isolation measure a summit’s relationship to the surrounding landscape.

    🪨 Geology

    Detailed peak-specific geological studies of Karjiang are limited in readily available sources. Its broader geological setting, however, is part of the well-documented formation of the Higher Himalaya and southern Tibetan Plateau.

    Karjiang ultimately owes its existence to the collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

    Formation of the Himalayas

    The Indian Plate was once separated from Eurasia by the Tethys Ocean. As India moved northward, the ocean gradually closed, and the continental landmass collided with Eurasia approximately 50 million years ago.

    Because continental crust is relatively buoyant, it did not simply sink into the mantle. Instead, enormous sections of rock were compressed, folded, faulted, stacked, and pushed upward.

    This process produced:

    • The Himalayan mountain chain
    • The uplifted Tibetan Plateau
    • Major thrust faults
    • Thickened continental crust
    • Intense metamorphism
    • Widespread granite intrusions

    The collision is continuing today. Southern Tibet and the Himalayas remain tectonically active, with ongoing crustal deformation, uplift, fault movement, and earthquakes.

    Regional Rock Types

    The Higher Himalaya contains large bodies of metamorphic and igneous rock. Common regional rocks include:

    • Gneiss
    • Schist
    • Quartzite
    • Metamorphosed sedimentary rocks
    • Granite
    • Leucogranite

    Gneiss and schist formed as older rocks were buried, heated, compressed, and transformed during Himalayan mountain building. Younger granitic bodies developed when portions of the thickened continental crust partially melted and magma rose into the surrounding rock.

    Without detailed mapping of the summit pyramid, it would be speculative to assign one precise rock type to every part of Karjiang. The mountain is also so heavily covered by snow and ice that much of its underlying geology is concealed.

    Glacial Sculpting

    Tectonic uplift created Karjiang’s great height, but glaciers helped shape its present appearance.

    Repeated glacial advances carved the surrounding valleys and sharpened the mountain’s ridges. Ice flowing away from the massif transported broken rock downhill, creating extensive moraines below the mountain.

    Freeze-thaw weathering continues to fracture exposed rock. Water enters cracks during warmer periods, freezes as temperatures fall, expands, and gradually breaks the rock apart. This process contributes to the loose mixed terrain encountered near the summit.

    Karjiang’s steep faces also support hanging glaciers and seracs—large, unstable blocks or towers of glacial ice. These features are among the mountain’s greatest hazards because they can collapse with little warning.

    Snow accumulation, avalanches, glacier movement, and rockfall constantly reshape the mountain. Karjiang is therefore not a static landform but part of an active landscape in which geological uplift and surface erosion continue simultaneously.

    🌿 Flora & Fauna

    Karjiang rises far above the elevation at which trees, shrubs, or continuous plant communities can survive. Its upper slopes consist almost entirely of snow, exposed rock, and glacial ice, creating one of the harshest environments in the eastern Himalayas.

    The summit itself lies within the permanent high-alpine and nival zone. Temperatures remain below freezing for much of the year, oxygen levels are extremely low, and powerful winds prevent meaningful soil development. No vascular plants are expected to grow on the mountain’s upper faces or summit ridge.

    Conditions become more hospitable farther down the approach valleys. The lower slopes and plateau surrounding the Karjiang and Kula Kangri groups contain areas of alpine grassland, sparse steppe vegetation, rocky tundra, glacial outwash, and seasonal wetlands.

    Plant Life

    Vegetation around Karjiang varies according to elevation, slope direction, moisture, snow cover, and exposure to wind.

    The most likely plant communities in the lower valleys include:

    • Cold-tolerant alpine grasses
    • Sedges
    • Low cushion plants
    • Small flowering herbs
    • Mosses
    • Lichens
    • Sparse plants growing between rocks
    • Wetland vegetation near streams and lakes

    The short growing season usually begins after snowmelt and lasts only through the warmer summer months. Plants must reproduce quickly before temperatures fall again.

    Many high-altitude plants remain close to the ground, where they receive some protection from wind. Their compact growth forms also help conserve heat and moisture.

