Rising above the glaciers and valleys of Pakistan’s central Karakoram, Masherbrum is one of the world’s highest, most beautiful, and least frequently climbed mountains. Its steep ridges form an almost perfectly proportioned pyramid, while enormous walls of rock and ice descend from a summit standing 7,821 meters (25,659 feet) above sea level.

Masherbrum is also known as K1, a survey designation that predates the now-famous name K2. Although Masherbrum is lower than the nearby 8,000-meter giants, it is considered an exceptionally formidable climbing objective. Its remoteness, complex glaciers, avalanche-prone slopes, technical terrain, and unpredictable Karakoram weather have kept successful ascents remarkably rare.

At 7,821 meters, Masherbrum is generally ranked as the 22nd-highest mountain in the world. It is the highest summit of the Masherbrum Mountains, a major subrange of the Karakoram situated south of the Baltoro Glacier.

🏔️ Overview

Masherbrum occupies an unusual place in the history of the Karakoram. It was one of the first great peaks in the region to receive a survey number, yet its original designation—K1—was eventually replaced by its local name. K2, by contrast, retained its survey name and became one of the most recognizable mountains in the world.

The mountain’s appearance is equally distinctive. Seen from the Baltoro region, Masherbrum rises as a sharp, heavily glaciated pyramid with long ridges descending from a compact summit area. Its upper slopes are guarded by hanging glaciers, unstable snowfields, ice cliffs, rock bands, and steep faces that provide few obvious weaknesses.

Although Masherbrum is sometimes overshadowed in popular accounts by K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums, it is far from an insignificant secondary summit. Its topographic prominence of 2,457 meters (8,061 feet) qualifies it as an ultra-prominent peak, meaning its summit rises at least 1,500 meters above its highest connecting saddle. Its isolation, prominence, and enormous vertical relief make it one of the dominant mountains of the central Karakoram.

Masherbrum has also earned a reputation as one of the most difficult high-altitude mountains on Earth. Its summit was first reached in 1960, but only a small number of expeditions have subsequently succeeded. Even its previously climbed terrain remains serious, while several of its greatest walls and direct lines continue to represent major challenges in modern alpinism.

Why Is Masherbrum Called K1?

In 1856, British surveyor Thomas George Montgomerie, an officer in the Royal Engineers working with the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, observed several immense Karakoram peaks from a distant survey station. He assigned them provisional labels beginning with the letter K, representing the Karakoram.

The mountains were numbered K1 through K5. Masherbrum received the designation K1, while the second surveyed peak became K2. Other survey numbers were later replaced by recognized geographical names:

  • K1 became Masherbrum.
  • K2 retained its survey designation.
  • K3 became Gasherbrum IV.
  • K4 became Gasherbrum II.
  • K5 became Gasherbrum I.

Masherbrum therefore was not named K1 because it was believed to be the highest mountain in the Karakoram. The number reflected its position in Montgomerie’s survey sequence rather than its elevation ranking.

The local name was eventually preferred because the surveyors generally replaced temporary numerical labels when established regional names could be identified. K2 was an exception: no single local name gained sufficiently widespread acceptance, allowing the survey designation to remain in common use.

The precise meaning of Masherbrum is uncertain. The Balti word brum is commonly interpreted as “mountain,” but explanations of the first part of the name vary. Proposed translations such as “queen of peaks” or references to the mountain’s shape are frequently repeated, but no single interpretation is universally accepted.

Masherbrum’s elevation, prominence, isolation, coordinates, key col, and nearest higher neighbor are recorded by Peakbagger. Parent-peak classifications can vary according to the system being used; K2 is identified as its broader island parent, while Broad Peak is the closest higher summit.

📍 Location

Masherbrum is located in the Ghanche District of Gilgit-Baltistan, in northern Pakistan. It stands within the Masherbrum Mountains, a subrange forming part of the much larger Karakoram system.

The Masherbrum Mountains lie primarily on the southern side of the Baltoro Glacier. Across the glacier to the north are the Baltoro Muztagh and several of the Karakoram’s most famous summits, including K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, and Gasherbrum IV. Masherbrum therefore occupies one of the most concentrated areas of extreme mountain terrain anywhere on Earth.

The Masherbrum Mountains

Masherbrum is the highest point of the subrange that bears its name. Other important peaks in the Masherbrum Mountains include:

  • Chogolisa, a broad, twin-summited mountain near the upper Baltoro region
  • K6, a technically difficult granite and ice peak
  • Baltoro Kangri, sometimes called the Golden Throne
  • Link Sar, known for its complex ridges and difficult approaches
  • Yermanendu Kangri, a high summit immediately east of Masherbrum

The subrange forms a rugged divide between the Baltoro Glacier basin to the north and valleys draining toward the Hushe River and Indus River system to the south.

The Baltoro Side

The northern side of Masherbrum rises above the greater Baltoro region. Travelers following the famous Baltoro Glacier trek may see the mountain’s dramatic northern aspects, although changing terrain, intervening ridges, clouds, and glacier bends affect when and where the summit becomes visible.

From this side, Masherbrum appears as a powerful pyramid rising opposite the main group of Karakoram 8,000-meter peaks. Its great northeast-facing terrain is especially intimidating, with steep mixed walls, hanging ice, and few safe lines through the mountain’s defenses.

The Hushe Valley Side

The southern approaches to Masherbrum are connected with the Hushe Valley, one of the principal gateways to the southern Karakoram. The Hushe River flows southward from the high mountain basins before eventually joining the Shyok River.

Hushe village serves as a starting point for treks and mountaineering expeditions entering the surrounding valleys. Approaches from this region lead toward Masherbrum Base Camp and provide access to the southern side of the mountain.

The journey remains remote and demanding. Reaching the base of Masherbrum requires travel through northern Pakistan followed by several days of trekking through high valleys, glacial terrain, and increasingly sparse alpine landscapes.

