🏔️ Overview
Mount Pinchot is a remote 13,496-foot summit in California’s Sierra Nevada. It rises within Kings Canyon National Park, northeast of Pinchot Pass and east of the John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail corridor.
Although Mount Pinchot falls just short of California’s fourteeners, it is a substantial and topographically independent mountain. Its prominence exceeds 2,100 feet, qualifying it as a P600 summit and distinguishing it from many neighboring Sierra Nevada peaks connected to higher mountains by shallow saddles.
The mountain stands in the Sequoia–Kings Canyon Wilderness, far from paved roads and developed recreation areas. There is no maintained trail to the summit. Every route requires a long wilderness approach, cross-country travel, loose talus and careful navigation.
Mount Pinchot honors Gifford Pinchot, the influential conservationist who became the first chief of the United States Forest Service. Joseph Nisbet LeConte applied the name in the early 1900s, replacing the generic name “Red Mountain,” which had previously been used for the reddish summit.

📍 Location
Mount Pinchot is situated in eastern Fresno County within the remote backcountry of Kings Canyon National Park. The summit lies west of the principal Sierra Crest but remains surrounded by exceptionally high and rugged terrain.
Pinchot Pass, at approximately 12,130 feet, is immediately southwest of the mountain. Both the John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail cross the pass, connecting the Upper Basin to the south with Lake Marjorie and the Woods Creek watershed to the north.
Mount Wynne rises directly south of Mount Pinchot, while the higher mass of Split Mountain dominates the skyline farther north. Lake Marjorie, Bench Lake, Woods Creek and a collection of unnamed alpine basins occupy the surrounding wilderness.
Despite its proximity to two famous long-distance trails, Mount Pinchot is not easily reached. Eastern approaches begin in the Owens Valley and cross Inyo National Forest before entering the national park. Western approaches require lengthy travel through the Kings Canyon backcountry.
📏 Elevation & Prominence
Mount Pinchot has traditionally been shown at a rounded elevation of 13,500 feet, or 4,115 meters. More recent LiDAR-based terrain data place the summit at approximately 13,496 feet, or 4,113.6 meters.
The difference between the traditional and updated figures is only four feet, but the LiDAR value provides a more precise modern estimate. The mountain remains firmly classified as a Sierra Nevada thirteener.
Mount Pinchot has approximately 2,108 feet of topographic prominence. Its key saddle is roughly 11,388 feet above sea level.
With more than 600 meters of prominence, Mount Pinchot qualifies as a P600 summit. This substantial prominence explains why it appears so dominant from Pinchot Pass, the surrounding basins and several sections of the John Muir Trail.
Its topographic isolation is approximately 4.66 miles. Peakbagger identifies Son of Split, a subsidiary summit near Split Mountain, as Mount Pinchot’s nearest higher neighbor. Split Mountain remains the more appropriate named parent peak.
🪨 Geology
Mount Pinchot is especially noticeable because of its reddish and brown rock, which contrasts with the pale granitic landscapes commonly associated with the High Sierra.
Early mountaineer and cartographer Joseph Nisbet LeConte described the mountain as a large rounded mass of red slate. The summit lies within a geologically complex part of the Sierra Nevada where older metamorphic rocks occur alongside younger granitic intrusions belonging to the Sierra Nevada batholith.
Much of the Sierra Nevada’s granite formed when molten rock cooled deep underground during the Cretaceous Period. Later uplift and erosion exposed these intrusive rocks at the surface. Remnants of older sedimentary and volcanic material were altered by heat and pressure, creating the darker metamorphic roof pendants visible on Mount Pinchot and several neighboring peaks.
Glaciers repeatedly occupied the surrounding high country during the Ice Ages. Moving ice deepened valleys, widened basins and sharpened ridges. After the glaciers retreated, they left behind cirques, polished bedrock, moraines and numerous alpine lakes.
Today, freezing and thawing continue to break apart the mountain’s exposed rock. This ongoing weathering produces the extensive talus, scree and unstable blocks encountered on Mount Pinchot’s climbing routes.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
Mount Pinchot rises through subalpine and alpine ecosystems, although its upper slopes stand well above the natural treeline.
Longer approaches pass through forests containing lodgepole pine, mountain hemlock, whitebark pine and other high-elevation conifers. Trees become shorter and more widely scattered near treeline as they are exposed to strong winds, heavy snow and a brief growing season.
Above treeline, vegetation is restricted to sheltered benches, cracks and pockets of thin soil. Alpine buckwheat, sedges, cushion-forming plants and sky pilot may bloom during the short High Sierra summer.
Animals associated with the surrounding subalpine and alpine country include:

