Pakistan contains some of the highest, steepest, and most heavily glaciated mountain landscapes on Earth. Its northern regions are dominated by three great mountain systems—the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush—which converge around Gilgit-Baltistan and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The country’s highest point is K2, which reaches 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) on the Pakistan–China border. K2 is the second-highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest and the highest summit in the Karakoram.

Pakistan is associated with five of the world’s traditionally recognized 14 independent eight-thousanders:

The following table ranks independent mountains lying wholly or partly within territory administered by Pakistan. It excludes subsidiary summits that do not meet the commonly used 500-meter topographic-prominence threshold.

Territorial note: Most of Pakistan’s highest mountains are in Gilgit-Baltistan, which is administered by Pakistan. K2 is the highest mountain in Pakistan, the highest summit of the Karakoram, and the second-highest mountain on Earth. Its sharply defined pyramid rises above the Godwin-Austen Glacier near the northern end of the Baltoro region.

The name comes from the 19th-century survey designation assigned to the second prominent Karakoram peak recorded by surveyor Thomas Montgomerie. Other early survey numbers were eventually replaced by local names, but K2 remained in international use.

Broad Peak

Gasherbrum II

Gasherbrum II, historically designated K4, is the 13th-highest mountain in the world. It is often regarded as one of the more straightforward eight-thousanders by normal-route standards, but this description is only relative to other extremely high mountains.

Its standard approach from Pakistan follows the Baltoro Glacier and continues toward the Gasherbrum Glacier. An Austrian expedition made the first ascent in 1956.

Even on its established route, climbers must contend with glaciers, hidden crevasses, avalanches, severe cold, storms, and the effects of prolonged exposure above 8,000 meters.

Gasherbrum IV

Gasherbrum IV reaches approximately 7,925 meters, making it the highest independent mountain in Pakistan below the 8,000-meter threshold.

Originally surveyed as K3, it is famous for its immense West Face, often called the Shining Wall. The face contains some of the most difficult high-altitude rock and mixed climbing in the world.
