🪨 Geology
Mount Abbot lies within a classic section of the central Sierra Nevada, where the exposed landscape records a long history of magma formation, uplift, erosion, and glaciation.
Much of the Sierra Nevada is underlain by the Sierra Nevada batholith, a vast assemblage of intrusive igneous rocks that formed when magma cooled beneath the surface during the Mesozoic Era. Later uplift and erosion stripped away overlying material and exposed the resistant granitic rocks that now form many of the range’s celebrated cliffs and peaks.
The U.S. Geological Survey mapped the Mount Abbot quadrangle in detail. The quadrangle covers roughly 240 square miles of high montane and alpine terrain straddling the Sierra crest between the Fresno region and Bishop.