    Above approximately 5,500 to 6,000 meters, vegetation becomes extremely limited. Only lichens, microorganisms, or isolated patches of exceptionally hardy plant life may survive on protected rock surfaces. Karjiang’s climbing routes begin near or above this elevation and pass almost entirely through a lifeless world of ice and stone.

    The wider Tibetan Plateau contains the world’s largest area of alpine grassland. These grasslands are ecologically important because they stabilize soil, store carbon, provide habitat for wildlife, and support the pastoral communities that graze yaks, sheep, and goats in the lower valleys.

    Wildlife of the Region

    There are few detailed biological surveys focused specifically on Karjiang. Wildlife associated with the surrounding southern Tibetan Plateau may include species adapted to cold, dry, high-altitude environments.

    Possible regional mammals include:

    • Himalayan or Tibetan blue sheep
    • Plateau pikas
    • Himalayan marmots
    • Tibetan foxes
    • Tibetan wolves
    • Snow leopards
    • Weasels and other small carnivores

    This does not mean that every species has been documented directly on Karjiang. The mountain’s extreme elevation, steep glaciers, and limited human access have prevented comprehensive wildlife surveys.

    Blue sheep are among the most important large herbivores in high Himalayan and Tibetan ecosystems. Their gray-brown coats provide camouflage among rocky slopes, while their specialized hooves allow them to travel across steep terrain.

    Snow leopards occupy remote mountain landscapes across High Asia and prey heavily on wild sheep and goats. The rugged valleys around the Tibet–Bhutan border may provide suitable habitat, although the cats are secretive and rarely observed.

    Plateau pikas and marmots are more likely to be encountered in grasslands below the glaciers. Pikas create burrow systems and serve as prey for foxes, wolves, raptors, and other predators. Their burrowing also affects vegetation and soil structure.

    Birds

    Birdlife is more visible around the valleys, cliffs, and high-altitude lakes than on Karjiang’s glaciated summit slopes.

    Species potentially found in the wider region include:

    • Himalayan griffons
    • Lammergeiers or bearded vultures
    • Golden eagles
    • Ravens
    • Snow pigeons
    • Horned larks
    • Accentors
    • High-altitude waterbirds

    Large raptors use rising air currents to travel efficiently over the plateau. Ravens may also investigate campsites, especially where food or waste has been left exposed.

    Pumo Yumco and other lakes of southern Tibet provide seasonal habitat for waterbirds. The lake environment is ecologically distinct from Karjiang’s glaciated slopes but forms part of the same regional landscape.

    Domestic Animals

    Yaks, Tibetan sheep, goats, horses, and pack animals have long supported communities on the Tibetan Plateau. Expeditions may depend on horses, donkeys, yaks, or local porters to transport supplies toward base camp.

    Pack animals normally cannot travel onto the upper glaciers. During Karjiang’s 2024 first-ascent expedition, the porters stopped at approximately 5,800 meters, forcing the climbers to establish base camp lower than they had originally planned.

    Domestic livestock can be important to local livelihoods, but heavy grazing may also damage fragile alpine vegetation. Recovery is slow because plants grow only during a short summer season.

    🏔️ Field Guide Tip: Visitors should carry out all waste, including food scraps and damaged equipment. Cold, dry high-altitude environments decompose organic material very slowly, and abandoned waste may remain visible for decades.

    🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes

    Karjiang has no ordinary hiking trail or nontechnical route to its summit. Every known line requires expedition-level mountaineering, glacier travel, avalanche assessment, mixed climbing, and prolonged exposure above 6,000 meters.

    The mountain should be considered an objective for highly experienced high-altitude alpinists rather than hikers or recreational climbers.

    As of 2026, only two successful ascents of Karjiang’s main summit have been publicly documented. Both followed the southwest face, although the second team used a somewhat more direct variation.

    The Northern Glacier Approach

    Recorded expeditions have approached Karjiang from the Tibetan side, traveling southward toward the glaciers flowing from the Karjiang and Kula Kangri groups.

    The precise approach may vary according to road conditions, permits, glacier changes, and the chosen base-camp location. Climbers must generally cross:

    • Remote plateau terrain
    • Glacial streams
    • Moraines
    • Loose debris
    • Crevassed glaciers
    • Snow-covered ice
    • High camps exceeding 5,500 meters

    During the 2024 expedition, the team reached a base camp at approximately 5,800 meters after trekking up the glacier north of Karjiang. The site was lower than the climbers preferred because their porters were unwilling or unable to continue farther.

