The Southern Andes form the final great section of the Andes Mountains, extending through Chile and Argentina from the high, dry mountains near the southern edge of the Central Andes to the storm-battered islands of Tierra del Fuego.

Few mountain regions contain such dramatic contrasts.

In the north, enormous peaks rise above arid valleys and barren plateaus. This is the realm of Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside Asia, and several other summits exceeding 6,000 meters.

Farther south, the mountains become progressively wetter, more volcanic, and more heavily forested. Snow-covered cones rise above deep blue lakes, while ancient glaciers have carved broad valleys through the landscape.

Beyond the Lake District, the Southern Andes enter Patagonia. Here, vast icefields, deeply cut fjords, temperate rainforests, wind-scoured steppes, and vertical granite towers create some of the most recognizable mountain scenery on Earth.

The range finally bends eastward through the islands of Tierra del Fuego before disappearing beneath the waters surrounding the southern tip of South America.

Together, these landscapes make the Southern Andes one of the most geographically varied sections of any major mountain system.

🏔️ Overview

The Southern Andes are the southernmost major division of the Andes, the long mountain chain extending along the western edge of South America.

Definitions vary among geographers, geologists, ecologists, and mountaineers. Some use the term only for the high Andes of central Chile and western Argentina. Others include all of the Andes south of Bolivia, including the Patagonian and Fuegian ranges.

For this guide, the Southern Andes are treated as the broad section beginning near approximately 27° or 28° south latitude and continuing to Tierra del Fuego.

This follows naturally from the geographical division used in the Central Andes guide, which ends near the Ojos del Salado and Nevado Tres Cruces region along the Chile–Argentina border.

Under this broad definition, the Southern Andes include:

  • The dry high Andes of northern and central Chile and western Argentina
  • The mountains surrounding Aconcagua
  • The volcanic Andes of central and southern Chile
  • The lake and forest regions of northern Patagonia
  • The Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields
  • The granite ranges of southern Patagonia
  • The mountains of Tierra del Fuego
  • The Cordillera Darwin

The Patagonian and Fuegian Andes are sometimes treated as separate geographical divisions. In this article, they are considered major subregions within the wider Southern Andes.

📍 Where Are the Southern Andes?

The Southern Andes occupy the western edge of the southern half of South America.

They run along much of the border between Chile and Argentina, forming a vast natural divide between the narrow Pacific-facing lands of Chile and the plains, basins, and plateaus of Argentina.

The Map of the Andes Mountain Range shows how the mountains follow the western side of the continent before curving through Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

The landscape is rarely a single continuous wall. Instead, the region contains parallel ridges, isolated massifs, volcanic chains, high plateaus, broad valleys, glacier-carved basins, and deeply submerged mountain valleys that now form Pacific fjords.

The western side

On the Chilean side, the mountains generally lie close to the Pacific Ocean.

In central Chile, the Andes rise east of the country’s Central Valley. Farther south, the coastline becomes increasingly fragmented, and the mountains descend directly into a labyrinth of:

  • Fjords
  • Channels
  • Islands
  • Glacial valleys
  • Coastal forests
  • Ice-covered plateaus

Many of the channels of southern Chile are drowned mountain valleys that were deepened by glaciers and later flooded by the sea.

The eastern side

The Argentine side generally descends more gradually toward the interior of the continent.

In the northern part of the Southern Andes, high mountain valleys open toward the dry lands of San Juan and Mendoza. Farther south, forested foothills and lake basins eventually give way to the broad Patagonian steppe.

This eastern landscape is often much drier than the Chilean side because the mountains remove much of the moisture carried inland from the Pacific.

The result is one of the world’s most striking mountain contrasts: wet forests and icefields can lie relatively close to dry grasslands and semi-desert plateaus.

🧭 Where Do the Southern Andes Begin?

There is no universally accepted line marking the beginning of the Southern Andes.

