India contains one of the most varied mountain landscapes of any country in the world.

Along its northern frontier rise the Himalayas and Karakoram, where snow-covered summits exceed 7,000 and 8,000 metres. In the northeast, high ridges curve southward through Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and adjoining border regions.

Farther south, the landscape changes completely.

The Indian peninsula contains ancient, deeply eroded mountain systems such as the Aravalli Range, Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, Vindhya Range, and Satpura Range. These mountains are much lower than the Himalayas but remain enormously important for biodiversity, rivers, monsoon rainfall, agriculture, wildlife, and human settlement.

The highest mountain associated directly with India is Khangchendzonga, also spelled Kangchenjunga or Kanchenjunga. It rises to 8,586 metres (28,169 feet) on the border between Sikkim and Nepal and is the third-highest mountain in the world.

The highest mountain located entirely within India is Nanda Devi, which rises to approximately 7,816 metres (25,643 feet) in Uttarakhand.

India’s highest mountain outside the Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan systems is Anamudi, a 2,695-metre summit in Kerala’s Western Ghats.

Why India has so many different mountain landscapes

India lies at the meeting point of several major geological and climatic regions.

The Himalayas developed through the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. They are comparatively young, steep, tectonically active mountains that continue to experience uplift, earthquakes, landslides, erosion, and glacier movement.

The mountains of Peninsular India are much older. They have been worn down over immense spans of time and now appear as:

  • Rounded ranges
  • Plateau edges
  • Forested escarpments
  • Isolated massifs
  • Rocky ridges
  • Discontinuous hill systems

India’s tropical position and seasonal monsoon add another layer of variety.

A high Himalayan valley in Ladakh may receive little precipitation and resemble a cold desert. A mountain of the Western Ghats at a much lower elevation may receive intense monsoon rain and support dense evergreen forest.

Elevation alone therefore does not explain India’s mountain environments. Latitude, rainfall, geology, slope direction, distance from the sea, and regional climate are equally important.

The mountains influence nearly every major aspect of India’s physical geography.

The Government of India’s Himalayan research institutions describe the Indian Himalayan Region as a vast environmental system extending across northern and northeastern states and union territories. The administrative definition is broader than the Himalayas in the strict geological sense and includes several northeastern hill systems connected with the Himalayan environment.

Is Mount Everest in India?

No.

Mount Everest lies on the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. It is not located in India.

The highest mountain associated with India is Khangchendzonga, which stands on the Sikkim–Nepal border.

Is K2 in India?

K2 lies on the Pakistan–China border in an area administered by Pakistan as part of Gilgit-Baltistan.

India claims the wider former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, but K2 is not under Indian administration and is not normally included in practical lists of mountains currently governed by India.

Similar care is required when describing mountains of the Saltoro and Siachen region, where territorial claims and present military control remain disputed.

Kangchenjunga, India

India’s mountain regions can be divided into several broad geographical zones.

Northern and northwestern India

The mountains of northern and northwestern India include:

Within India, the main Himalayan mountain belt extends through:

Not every one of these belongs to the Great Himalaya in the narrowest geological sense. Saltoro Kangri and Saser Kangri, for example, belong to Karakoram subranges and are better described as Trans-Himalayan.

Khangchendzonga

Khangchendzonga rises to 8,586 metres on the border between Sikkim and Nepal.

It is:

  • India’s highest associated mountain
  • Nepal’s second-highest mountain
  • The world’s third-highest summit
  • The central peak of an enormous glaciated massif
  • A sacred mountain in Sikkimese traditions

The massif contains several major summits and extensive glacier systems.

UNESCO describes Khangchendzonga National Park as having a vertical range of more than seven kilometres, from subtropical environments to the 8,586-metre summit. The mountain stands along the park’s western boundary and is surrounded by numerous other peaks above 6,000 metres.

Nanda Devi

Nanda Devi rises to approximately 7,816 metres in Uttarakhand.

It is the highest summit located entirely within India.

The mountain stands inside a great ring of peaks known as the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Access to the inner sanctuary is protected by steep ridges and the Rishi Ganga gorge.

