Saltoro Kangri has approximately 2,160 metres (7,087 feet) of topographic prominence, making it an ultra-prominent mountain. Its nearest higher neighbor is Gasherbrum I, approximately 38 kilometres to the north-northwest.
The second-highest independent mountain in the range is K12, at 7,428 metres (24,370 feet).
Saltoro Kangri II is higher than K12, reaching approximately 7,705 metres, but it rises only about 225 metres above the saddle connecting it with Saltoro Kangri I. It is therefore generally classified as a subsidiary summit rather than as a separate independent mountain.
The Saltoro Mountains are among the least accessible major mountain ranges on Earth.
Their remoteness is caused by more than elevation alone. The region combines:

Although lower Siachen Base Camp has been opened to regulated domestic tourism from the Ladakh side, official tourism information states that ordinary visitors may travel only as far as the base-camp area. This does not provide access to the upper glacier, the Saltoro Ridge, or the major mountains.
What are the Saltoro Mountains?
The Saltoro Mountains are a system of high peaks, ridges, passes, glaciers, and rock towers forming the western and southwestern side of the Siachen Glacier.
They belong to the Karakoram, not the Himalayas in the strict geographical sense.
The range stands southeast of the central Karakoram groups containing K2, the Gasherbrums, Broad Peak, and Chogolisa. It is separated from neighboring ranges by deep glacier systems and valleys.
The mountains are commonly described as lying between:
- The Siachen Glacier to the east
- The Kondus Glacier and valley systems to the west
- The upper Saltoro and Dansam drainage to the southwest
- The mountain systems toward Sia La in the north

Historical mountaineering accounts often used a narrower definition. A 1961 Himalayan Club report described the Saltoro Kangri group as an approximately 50-kilometre-long and 30-kilometre-wide mountain block bounded by Sia La in the north, Bilafond La and Bilafond Glacier in the south, Kondus Glacier in the west, and Siachen Glacier in the east.
Modern references often use Saltoro Mountains more broadly, extending the system south of Bilafond La toward K12, Gyong La, and the southern ridge.

Saltoro Mountains, Saltoro Range or Saltoro Muztagh?
All three names may appear on maps and in geographic literature:

Saltoro Range is frequently used in mountaineering and military writing.

Saltoro Mountains versus Saltoro Ridge
The Saltoro Mountains and Saltoro Ridge are closely connected but are not perfectly interchangeable terms.

Saltoro Mountains versus Saltoro Kangri
Saltoro Kangri is one mountain massif within the Saltoro Mountains.
The name commonly refers to two connected summits:
- Saltoro Kangri I — 7,742 m
- Saltoro Kangri II — approximately 7,705 m
Saltoro Kangri I is the principal and highest summit.
The entire range should not be called Saltoro Kangri, although some early expedition reports referred to the surrounding high group as the “range of the Saltoro Kangri.”
Saltoro Mountains versus Saltoro Valley
The Saltoro Valley lies west and southwest of the main mountain crest.
Water descending from the mountains enters river and glacier systems flowing toward:
- Dansam
- Kondus
- Saltoro River
- Shyok River
- Indus River
The valley is a human and river landscape, while the Saltoro Mountains form the high glaciated terrain above and to its northeast.
The shared name reflects their geographical relationship but does not mean that the valley and mountain range are the same feature.

How long are the Saltoro Mountains?
There is no single universally accepted length because sources use different definitions.
The narrow Saltoro Kangri group was described by a 1961 Austrian expedition as approximately:
- 50 kilometres long
- 30 kilometres wide
That historical definition covered the high mountain block between Sia La and Bilafond La.
A broader modern definition extends the Saltoro Mountains farther south, incorporating K12 and the ridge system toward Gyong La.
The total north–south mountain system is consequently longer than the 50-kilometre core group.
The safest wording is:
The central Saltoro Kangri group is about 50 kilometres long, while the broader Saltoro Mountains extend farther south along the western side of the Siachen Glacier.
Are the Saltoro Mountains part of the Lesser Karakoram?
Some older geographical sources divide the Karakoram into a principal central axis and a collection of southern or southwestern ranges sometimes called the Lesser Karakoram.
Under this system, the Saltoro Mountains may be grouped with ranges lying southwest of the main line of the greatest Karakoram glaciers.
The term is not used consistently in modern geography.

Why are the mountains so little known?
The Saltoro Mountains are less famous than K2, Broad Peak, or the Gasherbrums despite containing several peaks above 7,000 metres.

- Incomplete or inconsistent mapping
- Multiple names for the same features

The range’s obscurity should not be mistaken for geographical insignificance. Saltoro Kangri is both higher and more prominent than many internationally famous mountains.