A practical boundary lies near 27° or 28° south latitude, close to the great volcanic peaks of the Chilean–Argentine border.

This transitional region includes:

  • Ojos del Salado
  • Nevado Tres Cruces
  • The southern Puna
  • High desert basins
  • Salt flats
  • Large stratovolcanoes
  • Some of the driest high mountains on Earth

These landscapes share many characteristics with the Central Andes. South of this transition, however, the mountain system begins to develop the geographical patterns associated with the Southern Andes.

The range becomes narrower, the Altiplano and Puna gradually disappear, and the mountains increasingly form the principal divide between Chile and Argentina.

Aconcagua lies well south of the main Central Andean plateau region and is generally associated with the Southern Andes, the Dry Andes, or the central Argentina–Chile Andes.

🌊 Where Do the Southern Andes End?

The Southern Andes continue through Patagonia to the Tierra del Fuego archipelago.

In the far south, the direction of the range changes. Instead of continuing almost directly north to south, the mountains curve toward the east.

This bend is part of the broader Patagonian orocline—a major change in the orientation of the southern end of South America.

The final ranges cross Tierra del Fuego, where mountains rise above:

  • The Strait of Magellan
  • The Beagle Channel
  • Subpolar forests
  • Glaciers
  • Islands
  • Stormy coastal waters

The most dramatic southern mountains belong to the Andes of Tierra del Fuego and the remote Cordillera Darwin of Chile.

Beyond these islands, the Andes continue geologically beneath the sea and connect with the complex mountain and island systems surrounding the Scotia Sea.

🇦🇷 The Southern Andes in Argentina

The Argentine Andes extend along the country’s western border from the high desert mountains of the northwest to Tierra del Fuego.

Within the Southern Andes, important Argentine provinces include:

  • San Juan
  • Mendoza
  • Neuquén
  • Río Negro
  • Chubut
  • Santa Cruz
  • Tierra del Fuego

The landscape changes dramatically from north to south.

San Juan and Mendoza

San Juan and Mendoza contain the highest mountains of the Southern Andes.

This region is dry, sparsely vegetated, and dominated by immense massifs, elevated valleys, scree slopes, rock glaciers, and snowfields.

Important peaks include:

  • Aconcagua
  • Cerro Mercedario
  • Tupungato
  • Cerro Ramada
  • Cerro de la Majadita
  • Numerous summits exceeding 6,000 meters

Meltwater from the mountains supports vineyards, orchards, towns, and cities in otherwise arid country.

Neuquén and Río Negro

Farther south, the landscape becomes wetter and more volcanic.

The Argentine Lake District contains forested mountains, large glacial lakes, and volcanoes along the Chilean border. Lanín, Tronador, and other snow-covered mountains dominate landscapes associated with some of Argentina’s best-known national parks.

Cities such as San Martín de los Andes and Bariloche provide access to forests, lakes, hiking routes, ski areas, and mountain passes.

Chubut and Santa Cruz

In Chubut and Santa Cruz, the mountains enter the heart of Patagonia.

The Andes become lower than the great summits of Mendoza, but their steep granite faces, glaciers, severe weather, and remote terrain make them exceptionally dramatic.

The Santa Cruz Andes include:

  • The Southern Patagonian Ice Field
  • Fitz Roy
  • Cerro Torre
  • The Fitz Roy Range
  • Glaciers flowing toward Lakes Viedma and Argentino

The town of El Chaltén has become one of South America’s most important centers for hiking and technical climbing.

Tierra del Fuego

Argentina’s southernmost mountains rise above the Beagle Channel near Ushuaia.

These peaks are lower than those farther north, but their steep relief, maritime weather, glaciers, forests, and proximity to the sea create a distinctly subpolar mountain environment.

🇨🇱 The Southern Andes in Chile

The Andes define the eastern side of Chile for almost the entire length of the country.

The Southern Andes begin near the high desert boundary of northern Chile and continue through central Chile, the Lake District, Patagonia, and the islands of Tierra del Fuego.