Nanda Devi is:

  • India’s second-highest mountain
  • The highest entirely within the country
  • One of the world’s most prominent peaks
  • A sacred mountain in Uttarakhand
  • The central landmark of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape

UNESCO uses an elevation of 7,817 metres in some records, while many modern mountain references use 7,816 metres. The one-metre variation reflects differences in rounding and source data rather than a meaningful disagreement over the mountain’s identity.

The Lesser Himalaya

The Lesser Himalaya, also known as the Himachal or Middle Himalaya, lies south of the main high Himalayan crest.

Its ranges include:

  • Numerous regional ridges in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand

Elevations are generally lower than in the Greater Himalaya, but the terrain remains steep and mountainous.

Kashmir Himalaya

The Kashmir mountain region includes:

The Ladakh Range

They extend for roughly 1,600 kilometres and strongly influence the Indian monsoon.

Moist air arriving from the Arabian Sea rises over the western slopes, producing heavy rainfall. The eastern side often receives less moisture and grades into the Deccan Plateau.

The Western Ghats are older than the Himalayas and are internationally important for biodiversity. UNESCO recognizes their role in monsoon processes and their exceptional concentration of threatened and endemic species.

Deomali rises to 1,672 metres in Odisha’s Koraput district.

It is Odisha’s highest mountain and one of the highest major summits of the Eastern Ghats.

The mountain is known for broad grass-covered slopes, forest, mist, and panoramic views.

🪨 The Aravalli Range

The Aravalli Range is one of India’s oldest mountain systems.

It runs generally southwest to northeast through:

  • Gujarat
  • Rajasthan
  • Haryana
  • The Delhi region

The range is heavily eroded and broken into ridges, rocky hills, plateaus, valleys, and isolated outcrops.

It does not resemble the high, continuous crest of the Himalayas.

Guru Shikhar

Guru Shikhar is the highest summit of the Aravalli Range.

It rises to approximately 1,722 metres near Mount Abu in Rajasthan.

The Aravallis form an important climatic and geographical divide within Rajasthan. Land west of the range becomes increasingly dry toward the Thar Desert, while many areas to the east and southeast are more fertile and better watered.

Why the Aravallis matter

The range:

  • Influences desert expansion and regional drainage
  • Supports dry forests and wildlife
  • Contains important mineral deposits
  • Includes sacred hills and historic forts
  • Provides groundwater-recharge zones
  • Extends into rapidly developing urban regions

Mining, quarrying, construction, deforestation, and fragmentation have placed severe pressure on parts of the range.

🪨 The Vindhya Range

The Vindhya Range is a complex system of plateaus, escarpments, ridges, and hills in central India.

It lies mainly north of the Narmada Valley and extends through parts of:

  • Uttar Pradesh

  • Gujarat
  • Bihar under broader historical definitions

The Vindhyas are not one narrow, continuous alpine chain.

Their identity has changed over time, and older geographical traditions sometimes used “Vindhya” for a much larger region than modern maps do.

Sadbhavna Shikhar

The highest recognized point of the modern Vindhya Range is Sadbhavna Shikhar, also known as Goodwill Peak or Kalumar Peak.

It rises to approximately 752 metres near Singrampur in Damoh district, Madhya Pradesh.

The mountain is modest in elevation but geographically important because it represents the range’s accepted high point.

The Satpura Range lies mainly south of the Narmada Valley.

Dhupgarh

Dhupgarh, also spelled Dhoopgarh, is the highest point of the Satpura Range.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism identifies Dhupgarh as the range’s highest point and promotes it as a major sunrise and sunset viewpoint.

Vindhya versus Satpura

The Vindhya and Satpura ranges are often confused.

A simple geographical distinction is:

  • Vindhya Range: mainly north of the Narmada Valley
  • Satpura Range: mainly south of the Narmada Valley

The Narmada flows westward between the two systems through a major structural valley.

🌿 The Nilgiri, Anaimalai, Palani and Cardamom Hills

The highlands of southern India contain several named mountain groups connected with the Western Ghats.

Nilgiri Hills

The Nilgiri Hills rise near the meeting region of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.

