
The Rwenzori Mountains are one of Africa’s most extraordinary mountain ranges, rising along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Rwenzori Mountains extend for roughly 120 kilometers (75 miles) from north to south and reach about 65 kilometers (40 miles) across at their widest point. They rise dramatically above the Albertine Rift, with their highest summits standing almost 4,000 meters above the surrounding rift valleys.
The range contains six famous major massifs:

Several additional high summits and ridges add to the exceptionally complicated topography.

The Rwenzori Mountains rise almost directly on the equator along the Uganda–Democratic Republic of the Congo border.
On the Ugandan side, the mountains are reached primarily through western Uganda, particularly around Kasese and Kilembe. The high central massifs lie west of Kasese and rise abruptly above the lower Albertine Rift landscape.
The range stands between some of Africa’s great rift lakes, including Lake Albert to the north and Lake Edward to the south.

🪨 Geology
The geology of the Rwenzori Mountains is one of their most important distinguishing features.
These mountains are not volcanoes.
Instead, the Rwenzoris form an enormous uplifted block of crust within the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift System. Geological studies describe the range as an uplifted basement fault block bounded by major fault systems.
The underlying rocks include ancient crystalline materials such as:
- Gneiss
- Amphibolite
- Granite
- Quartzite
- Other metamorphic rocks
These rocks are vastly older than the mountains’ present relief.
Major uplift occurred comparatively recently in geological terms as fault movements raised the Rwenzori block above the surrounding rift valleys.
Rivers, mass wasting, weathering, and repeated periods of glaciation subsequently carved this elevated block into the sharp ridges, cirques, deep valleys, cliffs, and rock basins visible today.
This geological history makes the Rwenzoris fundamentally different from nearby volcanic mountains such as Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Mount Elgon, and the Virunga volcanoes.
🧊 Glaciers of the Rwenzori Mountains
The Rwenzori Mountains are famous for containing glacier ice almost directly on the equator.
Early photographs from the beginning of the 20th century show considerably larger glaciers covering portions of several massifs.
Those glaciers have since undergone dramatic retreat.
A 2024 remote-sensing study estimated that approximately 0.38 square kilometers of glacier area remained across the Rwenzori Range at the time of its analysis.
Conditions have continued to change rapidly.
Field and mapping work reported in 2025 indicated that Mount Baker is now practically ice-free and Mount Speke no longer supports an active glacier, although patches of static ice have persisted. Significant glacier ice remains on Mount Stanley.
Mapping of the Stanley Plateau Glacier also found that its surface area decreased by approximately 29.5% between 2020 and 2024.
The Rwenzori glaciers are therefore among the clearest visible indicators of environmental change in tropical African high mountains.

Bamboo Zone

The Rwenzori Mountains provide some of the most demanding and rewarding trekking in Africa.
The experience is very different from climbing a broad volcanic cone such as Kilimanjaro. Trekkers frequently encounter deep mud, bogs, slippery roots, steep valleys, rock, rain, and complicated alpine terrain.
Central Circuit
The Central Circuit is the historic trekking route through the central Rwenzori.
It approaches the main massifs through a dramatic landscape of forest, bamboo, bogs, lakes, valleys, and high alpine terrain.
Extensions from the circuit can lead toward Mount Stanley and Margherita Peak.
Kilembe Route

Semuliki National Park lies farther north near the western foot of the rift mountains and protects lowland tropical forest.

🌙 Why Are They Called the “Mountains of the Moon”?
The Rwenzori Mountains have long been associated with the mysterious “Mountains of the Moon” described in ancient geographical traditions.
The Alexandrian geographer Claudius Ptolemy, writing in the second century, described snow-covered mountains near the source regions of the Nile.
Later writers and explorers connected those legendary mountains with the Rwenzoris, although the exact identification of Ptolemy’s ancient geography remains a matter of historical interpretation.
European knowledge of the range became much clearer during the 19th century.

🧗 The 1906 Duke of the Abruzzi Expedition
One of the most important events in Rwenzori mountaineering history occurred in 1906, when Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, led a major expedition into the range.