Central Chile

Near Santiago, the Andes rise abruptly beyond the Central Valley.

The range includes high peaks, snow-fed river basins, mountain passes, ski areas, and important watersheds. The mountains provide much of the water used by the capital and surrounding agricultural regions.

The Santiago–Mendoza corridor crosses one of the most important transportation routes through the Andes and passes close to the Aconcagua massif.

The volcanic and lake regions

South of central Chile, the range contains an extensive chain of volcanic mountains.

Prominent volcanoes include:

  • Maipo
  • Planchón-Peteroa
  • Descabezado Grande
  • Nevado de Longaví
  • Antuco
  • Llaima
  • Villarrica
  • Lanín
  • Osorno

Forests, lakes, rivers, lava fields, and volcanic cones characterize much of this region.

Several volcanoes remain active, and eruptions have repeatedly altered the landscape, affected settlements, and influenced river systems.

Chilean Patagonia

Farther south, the Andes become increasingly fragmented by glaciers and the sea.

The Chilean side contains:

  • The Northern Patagonian Ice Field
  • Much of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field
  • Deep fjords
  • Large outlet glaciers
  • Mountain archipelagos
  • Isolated valleys
  • Temperate rainforests
  • The Cordillera Paine

The Torres del Paine and surrounding Cordillera Paine are among the most recognizable mountain landscapes in South America.

Magallanes and Tierra del Fuego

The mountains of the Magallanes Region occupy some of the wildest territory in Chile.

Here, the Andes cross a landscape of channels, islands, icecaps, peatlands, forests, and storm-exposed coasts. Access is difficult, and many mountains remain rarely visited.

🗺️ Major Geographical Divisions of the Southern Andes

The Southern Andes should not be imagined as one uniform mountain region.

From north to south, they pass through several major geographical zones.

🏜️ The Dry High Andes

The northern part of the Southern Andes is often called the Dry Andes.

This broad region extends through the high mountains of central western Argentina and adjacent Chile. Its precise boundaries vary, but it includes much of the Andes between the southern edge of the Puna and the beginning of the wetter volcanic and forested regions farther south.

The Dry Andes contain the highest mountains in the Southern Andes.

Common features include:

  • Extremely low precipitation
  • Sparse vegetation
  • Broad high-altitude valleys
  • Steep scree slopes
  • Salt deposits
  • Penitentes
  • Permafrost
  • Rock glaciers
  • Powerful winds
  • Large daily temperature changes

Permanent snow and glaciers are less extensive than their elevations might suggest because the climate is so dry.

Aconcagua dominates the southern part of this high mountain environment.

🏔️ The Aconcagua and Cuyo Andes

Cuyo is a historical and geographical region of western Argentina centered on Mendoza, San Juan, and San Luis.

The high Andes of San Juan and Mendoza contain some of the most imposing non-Himalayan mountains in the world.

The ranges include parts of the:

  • Principal Cordillera
  • Frontal Cordillera
  • Cordillera de la Ramada
  • Cordón del Plata
  • High border cordilleras

The valleys are generally dry, but rivers carrying snowmelt from the mountains support dense settlement and agriculture at lower elevations.

Mendoza’s internationally known wine region depends heavily on water originating in the Andes.

🌋 The Volcanic Andes

South of the highest dry peaks, active and dormant volcanoes become increasingly prominent.

This volcanic belt extends through central and southern Chile and along parts of the Argentine border.

The landscape includes:

  • Stratovolcanoes
  • Crater lakes
  • Lava fields
  • Hot springs
  • Calderas
  • Ash-covered valleys
  • Forested volcanic slopes

Some peaks rise as isolated cones, while others form part of larger volcanic complexes.

Volcanic hazards remain an important part of life in this region. Eruptions can produce lava, ashfall, pyroclastic activity, debris flows, and sudden flooding caused by the melting of snow and ice.