Relationship to the Karakoram

The western boundary: Kondus Glacier and valley
The Kondus Glacier and its tributaries drain the western side of the central Saltoro group.
A 1961 expedition approached the mountains by traveling from Skardu through the Indus, Shyok, and Kondus valleys. The party established base camp near the meeting of the Sherpi and Kondus glaciers.
The western terrain includes:

The Kondus side historically provided access to Ghent Kangri, Sherpi Kangri, and the western faces of the Saltoro Kangri group.
The southwestern drainage
The southwestern slopes descend toward the Dansam and Saltoro valleys.
The Kondus and Dansam river systems ultimately feed the Saltoro River, which joins the Shyok River.
The Shyok is a major tributary of the Indus.
This means that water falling on both sides of the range ultimately belongs to the Indus drainage basin, even though it reaches the main river through different glacier and river systems.
The northern boundary
The northern boundary depends on the definition being used.
The narrow Saltoro Kangri group was historically described as ending near Sia La.
Farther north, the mountain geography merges with the high ridges surrounding the upper Siachen Glacier and the Karakoram watershed.
Ghent Kangri lies near the northern part of the central Saltoro group, while neighboring glacier systems provide transitions toward the Gasherbrum and upper Siachen regions.
The southern boundary
The central Saltoro Kangri group was historically bounded on the south by Bilafond La and the Bilafond Glacier.
The broader Saltoro Mountains continue southward through:
- K12
- Chumik mountain groups
- Gyong La
- Additional high ridges toward the lower Siachen region
The exact point where the Saltoro Mountains end and adjoining southern mountain groups begin is not uniformly marked.
The range as a natural barrier
The Saltoro Mountains form an exceptionally effective natural barrier.
Their crest includes:

- Passes above 5,000 metres
- Steep snow and ice slopes
- Corniced ridges

The Saltoro Mountains lie within the wider Kashmir territorial dispute.
The formally delineated Line of Control ends south of the Siachen region. The line of actual military positions farther north is commonly called the Actual Ground Position Line, or AGPL.
The AGPL follows or approaches portions of the Saltoro mountain crest and separates military positions in the high range and neighboring western valleys.
Because maps may reflect different national claims, the same mountain may be labeled as belonging to:

The main Saltoro Mountains are not an ordinary tourism or trekking destination.

Historical sources may give slightly different elevations, particularly for Saltoro Kangri II, Ghent Kangri, and the twin Sherpi Kangri summits.
A 1961 expedition account listed six summits above 7,000 metres within the narrower Saltoro Kangri group. Some of its names, elevations, and summit divisions were later revised as mapping improved.
Saltoro Kangri I
Saltoro Kangri I is the highest mountain in the range.
It reaches:

The summit was historically known as Peak 36, referring to its designation on Survey of India map sheet 52A.
A 1935 expedition led by James Waller and including John Hunt recorded the surveyed position and elevation with notable accuracy. The mountain was described as separating the Kondus and Siachen regions.

Saltoro Kangri II

The summit is connected to Saltoro Kangri I by a high saddle.
Its topographic prominence is only about 225 metres, so most modern mountain lists classify it as a subsidiary summit.
Saltoro Kangri II remains one of the world’s highest high points without a widely verified successful ascent. The Indian Mountaineering Foundation continues to include Saltoro Kangri II in its virgin-peaks records.
K12
K12 reaches:

It lies south of the central Saltoro Kangri group and southwest of the Siachen Glacier.
K12 has approximately 1,978 metres of prominence, making it a major independent mountain and an ultra-prominent peak.
It is the second-highest independent mountain in the Saltoro Mountains.
Its name originated as a Karakoram survey designation and was never replaced by a widely accepted traditional name.
Ghent Kangri
Ghent Kangri, also called Mount Ghent, rises to approximately:

It stands near the northern part of the Saltoro Kangri group.
Its prominence is generally listed near 1,493 metres—only a few metres below the standard 1,500-metre threshold for an ultra-prominent mountain.
The small difference makes the exact prominence sensitive to the selected elevation model and key-col measurement.
Sherpi Kangri
Sherpi Kangri is a high twin-summit mountain northwest of Saltoro Kangri.
Historic records listed its two principal summits at approximately:
- 7,303 metres
- 7,380 metres
The higher summit is now generally treated as the main mountain.
The spelling may appear as:
- Sherpi Kangri
- Sherpigang Kangri
- Sherpi Gangri
These variations reflect differences in transliteration and early mapping.
Why peak lists disagree
Saltoro mountain rankings may differ because some lists include:
- Subsidiary summits
- Historical elevations
- Unnamed points
- Peaks whose prominence has not been measured reliably
- Different interpretations of the range boundary
Saltoro Kangri II is the most important example.
If every summit is ranked only by elevation, it is the second-highest point in the range.
If only independent mountains are counted, K12 is second.
The clearest statement is:
Saltoro Kangri II is the range’s second-highest summit, while K12 is its second-highest independent mountain.
Topographic prominence
The two most prominent mountains of the range are:
- Saltoro Kangri — 2,160 m

Both exceed the 1,500-metre requirement for classification as ultra-prominent mountains.
Their large prominence values demonstrate that they are not merely high points along one continuous crest. Each dominates a substantial surrounding mountain area.
Why the mountains appear even larger
The Saltoro peaks rise above glaciers and valleys already located at great elevation.
Their summit-to-base relief may nevertheless be dramatic.
Historic expeditions encountered:
- Rock and ice walls thousands of metres high
- Hanging glaciers
- Deep glacier basins
- Knife-edged ridges
- Long snow slopes
- Large elevation differences between approach valleys and summits
The combination of high local relief and extreme absolute elevation creates mountains that are visually and technically much larger than their map elevations alone suggest.

