Mount Eddy rises above Northern California’s Trinity Divide, where alpine lakes, wildflower-filled meadows, unusual serpentine soils, and weathered mountain ridges create one of the most distinctive landscapes in the Klamath Mountains. Standing approximately 9,033 feet above sea level, it is the highest summit in the Klamath Mountains and the highest point in Trinity County.

📍 Location

Mount Eddy stands approximately eight miles west of the city of Mount Shasta in Northern California. Its summit lies near the boundary between Siskiyou and Trinity counties, within Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

The mountain rises along the Trinity Divide, an important highland region associated with the eastern Klamath Mountains. The surrounding landscape includes forested ridges, mountain meadows, glacial lakes, and the upper drainages of major Northern California river systems.

🪨 Geology

Mount Eddy belongs to one of the most geologically complicated mountain regions in North America. The Klamath Mountains were assembled from fragments of ancient oceanic crust, volcanic island arcs, sedimentary deposits, and other pieces of crust added to the western edge of the continent over immense spans of geologic time.

The mountain itself is underlain by the Trinity Ultramafic Pluton, a body of rock composed largely of peridotite. Portions of this rock have undergone serpentinization, a process that transforms ultramafic minerals through interactions with water.

These rocks are significant because they originated under conditions associated with the Earth’s upper mantle. Their presence at the surface reveals a long history of tectonic movement, uplift, exposure, and erosion.

Weathering of ultramafic and serpentine rock produces soils that are often thin, rocky, and chemically challenging for plants. Such soils may contain relatively high concentrations of certain metals while lacking nutrients needed by many common species.

The resulting environment favors specialized vegetation adapted to these unusual conditions. This relationship between bedrock and plant life is one reason Mount Eddy has attracted scientific attention.

Glaciation also helped shape the mountain. During colder periods of the Pleistocene, ice modified the Deadfall Lakes drainage and carved the basins that now contain several alpine lakes.

Foxtail pines occupy rocky upper slopes, particularly above approximately 7,800 to 8,000 feet. Their irregular forms, dense clusters of needles, and ability to persist in exposed terrain contribute to the mountain’s distinctive subalpine character.

Other trees found in the area include western white pine, white fir, whitebark pine, and lodgepole pine. Forest composition changes with elevation, slope exposure, and proximity to lakes or streams.

Wet meadows and spring-fed areas support a completely different collection of plants. One of the most unusual is the California pitcher plant, also called cobra lily, which grows in specialized wet habitats and captures insects using modified leaves.

The Forest Service has documented numerous rare or locally significant plant species in the Mount Eddy area, including several buckwheats, drabas, bellflowers, and other plants associated with serpentine soils or high-elevation rocky slopes.

Altogether, researchers have recorded hundreds of plant taxa within the broader study area.

Wildlife commonly associated with these mountain habitats includes black bears, mule deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. The lakes and surrounding wetlands also attract insects, amphibians, and other organisms adapted to seasonal mountain conditions.

Parks Creek Trailhead to Mount Eddy

The most popular route to Mount Eddy begins at Parks Creek Trailhead, situated at approximately 6,800 to 6,850 feet along Forest Road 17.

From the trailhead, hikers follow the Pacific Crest Trail southward across the mountain’s western slopes. This initial section is relatively gentle and passes through forest openings, small meadows, and areas with views toward the Trinity Alps.

After approximately 2.5 to 3 miles, the trail approaches the Deadfall Lakes basin and intersects with the Sisson-Callahan National Recreation Trail.

June and early July may bring abundant wildflowers and strong flows through the mountain’s meadows and creeks. However, snow can linger near the upper lakes, Deadfall Summit, and the final summit trail.

Forest Road 17 and high-elevation trail access may also be affected by late-season snow. Hikers should verify conditions before assuming that the standard route is clear.

Midsummer

July and August usually provide the most dependable access to the Deadfall Lakes and Mount Eddy summit.