🌲 The Lake District Andes

The Lake District extends across southern Chile and western Argentina.

This is a landscape of:

  • Temperate forests
  • Snow-covered volcanoes
  • Glacial lakes
  • Waterfalls
  • Clear rivers
  • Alpine meadows
  • Deeply carved valleys

The Argentine side includes the lake regions of Neuquén and Río Negro, while the Chilean side extends through Araucanía, Los Ríos, and Los Lagos.

Compared with the Dry Andes, the mountains are lower and much wetter. Dense forests climb the lower slopes, while winter snow supports skiing and mountaineering at higher elevations.

🧊 The Northern Patagonian Andes

The Northern Patagonian Andes begin where the lake and forest regions merge into the more remote landscapes of Aysén and northern Argentine Patagonia.

The mountains become deeply eroded and heavily glaciated.

One of the defining features is the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, a large expanse of mountain ice in southern Chile. Outlet glaciers descend from the icefield into valleys, lakes, and fjords.

Monte San Valentín, one of the highest mountains in Patagonia, rises near this ice-covered region.

The terrain is extremely rugged, and many western valleys remain difficult to reach except by boat, aircraft, or long overland journeys.

🧊 The Southern Patagonian Andes

The Southern Patagonian Andes contain the most famous mountains and glaciers of Patagonia.

Much of the region is shaped by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which lies along the border between Chile and Argentina.

Outlet glaciers flow:

  • Westward into Chilean fjords
  • Eastward toward large Argentine lakes
  • Through valleys cut between granite massifs
  • Around isolated mountain ridges known as nunataks

The region includes some of the most recognizable features described in the Andes of Patagonia:

  • Fitz Roy
  • Cerro Torre
  • Cordón Mariano Moreno
  • Torres del Paine
  • Perito Moreno Glacier
  • Upsala Glacier
  • Viedma Glacier
  • Grey Glacier

Although these peaks are much lower than Aconcagua, their steep walls, heavy glaciation, powerful winds, and severe weather make them major objectives for experienced climbers.

🌊 The Fuegian Andes

The Fuegian Andes occupy the islands south of the Strait of Magellan.

Unlike most of the Andes, which trend generally north to south, these mountains curve eastward across Tierra del Fuego.

Their landscapes include:

  • Sharp ridges
  • Glaciers
  • Subpolar forests
  • Peat bogs
  • Fjords
  • Deep channels
  • Ice-covered massifs

The Cordillera Darwin contains the most remote and heavily glaciated mountains in Tierra del Fuego.

Persistent clouds, strong winds, heavy precipitation, and limited access have historically made exploration difficult. Even today, the range receives far fewer visitors than the better-known mountains of mainland Patagonia.

👑 Aconcagua: The Highest Mountain of the Southern Andes

Aconcagua is the highest mountain in:

  • The Southern Andes
  • The entire Andes
  • South America
  • The Western Hemisphere
  • The Southern Hemisphere
  • The world outside Asia

The mountain rises to approximately 6,961 meters in Argentina’s Mendoza Province, close to the Chilean border.

It belongs to the Principal Cordillera and stands among a group of exceptionally high mountains in the dry Andes.

Aconcagua is also one of the Seven Summits, the highest mountains on the world’s commonly recognized continents.

Although the standard route does not normally require difficult technical climbing, Aconcagua is a serious high-altitude expedition. Extreme cold, strong winds, rapid weather changes, and the effects of altitude present significant risks.

The mountain represents only one side of the Southern Andes.

Aconcagua is immense, high, dry, and comparatively broad. In contrast, the mountains of Patagonia are generally lower but often steeper, wetter, more glaciated, and more technically difficult.

📏 How Elevation Changes from North to South

One of the clearest geographical patterns in the Southern Andes is the general decrease in summit elevation toward the south.

In the dry Andes of Argentina and Chile, several peaks rise above 6,000 meters. Aconcagua approaches 7,000 meters, and Mercedario, Tupungato, and other massifs tower above the surrounding valleys.

