Research published in The Holocene reconstructed Hardangerjøkulen at approximately 110 km² around its Little Ice Age maximum, near AD 1750. By 2010, the ice cap had lost about 41 km², or 37 percent, of that reconstructed area. Researchers also calculated an average cumulative retreat of the outlet-glacier fronts of approximately 1.3 kilometers by 2013.