Travelers should verify whether a trekking program enters from Hushe Valley or follows the Baltoro route before making reservations.

Nearby Communities

The most important inhabited places associated with access to the region include:

  • Hushe, the principal village for southern approaches
  • Khaplu, the main town and administrative center of Ghanche District
  • Skardu, the regional transportation and expedition hub for much of the Pakistani Karakoram

Skardu is commonly used as the organizational base for permits, supplies, transportation, porters, guides, and expedition logistics. From Skardu, travelers continue toward Khaplu and Hushe before beginning the mountain approach.

📏 Elevation & Prominence

Masherbrum reaches an accepted elevation of 7,821 meters (25,659 feet). Some historical accounts round the figure to 25,660 feet, but modern mountain databases generally use 7,821 meters.

This elevation places Masherbrum among the world’s 7,000-meter giants and approximately 22nd among the highest independent mountains on Earth. Elevation rankings can vary slightly depending on whether subsidiary summits with limited prominence are counted as separate mountains.

How Tall Is Masherbrum?

Masherbrum is:

  • 7,821 meters above sea level
  • 25,659 feet above sea level
  • About 1,028 meters lower than Mount Everest
  • About 790 meters lower than K2
  • More than 2,300 meters higher than Mount Kilimanjaro

Its summit lies only 179 meters below the 8,000-meter threshold. Despite narrowly missing classification as an eight-thousander, Masherbrum presents many of the same physiological hazards encountered on the world’s highest mountains.

Climbers approaching its summit must operate in an environment where oxygen availability is drastically reduced. Extreme cold, exhaustion, dehydration, high winds, frostbite, altitude illness, and impaired judgment can combine with the mountain’s technical difficulties.

Topographic Prominence

Masherbrum has a topographic prominence of approximately 2,457 meters (8,061 feet). Its key col is calculated at roughly 5,364 meters (17,598 feet).

Prominence measures how far a mountain rises above the lowest saddle connecting it to higher terrain. Masherbrum’s prominence is well above the 1,500-meter threshold used to classify an ultra-prominent summit.

This considerable prominence demonstrates that Masherbrum is not merely a minor point attached to a neighboring mountain. It is a geographically distinct and dominant peak with its own extensive ridges, glaciers, subsidiary summits, and drainage systems.

Topographic Isolation

Masherbrum has a topographic isolation of approximately 30.26 kilometers (18.8 miles). Its nearest higher neighbor is Broad Peak, located to the northeast.

Isolation measures the shortest horizontal distance from a summit to terrain of equal or greater elevation. Within a radius of about 30 kilometers from Masherbrum’s summit, no point rises higher.

That degree of isolation is particularly impressive in the central Karakoram, where many of the planet’s highest mountains stand relatively close together.

Main and Subsidiary Summits

Masherbrum is commonly described as having a main northern summit and a slightly lower southwestern summit. The principal summit reaches 7,821 meters, while published estimates for the subsidiary summit are generally around 7,800 meters.

The closely grouped high points contribute to the mountain’s complex summit architecture. Climbers reaching the upper mountain must negotiate steep snow and ice terrain before identifying and attaining the true highest point.

🪨 Geology

Masherbrum belongs to the geologically complex central Karakoram, a region shaped by the prolonged interaction between the Indian and Eurasian continental plates.

The broader mountain-building process began when the northward-moving Indian Plate collided with Eurasia. Continued convergence compressed, thickened, folded, faulted, metamorphosed, and uplifted large sections of the crust. Geological studies indicate that deformation, metamorphism, magmatism, and crustal melting have affected the Karakoram over tens of millions of years.

Rocks of the Central Karakoram

The central Karakoram contains a complicated mixture of:

  • Granite and granodiorite
  • Gneiss and other metamorphic rocks
  • Schist
  • Marble and limestone
  • Sedimentary formations
  • Younger intrusive rocks associated with the Karakoram and Baltoro batholiths

The exact rock exposed on an individual face can vary considerably because the region consists of multiple geological units that have been intruded, metamorphosed, folded, faulted, and uplifted.

Glacial Erosion

Tectonic uplift created the high mountain mass, but glaciers helped carve Masherbrum into its present form. Moving ice exploited fractures and weaker zones in the rock, gradually excavating deep valleys and sharpening the ridges between them.

Repeated freezing and thawing further fractured exposed rock. Avalanches, rockfall, glacial movement, and erosion continue to reshape the mountain, although these processes are difficult to detect over short periods.

The resulting landscape includes:

  • Knife-edged ridges
  • Deep glacier-cut valleys
  • Steep rock buttresses
  • Snow-filled couloirs
  • Hanging glaciers
  • Ice cliffs and seracs
  • Avalanche fans beneath the upper faces

These features help explain why Masherbrum is so visually impressive—and why finding a reasonably safe climbing route has always been difficult.

A Mountain of Rock and Ice

Masherbrum cannot be understood as a purely rocky peak covered by a simple layer of snow. Its climbing character is created by the interaction of bedrock, permanent snow, moving glaciers, seasonal accumulation, steep ice, and unstable hanging features.

Conditions can change substantially from one expedition to another. Snowfall may cover rock bands, fill crevasses, overload avalanche slopes, or make technical sections temporarily impassable. Warmer periods can expose more rock while increasing rockfall and destabilizing ice formations.

This constantly changing surface is one reason historical descriptions of a route do not guarantee that the same route will appear—or behave—the same way during a later expedition.

🌿 Flora & Fauna

Masherbrum rises through several sharply contrasting ecological zones. Its lower approaches pass through inhabited valleys where irrigated fields, orchards, trees, and seasonal grazing areas survive beneath an otherwise dry and rocky landscape. Higher elevations become progressively colder and more barren until vegetation disappears entirely beneath glaciers, permanent snow, and exposed rock.