    An approach camp at this height is already higher than the summits of many major mountains. Climbers must therefore complete much of their acclimatization before attempting the face.

    Southwest Face: Buzzer Beater

    The first successful route on Karjiang was established by Chinese climbers Liu Yang and Song Yuancheng in August 2024.

    They named the route Buzzer Beater because the ascent was completed near the end of the limited time available before they had to leave Tibet.

    The route is approximately 1,300 meters high and was graded:

    • AI3 for alpine ice
    • M4 for mixed rock-and-ice climbing
    • Up to 70 degrees on snow slopes

    Grades alone do not fully represent the climb’s seriousness. The greatest difficulties included deep snow, unstable mixed terrain, poor protection, seracs, bad visibility, extreme altitude, and the absence of an easy descent.

    First Attempt in 2024

    Liu and Song began their first attempt on July 31, 2024. They climbed the southwest face and established their first camp beneath a serac at approximately 6,350 meters.

    The following day, they continued to around 6,650 meters and again bivouacked beneath a serac. A storm then deposited about one meter of new snow overnight.

    Despite the snowfall, they climbed approximately another 250 meters before spending two hours cutting a platform large enough for their tent.

    Continued snow, headaches, and deteriorating conditions forced them to retreat. Their experience nevertheless confirmed that the face might be climbable during a sufficiently long weather window.

    First Ascent

    After resting and reassessing the forecasts, Liu and Song returned to base camp on August 10. They began their decisive attempt at 2:30 a.m. on August 11 and reached the base of the southwest face at approximately 5:00 a.m.

    This time, they selected a line nearer the rock wall to the left of their previous route.

    The lower section consisted of relatively comfortable alpine ice. Higher up, the climbers encountered deep snow that made progress slower and more strenuous.

    They reached approximately 6,550 meters and discovered a small natural ice cave. The space was too confined for their tent, so they bivouacked beneath the tent fly.

    Snow fell overnight but stopped early on August 12. The climbers continued to a large crevasse beneath a serac at approximately 6,900 meters.

    Their tent poles broke in the cold, once again leaving them to sleep beneath the flysheet rather than inside a properly erected tent.

    Shortly after midnight on August 13, Liu and Song continued toward the summit. They left most of their equipment at the bivouac and climbed approximately 100 meters to loose mixed ground.

    The terrain offered unreliable protection and required careful movement over snow, ice, and unstable rock.

    At around 2:00 p.m., they finally reached the summit ridge. Turning right, they moved together along the crest for approximately 55 minutes before arriving at Karjiang’s highest point.

    After decades of failed attempts, Karjiang had finally been climbed.

    The Descent

    Reaching the summit completed only half the challenge. Liu and Song began descending in a whiteout and struggled to relocate suitable rappel anchors.

    Unable to find solid ice for their first rappel, they buried a pack lid in the snow and used it as an emergency anchor.

    They then completed four rappels from Abalakov anchors cut into thin ice. Difficult downclimbing returned them to their high bivouac beneath the serac.

    Although exhausted, the climbers decided not to remain there. They continued descending through snowfall and poor visibility while spindrift avalanches repeatedly swept across the face.

    They reached the glacier at approximately 5:00 a.m. on August 14.

    More than half a meter of snow had accumulated on the moraine below. The snow-covered boulders were so difficult and dangerous to cross that the climbers were sometimes forced to crawl.

    It took them four and a half hours to cover approximately 1.5 kilometers between the glacier and base camp.

    Second Ascent

    Karjiang’s second ascent took place only about one month after the first.

    Chinese mountain guides Huang Siyuan and Tong Zhanghao established an advanced base at approximately 5,900 meters and rested for one day. They began climbing at 3:30 a.m. on September 9, 2024.

    Their route followed the southwest face but used a slightly more direct line than Buzzer Beater.

    By approximately 1:00 p.m., they had reached a planned bivouac at 6,900 meters. Because they were ahead of schedule, they stopped for an open bivouac and rested until around midnight.

