📍 Location
Hellevassfonni is located in Hol Municipality in Buskerud, within the western part of the Hallingskarvet massif. Hallingskarvet stretches roughly east-west across southern Norway, rising conspicuously above the surrounding plateau country between the Geilo area and Finse.

🪨 Geology
Hellevassfonni forms part of the distinctive geology of Hallingskarvet.
Hallingskarvet rises as a broad, resistant mountain block above the surrounding plateau. Together with nearby highland features such as Hardangerjøkulen and Hårteigen, the massif preserves remnants of enormous rock sheets that were thrust across the region during the Caledonian Orogeny hundreds of millions of years ago.
These rocks were once part of a much larger mountain system formed when ancient continental plates collided. Subsequent erosion removed enormous quantities of material, leaving isolated resistant masses such as Hallingskarvet standing above the surrounding landscape.
Later Ice Age glaciers dramatically reshaped the terrain. Repeated glaciations carved valleys, steepened mountain walls, transported rock debris and scoured exposed surfaces.

Much of the upper Hallingskarvet plateau consists of exposed stone, frost-shattered rock, snowfields and sparse alpine vegetation. Strong winds, a short growing season and prolonged snow cover limit the number of plants capable of surviving near the summit.
Hardy alpine species can nevertheless grow in sheltered locations. Lower on Hallingskarvet, where soils become deeper and more nutrient-rich, the vegetation is considerably more varied. Plants recorded in the national park include mountain avens, alpine speedwell, gentians and glacier buttercup.
The wider Hallingskarvet landscape is particularly important for wild reindeer. Reindeer use grazing areas on both sides of the massif and move through the surrounding highlands during different seasons.
Hallingskarvet is also one of the areas in southern Norway associated with the Arctic fox, although sightings are uncommon. Golden eagles, gyrfalcons and other mountain birds use cliffs and high-country habitats within the region.

From Finse, mountain travelers can head toward the Kyrkjedøri area before climbing onto the high western plateau of Hallingskarvet. A high-level traverse can then continue eastward across several minor summits and saddles toward Hellevassfonni.
From Hellevassfonni, experienced mountain travelers can continue east toward Folarskardnuten.
The entire Hallingskarvet traverse is particularly well known as a spring ski journey. Snow cover can make movement across the rocky plateau easier, although winter and spring conditions introduce avalanche hazards, icy slopes, whiteouts and severe weather.
Summer travel replaces snow-covered terrain with extensive boulder fields, bare rock, wet ground and potentially lingering snow patches.
There is no reason to enter the Hellevassfonni glacier itself simply to reach the adjacent summit. Anyone intentionally traveling on glacial ice should have the appropriate equipment and training for glacier travel and crevasse rescue.