Palani Hills

The Palani Hills lie primarily in Tamil Nadu.

Cardamom Hills

The boundaries between the Anaimalai, Palani, and Cardamom hills vary among maps.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands contain the exposed tops of submarine ridges and volcanic systems.

Saddle Peak

India’s mountain geography does not fit perfectly into a simple list.

Ranges overlap

The Himalaya, Karakoram, Ladakh, Zanskar, and Trans-Himalayan systems meet in complicated highland regions.

A mountain may be assigned differently depending on whether the source emphasizes geology, drainage, local naming, or political geography.

Old names cover broader areas

Names such as Vindhya, Himalaya, and Eastern Ghats have sometimes been used historically for larger areas than modern maps recognize.

Hill groups may be subranges

The Nilgiri, Anaimalai, Palani, and Cardamom hills may be treated as:

  • Separate ranges
  • Subranges of the Western Ghats
  • Parts of one connected southern highland system

Political borders cross summits

Khangchendzonga lies on the India–Nepal border.

Many northern peaks lie along the borders with China, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, or Myanmar.

Other mountains occupy disputed territory or areas where claims differ from present administrative control.

Elevations change between sources

Small differences may result from:

  • Survey revisions
  • GPS measurements
  • Digital elevation models
  • Rounding
  • Confusion between neighboring summits

A one- or two-metre variation does not always indicate a serious error. Larger discrepancies require closer investigation.

🏔️ Highest Mountains in India

Ranking India’s highest mountains is more complicated than arranging elevations from largest to smallest.

A list may include:

  • Mountains entirely within India
  • Summits on the India–Nepal border
  • Summits on the India–China border
  • Peaks at international tripoints
  • Mountains in the disputed Saltoro–Siachen region
  • Subsidiary summits with very little prominence
  • Mountains claimed by India but administered by another country

These categories should not be combined without explanation.

For this guide, a mountain is treated as an independent summit when it has at least approximately 500 metres of topographic prominence. This removes minor bumps and closely connected subsidiary summits from the main ranking.

The list uses independent peaks rather than counting every high point of the Khangchendzonga, Saser Kangri, Saltoro Kangri, or other multi-summit massifs. Elevations and prominence-based rankings can vary slightly between datasets.

Why Khangchendzonga is India’s highest mountain

Khangchendzonga rises to 8,586 metres on the western boundary of Sikkim.

Its summit stands on the international border with Nepal, so the mountain is shared rather than located wholly inside India. It is nevertheless recognized by the Survey of India and UNESCO as India’s highest peak and is the third-highest mountain on Earth.

The main summit is only one part of a huge massif containing several exceptionally high subsidiary summits:

  • Yalung Kang
  • Khangchendzonga South
  • Khangchendzonga Central
  • Kangbachen
  • Other high ridges and pinnacles

These should not be counted as separate independent mountains merely because they exceed 8,000 metres or appear individually on a map. Their low prominence connects them closely to the main summit.

Highest mountain entirely within India

Nanda Devi is the highest mountain located wholly within India.

It rises to approximately 7,816 metres in Uttarakhand, surrounded by the natural mountain fortress of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.

Some official documents give 7,817 or 7,819 metres. These small differences result from map editions, survey data, or rounding rather than uncertainty over the identity of the peak.

Nanda Devi has more than 3,100 metres of prominence, making it one of the most topographically dominant mountains in Asia. UNESCO describes the surrounding national park as an exceptional high-altitude wilderness approached through the deeply cut Rishi Ganga gorge.

Kamet

Kamet rises to 7,756 metres in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand.

It is India’s third-highest independent summit when disputed Saltoro peaks and shared border mountains are classified separately.

Kamet stands near the Tibetan frontier in a high mountain group that also contains:

  • Abi Gamin
  • Mana
  • Mukut Parbat
  • Several high subsidiary summits

Abi Gamin is sometimes included in lists of India’s highest mountains because it reaches about 7,355 metres. Its prominence is only approximately 217 metres, however, so it is normally regarded as a subsidiary summit rather than a separate major mountain.

Saltoro Kangri

Saltoro Kangri rises to 7,742 metres in the Saltoro Mountains west of the Siachen Glacier.