In the Lake District, many of the most recognizable mountains range between approximately 2,000 and 4,000 meters.

In Patagonia, relatively few peaks exceed 4,000 meters. Yet the mountains often appear exceptionally imposing because they rise sharply above nearby lakes, glaciers, fjords, and low plains.

Farther south in Tierra del Fuego, summits are lower still, but the snowline descends and glaciers occur at much lower elevations.

Height alone therefore does not determine the character of the Southern Andes.

The north contains the highest summits, while the south contains some of the steepest, iciest, and most visually dramatic landscapes.

🧊 Ice Fields and Glaciers

Glaciers are among the defining features of the southern half of the range.

The two largest concentrations are:

  • The Northern Patagonian Ice Field
  • The Southern Patagonian Ice Field

These icefields are remnants of a much larger mass of ice that covered much of Patagonia during colder periods of the Pleistocene.

Modern outlet glaciers descend through deep valleys toward lakes and Pacific fjords.

On the Argentine side, several glaciers flow into large lakes, including:

  • Lake Argentino
  • Lake Viedma
  • O’Higgins/San Martín Lake
  • Buenos Aires/General Carrera Lake

On the Chilean side, many glaciers descend toward narrow channels and fjords.

Glacial erosion has created:

  • U-shaped valleys
  • Cirques
  • Moraines
  • Hanging valleys
  • Rock basins
  • Fjords
  • Sharp horns
  • Knife-edged ridges

The granite towers of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, and the Cordillera Paine owe much of their modern form to prolonged glacial erosion.

🌊 Rivers, Valleys and Lakes

The Southern Andes form one of the most important watersheds in southern South America.

Rivers of central Chile

Rivers descending from the Andes cross Chile’s Central Valley before reaching the Pacific.

Important systems include the:

  • Aconcagua River
  • Maipo River
  • Rapel River
  • Maule River
  • Itata River
  • Biobío River

These rivers provide water for cities, agriculture, industry, and hydroelectric production.

Rivers of western Argentina

On the eastern side, Andean rivers supply water to dry regions where precipitation is limited.

The Mendoza, San Juan, Tunuyán, Diamante, and Atuel rivers are especially important to agriculture and settlement.

Patagonian lakes

Glaciers carved numerous deep basins along the eastern slopes of the Patagonian Andes.

Major lakes include:

  • Nahuel Huapi
  • Lácar
  • General Carrera/Buenos Aires
  • O’Higgins/San Martín
  • Viedma
  • Argentino
  • Fagnano

Several lakes cross or closely approach the international border and are known by different names in Chile and Argentina.

Chilean fjords

On the Pacific side, many glacial valleys were flooded as sea levels rose.

This created one of the world’s most extensive fjord landscapes. Mountains rise directly from the water, while glaciers descend from ice-covered plateaus into remote channels.

🔄 How the Southern Andes Differ from the Rest of the Andes

The Southern Andes share a common geological origin with the Northern and Central Andes, but their landscapes are very different.

The Southern Andes are distinguished by their remarkable climatic progression.

Moving south through the range, a traveler can pass from:

  6. Glaciated Patagonia
  7. Subpolar Tierra del Fuego

Few other mountain systems contain such an extensive sequence of environments.

🌎 Why the Southern Andes Matter

The Southern Andes influence nearly every aspect of life in Chile and western Argentina.

They:

  • Form much of the international boundary between the two countries
  • Supply water to major cities and agricultural regions
  • Influence rainfall and regional climate
  • Contain glaciers that store freshwater
  • Support forests, grasslands, wetlands, and alpine habitats
  • Provide routes between the Pacific and Atlantic sides of the continent
  • Contain important mineral resources
  • Protect rare plants and wildlife
  • Support hiking, skiing, climbing, and tourism
  • Hold deep cultural importance for Indigenous and local communities

The mountains also create a major ecological barrier.