    Deep, soft snow slowed their final summit push. Nevertheless, the pair reached the top shortly before 4:00 a.m. on September 10 and descended later that day.

    Their climb was completed as a two-day round trip from the foot of the face.

    The second ascent demonstrated that Karjiang’s southwest face could be climbed more quickly under comparatively stable post-monsoon conditions. It did not establish the mountain as an accessible or repeatable objective. The face continued to present severe avalanche, serac, altitude, and weather hazards.

    🧗 Earlier Expeditions and Attempts

    Karjiang remained unclimbed for so long because it combines technical difficulty with unusually complicated access.

    Only a handful of serious attempts were recorded before 2024.

    Japanese Expedition of 1986

    A Japanese expedition attempted Karjiang’s main summit in 1986. The climbers considered the principal peak too difficult and instead turned toward the neighboring central or northern summit.

    They reached Karjiang II by its northwest ridge.

    Historical descriptions of the Karjiang summits are inconsistent. Some sources identify the 1986 summit as Karjiang II, the Central Summit, or the North Summit, and reported elevations vary.

    The important distinction is that the Japanese expedition did not reach the highest point now generally called Karjiang I or Karjiang South.

    This confusion contributed to occasional claims that Karjiang had already been climbed. Later mountaineering records continued to treat the 7,221-meter south summit as unclimbed until 2024.

    Dutch Expedition of 2001

    A six-member Dutch expedition arrived during the post-monsoon season in September 2001. The team consisted of Rudolf van Aken, Pepijn Bink, Court Haegens, Willem Horstmann, Rein-Jan Koolwijk, and Haroen Schijf.

    They established base camp north of the Karjiang group on September 20 at approximately 4,950 meters.

    The climbers initially investigated a possible northeastern route. From a col at around 5,800 meters, they obtained what may have been the first close mountaineering view of Karjiang’s northeast face.

    They estimated the face to be at least 800 meters high. It appeared extremely steep, technically difficult, and exposed to serious objective danger. The team decided not to attempt it.

    The climbers then moved to the opposite side of the mountain to investigate the west face.

    They established another advanced base at approximately 5,700 meters and placed a high camp near 6,300 meters, close to the bottom of the face and below the col between Karjiang and Kula Kangri East.

    Four climbers began ascending the west face. At approximately 6,550 meters, they triggered a slab avalanche more than 25 meters wide.

    The slab fell roughly 200 meters down the face. No one was injured, but the incident indicated that the surrounding snowpack was dangerously unstable.

    The team rappelled down the 55- to 60-degree face using snow anchors and Abalakov anchors. They subsequently examined the south ridge but rejected it because of heavy cornices and unsafe conditions.

    Although they did not climb Karjiang’s main summit, the expedition made the first ascents of two neighboring peaks.

    Taptol Kangri

    On October 19, Pepijn Bink, Willem Horstmann, Rein-Jan Koolwijk, and Haroen Schijf climbed the approximately 6,824-meter northwest summit by its north face and west ridge.

    The team named it Taptol Kangri, and it is now commonly identified as Karjiang III.

    Their route climbed a roughly 500-meter face averaging approximately 50 degrees, with short sections approaching 55 degrees. The expedition assigned it an Alpine grade of D.

    Kangmi Kangri

    Rudolf van Aken and Court Haegens climbed a separate 6,412-meter summit on October 21.

    After crossing a large bergschrund, they climbed a 55-degree ice face and followed a narrow ridge that included unstable snow slopes of up to approximately 65 degrees.

    They named the mountain Kangmi Kangri, translated in the expedition report as “Yeti Snow Mountain.”

    These subsidiary ascents added valuable geographic and climbing information about the previously little-known Karjiang group.

    Permit Difficulties

    Several proposed Karjiang expeditions never reached the mountain because permission was denied, delayed, or otherwise unavailable.

    Southern Tibet contains politically sensitive border areas, and mountaineering regulations may change without warning. Receiving initial support for an expedition does not necessarily guarantee final access to the mountain.

