Greenland is often imagined as an immense expanse of ice, but its coastline is framed by some of the Arctic’s most dramatic mountain landscapes. Greenland is the world’s largest island, covering approximately 2.17 million square kilometers. Around four-fifths of its surface is covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet, leaving most ice-free land concentrated along the coastline.

The island’s mountainous terrain is therefore arranged primarily around its outer margins. Mountain chains, high plateaus, nunataks, and deeply carved fjord systems form a rugged ring around the ice-covered interior.

Schweizerland

Schweizerland is a heavily glaciated mountain region west of the Ammassalik area in southeastern Greenland. The name means “Swiss Land,” reflecting the early European explorers’ comparison of its sharp peaks and glaciers with the Swiss Alps.

Mont Forel is generally regarded as the highest summit in Schweizerland, reaching approximately 3,383 meters, although published elevations vary. The region contains many granite and metamorphic peaks separated by broad glaciers.

Schweizerland is more accessible than the Watkins Range, but it remains a serious expedition destination. Approaches commonly begin around Kulusuk or Tasiilaq and continue by boat, helicopter, ski, or a combination of these methods.