The difference between the Hushe Valley and the upper mountain can be dramatic. Near the villages, cultivated land forms narrow green ribbons beside glacial rivers. Local communities grow hardy crops and maintain small stands of trees wherever water can be diverted onto usable ground.

Above the permanent settlements, the landscape transitions through:

  • Rocky river terraces
  • Sparse grasslands and grazing areas
  • Alpine meadows
  • Low shrubs and hardy flowering plants
  • Glacial moraine
  • Permanent snow and ice

Vegetation becomes extremely limited near Masherbrum Base Camp. Only the most resilient plants can survive in protected, seasonally snow-free areas. Higher on the mountain, the combination of altitude, cold, unstable ground, and continuous ice prevents meaningful plant growth.

Wildlife of the Wider Karakoram

The broader Karakoram supports an impressive range of wildlife despite its harsh environment. Animals found within the wider mountain region may include Siberian ibex, snow leopards, foxes, wolves, marmots, pikas, and several species of high-altitude birds.

Large mammals are rarely seen near heavily glaciated climbing routes. They generally remain in lower valleys, rocky slopes, or remote grazing areas where food is available. Birds are more likely to be observed near camps, especially ravens, choughs, eagles, and other species adapted to mountain environments.

The upper reaches of Masherbrum are essentially lifeless. Above approximately 6,000 meters, climbers enter a world dominated by snow, wind, ice, and exposed stone. Any bird seen at these elevations is usually passing through rather than inhabiting the mountain permanently.

🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes

There is no ordinary hiking route to the summit of Masherbrum. Every line to its highest point involves serious expedition mountaineering, technical climbing, glacier travel, avalanche exposure, and prolonged time at extreme altitude.

Trekkers can, however, approach the southern side of the mountain and visit the Masherbrum Base Camp area without attempting the summit. This journey provides close views of the mountain while avoiding the highly technical terrain encountered by climbing expeditions.

Masherbrum Base Camp Trek

The usual southern approach begins in the Hushe Valley. Travelers commonly reach the region by following a route through:

  1. Skardu
  2. Khaplu
  3. Hushe village
  4. The upper Hushe Valley
  5. The Masherbrum Glacier
  6. Masherbrum Base Camp

Road conditions and trekking itineraries change, but Hushe remains the most important gateway for the southern side of Masherbrum. Historical expeditions began their walk-ins much farther down the valley because modern road access did not yet exist.

The 1957 British expedition left Hushe at approximately 10,000 feet and continued over broken glacial terrain to establish Base Camp near the head of the Masherbrum Glacier. Even reaching the base of the mountain required porters to cross steep snow and unstable moraine while carrying expedition loads.

Modern trekking conditions may be more organized, but the route remains remote. Participants should be prepared for rough trails, river crossings, moraine, loose rock, altitude, cold nights, and limited emergency services.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip: A trek to Masherbrum Base Camp still requires strong fitness and gradual acclimatization. Spending additional time in Hushe or on nearby lower-elevation routes can reduce the likelihood of arriving at base camp before the body has adjusted to the altitude.

The Southeast Face Route

The southeastern side of Masherbrum became the focus of nearly all early expeditions. It was selected because it appeared to offer the most continuous line through the mountain’s defenses, although even this “easiest” side presented enormous difficulties.

The historic route begins on the southern side of the mountain and climbs through the complex Sérac Glacier. Expedition teams then ascend toward a broad feature known as the Dome, cross an upper snow basin, and continue onto the southeast face.

The highest section involves steep snow and ice leading toward the col between Masherbrum’s two principal summits. From the col, climbers must continue toward the main northeastern summit.

The general route can be divided into several major stages:

  • Masherbrum Glacier and Base Camp
  • Sérac Glacier icefalls
  • The Dome
  • Upper glacial basin
  • Southeast face
  • Summit couloir
  • Col between the two summits
  • Final ridge to the main summit

Descriptions from the 1957 and 1960 expeditions show that the lower glacier contained a maze of crevasses, ice walls, séracs, avalanche channels, and unstable snow. Higher on the route, climbers encountered steep mixed terrain and rock slabs concealed beneath thin layers of ice and snow.

The Sérac Glacier

The Sérac Glacier forms one of the first major obstacles on the traditional route. From below, it can appear smoother and more straightforward than it really is. Once entered, the glacier reveals broken icefalls, hidden crevasses, towers of unstable ice, and passages exposed to avalanches from the surrounding walls.

One notorious section was named Scaly Alley by members of the 1938 British expedition. It followed a gully beside the glacier but was threatened by falling ice, snow, and debris.

The exact configuration of the glacier changes over time. A route used by one expedition may be blocked years later by collapsed séracs or widened crevasses. Conversely, new passages may temporarily appear as the ice moves.

This instability means that route information from earlier ascents cannot simply be followed like instructions on an established trail.

The Dome

Above the initial icefalls rises a large snow-and-ice feature known as the Dome. Early expeditions established high camps on or near its shoulder before crossing the upper basin toward the southeast face.

The Dome may appear less technical than the surrounding icefalls, but its broad slopes can become exhausting in soft snow. Climbers have reported sinking deeply while carrying heavy loads, making even moderate terrain physically punishing.

During clear weather, intense sunlight reflects off the snow and produces surprisingly hot daytime conditions. Once the sun disappears, temperatures fall rapidly. This cycle can create soft and unstable snow during the day followed by hard, icy surfaces at night.

Upper Southeast Face

The upper southeast face rises approximately 1,200 meters from the basin toward the summit area. Here the mountain steepens considerably.

Climbers must negotiate combinations of:

  • Deep snow
  • Hard ice
  • Crevasses and bergschrunds
  • Exposed traverses
  • Avalanche-prone slopes
  • Rock ribs
  • Ice-covered slabs
  • Narrow couloirs

The face contains large bands of séracs whose size and position have changed between expeditions. When the 1960 team first viewed the mountain, its members noticed that a major ice barrier had expanded significantly since the photographs taken in 1957. The change forced them to reconsider the planned route before climbing had even begun.