    The long gap between the 2001 attempt and the 2024 ascent was therefore not caused solely by climbing difficulty. Restricted access and the expense of organizing a remote Tibetan expedition also played important roles.

    ⚠️ Major Climbing Hazards

    Karjiang presents nearly every major hazard associated with high-altitude Himalayan climbing.

    Avalanches

    Avalanches are among the mountain’s greatest dangers.

    The 2001 Dutch expedition retreated after triggering a large slab avalanche on the west face. The 2024 first ascensionists encountered deep snow, repeated overnight accumulation, and spindrift avalanches during their descent.

    The southwest face is steep enough to hold and release significant quantities of snow. Snow stability may change rapidly after storms, strong winds, or sudden warming.

    Seracs

    Large seracs rise above portions of the southwest face. Both 2024 teams used bivouac sites beneath or near seracs, largely because the terrain offered few alternatives.

    Seracs can collapse without warning. Even experienced climbers cannot reliably predict the exact timing of an icefall.

    Camping beneath one may provide shelter from wind or snowfall while increasing exposure to falling ice.

    Crevasses

    The approach glacier and upper face contain crevasses that may be hidden beneath fresh snow. The 2024 climbers used a large crevasse beneath a serac as their high bivouac site.

    Crevasse rescue at elevations approaching 7,000 meters is exceptionally difficult because rescuers are already weakened by low oxygen and cold.

    Cornices

    The south ridge inspected in 2001 was heavily corniced. Cornices may extend far beyond the supporting rock or ice beneath them, making the apparent ridge crest unsafe.

    Cold and Wind

    During the 2001 expedition, temperatures near the high camps fell to approximately −25°C, while extremely strong winds forced the team to retreat from a neighboring objective.

    High winds can increase frostbite risk, destroy tents, remove snow from some slopes, and deposit dangerous wind slabs on others.

    Summer: July and August

    July and August coincide with the Asian summer monsoon. Although southern Tibet is drier than the Himalayan slopes farther south, moisture can still bring:

    • Heavy snowfall at high elevation

    • Unstable snow
    • Spindrift avalanches
    • Difficult glacier travel

    Liu Yang could attempt Karjiang only during his university summer vacation. The 2024 account specifically described July and August as less than ideal for this mountain.

    During the first attempt, approximately one meter of snow fell overnight. Even on the successful climb, the team experienced repeated snowfall and poor visibility.

    Their success depended on locating a narrow weather window rather than on generally favorable seasonal conditions.

    Early Autumn: September

    September currently appears to offer the strongest evidence for comparatively favorable climbing conditions.

    The second ascent was completed in early September 2024 during more stable post-monsoon weather. The team climbed more quickly than the first ascensionists and completed the route in a two-day round trip.

    However, deep and soft snow remained present near the summit. September should not be interpreted as reliably dry or safe.

    Storms can still reach the mountain, while shorter days and colder nights become increasingly important later in the month.

    Late Autumn: October

    October may bring clearer skies but also colder temperatures and stronger winds.

    During the Dutch expedition in October 2001, temperatures fell to approximately −24°C to −25°C. Strong winds and unstable snow affected several of the team’s objectives.

    The tradeoff is therefore significant: reduced monsoon influence may improve visibility, but colder and windier conditions can make climbing equally dangerous.

    Spring

    Spring is a traditional expedition season on many Himalayan mountains, but Karjiang has too little recorded climbing history to define a reliable spring window.

    Potential advantages might include longer daylight than in late autumn and gradual seasonal warming. Potential disadvantages include:

    • Heavy winter snow remaining on the mountain
    • Unstable spring snow
    • High winds
    • Cornice development
    • Closed or difficult approach routes

    Any spring expedition would require recent satellite imagery, local observations, and careful assessment of the glacier and snowpack.

    Winter

    Winter would bring extreme cold, short daylight hours, intense wind, and highly demanding logistical conditions.

    No winter ascent of Karjiang has been documented. Given the mountain’s remoteness and technical difficulties, a winter attempt would represent a major exploratory undertaking rather than a conventional expedition.

    Permits and Access

    The theoretical best climbing season is irrelevant unless access is legally available.