It is frequently listed as India’s fourth-highest mountain. That statement requires a territorial qualification because the summit lies within the disputed Saltoro–Siachen region and is listed by topographic databases under both India and Pakistan.

Saltoro Kangri remains geographically important regardless of the political category used. It is the highest mountain in the Saltoro Mountains and has approximately 2,160 metres of prominence.

Saser Kangri I

Saser Kangri I reaches 7,672 metres in the Saser Muztagh of Ladakh.

It has approximately 2,304 metres of prominence, making it an ultra-prominent mountain and the dominant summit of the Saser group.

Unlike Saltoro Kangri, Saser Kangri I lies within Indian-administered territory away from the principal India–Pakistan control line. It is therefore sometimes used as Ladakh’s highest clearly undisputed mountain.

Mamostong Kangri

Mamostong Kangri reaches 7,516 metres in the remote Rimo Muztagh or eastern Karakoram region of Ladakh.

It has approximately 1,803 metres of prominence, qualifying it as an ultra-prominent peak.

The mountain stands near important historic caravan and glacier routes north of the Nubra Valley. Its remoteness, military sensitivity, long glacier approaches, and extreme conditions have kept its climbing history very limited.

The Saser Kangri summits

The Saser Kangri massif contains several important summits:

  • Saser Kangri I — 7,672 m
  • Saser Kangri II East — 7,513 m
  • Saser Kangri II West — approximately 7,511 m
  • Saser Kangri III — 7,495 m
  • Saser Kangri IV — approximately 7,415 m

Not all should be treated equally.

Saser Kangri II East has approximately 1,450 metres of prominence and is a major independent peak under a 500-metre definition. Saser Kangri II West and Saser Kangri IV are subsidiary summits with much lower prominence.

This distinction prevents a ranked table from being dominated by several points on the same massif.

K12

K12 rises to 7,428 metres in the Saltoro Mountains.

It is the second-highest independent mountain of that subrange after Saltoro Kangri. Its prominence of approximately 1,978 metres makes it an ultra.

Like Saltoro Kangri, K12 stands in disputed and militarily restricted terrain. It should not be presented simply as an ordinary mountain of one country without explaining the regional political geography.

Jongsong Peak

Jongsong Peak rises near the meeting point of India, Nepal, and China.

Modern topographic data places it near 7,420 metres, although older publications often use 7,462 metres.

The summit belongs to the wider Khangchendzonga mountain region and is a substantial independent peak with more than 1,200 metres of prominence.

Its tripoint location makes a simple one-country classification misleading.

Other major summits below 7,400 metres

India contains many additional independent mountains between 7,000 and 7,400 metres, including:

  • Rimo I — 7,385 m
  • Kirat Chuli — 7,365 m
  • Chaukhamba I — 7,138 m
  • Nun — 7,135 m
  • Trisul I — 7,120 m
  • Dunagiri — approximately 7,066 m
  • Kangto — approximately 7,060–7,090 m
  • Satopanth — approximately 7,075 m
  • Hardeol — approximately 7,151 m

Chaukhamba I, Nun, and Trisul each have more than 1,500 metres of prominence, making them ultras despite being lower than the better-known Karakoram giants.

Well-known entries such as Khangchendzonga, Nanda Devi, Anamudi, Guru Shikhar, and Kalsubai are firmly established. The table should be treated as a geographic reference rather than a legally definitive list. The lower entries are particularly sensitive to map resolution, administrative boundaries, and whether the highest natural ground or highest named summit is being measured.

Why state high-point lists disagree

Differences arise for several reasons.

A higher unnamed ridge may exist

A famous named mountain may not be the highest natural ground within a state.

This issue appears in Gujarat, where Girnar is widely described as the state’s highest mountain, while some topographic datasets identify higher terrain near the Maharashtra border.

A summit may lie directly on a border

Khangchendzonga, Sandakphu, Reo Purgyil, Saramati, and Kangto are border high points.

The precise highest location may fall on one side of a mapped line, directly on it, or within terrain where the international boundary is disputed.