Moist Pacific air releases much of its precipitation over the western slopes. By the time the air reaches Argentina, it is often much drier, helping create the Patagonian steppe.

This contrast shapes vegetation, wildlife, settlement, agriculture, and land use across the region.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip

When researching a journey in the Southern Andes, begin by identifying which side of the range provides access.

A mountain may lie near the Chile–Argentina border but be accessible only through one country. Roads, permits, border crossings, trailheads, weather, and rescue services can differ substantially between the two sides.

Distances can also be deceptive in Patagonia. A destination that appears close on a map may require a long detour around a lake, fjord, glacier, or border crossing.

The landscapes of the Southern Andes are the result of several powerful forces acting together.

Plate tectonics raised the mountains and created long chains of volcanoes. Earthquakes fractured the crust. Rivers and glaciers cut valleys through uplifted rock, while climate determined whether the slopes became high desert, temperate rainforest, open steppe, or ice-covered wilderness.

Nowhere is that interaction more visible than in Patagonia, where granite towers rise beside enormous glaciers and some of South America’s wettest forests lie surprisingly close to its driest grasslands.

🪨 How the Southern Andes Formed

The Southern Andes belong to the great Andean mountain system created along the western margin of the South American Plate.

For millions of years, oceanic crust has descended beneath South America along the Peru–Chile Trench. This process, known as subduction, compresses and thickens the continental crust while also generating magma, earthquakes, faulting, and regional uplift.

North of southern Patagonia, the Nazca Plate is being subducted beneath the South American Plate. Farther south, the Antarctic Plate descends beneath the continent. The modern mountains did not appear in a single event. The Southern Andes developed through repeated episodes of:

  • Crustal compression
  • Folding and faulting
  • Volcanic eruptions
  • Magma intrusion
  • Regional uplift
  • River erosion
  • Glacial erosion
  • Landslides and rockfalls

The result is not a uniform ridge but a complicated mountain system containing volcanic cones, uplifted sedimentary rocks, ancient metamorphic formations, large granitic intrusions, high plateaus, glacial valleys, and deeply eroded massifs.

🌋 Subduction and Mountain Building

When an oceanic plate sinks beneath a continent, water and other volatile materials are released from the descending slab.

These materials help generate magma in the mantle above the subducting plate. Some magma rises toward the surface and feeds volcanoes. Other magma cools slowly underground, forming large bodies of intrusive rock.

Compression also shortens and thickens the continental crust. Over long geological periods, this process contributed to the uplift of the Andes Mountains and the creation of the high cordilleras separating Chile and Argentina.

Subduction remains active today. It is responsible for the region’s continuing earthquakes, volcanic activity, crustal deformation, and evolving mountain landscapes. (USGS Earthquake Hazards)

🧭 Different Tectonic Sections of the Southern Andes

The tectonic setting changes considerably from north to south.

The flat-slab region

Beneath part of central Chile and western Argentina, the Nazca Plate descends at a comparatively shallow angle before sinking more steeply into the mantle.

This section is commonly known as the Pampean flat-slab region.

Where the slab remains unusually shallow, the hot mantle wedge normally associated with volcanic arcs is reduced or displaced. Consequently, there is a major gap in active volcanism between the Central and Southern Volcanic Zones.

This helps explain why the region surrounding Aconcagua contains extremely high mountains but relatively little modern volcanic activity.

Aconcagua itself is not an active volcano. Although volcanic rocks occur within the broader massif, its modern form results primarily from tectonic uplift, deformation, and erosion.

The normal subduction region

Farther south, the Nazca Plate descends at a steeper angle beneath South America.

This creates conditions favorable for magma generation and supports the extensive Southern Volcanic Zone of Chile and Argentina.