The Summit Couloir

Near the top of the southeast face, early expeditions attempted to reach a steep couloir leading toward the col between the principal summits.

The couloir proved particularly difficult because snow concealed smooth rock slabs beneath it. Crampon points could scrape against the rock while loose surface snow broke away under the climbers’ feet.

The 1957 expedition attempted to bypass the couloir by climbing a neighboring rock buttress. At approximately 7,700 meters, the climbers encountered severe mixed climbing that required six or seven hours to gain only about 60 meters.

With frostbite developing, gloves lost, the hour growing late, and no immediate support available, the team retreated from approximately 7,710 meters—only about 110 vertical meters below the summit.

Major Unclimbed and Alternative Lines

Although the southeast side produced Masherbrum’s first ascent, the mountain possesses several other immense faces and ridges. Some have been attempted, while others remain among the most intimidating objectives in high-altitude mountaineering.

Northeast Face

The northeast face is Masherbrum’s most famous unclimbed problem. Rising for roughly 3,000 meters, it presents a combination of extreme technical difficulty and severe objective danger.

The wall is guarded by:

  • Hanging glaciers
  • Unstable séracs
  • Avalanche funnels
  • Rockfall
  • Icefall
  • Difficult mixed terrain
  • A near-vertical rock barrier high on the face

The hardest climbing begins at an altitude where most climbers are already severely affected by oxygen deprivation. Even reaching the main headwall may require prolonged exposure beneath unstable ice.

A Russian expedition attempted the northeast side in 2006 after reconnaissance the previous year. Illness, injury, poor weather, avalanche danger, and sérac exposure forced the team to abandon the objective without establishing a safe route through the lower face.

David Lama, Peter Ortner, and Hansjörg Auer explored and attempted the face during several expeditions in the 2010s. Their most significant effort gained only about 400 meters before poor snow conditions and objective hazards forced another retreat.

The northeast face remains unclimbed and is frequently described as one of the greatest unresolved challenges in modern alpinism.

North Ridge and North Pillar

The ridges bordering the northeast face may offer more defined climbing lines, but reaching them still requires exposure to dangerous glaciers and avalanche terrain.

Japanese climbers explored the north ridge in 1975 but withdrew after finding its lower section threatened by sérac fall. In 2003, an American-Slovenian team that included Steve House and Marko Prezelj attempted terrain leading toward the north pillar. The team retreated in dangerous avalanche conditions at approximately 5,900 meters.

In 2022, Czech climbers Marek Holeček and Radoslav Groh reached approximately 7,300 meters on the northern side before storms forced them to descend. Their attempt demonstrated that progress was possible, but it also reinforced the scale and seriousness of the route.

Northwest Ridge

The northwest ridge became important during the successful Japanese expedition of 1985. The climbers initially approached from the north but altered their line after encountering dangerous upper-glacier conditions.

Their traverse toward the northwest side eventually produced a successful ascent. The route was complex, committing, and unlike the southeast line used by the first ascensionists.

East Ridge

The long east ridge is another major line that has attracted expeditions. It has remained difficult to access and climb because of unstable glaciers, steep snow, exposed ridges, and persistent bad weather.

A British expedition attempted the east ridge in 1989 while also seeking to climb the neighboring 7,163-meter summit known as Yermanendu Kangri or Masherbrum East. During 49 days on the mountain, the team experienced only 16 days it considered good weather. Repeated storms, deep snow, avalanches, buried camps, and the loss of equipment eventually forced the expedition to withdraw.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

The most practical season for trekking in the Hushe Valley and approaching Masherbrum is generally during the Karakoram summer, from approximately June through September.

July and August usually offer the warmest temperatures in the lower valleys and the most favorable conditions for trekking. Even during summer, however, snow, rain, high winds, and freezing temperatures are possible near base camp.

The climbing season is more complicated. Expeditions must balance several competing conditions:

  • Arriving too early may mean deep pre-monsoon snow.
  • Warmer weather can destabilize séracs and increase rockfall.
  • Fresh snowfall can create severe avalanche danger.
  • Late-season conditions may bring colder temperatures and shorter days.
  • Extended storms can trap teams at high camps.

Unlike the central Himalaya, much of the Karakoram receives significant moisture from winter weather systems as well as occasional summer monsoon influence. Local conditions vary dramatically, and prolonged periods of stable weather cannot be guaranteed.

Trekking Conditions

For trekkers, the main seasonal concerns include:

  • Snow remaining on high sections of the route
  • Flooded streams during warm periods
  • Unstable moraine
  • Rockfall
  • Cold nights
  • Limited visibility
  • Sudden storms

A clear morning can quickly give way to clouds or precipitation. Travelers should carry waterproof layers and warm clothing even when the lower valley forecast appears favorable.

Expedition Conditions

Climbing Masherbrum requires a much longer weather window than an ordinary trek. Teams must transport equipment, establish multiple camps, acclimatize, prepare the route, and wait for conditions that allow a summit attempt.

Historical expeditions spent weeks or months on the mountain. A few days of poor weather could bury fixed ropes, erase tracks, destroy camps, or load the upper slopes with unstable snow.

Why Is Masherbrum So Difficult to Climb?

Masherbrum’s difficulty results from the combination of technical climbing and objective danger. A climber might possess the skill needed to overcome individual rock or ice sections but still be unable to find a reasonably safe way through the mountain.

Extreme Altitude

Masherbrum’s summit stands just 179 meters below 8,000 meters. Climbers on its upper slopes experience severe oxygen deprivation, especially after spending days carrying loads and breaking trail.

At extreme altitude:

  • Movement becomes slower.
  • Recovery takes longer.
  • Appetite often declines.
  • Sleep becomes difficult.
  • Judgment may deteriorate.
  • Minor injuries become harder to manage.
  • Technical moves require far greater effort.

The mountain’s hardest terrain is encountered when climbers are least physically capable of dealing with it.