When comparing Saltoro peak lists, check whether the source counts subsidiary summits. Saltoro Kangri II is higher than K12, but it has limited prominence and belongs to the Saltoro Kangri massif. K12 is therefore correctly described as the second-highest independent mountain in the range.
The Saltoro Mountains are not accessible simply because Siachen Base Camp appears on a tourism map. The public base-camp zone, upper Siachen Glacier, military-controlled Saltoro Ridge, and mountaineering routes are entirely different destinations with different levels of authorization.
🪨 Geology
The Saltoro Mountains belong to the geologically complex Karakoram mountain system, which developed through the collision and accretion of crustal blocks along the southern edge of Eurasia.
The mountains are part of a region shaped by:
- Continental collision
- Crustal thickening
- Folding and faulting
- Metamorphism
- Intrusion of molten rock
- Continuing uplift
- Intense glacial erosion
Geological research from the wider Karakoram records repeated deformation, high-grade metamorphism, and crustal melting over tens of millions of years. These processes created a mountain belt containing metamorphic rocks, granitic intrusions, deeply fractured ridges, and extremely steep relief.
What type of rock forms the Saltoro Mountains?
No single rock type forms the entire range.
The wider Saltoro–Kondus region contains combinations of:
- Metamorphic rocks
- Slate-like formations
- Granite and related intrusive rocks
- Strongly fractured rock
- Glacial sediment
- Moraine
- Ice-covered bedrock
Historic expedition accounts describe grey slate on Mount Ghent, immense granite pillars near Karmading, serrated rock ridges, steep chimneys, and ridges composed of alternating rock, snow, and ice. These observations provide useful information about climbing terrain but do not amount to a complete modern geological map of every Saltoro summit.
It would therefore be inaccurate to describe Saltoro Kangri, K12, Ghent Kangri, and Sherpi Kangri as being made entirely from one material.
Karakoram mountain building
The Karakoram developed north of the principal Himalayan mountain front.
Its geological history includes the joining of the Indian Plate, the Kohistan–Ladakh island-arc system, and the southern margin of Eurasia.
Compression thickened the crust and lifted rock formations to great elevation. Heat and pressure altered existing rocks, while magma intruded the deep crust and later cooled into granitic bodies.
Subsequent erosion exposed rocks that had originally formed far below Earth’s surface.
This process continues within a tectonically active region. The mountains are affected by:
- Earthquakes
- Fault movement
- Rock fracturing
- Rapid erosion
- Landslides and rock avalanches
A stable-looking rock wall may therefore contain loose blocks and weakened fracture zones.
Glacial carving
The present shape of the Saltoro Mountains owes as much to glaciers as to tectonic uplift.
Large glaciers have eroded the range from several sides, creating:
- Sharp arĂŞtes
- High cols
- Cirques
- Hanging valleys
- Rock towers
- Truncated spurs
- Deep glacier troughs
- Steep ice-covered walls
Glacial erosion helps explain why the mountains rise so abruptly above the Kondus and Siachen glacier systems.
Ice moving along both sides of a ridge gradually cuts into the mountain, sharpening the crest between the glaciers. Where several glacier basins erode one massif, they may leave an isolated pyramid or tower.
Frost weathering
At high altitude, water enters cracks in exposed rock and repeatedly freezes and thaws.
This process can loosen:
- Stones
- Large blocks
- Thin rock flakes
- Entire sections of a fractured face
Gravity, glacier movement, and earthquakes may then send this material onto the slopes below.
Rockfall is especially dangerous when:
- The sun warms a frozen face
- Fresh snow begins to melt
- Climbers move beneath a rock band
- Ice holding loose rock in place weakens
- An earthquake disturbs an unstable slope
Rock avalanches
Large rock avalanches can alter both mountains and glaciers.
In September 2010, a major rock avalanche deposited debris on the Siachen Glacier. Later satellite research found unusually strong thinning and melt beneath and around the deposit, producing a depression more than 100 metres deep in places.
The event demonstrated that a thick rock deposit does not always protect glacier ice. Depending on its structure, heat transfer, buried meltwater, and internal glacier conditions, it may contribute to complex and unexpectedly rapid ice loss.
A landscape still changing
The Saltoro Mountains are not fixed or unchanging.
Their physical terrain is continually modified by:
- Glacier flow
- Avalanches
- Snow accumulation
- Rockfall
- Landslides
- Wind erosion
- Meltwater
- Frost
- Tectonic activity
A ridge photographed during a 1960s expedition may have different cornices, snow cover, exposed rock, and glacier access today.
Historic route descriptions are therefore valuable records, but they are not dependable modern climbing instructions.