Administrative boundaries change

The creation of Ladakh as a separate union territory changed the high-point lists for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Similar boundary revisions can change which mountain belongs to which state or district.

One mountain may have several names

Tenipu and Mount Iso, Arma Konda and Jindhagada Peak, and Betalongchhip and Betlingchhip illustrate how spelling or naming differences can appear to describe separate summits.

Elevations may come from different technologies

Figures may be based on:

  • Nineteenth-century triangulation
  • Survey of India maps
  • Barometric measurements
  • Satellite radar
  • Digital elevation models
  • Modern GNSS or GPS surveys

Small discrepancies are normal. Large ones require checking the exact summit coordinates.

🪨 Geology of India’s Mountains

India’s mountains were not all created by the same process.

The country contains:

  • Young collision mountains
  • Ancient folded and metamorphic belts
  • Rift-related escarpments
  • Volcanic plateaus
  • Erosion-shaped residual hills
  • Oceanic island-arc mountains

Understanding these differences explains why the Himalayas look so unlike the Western Ghats or Aravallis.

Formation of the Himalayas

The Himalayas formed as the northward-moving Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate.

The collision closed the ancient Neo-Tethys Ocean and compressed, folded, faulted, and thickened the crust. Parts of the Indian Plate continue to move beneath the Himalayan mountain wedge, storing strain that is periodically released through earthquakes.

The range remains geologically active rather than being a completed or inactive landform.

The Himalayan thrust belts

The Indian Himalaya contains several major tectonic zones separated by large fault and thrust systems.

From south to north, these broadly include:

  • Himalayan Frontal zone
  • Shivalik or Sub-Himalaya
  • Lesser Himalaya
  • Greater Himalayan crystalline rocks
  • Tethyan Himalayan sedimentary zone

These categories simplify a very complex mountain system, but they help explain differences in rock, elevation, slope stability, and landscape.

Shivalik sediments

The Shivalik Hills are built largely from sand, gravel, clay, and other material eroded from the rising Himalayas.

These sediments were deposited by ancient rivers along the mountain front and later uplifted and folded.

Because much of the material is weakly consolidated, Shivalik slopes can be highly vulnerable to:

  • Gully erosion
  • Landslides
  • Flash flooding
  • Road damage
  • Rapid changes in stream channels

Lesser Himalayan rocks

The Lesser Himalaya contains ancient sedimentary and metamorphic formations that have been folded and faulted repeatedly.

The terrain commonly includes steep forested ridges, deep valleys, river gorges, and heavily settled mountain slopes.

Construction can be especially difficult where roads cut across fractured rock or old landslide deposits.

Greater Himalayan crystalline rocks

Many of the highest Himalayan ranges contain strongly metamorphosed rocks and granitic intrusions.

These include varieties of:

  • Marble
  • Granite and leucogranite

The exact rock composition changes from one mountain group to another.

The high summits are not made from a single uniform “Himalayan rock.”

Karakoram geology

Why the Karakoram is so steep

The Karakoram combines high uplift rates, resistant rock, deep river incision, and extensive glaciation.

Glaciers have cut into the mountain mass from multiple directions, leaving:

  • Sharp arêtes
  • Granite towers
  • Deep cirques
  • Hanging valleys
  • Enormous rock walls
  • Narrow ice-covered ridges

The terrain can be exceptionally steep even where two neighboring summits are connected by a very high saddle.

Peninsular India’s ancient foundation

The mountains of Peninsular India are much older than the Himalayas.

They occupy parts of the Indian continental shield, whose rocks include ancient:

  • Granite
  • Gneiss
  • Schist
  • Quartzite
  • Basalt
  • Charnockite
  • Sedimentary formations

Many peninsular mountains are remnants of older landscapes that have been uplifted, faulted, weathered, and eroded over immense periods.

They generally lack the permanent glaciers, extreme elevation, and active crustal compression of the Himalayas.

The Aravalli Range

The Aravallis represent the remains of an extremely old mountain-building system.

Erosion has reduced the original mountains to discontinuous ridges, rocky hills, and isolated highlands.

The range contains highly altered rocks and important mineral belts. Its age and long erosion history explain why it is far lower and more broken than the Himalayas.