Avalanche Exposure

Many of Masherbrum’s potential routes pass beneath steep snowfields, hanging glaciers, or séracs. Avalanches can be triggered by new snowfall, wind loading, warming temperatures, or collapsing ice.

In 1957, Base Camp was close enough to the southern walls for expedition members to hear avalanches repeatedly breaking from the mountain. Camps higher on the Sérac Glacier were also threatened by ice cliffs and avalanche debris.

Unstable Séracs

Séracs are towers or blocks of glacial ice formed where a glacier becomes heavily fractured. They can collapse without warning, even during apparently stable weather.

Masherbrum’s routes are particularly dangerous because climbers may be forced to move beneath or beside these structures. Speed can reduce the amount of time spent in exposed areas, but rapid movement is difficult at high altitude and while carrying heavy loads.

Complex Route-Finding

The mountain does not provide a single obvious line from base to summit. Foreshortening can make slopes appear shorter or less steep than they really are.

The 1960 expedition initially underestimated the labor required because the lower face looked relatively straightforward from Base Camp. Once the team entered the glacier, the smooth-looking surface became a maze of séracs, crevasses, and ice walls.

Rapidly Changing Conditions

Masherbrum’s glaciers and ice cliffs are constantly moving. Features photographed during one expedition may be transformed before the next team arrives.

Changes can include:

  • New crevasses
  • Collapsed bridges
  • Enlarged ice barriers
  • Buried rock sections
  • Exposed slabs
  • Expanded avalanche paths
  • Disappearing campsites

This makes the mountain difficult to study from historical accounts alone.

Difficult Retreats

Reaching the summit is only half of a successful ascent. Retreating from Masherbrum can require descending steep, avalanche-prone ground while exhausted and possibly injured.

Fixed ropes may be buried or damaged. Visibility can disappear. High camps may be destroyed or covered by snow. Climbers can be forced to bivouac without shelter if they cannot descend quickly enough.

These dangers have contributed to fatal accidents even after successful summit climbs.

Early Climbing History

Masherbrum attracted mountaineers decades before it was finally climbed. Its isolation, elegant shape, great height, and apparent southeastern route made it a natural target during the early development of Karakoram expedition climbing.

Three major expeditions attempted the mountain before the successful ascent of 1960.

The 1938 British Expedition

The first serious attempt on Masherbrum was made in 1938 by a British expedition led by James Waller.

The team approached from the Hushe Valley and explored the southeast side of the mountain. At the time, climbers possessed limited weather information, heavy equipment, basic clothing by modern standards, and little knowledge of how the mountain’s glaciers were arranged.

Despite these limitations, the expedition established a line through the lower icefalls and advanced high onto the southeast face. The climbers reportedly reached approximately 7,620 meters, an extraordinary altitude for the period.

The party was eventually stopped by deteriorating weather and frostbite. Its members nevertheless demonstrated that Masherbrum might be climbable from the southeast and provided the first substantial information about the route.

Several names given to features during the expedition—including Scaly Alley—continued to be used by later teams.

The 1955 New Zealand Expedition

A New Zealand expedition led by Stanley Conway returned to the southeast side in 1955.

The team arrived in difficult early-season conditions and encountered deep snow before it could make substantial progress on the upper mountain. Climbing and load carrying through unconsolidated snow consumed enormous amounts of energy.

The expedition reached approximately 7,010 meters before abandoning the attempt. An avalanche also destroyed a camp on the Sérac Glacier, illustrating the objective hazards that would confront every later team on the route.

Although unsuccessful, the expedition added further knowledge about the glacier, camp locations, and timing of the climbing season.

The 1957 Manchester Expedition

The closest pre-1960 attempt was made by a British expedition organized by climbers from Manchester and led by Joseph Walmsley.

The team included several accomplished mountaineers, among them Don Whillans, who would later become one of Britain’s most famous high-altitude climbers.

Establishing the Route

The expedition approached through Hushe and established Base Camp near the head of the Masherbrum Glacier in mid-June.

From there, the team worked through three major icefalls on the Sérac Glacier. Camps were placed progressively higher, including a camp on the Dome and additional camps beneath the upper southeast face.

The climbing was made exhausting by alternating conditions. During the night, the slopes could be bitterly cold and hard. After sunrise, the snow softened rapidly, forcing climbers to wade thigh-deep while carrying loads.

Illness and Evacuation

The expedition suffered a serious setback when climber Bob Downes became gravely ill at altitude. His condition was identified as pulmonary edema, requiring him to be carried down from the mountain.

At a time when high-altitude medicine and helicopter rescue were far less developed, evacuating an incapacitated climber from such a remote location was an enormous undertaking.

The remaining members continued the attempt despite losing part of their team.

The Final Summit Attempt

The climbers eventually established a camp at approximately 7,560 meters, close to the base of the final couloir.

They attempted to climb the couloir but discovered that loose snow concealed smooth slabs beneath it. When this route proved too dangerous, they moved onto a neighboring rock buttress.

At approximately 7,700 meters, they encountered mixed climbing comparable in technical difficulty to challenging British rock routes at sea level. The difference was that every move had to be made while exhausted, cold, and severely deprived of oxygen.

After six or seven hours, they had gained only about 60 meters. One climber had lost his gloves, frostbite was developing, and continuing would almost certainly have required an exposed bivouac near the summit.

The team turned back from approximately 7,710 meters, about 300 feet below Masherbrum’s highest point.

Importance of the 1957 Attempt

Although the expedition did not reach the summit, it came extraordinarily close and provided crucial information for the next team.

Its members documented:

  • The best approach through the lower glacier
  • Camp locations
  • The condition of the Dome
  • Hazards on the southeast face
  • Problems in the summit couloir
  • The amount of time required above the highest camps
  • The importance of waiting for better snow conditions

The expedition showed that the summit was within reach, but it also proved that success would require an experienced team, careful preparation, strong logistical support, and favorable weather.