The Saltoro Mountains are surrounded by one of the greatest concentrations of mountain ice outside the polar regions.
The principal glacier systems include:

Siachen Glacier
The Siachen Glacier forms the main eastern boundary of the Saltoro Mountains.
Glaciers descending from the range join its western side, while the main ice stream flows south toward the Nubra Valley.
The Siachen system receives ice and snow from mountain groups including:
- Saltoro Kangri
- K12
- Ghent Kangri
- Peaks near Bilafond La and Sia La
- Upper eastern Karakoram massifs
The glacier is not a frozen road.
Its surface contains:
- Crevasses
- Icefalls
- Moraine
- Meltwater channels

Scientific analysis found that the total area of the main Siachen Glacier changed relatively little between 1980 and 2014, but its exposed-ice area decreased and parts of the lower glacier experienced substantial thinning. The glacier therefore cannot accurately be described simply as “growing” or “stable” without explaining which period and section are being measured.
The Karakoram anomaly
Some Karakoram glaciers behaved differently from glaciers in most other high-mountain regions during parts of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
Researchers used the term Karakoram anomaly to describe a pattern in which some glaciers were close to balance, gained mass, or advanced while many glaciers elsewhere were rapidly shrinking.
The term does not mean that:
- Every Karakoram glacier is growing
- Every part of one glacier behaves identically
- Glacier loss has stopped
- Climate change does not affect the region
Research between 2008 and 2016 found a contrast between parts of the central and eastern Karakoram. While some central areas retained slightly positive balances, the eastern sector—including Siachen—showed more negative conditions.
The Saltoro glacier landscape should therefore be discussed glacier by glacier and period by period.
Kondus Glacier
The Kondus Glacier drains the western side of the central Saltoro Mountains.
Historic expeditions reached it by traveling from Skardu through:
- Indus Valley
- Shyok Valley
- Khaplu
- Kondus Valley
- Upper glacier camps
The 1961 Austrian expedition established base camp near the junction of the Kondus and Sherpi glaciers. Its route toward Ghent Kangri involved approximately 23 kilometres of travel along the Kondus Glacier before reaching the upper western ridge.
The glacier collects ice from several high mountain basins.
Its terrain may include:
- Long moraine-covered sections
- Tributary junctions
- Crevasses
- Icefalls
- Avalanche debris
- Rock walls
- Snow-covered upper basins
Peak 36 Glacier
The Peak 36 Glacier is closely associated with Saltoro Kangri, formerly known as Peak 36.
The successful 1962 Japanese–Pakistani expedition reached the mountain through this glacier system.
The team placed its second high camp at the foot of Saltoro Kangri in an upper glacier basin described as a sanctuary. From there, the climbers opened a route through an ice corridor and crossed an approximately 60-metre ice wall using fixed rope and a rope ladder.
The glacier is also connected with routes and passes leading toward the Sherpi Kangri sector.
Its name is historical and does not imply that it belongs only to Saltoro Kangri’s main summit.
Sherpi Gang Glacier
The Sherpi Gang Glacier drains the mountain country around Sherpi Kangri.
It is one of the most difficult glacier approaches described in the range’s expedition history.
The 1976 Kobe University expedition had to transport loads through three major icefalls before reaching a usable upper base camp. The team identified the approach itself—not merely the final ridge—as one of the principal obstacles to climbing Sherpi Kangri.
Hazards included:
- Broken ice
- Crevasses
- Long load carries
- Difficult route-finding
- Unstable snow bridges
- Steep glacier steps
A later American team making the first ascent of Sherpi Kangri II in 2019 also described complicated glacier travel and the need for several additional camps simply to reach the upper basin.
Bilafond Glacier
The Bilafond Glacier lies near Bilafond La and the southern boundary of the narrower Saltoro Kangri group.
Historically, expeditions approaching from the west used Bilafond La to cross toward the Siachen basin.
The glacier and pass system created a rare opening through an otherwise formidable mountain wall.
Bilafond Glacier should not be confused with the much larger Siachen Glacier. It belongs to a connected network of western and cross-range approaches.
K12 Glacier
The K12 Glacier descends from K12 toward the Siachen Glacier.
It provided the main eastern approach for the 1984 Indian Army ascent of K12.
The glacier included a heavily crevassed icefall approximately three kilometres long. Expedition members spent several days:
- Opening a route
- Fixing ropes
- Marking crevasses
- Establishing safe load-carrying lines
Autumn conditions made the exposed glacier ice extremely hard and brittle.