    Karjiang occupies one of the most remote and least frequently visited corners of the eastern Himalayas. Its closest surroundings are dominated by glaciers, high passes, unnamed ridges, and other major summits rather than towns or developed visitor attractions.

    Access to the region may be restricted, especially because Karjiang lies near the China–Bhutan border. The nearby places described below should therefore be understood primarily as geographic features rather than easily accessible tourist destinations.

    Kula Kangri

    Kula Kangri is Karjiang’s parent mountain and its closest major neighbor. Its summit stands only about three kilometers southwest of Karjiang.

    Published elevations for Kula Kangri range from approximately 7,538 to 7,554 meters. The variation reflects differences among historical surveys, maps, and mountaineering records rather than any uncertainty that Kula Kangri is significantly higher than Karjiang.

    The Kula Kangri massif contains several high summits:

    • Kula Kangri Main
    • Kula Kangri Central
    • Kula Kangri East
    • Several smaller subsidiary tops and connecting ridges

    A Japanese expedition completed the first ascent of the main Kula Kangri summit in 1986. Its east and central summits were climbed by another Japanese expedition in 2002.

    Karjiang is connected topographically to the Kula Kangri group by a high saddle. This relationship explains why Kula Kangri is considered Karjiang’s parent peak and nearest higher mountain.

    Karjiang Northwest

    A high subsidiary summit rises immediately northwest of Karjiang’s main peak. Modern topographic compilations commonly assign it an elevation of approximately 7,216 meters.

    A Japanese expedition led by Nobuhiro Shingo reached this summit in October 1986 after deciding that Karjiang’s higher south summit was too difficult. Nobuhiro Shingo, Kenji Tomoda, and Hiroshi Iwasaki reached the top on October 14, followed by Tsutomu Miyazaki and Akinori Hosaka on October 16.

    Historical accounts called the summit Karjiang II or the Central Summit. More recent descriptions sometimes distinguish the 7,216-meter northwest summit from a separate central summit of approximately 7,045 meters.

    Karjiang III or Taptol Kangri

    Karjiang III, also known as Taptol Kangri, rises northwest of the main summit. Its generally reported elevation is approximately 6,824 meters.

    Pepijn Bink, Willem Horstmann, Rein-Jan Koolwijk, and Haroen Schijf made its first recorded ascent on October 19, 2001. They climbed a roughly 500-meter north face before following a snow-covered west ridge to the summit.

    The climbers graded the route Alpine D and named the mountain Taptol Kangri after consulting people from the surrounding region.

    Kangmi Kangri

    Kangmi Kangri is a roughly 6,412-meter summit on the northeastern side of the Karjiang group.

    Rudolf van Aken and Court Haegens completed its first recorded ascent on October 21, 2001. Their route crossed a large bergschrund, climbed a 55-degree ice face, and continued along a narrow ridge containing sections of unstable snow.

    Gangkhar Puensum

    Pumo Yumco

    Pumo Yumco—also written Puma Yumco—is a large high-altitude lake approximately 30 kilometers north of Karjiang.

    The lake lies at approximately 5,000 meters above sea level. Its blue water, surrounding brown plateau, and distant snow-covered mountains create one of the region’s most remarkable landscapes.

    On clear days, the Karjiang and Kula Kangri groups can be seen across the lake. A photograph published with the first-ascent account identifies Karjiang, Karjiang II, three Kula Kangri summits, and the Jiexiang Group along the southern horizon.

    Pumo Yumco freezes during winter. NASA observations have also documented changes in the lake’s size, with water levels influenced by precipitation and regional climatic conditions.

    Travel around the lake may still require permits and an authorized itinerary. Visitors should not assume that seeing the mountains from Pumo Yumco means that they can independently continue toward Karjiang’s base camp.

    Lhasa lies approximately 165 kilometers northeast of the Karjiang and Kula Kangri groups. Despite the relatively modest straight-line distance, travel between Lhasa and the mountain requires crossing a vast area of high plateau.

    Expeditions commonly use Lhasa as a logistical and acclimatization base. The 2024 first-ascent team returned to the city between its initial reconnaissance, unsuccessful attempt, and successful summit climb.

    Lhasa is also the principal transportation center for most authorized journeys through the Tibet Autonomous Region.