By the end of the 1950s, Masherbrum had been attempted three times. Each expedition had climbed higher or added valuable information, yet the mountain remained unconquered.

In 1960, an American-Pakistani expedition led by Nicholas Clinch arrived in the Hushe Valley carrying knowledge supplied by the earlier teams. Its climbers believed they understood the route.

Masherbrum soon demonstrated that knowing the route and surviving it were very different things.

The 1960 First Ascent of Masherbrum

By 1960, three major expeditions had attempted Masherbrum from the southeast. The 1938 British team had reached approximately 7,620 meters, while the Manchester expedition of 1957 had climbed to about 7,710 meters before frostbite, illness, and difficult mixed terrain forced a retreat.

The mountain appeared climbable, but only under unusually favorable conditions. Any successful expedition would have to overcome the Sérac Glacier, establish a chain of high camps, negotiate the steep southeast face, and find a way through the couloir leading to Masherbrum’s summit ridge.

That challenge was taken up in 1960 by a joint American-Pakistani expedition.

The American-Pakistani Expedition

The expedition was directed by Nicholas B. Clinch, an American mountaineer who had already led the successful first-ascent expedition to Gasherbrum I in 1958. George Irving Bell served as climbing leader.

The American members included:

The Pakistani members included:

  • Captain Jawed Akhter

The expedition also depended heavily on Pakistani high-altitude porters, whose work carrying supplies through deep snow and dangerous glacier terrain was essential to the climb.

The team approached through the Hushe Valley and established Base Camp below the southern side of Masherbrum. Rather than attempting a new route, the expedition followed the southeastern line explored by the earlier British teams.

Establishing the High Camps

The climbers created a chain of camps extending from the Masherbrum Glacier through the Sérac Glacier and onto the southeast face.

Progress was painfully slow. A prolonged period of snow and cloud lasted for more than three weeks, repeatedly burying tracks and increasing avalanche danger. Climbers had to reopen the route each time they moved between camps.

The approximate camp system included:

Exact elevations varied among altimeters and expedition reports, but Camp VII stood only about 200 meters below the summit.

The highest tent was positioned precariously near a bergschrund. It was small, sloping, exposed to falling snow, and barely large enough for two climbers and their equipment.

A Near-Disaster in an Avalanche

Before the final summit push, several expedition members were caught in a surface avalanche while descending through poor visibility.

The slide knocked the roped climbers from their feet and carried them toward an ice cliff. Bell and Clinch managed to arrest the fall with their ice axes before the group was swept over the edge.

Richard McGowan subsequently became delirious and had to be helped down the mountain. Although he recovered, the incident removed one of the expedition’s strongest climbers from the main summit effort.

It was one of several occasions on which the expedition came close to ending in tragedy.

Bell and Unsoeld Leave Camp VII

On July 6, 1960, George Irving Bell and Willi Unsoeld left Camp VII at approximately 5:00 a.m.

Their first objective was the steep couloir above the camp. A shallow tongue of snow covered smooth rock near its base, forcing the climbers to rely on crampon points that sometimes scraped directly against the slabs beneath them.

The couloir steepened to approximately 50 or 60 degrees. Its snow varied from relatively firm sections to deep, unconsolidated powder. Progress required repeatedly kicking steps, compressing the snow, and hauling upward with ice axes and a small shovel.

It took nearly six hours to reach the summit ridge.

The Final Summit Ridge

Bell and Unsoeld emerged from the couloir onto a narrow snow ridge overlooking the Baltoro Glacier.

Two rock steps still separated them from the summit. The first consisted of rotten, frozen rock. The climbers moved cautiously around it while wearing crampons.

The second step was steeper and more solid. A chimney offered a route through the obstacle, although the climbers had to remove and haul their packs because the groove was too narrow to climb while wearing them.

Beyond the rock steps, the ridge became easier. Several rope lengths of firm snow led toward the highest of Masherbrum’s three closely grouped summit crests.

At approximately 3:15 p.m. on July 6, 1960, Bell and Unsoeld reached the summit of Masherbrum.

They became the first people known to stand on the mountain’s 7,821-meter main summit.

From the top, they could see K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums, Chogolisa, the Baltoro Glacier, and an extraordinary concentration of Karakoram summits.

A Dangerous Descent

Bell and Unsoeld spent less than an hour near the summit before beginning their descent.

Several rappels were required on the rock steps. One rope became stuck, forcing Unsoeld to climb back upward and free it.

They eventually descended the couloir and returned to Camp VII at approximately 8:00 p.m.

During the night, Bell developed a serious cough, difficulty breathing, and symptoms later diagnosed as bronchopneumonia. He was extremely ill but recovered sufficiently to descend when the support team arrived.

The mountain had been climbed, but the expedition was not finished.

The Second Summit Team

The expedition had planned from the beginning to place a Pakistani climber on the summit if conditions allowed.

On July 7, Nicholas Clinch, Jawed Akhter, and Richard Emerson climbed toward Camp VII. Bell and Unsoeld passed them while descending.

The following morning, the second summit attempt nearly ended before it began.

Fire at Camp VII

While the climbers were preparing breakfast, a gas cartridge caught fire inside the small tent.

Flaming fuel spread across the tent lining. The entrance zipper was frozen, briefly trapping the climbers inside.

Jawed Akhter managed to smother the flames with a pair of down pants before the tent was destroyed. The fire consumed much of their available water and delayed the summit attempt until approximately 7:30 a.m.

Richard Emerson was suffering from stomach problems and remained at Camp VII. Clinch and Akhter continued upward as a two-person team.

Clinch and Akhter Reach the Summit

The pair climbed the couloir using supplemental oxygen for part of the ascent. They reached the summit ridge during the afternoon and continued over the two rock steps.

At approximately 6:15 to 6:30 p.m. on July 8, Clinch and Akhter reached Masherbrum’s main summit.