Dongdong Glacier
The Dongdong Glacier lies within the mountain system west of Saltoro Kangri and Sherpi Kangri.
The 1962 Saltoro Kangri summit team looked down toward the Dongdong Glacier and Khorkondus Valley from the upper mountain.
Historic descriptions suggest steep rock faces and glacier basins on this side of the massif.
Spelling varies between maps and expedition reports.
Glaciers as river sources
Glacial meltwater from the range ultimately enters the Indus river system.
On the eastern side:
- Saltoro tributary glaciers join Siachen.
- Siachen meltwater enters the Nubra River.
- The Nubra joins the Shyok.
- The Shyok joins the Indus.
On the western side:
- Kondus and neighboring glaciers feed mountain streams.
- These enter the Dansam and Saltoro systems.
- The Saltoro River reaches the Shyok.
- The Shyok joins the Indus.
Although the mountain crest divides local glacier basins, both sides ultimately drain toward the Indus.
🌨️ Climate
The Saltoro Mountains have an extreme high-altitude continental climate influenced principally by western weather systems and, to a lesser degree, the South Asian summer monsoon.
Conditions vary sharply with:
- Elevation
- Slope direction
- Season
- Glacier basin
- Exposure to wind
- Local topography
There is no permanent weather station on every major summit, so precise summit averages should not be invented.
Westerly weather systems
Much of the Karakoram’s high-elevation snowfall arrives with weather systems moving from the west.
These systems are especially important in winter and spring.
They can produce:
- Heavy snow
- High winds
- Whiteouts
- Avalanche cycles
- Rapidly falling temperatures
- Deep accumulation on upper glaciers
Snow from westerly systems contributes significantly to glacier nourishment.
Summer monsoon influence
The Saltoro Mountains lie near the northwestern limit of strong monsoon influence.
The range is drier than the central and eastern Himalaya, but summer moisture can still reach the region.
The 1961 Ghent Kangri expedition experienced cloud and storm moving eastward as the climber described the beginning of monsoon conditions. Its report also recorded deep soft snow and intense daytime heat before a sudden return to cold, wind, and snowfall.
The mountains may therefore experience:
- Strong sun
- Soft afternoon snow
- Cloud buildup
- Sudden storms
- Fresh snowfall
- Poor visibility
Extreme temperature changes
Direct sunlight can make glacier surfaces feel surprisingly warm during the day.
After sunset, temperatures may fall rapidly.
Climbers may experience:
- Heat while carrying loads on soft snow
- Severe cold at exposed camps
- Frostbite risk on ridges
- Frozen equipment
- Difficulty operating stoves
- Condensation and ice inside tents
The contrast between strong solar radiation and very cold air creates rapid changes in snow stability.
Wind
High ridges are exposed to strong winds.
Wind can:
- Strip snow from one side of a ridge
- Build deep slabs on the opposite side
- Form large cornices
- Damage tents
- Increase frostbite risk
- Hide old tracks
- Create complete whiteout conditions
A summit may be technically possible but unreachable because the wind prevents safe movement along an exposed crest.
Cloud and whiteout
The glaciers contain few permanent landmarks.
During whiteout conditions, snow, cloud, and sky merge into one uniform surface.
Climbers may be unable to distinguish:
- Crevasse depressions
- Changes in slope
- Cornice edges
- The horizon
- A safe route through an icefall
Wands, flags, fixed rope, GPS, compass work, and previous route knowledge may all be necessary, but none removes the underlying danger.
Snow conditions
Snow quality changes with:
- Recent storms
- Wind
- Temperature
- Sun exposure
- Elevation
- Time of day
Historic expeditions encountered:
- Deep powder
- Soft wet snow
- Breakable crust
- Hard ice
- Wind slab
- Corniced ridges
The 1976 Saltoro Kangri attempt failed partly because snow conditions prevented progress on both the south ridge and the earlier 1962 route.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
The high Saltoro Mountains support almost no visible plant life.
Above the glacier basins, the environment is dominated by:
- Snow
- Ice
- Bare rock
- Moraine
- Windblown mineral debris
- Microscopic organisms
- Lichens in limited sheltered locations
There are no forests, permanent grasslands, or large resident animal populations near the main 7,000-metre summits.
Lower valleys
Vegetation occurs at much lower elevations in sheltered sections of the Kondus, Saltoro, Shyok, and related valleys.
Possible plant communities include:
- Sparse alpine grasses
- Hardy flowering plants
- Low shrubs
- Streamside vegetation
- Cultivated plants near inhabited villages
The 1961 Austrian expedition collected approximately 60 plant and flower specimens from the Kondus region and submitted them to a natural-history museum for study. This confirms that the lower approach country supported considerably more biological life than the upper glacier world.
Wildlife
The wider eastern Karakoram and Ladakh–Baltistan region can support cold-adapted wildlife in suitable lower terrain, including:
- Asiatic ibex
- Blue sheep
- Snow leopard
- Wolf
- Red fox
- Marmots
- High-altitude birds
These animals should not be described as regular inhabitants of Saltoro Kangri’s summit slopes or the central glacier basins.
The highest parts of the range provide almost no food or shelter.
Human presence
The most persistent modern human presence in the high Saltoro landscape has been military rather than agricultural or recreational.
Permanent or semipermanent occupation at extreme altitude requires:
- Imported food
- Fuel
- Shelters
- Communications
- Helicopter or overland supply
- Medical support
- Waste management
The environmental effects are difficult to study independently because access is restricted.
Potential concerns include:
- Fuel residues
- Solid waste
- Abandoned equipment
- Disturbance around camps
- Material becoming buried in snow and ice
- Downstream movement of debris through meltwater
Claims about the exact scale of environmental damage should be based on documented research rather than repeated estimates.
đź” Early Exploration and Surveying
The Saltoro Mountains remained poorly known long after many lower Himalayan ranges had been mapped.
Their remote glaciers, difficult passes, and lack of permanent settlements made surveying exceptionally challenging.
Survey of India mapping
Many Saltoro peaks first appeared under numerical survey designations.
Saltoro Kangri was known as Peak 36, reflecting its position on a Survey of India map sheet rather than its mountain-height rank.
Sherpi Kangri appeared as Peak 33 in early accounts.
K12 retained its Karakoram survey number as its standard name.
Early maps sometimes:
- Combined separate peaks
- Reversed summit heights
- Placed mountains on the wrong glacier divide
- Used temporary names
- Assigned different spellings to the same feature
The 1961 Austrian expedition discovered from its high camps that Ghent Kangri’s position and relationship to nearby ridges differed from the maps the team had used during planning.
Fanny Bullock Workman and William Hunter Workman
Fanny Bullock Workman and William Hunter Workman explored the Siachen and Saltoro region during expeditions in the early twentieth century.
Their work included:
- Glacier journeys
- Photography
- Mapping
- High passes
- Observations of previously little-known peaks
In 1911–1912, they approached mountain country around Sherpi Kangri, then known as Peak 33.
The immense glacier barriers prevented a complete exploration of the upper Sherpi basin, but their journeys introduced the mountain to wider geographic and mountaineering audiences.
The 1935 Peak 36 expedition
A British expedition led by James Waller attempted Saltoro Kangri in 1935.
The team included John Hunt, who later led the successful 1953 British Everest expedition.
The climbers approached the mountain then known as Peak 36 and investigated its southeast ridge.
The route involved:
- Glacier travel
- Moraine camps
- An icefall
- A high basin
- Steep snow-and-ice terrain
The expedition did not reach the summit, but its reconnaissance provided important information later used by the 1962 first-ascent team.
Eric Shipton’s 1957 exploration
Eric Shipton led an Imperial College expedition into parts of the eastern Karakoram in 1957.
The expedition explored passes and mountain approaches, improving knowledge of the Siachen and Saltoro region.
Shipton examined the condition of the earlier route toward Saltoro Kangri and reported changes in the ice corridor since the 1935 attempt.
His observations helped the later Japanese–Pakistani expedition evaluate whether the old line remained usable.
Exploration in 1960
An international expedition entered the Kondus region in 1960.
Ernst Senn and Michel Anderl made the first ascent of Mount Depak, while Senn also climbed the feature known as the Silver Throne.
These climbs provided new information about the northern Saltoro and Kondus mountain geography.

