Mount Lincoln

Mount Lincoln rises to approximately 14,293 feet (4,356 meters) in central Colorado’s Mosquito Range, forming the highest summit of the range and the highest point in Park County. Mount Lincoln’s nearest higher neighbor is Mount Massive, located approximately 22.5 miles west-southwest across the upper Arkansas River Valley. This unusually distant NHN helps explain Lincoln’s considerable topographic prominence.

The change of approximately seven feet reflects improved surveying rather than any change in the physical mountain.
Mount Lincoln currently ranks as approximately the 8th-highest recognized Colorado fourteener using modern LiDAR figures.
It also remains the highest point in Park County.

Its key saddle is Tennessee Pass, at approximately 10,424 feet.

The standard route to Mount Lincoln is the West Ridge from Kite Lake.
Although the route is named for Lincoln’s West Ridge, hikers first cross over Mount Cameron before continuing to the Lincoln summit.

The mileage is relatively modest for a Colorado fourteener.

π₯Ύ Kite Lake to the Democrat-Cameron Saddle
From the Kite Lake parking area, hikers follow the established trail beyond the lake.
The route climbs gradually out of the high glacial basin.
Historic mining remains are visible throughout the landscape.
Near approximately 12,200 feet, hikers pass an old collapsed mine structure.
The trail steepens as it climbs toward the broad saddle between Mount Democrat and Mount Cameron.
Loose rock and heavily traveled tundra make staying on the established route particularly important.
Once hikers reach the saddle, those climbing Lincoln turn east toward Cameron.
Climbers completing the full Decalibron usually turn west first to summit Democrat before returning to the saddle.

From the Democrat-Cameron saddle, hikers climb Cameron’s broad western ridge.
The route gradually rises through rocky alpine terrain.
Near approximately 14,000 feet, the grade becomes gentler and hikers reach Cameron’s broad summit at approximately 14,248 feet.
Despite being a named fourteener, Cameron does not satisfy Colorado’s traditional 300-foot prominence rule.

Access to Mount Lincoln remains unusually complicated because portions of the route cross historic private mining claims.
As of 2026, hikers using the standard Decalibron route are required to complete an electronic liability waiver provided by local landowners.

The waiver was created because portions of the route still cross privately owned land containing old mining hazards.
Mount Democrat and Cameron benefited from a major land-acquisition project that transferred important access parcels toward public ownership.

The nearby town of Alma developed directly from the mining economy of the Mosquito Range.

Silver discoveries later expanded mining dramatically.
The surrounding high country became dotted with settlements, mines, mills, roads, and camps.
Many disappeared when ore became less profitable.
Modern Alma remains one of Colorado’s highest incorporated towns and serves as the primary gateway to Mount Lincoln and the Kite Lake peaks.

π Why Is It Called Mount Lincoln?
Mount Lincoln was named for Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States.
According to Colorado fourteener naming histories, Wilbur F. Stone named the mountain in 1861 shortly after Lincoln became president.
Stone later participated in Colorado politics and helped write the state’s constitution.
The timing of the name is particularly interesting because the United States was entering the Civil War.
Nearby Mount Democrat received its own politically charged name during the same general period.
According to local naming traditions, southern miners reportedly renamed Democrat as a political response to Republican President Lincoln.
The two mountains therefore preserve an unusual piece of Civil War-era political history in the Colorado Rockies.

Peakbagger records Wilbur F. Stone in June 1861 as the first documented ascent of Mount Lincoln.

Wildlife found around Mount Lincoln may include:

- Elk at lower elevations
- Mule deer at lower elevations
Pikas are especially characteristic of rocky talus slopes.
Their sharp calls often echo across boulder fields during summer.
These small mammals remain active all winter and survive partly on vegetation they collect and store beneath rocks.

Mountain goats are frequently encountered around the Kite Lake mountains.
Their white coats, black horns, and extraordinary climbing ability make them highly visible against dark alpine rocks.
Mountain goats primarily occupy high mountain habitats and rarely descend below treeline except during severe conditions.
Although they are now strongly associated with Colorado’s alpine landscape, modern mountain goat populations were introduced to the state.
Visitors should never approach, feed, or attempt to touch them.

Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep may also use the broader Mosquito Range.
Unlike mountain goats, bighorn sheep are native to Colorado.