Jawed Akhter became the first Pakistani climber to stand on the summit of one of his country’s major high mountains.

The two climbers remained on top for only about 15 minutes. Darkness was approaching, and they faced a long, difficult descent.

They lost time when a rappel rope jammed. Akhter also lost a down mitten, exposing one hand to extreme cold. The pair did not return to Camp VII until approximately 7:30 the following morning—about 24 hours after leaving.

Akhter suffered serious frostbite to his hand and feet. He eventually recovered but lost part of one finger.

The Expedition’s Final Achievement

On July 9, Thomas McCormack and high-altitude porter Abdul Rahim made the first ascent of a nearby summit known as Sérac Peak, estimated at approximately 6,700 meters.

The expedition then evacuated its camps as another major storm arrived. Deep wet snow, avalanches, exhaustion, frostbite, and illness made the final descent dangerous.

All surviving members eventually reached Base Camp.

The first ascent of Masherbrum had required weeks of labor, seven high camps, repeated load carries, extended storms, avalanche escapes, medical emergencies, and two exhausting summit pushes.

The First Ascent of Masherbrum Southwest

Masherbrum possesses two nearly equal principal summits:

  • The main northeastern summit, 7,821 meters
  • The southwestern summit, approximately 7,806 meters

Although the main summit was climbed in 1960, the southwestern summit remained untouched for another 21 years.

The 1981 Polish Expedition

In 1981, a Polish expedition led by Piotr Młotecki targeted the southwest summit.

The expedition followed the Sérac Glacier and southeast-face approach used by the earlier teams. Conditions had changed considerably since 1960, particularly around the enormous sérac barriers on the upper mountain.

On September 16, three climbers left their highest camp:

  • Zygmunt Andrzej Heinrich
  • Marek Małatyński
  • Przemysław Nowacki

They climbed steep snow and ice to reach the col separating Masherbrum’s two highest summits. The team spent the night in a snow hole before beginning the southwest ridge.

Reaching the Southwest Summit

The ridge proved more difficult than expected.

The climbers encountered cornices, rock towers, narrow snow crests, and technically demanding passages. After approximately seven hours, the three reached the southwest summit at about 3:30 p.m. on September 17, 1981.

At the time, the 7,806-meter summit was regarded as one of the highest previously unclimbed summits in the Karakoram.

The team took photographs and rested for about 40 minutes before starting down.

Tragedy During the Descent

Conditions deteriorated as the climbers descended. Strong winds developed, and Małatyński began having severe difficulty with his vision.

Małatyński and Nowacki slipped for a short distance but initially appeared uninjured. Unable to continue safely, the three climbers were forced to bivouac on the exposed ridge.

Heinrich found limited protection on the sheltered side. Małatyński and Nowacki remained exposed to the wind.

When Heinrich reached them the following morning, both men had died during the night.

Heinrich descended alone and survived.

The southwestern summit has not been confirmed as climbed again. It therefore remains one of the highest summits on Earth with only a single documented ascent.

The 1983 Second Ascent of the Main Summit

Twenty-three years passed before anyone repeated the 1960 route to Masherbrum’s main summit.

A five-member Japanese expedition led by Tateshi Sudo established Base Camp in July 1983.

An initial alpine-style attempt late that month was unsuccessful. On August 12, Masahiro Nomura and Takeyasu Minamiura began another summit push.

They followed the southern route used by the American-Pakistani expedition. After five days on the upper mountain, Nomura and Minamiura reached the main summit on August 17, 1983.

Their ascent was the second successful expedition to Masherbrum’s main summit and the first confirmed repetition of the 1960 route.

Two Successful Expeditions in 1985

Masherbrum experienced an extraordinary period of activity in July 1985.

Two independent expeditions approached from the northern and northwestern sides. Both reached the main summit within approximately 22 hours of one another.

These ascents introduced two major new lines to the mountain.

Japanese Ascent from the Northwest

The Japanese Kansai Karakoram Expedition, led by Shin Kashu, approached through the Baltoro region and established Base Camp on the Yermanendu Glacier.

The climbers initially planned to follow the north ridge. Frequent collapses in the upper glacier made the intended line too dangerous, forcing them to traverse toward the northwest ridge.

They established four camps, with the highest at approximately 7,200 meters.

Above the final camp, rotten rock made the ridge itself hazardous. The team moved farther onto the northwest face, eventually climbing toward the col between Masherbrum’s main and southwest summits.

On July 23, 1985, all ten expedition members reached the 7,821-meter main summit:

  • Riichi Nishizutsumi
  • Etsuo Terauchi
  • Hiraoki Ito
  • Yoichi Yabukawa
  • Munehiko Yamamoto

Near the upper mountain, the Japanese climbers discovered the remains of one of the Polish mountaineers who had died after the 1981 ascent of the southwest summit.

The Japanese climb is generally regarded as Masherbrum’s third successful main-summit expedition and the first ascent by a route combining the northern ridges and northwest face.

Austrian Northwest-Face Ascent

At almost the same time, an Austrian expedition led by Robert Renzler was attempting a separate route from the Mandu Glacier.

The lower portion was highly technical, involving rock climbing up to approximately 5.9 and ice approaching 85 degrees. Camps were established at roughly 5,500, 5,950, and 6,300 meters.

Several climbers withdrew because of the extreme danger from falling rock and ice.

Renzler, Andreas Orgler, and Michael Larcher continued upward. After bivouacking at approximately 7,200 meters, they climbed rock sections graded around 5.7 to 5.8, separated by ice couloirs.

Near 7,400 meters, their route joined fixed ropes left by the Japanese team.

Orgler, Larcher, and Renzler reached Masherbrum’s main summit on July 24, 1985, approximately 22 hours after the Japanese climbers.

The Austrian ascent became the mountain’s fourth successful main-summit expedition.

Modern Attempts and Unfinished Routes

The absence of later successful ascents does not mean Masherbrum has been forgotten.