The Saltoro Mountains experienced a concentrated period of mountaineering exploration between the 1930s and early 1980s.
After the military conflict expanded in 1984, civilian access to the central and eastern parts of the range became extremely limited.
1961: First ascent of Ghent Kangri
The 1961 Austrian Karakoram Expedition originally hoped to attempt Saltoro Kangri but did not receive permission.
The team instead entered the Kondus region and attempted Ghent Kangri.
After establishing four camps, Wolfgang Axt made a solo summit ascent on June 4, 1961.
His route followed the western ridge from a camp near 6,400 metres.
The climb involved:
- Grey slate
- Poor snow and ice
- A steep ice-cliff barrier
- Deep powder
- Extreme fatigue
- Approaching storm
Axt reached the approximately 7,400-metre summit at about 12:30 p.m. and descended through worsening cloud, snow, wind, exhaustion, and possible cold injury.
The climb was the first ascent of Ghent Kangri and one of the major early successes in the range.
1962: First ascent of Saltoro Kangri
The first ascent of Saltoro Kangri was completed by a joint expedition of:
- Academic Alpine Club of Kyoto
- Karakoram Club of Pakistan
The expedition was led by Professor T. Shidei.
The successful summit climbers were:
- Yasuo Takamura
- Atsuo Saito
- R. A. Bashir
They followed a route based partly on the line investigated by the 1935 British expedition.
The climb required:
- Peak 36 Glacier approach
- An ice corridor
- A fixed rope and rope ladder
- Multiple high camps
- A summit camp near 7,000 metres
- A bivouac above Camp V
The three climbers reached the summit at approximately 10:45 a.m. on July 24, 1962.
They left the summit shortly after noon and returned safely to Camp V that evening.
Later attempts on Saltoro Kangri
Several expeditions later attempted Saltoro Kangri or its secondary summit.
A 1976 Japanese expedition tried:
- The south ridge
- The 1962 route
Poor snow conditions prevented success.
Other expeditions attempted Saltoro Kangri II during the 1970s and early 1980s.
Its ascent status requires careful wording.
Was Saltoro Kangri II climbed in 1981?
Published historical accounts conflict.
A Himalayan Club chronology states that an Indian Army expedition led by Colonel Narindar Kumar climbed Saltoro Kangri II in 1981.
However, the American Alpine Journal summary of the expedition reports that:
- The Saltoro attempt ended approximately 600 feet below the summit.
- The team instead climbed a lower point of about 7,315 metres.
This account does not establish that the true summit of Saltoro Kangri II was reached.
Because the two records are inconsistent, this guide does not describe Saltoro Kangri II as conclusively climbed in 1981.
The safest conclusion is:
Saltoro Kangri II does not have a universally accepted, independently documented first-ascent record in the publicly available sources reviewed for this guide.
K12 climbing history
K12 received its first ascent in 1974.
Shinichi Takagi and Tsutomu Ito reached the summit during a Kyoto University expedition but disappeared during the descent.
A second Japanese team repeated the route in 1975 while searching for them. The search was unsuccessful.
An Indian Army expedition climbed K12 from the Siachen side in 1984 using the K12 Glacier and west ridge.

