Mountains in China: A Guide to the Country’s Highest Peaks and Major Ranges

China contains one of the largest, highest, and most varied mountain landscapes on Earth. Its territory extends from the summit of Mount Everest and the frozen peaks of the Karakoram to the forested mountains of Sichuan, the granite towers of Huangshan, and the sacred summits that have influenced Chinese culture for thousands of years.

The country’s mountains are concentrated most dramatically in the west and southwest, where the Tibetan Plateau meets the Himalayas, Karakoram, Kunlun Mountains, Pamirs, Tian Shan, and Hengduan Mountains. Farther east, lower but historically important ranges such as the Qinling, Taihang, Wuyi, and Greater Khingan Mountains divide climates, guide major rivers, shelter wildlife, and provide some of China’s most popular hiking destinations.

China shares nine of the world’s 14 recognized mountains above 8,000 meters, including Mount Everest, K2, Lhotse, and Makalu. Shishapangma, standing at 8,027 meters, is the only 8,000-meter mountain located entirely within China.

China’s topography generally descends from west to east in a series of enormous geographic steps.

The highest level includes the Tibetan Plateau and the neighboring mountain systems of western China. Much of this region stands more than 4,000 meters above sea level and contains extensive glaciers, alpine deserts, high grasslands, and permanently snow-covered summits.

The second broad level includes the plateaus, basins, and mountain ranges of central China. The Sichuan Basin, Tarim Basin, Loess Plateau, Inner Mongolian Plateau, and Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau are surrounded or divided by major ranges.

The third and lowest level consists mainly of the eastern plains, river valleys, coastal hills, and lower mountain systems. Although eastern China lacks the extreme elevations of Tibet and Xinjiang, its mountains are often more accessible and have played an especially important role in Chinese religion, literature, painting, and tourism.

Elevations can vary slightly among surveys and reference systems. Mount Everest’s currently recognized elevation of 8,848.86 meters was jointly announced by China and Nepal in December 2020.

Mount Everest

Known as Qomolangma in Tibetan, Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level. Its summit stands directly on the boundary between China’s Tibet Autonomous Region and Nepal.

The northern side of Everest rises above the Tibetan Plateau and is approached through the Rongbuk Valley. Rongbuk Monastery, located below the mountain, is one of the highest monasteries in the world and provides a celebrated view of Everest’s North Face.

The first confirmed ascent of Everest was made from Nepal in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. The first complete ascent by the northern route was completed by a Chinese expedition in 1960.

K2

At 8,611 meters, K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth. It stands on the boundary between China’s Xinjiang region and Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan territory.

K2 belongs to the Karakoram, a mountain system famous for steep rock faces, immense glaciers, severe storms, and unusually rugged terrain. Although lower than Everest, K2 is generally considered a more technical and dangerous mountaineering objective.

The mountain’s northern side rises above the remote Shaksgam Valley in China. Access from this direction is extremely difficult, and the overwhelming majority of expeditions approach K2 through Pakistan.

Lhotse

Lhotse rises to 8,516 meters immediately south of Everest. The two mountains are connected by the South Col, while their summits stand approximately three kilometers apart.

The mountain’s enormous South Face is among the tallest and steepest mountain walls in the world. Lhotse was first climbed in 1956 by Swiss mountaineers Fritz Luchsinger and Ernst Reiss.

Makalu

Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain in the world, reaching 8,485 meters on the China–Nepal border. Its isolated, four-sided pyramid makes it one of the most recognizable Himalayan summits.

Makalu is considered one of the more technically demanding 8,000-meter mountains because of its exposed ridges, steep upper slopes, and difficult rock and ice climbing near the summit.

Cho Oyu

Cho Oyu stands west of Everest on the boundary between Tibet and Nepal. At 8,188 meters, it is the sixth-highest mountain in the world.

Its northwest ridge has historically been regarded as one of the comparatively less technical standard routes on an 8,000-meter peak. Nevertheless, Cho Oyu remains an extreme high-altitude mountain where avalanches, storms, crevasses, and altitude illness present serious dangers.

Shishapangma

Shishapangma is the 14th-highest mountain in the world and the lowest of the generally recognized 8,000-meter peaks. Unlike China’s other 8,000-meter summits, it lies entirely within Tibet.

Its location remained largely inaccessible to foreign climbers until the latter half of the 20th century. A Chinese expedition made the first ascent in 1964.

The Himalayas

The Karakoram

The Karakoram extends across China, Pakistan, and India. Its Chinese section lies primarily in southwestern Xinjiang and includes the northern sides of several famous peaks.

The range contains four recognized 8,000-meter mountains associated with Chinese territory:

The Tian Shan

The Tian Shan, whose name is commonly translated as the “Mountains of Heaven,” extends across northwestern China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

Within China, the Tian Shan crosses Xinjiang from west to east and separates two enormous desert basins:

  • The Junggar Basin to the north
  • The Tarim Basin and Taklamakan Desert to the south

Jengish Chokusu, also known as Victory Peak or Tomur Peak, reaches 7,439 meters on the China–Kyrgyzstan border and is the highest mountain in the Tian Shan.

The range separates the high plateau from the Tarim Basin and other arid regions to the north. Its remote peaks rise above deserts, salt lakes, grasslands, and sparsely inhabited valleys.

Definitions of the Kunlun system vary. Some geographic classifications include neighboring chains such as the Altyn-Tagh, while others treat them separately.

The Pamir Mountains

The Hengduan Mountains

The Hengduan Mountains form a complex series of north–south ranges across western Sichuan, northwestern Yunnan, and eastern Tibet.

China’s mountain landscapes were created through several different geological processes.

Continental Collision

Summer

Autumn