Vindhya geology

The Vindhya Range is associated largely with ancient sedimentary rocks deposited in the Vindhyan basin.

These formations include:

  • Sandstone
  • Shale
  • Limestone

Erosion of differently resistant layers has produced plateaus, escarpments, cliffs, valleys, and isolated ridges.

Satpura geology

The Satpura Range occupies a complex central Indian structural region.

Its landscapes include faulted uplands, sedimentary rocks, volcanic formations, and deeply weathered plateaus.

The Narmada Valley to the north follows a major structural zone separating much of the Satpura system from the Vindhyas.

Western Ghats and the Deccan Plateau

The Western Ghats are primarily a great escarpment along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau rather than a young folded mountain chain.

In Maharashtra, many of the range’s dramatic cliffs and flat-topped hills are formed from layers of Deccan basalt, created by enormous volcanic eruptions near the end of the Cretaceous Period.

Farther south, the mountains contain older crystalline rocks such as:

The Western Ghats are older than the Himalayas and have been shaped by uplift, faulting, river erosion, tropical weathering, and retreat of the escarpment.

Eastern Ghats geology

The Eastern Ghats contain ancient metamorphic and igneous rocks.

They are older, lower, and more discontinuous than the Western Ghats. Long erosion and the passage of major rivers have divided them into separate hill systems.

The modern highest-point question—Arma Konda or Jindhagada Peak—reflects both difficult mapping and the fragmented nature of the range.

Andaman and Nicobar island arc

The Andaman and Nicobar mountain chain is the exposed portion of an oceanic island arc.

It is related to the subduction zone where the Indian Plate descends beneath the Burma or Sunda plate system.

India’s largest glacier systems occur in the Karakoram and Himalayas.

The wider Indian Himalayan Region contains thousands of glaciers and extensive permanent snow. Government-supported Himalayan research describes the region as a reservoir of more than 9,000 glaciers feeding the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra river systems.

What is a glacier?

A glacier forms where snow accumulates over many years, compresses into ice, and begins moving under its own weight.

Glaciers are not stationary blocks.

They:

  • Flow downhill
  • Open and close crevasses
  • Transport rock
  • Carve valleys
  • Build moraines
  • Feed rivers
  • Advance or retreat as conditions change

A glacier may continue moving even while its end is retreating.

Siachen Glacier

The Siachen Glacier lies in the eastern Karakoram.

It is surrounded by the Saltoro Mountains to the west and other high Karakoram groups to the north and east.

Its tributary glaciers drain mountains including:

  • Saltoro Kangri
  • K12
  • Teram Kangri
  • Apsarasas Kangri
  • Other eastern Karakoram peaks

The glacier lies within an intensely restricted military region. A regulated visit to the lower Siachen Base Camp does not provide civilian access to the upper glacier or its surrounding summits.

Gangotri Glacier

The Gangotri Glacier is one of Uttarakhand’s best-known glaciers.

Its meltwater forms the Bhagirathi River, one of the principal headstreams of the Ganges.

The visible glacier snout is known as Gaumukh, meaning cow’s mouth.

Gangotri is not the sole source of all Ganges water. The river system also depends on:

  • Tributary glaciers
  • Springs
  • Groundwater
  • Numerous mountain streams

Bhagirath Kharak and Satopanth glaciers

The Bhagirath Kharak and Satopanth glaciers feed the Alaknanda system near Badrinath.

The Alaknanda joins the Bhagirathi at Devprayag, after which the river is known as the Ganges.

These glaciers lie beneath high peaks of the Garhwal Himalaya and are surrounded by avalanche, rockfall, and glacial-lake hazards.

Pindari Glacier

The Pindari Glacier lies in the Kumaon Himalaya.

It feeds the Pindar River, which joins the Alaknanda at Karnaprayag.

Its historic trekking approach has made it one of India’s better-known glaciers, although road, bridge, and trail conditions may change following monsoon damage.

Milam Glacier

The Milam Glacier lies in the Johar Valley of eastern Uttarakhand.