Sherpi Kangri
Sherpi Kangri was attempted in 1974 and 1975.
The successful first ascent came in 1976, when a Japanese expedition led by Kazumasa Hirai climbed the west ridge.
The approach through the Sherpi Gang Glacier involved:
- Three major icefalls
- Long load carries
- High camps
- Difficult route-finding
- A remote upper glacier basin
The expedition chose the west ridge after judging the east-ridge approach unsafe or excessively long.
Sherpi Kangri II in 2019
In August 2019, Matt Cornell, Jackson Marvell, and Kurt Ross made the first recorded ascent of Sherpi Kangri II by its southeast ridge.
The climbers approached from the western Sherpi Gang Glacier and completed the approximately 1,100-metre route over two days from their highest glacier camp.
Their expedition was notable because the area had seen little documented civilian climbing since the early 1980s.
Sherpi Kangri II should not be confused with Saltoro Kangri II. They are separate summits in different massifs.
Why climbing largely stopped
The range’s modern climbing history is shaped by the military confrontation that began in 1984.
Before that year, expeditions could sometimes approach:
- From the Kondus and Saltoro valleys in the west
- Across Bilafond La
- From Siachen and Nubra in the east
After military positions were established, many of these routes became restricted, inaccessible, or divided by actual control lines.
Later climbing on selected western-edge peaks does not mean the entire Saltoro Range has reopened.
🥾 Historic Approaches & Climbing Routes
There is no single normal route through the Saltoro Mountains.
Each peak requires a separate glacier approach and expedition plan.
Western Kondus approach
The Kondus route historically provided access to:
- Ghent Kangri
- Western Saltoro Kangri approaches
- Sherpi Kangri region
- Kondus glacier peaks
The traditional journey began from the Skardu and Khaplu side and followed the Shyok and Kondus valleys.
The approach involved:
- Long porter stages
- River crossings
- Moraine
- Glacier travel
- Base camps far from roads
- Complex tributary glaciers
Khorkondus and Sherpi approach
Sherpi Kangri expeditions approached through Khorkondus and the Sherpi Gang Glacier.
This route was especially difficult because of the three major glacier icefalls separating the lower valley from the upper basin.
The 1976 expedition regarded moving equipment through the glacier as a central challenge of the climb—not simply a preliminary walk to base camp.
Peak 36 Glacier route
The 1962 Saltoro Kangri first ascent used the Peak 36 Glacier and southeast-side route.
Important features included:
- An upper glacier sanctuary
- Ice corridor
- Sixty-metre ice wall
- Fixed rope
- Rope ladder
- Snow ridge
- High bivouac
It remains a historic expedition route, not an established modern itinerary.
Eastern Siachen approaches
The Siachen side historically provided access toward:
- K12
- Saltoro Kangri
- Bilafond La
- Sia La
- Peaks east and north of the Saltoro crest
These routes now pass through or near heavily controlled military terrain.
A published expedition description does not grant legal permission to repeat the route.
No commercial normal routes
The Saltoro Mountains have:
- No regular commercial expedition program
- No maintained high camps
- No ordinary trekking trails
- No dependable civilian rescue network
- No predictable modern permit pathway across the central ridge
Even an authorized expedition would face expedition-scale technical and logistical difficulties.
⚠️ Major Hazards
Crevasses
Large crevasses may be:
- Open and visible
- Hidden beneath snow
- Covered by weak bridges
- Wide enough to block a route
- Deep enough to make rescue extremely difficult
The range’s expedition records contain multiple crevasse falls.
Icefalls
Icefalls may change continuously.
Hazards include:
- Serac collapse
- Falling ice
- Moving ladders
- Broken snow bridges
- Route closure
- Avalanches from neighboring slopes
A route opened one week may be unusable the next.
Avalanches
Avalanche danger comes from:
- Fresh snow
- Wind slab
- Hanging glaciers
- Cornices
- Rapid warming
- Steep couloirs
- Ice cliffs
John Hunt later described Saltoro Kangri as an “avalanche trap,” reflecting the dangerous snow-and-ice terrain encountered during the 1935 attempt.
Cornices
Wind can build large overhanging cornices along high ridges.
The visible crest may extend beyond solid ground.
Climbers must remain on the supported side of the ridge, which may be difficult to identify during whiteout conditions.
Altitude
Several Saltoro summits exceed 7,000 metres.
At these elevations, climbers may experience:
- Severe fatigue
- Poor judgment
- Loss of coordination
- Dehydration
- Inability to eat
- High-altitude pulmonary edema
- High-altitude cerebral edema
A technically moderate slope becomes far more dangerous when climbed after weeks of load carrying and inadequate recovery.
Extreme remoteness
Rescue can be delayed or impossible.
Historic expeditions depended on:
- Porters
- Radio
- Liaison officers
- Large stores
- High camps
- Team self-rescue
Modern military helicopters operating in the region do not constitute a public civilian rescue service.
Political and military danger
The range contains controlled and disputed terrain.
Additional risks include:
- Entering a restricted zone
- Crossing an actual control line
- Approaching military positions
- Unexploded ordnance
- Misidentification by security forces
- Detention
- Lack of recognized border-crossing status
No historic mountain route should be attempted without explicit contemporary authorization.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit or Climb
The Saltoro Mountains do not have a normal visitor season.
Historic expeditions climbed mainly between late spring and summer, with a few important autumn ascents.
May and June
Potential advantages include:
- Longer daylight
- Substantial snow cover over some crevasses
- Time to establish a long chain of camps
- Conditions before the strongest summer weather influence
Potential disadvantages include:
- Deep snow
- Low snowline
- Avalanche danger
- Soft afternoon conditions
- Difficult load carrying
The 1961 Ghent Kangri expedition began unusually early and used skis on deep snow. It also encountered repeated storms and soft conditions.
July and August
Many historic first ascents occurred during midsummer:
- Saltoro Kangri — July 24, 1962
- K12 — August 30, 1974
- Sherpi Kangri II — August 7, 2019
Advantages may include:
- Long daylight
- Comparatively warmer temperatures
- More established approach conditions
Hazards remain severe:
- Summer storms
- Monsoon incursions
- Avalanches
- Soft snow
- Glacier melt
- Rockfall
- Late summit descents
September and October
The 1984 K12 expedition climbed in October.
Autumn may bring:
- Clearer periods
- Harder glacier surfaces
- Lower temperatures
- Shorter daylight
- Early winter storms
Hard ice can make cramponing more difficult, while cold and wind greatly increase frostbite risk.
One successful autumn expedition does not establish a generally recommended season for the whole range.
Modern access is the deciding factor
Weather is not the only consideration.
The principal limitation is legal and military access.
Before even considering season, a proposed expedition would need current authorization from the relevant:
- National government
- Military authorities
- Mountaineering body
- Regional administration
- Security agencies
- Border authorities
Without such authorization, there is no valid climbing season.
🏔️ Field Guide Tip
Treat every Saltoro expedition account as a historical record, not a current route guide. Glaciers move, icefalls collapse, control lines remain sensitive, and permits granted before 1984 say nothing about modern access.
When researching Saltoro Kangri II, note the conflict between the Himalayan Club chronology and the American Alpine Journal account of the 1981 expedition. Until stronger summit evidence is available, describe the peak as having no universally verified recorded ascent rather than repeating an uncertain claim as fact.