Several strong expeditions have attempted its eastern, northern, northeastern, and western sides. Most have been defeated before reaching the mountain’s most technically difficult sections.

The 1989 East-Ridge Expedition

A British expedition led by Ginette Harrison attempted Masherbrum’s long east ridge in 1989.

The team also planned to climb nearby Yermanendu Kangri. Weather proved the dominant obstacle.

During 49 days on the mountain, the climbers experienced only 16 days they considered favorable. Storms repeatedly buried camps and equipment. One high camp disappeared completely beneath wind-blown snow and could not be located despite hours of probing.

Deep snow, lost equipment, avalanche danger, and continued poor weather eventually forced the expedition to retreat.

The 1990s Attempts

Several expeditions returned to the southern and southeastern sides during the 1990s.

A Russian-American team attempted the southeast face in 1996 but retreated at approximately 7,200 meters because of avalanche danger.

Another American team attempted the east-southeast ridge that year. Avalanches struck around its camps, and the climbers abandoned the route after reaching approximately 6,050 meters.

These attempts demonstrated that even the historically climbed southern side remained extremely dangerous.

Steve House and the North Pillar

In 2003, Steve House, Marko Prezelj, and Matic Jost explored a possible route toward Masherbrum’s north pillar.

The climbers encountered an unusually unstable snowpack. Several slab avalanches were triggered during reconnaissance and acclimatization, including one that swept Prezelj approximately 80 meters.

A final avalanche-prone slope blocked access to the pillar. The team waited for conditions to improve, but the snow remained unstable for several weeks.

They abandoned Masherbrum without reaching the main ridge.

The 2006 Russian Expedition

A powerful Russian team led by Alexander Odintsov arrived in 2006 intending to climb the northeast face.

The wall rises for approximately 3,000 meters and culminates in a steep rock barrier high above the glacier.

The expedition quickly encountered serious problems. Odintsov became ill and required evacuation, while another climber was injured in a crevasse fall.

The remaining team considered approaching by the north ridge, but avalanches, sérac fall, repeated snowfall, and unstable conditions prevented further progress. They withdrew after establishing an advanced camp at approximately 5,800 meters.

David Lama, Peter Ortner, and Hansjörg Auer

David Lama and Peter Ortner visited the northeast face in 2013. Their initial expedition was primarily a reconnaissance, although an injury to Ortner’s knee prevented a more serious attempt.

They returned in 2014 with Hansjörg Auer.

The three planned to climb a direct line in alpine style without fixed camps, fixed ropes, or bolts. They hoped to complete the face in approximately five days before descending the southern side of the mountain.

Poor snow conditions stopped them after roughly 400 meters of climbing.

The team returned again in 2016 but was unable to complete the route. The northeast face remained unclimbed.

The 2022 West-Face Attempt

In August 2022, Czech climbers Marek Holeček, Radoslav Groh, and Tomáš Petreček attempted a new alpine-style route on Masherbrum’s western side.

Petreček withdrew early in the climb because of a medical problem. Holeček and Groh continued.

The two climbers made impressive progress through steep, previously unclimbed terrain, eventually reaching approximately 7,300 meters.

Deep, unconsolidated snow, exhaustion, storms, and deteriorating conditions made continued progress impossible. They turned around and descended safely.

Their high point was one of the most significant modern attempts on Masherbrum, but the west face remained unclimbed.

The 2026 Season

Climbers again announced Masherbrum objectives in 2026.

A Czech team planned to acclimatize on the nearby Biarchedi peaks before considering a new route on Masherbrum. The team completed a major climb on Biarchedi I, but the expedition ended after Jaroslav Bánský died in a fall while climbing Biarchedi II.

Initial reports incorrectly described the accident as occurring on Masherbrum. Later information from the team’s sponsor clarified that it happened on Biarchedi II during the preparatory phase.

The accident should therefore not be recorded as a Masherbrum climbing fatality.

As of July 26, 2026, no new ascent of Masherbrum’s main summit had been confirmed.

Why Has Masherbrum Gone Unclimbed for So Long?

Masherbrum’s lack of recent ascents is especially remarkable because equipment, weather forecasting, communications, clothing, and high-altitude medicine have all improved dramatically since 1985.

Several factors help explain the mountain’s unusual climbing record.

It Is Not an Eight-Thousander

Masherbrum stops only 179 meters short of 8,000 meters, but that difference has a major effect on expedition interest.

Commercial expeditions and record-seeking climbers concentrate overwhelmingly on the fourteen recognized 8,000-meter mountains. Masherbrum offers nearly the same physiological difficulty without contributing to an eight-thousander collection.

There Is No Easy Route

Even Masherbrum’s least difficult known route requires:

  • Complex glacier travel
  • Multiple icefalls
  • Steep snow and ice
  • Avalanche exposure
  • Mixed climbing near 7,700 meters
  • A narrow summit ridge
  • Difficult and time-consuming rappels

It cannot be approached as a straightforward high-altitude snow climb.

Objective Danger Is Extremely High

Potential routes are threatened by hazards that cannot be controlled through climbing skill alone.

These include:

  • Collapsing séracs
  • Hanging glaciers
  • Ice avalanches
  • Rockfall
  • Wind slabs
  • Cornices
  • Deep unconsolidated snow
  • Rapidly changing glacier conditions

Several modern teams possessed the technical ability to climb their intended routes but withdrew because no acceptably safe approach could be found.

Retreat Is Complicated

Most possible routes are long and committing. Once climbers are high on the mountain, retreat may require dozens of rappels through terrain exposed to avalanche, rockfall, or collapsing ice.

A successful ascent may also involve descending an unfamiliar side of the mountain because reversing the climbing route would be too slow or dangerous.

Weather Windows Are Short

Stable Karakoram weather rarely lasts long enough to complete a major alpine-style route on a face rising 3,000 meters.