It drains part of the high mountain region close to the Nepal and China borders and contributes water to the Gori Ganga.

The historic route passes villages once linked to trans-Himalayan trade.

Bara Shigri Glacier

Bara Shigri is one of the major glaciers of Himachal Pradesh.

It lies in the Chandra Valley of Lahaul and contributes meltwater to the Chandra River, which later joins the Bhaga to form the Chenab.

The surrounding landscape lies within a rain-shadow region where glacier and snowmelt are especially important.

Drang-Drung Glacier

The Drang-Drung Glacier lies near Pensi La in the Zanskar region.

It feeds streams belonging to the Doda or Stod River system.

The glacier is visible from the pass area, but reaching the ice itself involves unstable moraine and should not be treated as an ordinary roadside walk.

Zemu Glacier

The Zemu Glacier lies beneath the eastern side of the Khangchendzonga massif in Sikkim.

UNESCO identifies it as one of the largest glaciers in Asia and records eighteen glaciers and numerous glacial lakes within Khangchendzonga National Park.

Glacial lakes

Glacial lakes may form:

  • In depressions left by retreating ice
  • Behind moraines
  • Beside glaciers
  • On the glacier surface
  • In ice-dammed valleys

Some remain stable for long periods. Others may drain suddenly if an ice or moraine dam fails.

A glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF, can release a destructive surge of water, rock, ice, and sediment into downstream valleys.

The Indian Himalayan Region is exposed to GLOFs, avalanches, floods, landslides, and earthquakes.

Are all Himalayan rivers glacier-fed?

No.

Glaciers are important, particularly in high-altitude headwaters, but river flow also comes from:

The relative importance of each source changes between river basins and seasons.

🌊 Mountain Rivers of India

India’s mountains act as water towers for much of South Asia.

The Indus system

The Indus rises outside India in the Tibetan region before flowing through Ladakh and onward into territory administered by Pakistan.

Yamuna

Brahmaputra and Siang

The Yarlung Tsangpo flows across Tibet before curving around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis.

It enters India in Arunachal Pradesh, where it is known as the Siang or Dihang.

After joining rivers including the Dibang and Lohit, it becomes the Brahmaputra across Assam.

The river cuts through exceptionally steep mountain terrain before entering the broad Assam Valley.

Teesta

The Teesta drains much of Sikkim and parts of northern West Bengal.

Its headwaters are supplied by:

Both reach the Arabian Sea.

Rivers of the Western Ghats

The Western Ghats form the principal watershed of Peninsular India.

Major east-flowing rivers with headwaters in or near the range include:

Numerous shorter rivers descend steeply westward to the Arabian Sea.

Rainfall is not uniform.

The eastern Himalaya generally receives much more monsoon moisture than the northwestern Trans-Himalaya.

Eastern Himalaya

Sikkim, northern West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh receive heavy summer rainfall.

Steep slopes, intense rain, river incision, earthquakes, and road construction combine to create high landslide risk.

Cloud and mist may obscure mountains for long periods during the wettest months.

Meghalaya escarpment

Moist air from the Bay of Bengal rises sharply against the southern edge of the Meghalaya Plateau.

🐾 Mountain Wildlife

India’s mountains support animals adapted to environments ranging from tropical rainforest to permanent snow.

No species occurs throughout all mountain regions.

Snow leopard

Snow leopards occupy high rocky terrain across parts of:

They are secretive and occur at low population densities.

Tracks, camera traps, and prey remains are usually more common than direct sightings.

Nanda Devi National Park protects significant bharal habitat within the inner Himalayan sanctuary.

Himalayan tahr

Himalayan tahr inhabit steep forest and alpine terrain in parts of the central and western Himalaya.

Their powerful build and specialized hooves allow them to move across rocky slopes.

They should not be confused with the Nilgiri tahr, a separate species of the southern Western Ghats.

Musk deer

Himalayan musk deer occupy forest and subalpine habitat.

Males possess scent glands historically targeted in illegal wildlife trade.

Several species or regional forms occur across India’s Himalayan states.

Red panda

Red pandas inhabit cool temperate forests with dense bamboo in the eastern Himalaya.