The Saltoro Mountains contain several summits above 7,000 metres, but their exact ranking depends on whether closely connected subsidiary summits are counted separately.
The most important peaks are concentrated in two broad areas:
- The central Saltoro Kangri–Ghent–Sherpi group
- The southern K12 sector
Historic maps sometimes used different names, elevations, or summit divisions. The table below therefore distinguishes independent mountains from subsidiary summits wherever the available topographic information allows.

Elevations for Saltoro Kangri II, Ghent Kangri, Sherpi Kangri, and Mount Depak differ among historical maps. Saltoro Kangri and K12 have the clearest modern elevation and prominence data, while several lesser-known points remain difficult to classify precisely.
Saltoro Kangri I
Saltoro Kangri is the highest mountain in the Saltoro Mountains.
It reaches:
- 7,742 metres
- 25,400 feet
Its approximately 2,160 metres of prominence make it an ultra-prominent mountain and the dominant summit of the range.
The mountain was historically known as Peak 36 and is also associated with the Karakoram survey designation K10.
Yasuo Takamura, Atsuo Saito, and R. A. Bashir completed the first ascent on July 24, 1962, during a joint Japanese–Pakistani expedition led by Professor T. Shidei. The expedition climbed from the western glacier system and followed a route influenced by the British reconnaissance of 1935.
Saltoro Kangri II
Saltoro Kangri II is the second-highest point of the Saltoro Kangri massif.
It reaches approximately 7,705 metres, making it higher than K12. However, its low prominence connects it closely to Saltoro Kangri I, so it is normally classified as a subsidiary summit rather than an independent mountain.
Its ascent history remains uncertain.