- Coyotes

- Clark’s nutcrackers
Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep inhabit parts of the High Sierra, but sightings around Mount Pinchot are uncommon and should never be expected.
American black bears travel through lower valleys and established backpacking corridors. Anyone camping in the area must follow current food-storage regulations and protect food, garbage, toiletries and other scented items from wildlife.
The alpine ecosystem is extremely fragile. Hikers traveling off trail should favor durable surfaces such as rock, gravel and snow rather than walking across small patches of vegetation.
🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes
Mount Pinchot has no maintained summit trail. Routes involve cross-country navigation, steep talus and scrambling at elevations above 13,000 feet. The mountain’s remoteness makes even its technically easier routes serious undertakings.
East Ridge
The East Ridge is generally regarded as the easiest route to the summit. Climbers commonly approach it from Armstrong Canyon or from the Sawmill Pass side of the range.
The route can remain largely Class 2 when climbers use talus slopes below difficult sections of the ridge crest. Staying directly on the crest introduces more exposure and optional Class 3 scrambling.
Armstrong Canyon offers a comparatively direct eastern approach, but reaching it may involve rough roads and changing access conditions. From the upper canyon, climbers travel west through a high basin before gaining the East Ridge.
The Sawmill Pass approach is much longer. It begins low in the Owens Valley, crosses Sawmill Pass and continues through remote terrain toward the mountain’s eastern basin. Most climbers complete it as a multi-day backpacking trip.
West Ridge
The West Ridge is commonly approached from the Taboose Pass Trail and the John Muir Trail near Lake Marjorie.
After crossing Taboose Pass, climbers descend toward the trail corridor and travel south before leaving the maintained route for Mount Pinchot. The West Ridge is generally rated Class 3 and includes loose rock, exposed scrambling and route-finding challenges.
Taboose Pass is itself a demanding objective. The trail gains roughly 6,000 feet from the Owens Valley to the Sierra Crest, making the approach considerably more strenuous than the summit’s elevation alone might suggest.
Southwest Chute
A broad chute on the southwest side provides a nominally Class 2 line between the upper basin north of Pinchot Pass and the summit ridge.
The chute contains exceptionally loose scree, talus and unstable blocks. It is generally considered more suitable as a descent route than an ascent route. Parties must take care not to dislodge rocks onto climbers below.
Mount Wynne–Mount Pinchot Traverse
Mount Wynne stands immediately south of Mount Pinchot. The ridge connecting the two mountains creates one of the area’s most adventurous scrambling routes.
The traverse is generally rated Class 3 and includes exposure, loose rock and complicated route-finding. Some climbers ascend Mount Wynne first and continue north toward Mount Pinchot, allowing them to climb rather than descend the most difficult sections.
This traverse is appropriate only for experienced scramblers comfortable moving through exposed alpine terrain without a maintained path.
🏔️ Field Guide Tip: Do not judge Mount Pinchot solely by its Class 2 rating. Its isolation, long approaches, unstable rock and limited communication make it a serious wilderness climb. Carry offline maps, extra clothing, a headlamp, emergency shelter and a reliable satellite communication device.
Permits and Regulations
An overnight wilderness permit is required for backpacking trips to Mount Pinchot. The correct issuing agency depends on the entry trailhead.
Trips beginning at eastern trailheads such as Taboose Pass or Sawmill Pass generally require an Inyo National Forest permit. Trips beginning within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are administered under National Park Service wilderness regulations.
Permit quotas, reservation periods, fire restrictions, trail closures and food-storage rules can change. Climbers should consult the responsible agency immediately before departure.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit
The most dependable climbing season usually extends from July through September, after much of the seasonal snow has melted from the high passes and summit routes.
Conditions vary significantly according to the winter snowpack:
- May and June: Snow commonly covers passes, chutes and shaded slopes. Winter navigation, traction, an ice axe and avalanche knowledge may be necessary.
- July and August: These months usually provide the easiest access, but afternoon thunderstorms, intense ultraviolet exposure and mosquitoes can be concerns.
- September: Often brings cooler temperatures, fewer insects and relatively stable weather, although early snowstorms remain possible.
- October: Shorter days, freezing nights and early winter storms make conditions increasingly unpredictable.
- Winter: The mountain becomes a remote snow and mountaineering objective requiring specialized equipment and experience.
Summer thunderstorms can develop quickly over the Sierra Nevada. Climbers should begin early and avoid committing ridges or exposed summits when clouds are building.
Water is generally available from lakes and major streams, but smaller sources on eastern approaches can become unreliable late in the season. All backcountry water should be treated.

Mount Wynne rises immediately south of Mount Pinchot and is connected to it by a rugged ridge. The two summits are sometimes combined in a single Class 3 traverse.
Split Mountain
Split Mountain is a prominent fourteener approximately five miles north-northwest of Mount Pinchot. It is Mount Pinchot’s named parent peak, although the closer Son of Split is the nearest point of higher terrain.
Crater Mountain
Crater Mountain stands southwest of Pinchot Pass. Despite its name, it is not a volcano and does not contain a volcanic crater.
Cardinal Mountain
Cardinal Mountain rises near the Sierra Crest north of Taboose Pass. Its colorful metamorphic rock makes it one of the region’s most recognizable summits.
Pinchot Pass
Pinchot Pass is a major crossing on both the John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. The pass provides excellent views of Mount Pinchot, Mount Wynne, Lake Marjorie and the surrounding alpine basins.
Lake Marjorie