Within India, their range includes parts of:

Himalayan brown and black bears

The Himalayan brown bear is associated mainly with high, open mountain terrain in the northwest.

Himalayan monal

The Himalayan monal is a brightly colored pheasant associated with forest and alpine-edge habitat.

It occurs across parts of the western and central Himalaya and is the state bird of Uttarakhand.

Western Ghats mammals

The Western Ghats support wildlife including:

Nilgiri tahr

The Nilgiri tahr lives in the high grasslands and rocky escarpments of the southern Western Ghats.

It is not closely related to the Himalayan tahr despite the similar common name.

Northeastern mountain wildlife

The forests of Arunachal Pradesh and Northeast India support animals with Himalayan, Indian, and Southeast Asian affinities.

A mountain does not contain one uniform ecosystem from base to summit.

A journey upward may pass through:

Do not choose an Indian mountain destination by elevation alone. A 3,000-metre trek in wet Arunachal Pradesh may involve denser forest, heavier rain, river crossings, and fewer established trails than a much higher route in Ladakh. Check the exact state, season, border status, protected-area rules, permit requirements, altitude profile, and current road conditions before planning the journey.

🥾 Hiking & Trekking in India

India offers mountain journeys ranging from short forest walks and hill-fort climbs to multiweek expeditions across glaciers and passes above 5,000 metres.

The word trek can describe very different experiences. A marked route through a popular hill station is not comparable with a remote journey through Ladakh, an expedition-style glacier trek in Uttarakhand, or an exploratory route in Arunachal Pradesh.

Ladakh and Zanskar

Ladakh offers some of India’s best-known high-altitude trekking.

The landscape differs dramatically from the monsoon-facing Himalaya. Much of it consists of dry valleys, barren slopes, deeply cut river gorges, Buddhist monasteries, irrigated villages, and passes above 4,500 or 5,000 metres.

The Markha Valley Trek is among the best-known routes. It passes through villages and high desert within the wider Hemis National Park landscape. The exact itinerary varies as roads and accommodation develop, so older route descriptions may no longer match current walking stages.

Trekkers should acclimatize before beginning strenuous activity. Arriving by air in Leh places a traveler immediately at considerable elevation, and feeling well during the first few hours does not prove that acclimatization is complete.

Hampta Pass

Hampta Pass connects the greener Kullu side of the mountains with the drier Lahaul landscape.

Its popularity should not lead visitors to underestimate it. Snow, river crossings, rapid weather changes, altitude, and crowding at camps can still create problems.

Pin Parvati Pass

Pin Parvati Pass is a substantially more serious undertaking.

Himachal Tourism classifies the crossing as very difficult. The route involves a high pass, remote valleys, changing trail conditions, and potentially dangerous snow and river crossings. It is not a suitable first trek. (himachaltourism.gov.in)

Great Himalayan National Park

The Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area protects upper catchments, alpine meadows, forests, and high peaks in Himachal Pradesh.

Unlike a trek built around reaching one famous viewpoint, journeys here often emphasize wilderness, wildlife habitat, and river valleys. UNESCO recognizes the area for its globally important Western Himalayan forests and threatened species. (whc.unesco.org)

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand combines some of India’s best-known mountain treks with sacred river headwaters and pilgrimage routes.

Valley of Flowers

The Valley of Flowers route begins from the Govindghat area and continues through Ghangaria.

The valley is unusual because the best period for viewing its alpine flowers falls partly within the monsoon season. Visitors may therefore encounter rain, mud, cloud, landslides, swollen streams, and transportation delays.

UNESCO describes the Valley of Flowers as an internationally important high-altitude landscape with diverse alpine flora, complementing the much more rugged and inaccessible wilderness of Nanda Devi National Park. (whc.unesco.org)

Pindari, Kafni and Sunderdhunga

These glacier and valley routes enter the Kumaon Himalaya from the Bageshwar region.

The landscape includes:

Roads, bridges, and trails can be damaged during the monsoon. A guidebook’s distances may remain correct while the practical route has changed completely.

Kedartal

Kedartal lies above the Gangotri Valley beneath high peaks including Thalay Sagar.