Here, volcanoes such as Tupungatito, Maipo, Planchón-Peteroa, Nevados de Chillán, Copahue, Llaima, Villarrica, Osorno, Calbuco, Chaitén, and Hudson form one of the world’s most active continental volcanic arcs. The Chile Triple Junction

Near the Taitao Peninsula, the Chile Rise meets the Peru–Chile Trench.

This is the Chile Triple Junction, where three tectonic plates meet:

  • Nazca Plate
  • Antarctic Plate
  • South American Plate

The Chile Rise is an underwater spreading ridge separating the Nazca and Antarctic plates. Sections of this ridge have gradually reached the trench and passed beneath South America.

South of the triple junction

South of the Chile Triple Junction, the Antarctic Plate is subducted beneath South America.

Volcanism continues through the Austral Volcanic Zone, which includes several remote and frequently ice-covered volcanoes. This zone is commonly placed between approximately 49° and 55° south latitude. (Sernageomin Library Catalog)

Farther south, the geology of Tierra del Fuego is also influenced by interactions involving the Scotia Plate and major fault systems crossing the archipelago.

The result is a landscape of folded mountains, deep channels, glaciated ridges, and east–west-trending ranges that differ markedly from the predominantly north–south orientation of the Andes farther north.

🪨 Granite Towers of Patagonia

The most recognizable mountains of Patagonia are not volcanic cones.

Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, the Cordillera Paine, and several neighboring massifs consist largely of resistant intrusive igneous rocks.

These rocks formed when magma entered the surrounding crust but cooled underground before reaching the surface.

Later uplift and erosion gradually removed the overlying material. Glaciers then carved deeply into the exposed rock, leaving behind:

  • Vertical walls
  • Sharp ridges
  • Rock towers
  • Deep cirques
  • Hanging valleys
  • Isolated horns

The hard intrusive rocks resisted erosion more effectively than some surrounding sedimentary formations. This difference helped produce the dramatic profiles seen in Torres del Paine, Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, and Cordón Mariano Moreno.

🌋 Volcanoes of the Southern Andes

Volcanoes dominate much of the Southern Andes between central Chile and northern Patagonia.

Some form nearly symmetrical cones rising above forests and lakes. Others belong to large volcanic complexes containing multiple craters, calderas, lava fields, and geothermal areas.

The Southern Volcanic Zone has produced several disruptive eruptions in recent decades. These include eruptions at Chaitén, Puyehue–Cordón Caulle, Villarrica, and Calbuco.

🧊 The Austral Volcanic Zone

The Austral Volcanic Zone is much more remote.

Its volcanoes rise among the icefields, fjords, islands, and scarcely inhabited mountains of southern Patagonia. Important volcanic centers include:

  • Lautaro

  • Aguilera
  • Reclus
  • Monte Burney
  • Fueguino volcanic field

Several of these volcanoes are partly covered by ice, making their eruptive histories difficult to study.

Volcanic ash preserved in lake sediments, peat, soils, and glaciers helps researchers reconstruct past eruptions. Ash layers are especially valuable because they can connect environmental records from widely separated locations.

Volcán Lautaro rises from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field near the Cordón Mariano Moreno. Its remote location and heavy ice cover make direct observation particularly challenging.

🌋 Volcanic Hazards

The hazards associated with a volcano depend on its eruptive style, ice cover, location, and surrounding population.

Southern Andean volcanoes can produce:

  • Ashfall
  • Lava flows
  • Pyroclastic flows
  • Ballistic rocks
  • Volcanic gases
  • Debris avalanches
  • Lahars
  • Flooding
  • Landslides
  • Disruption to aviation

A lahar is a rapidly moving mixture of water, volcanic ash, sediment, and rock. Lahars can travel far down river valleys and may occur during an eruption or when heavy rainfall remobilizes older volcanic deposits.

Snow- and ice-covered volcanoes present an additional hazard. Heat from an eruption can melt ice rapidly, producing floods and debris flows even when lava itself does not reach nearby communities.

Volcanic activity is monitored by Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service and by Argentine scientific agencies. Monitoring commonly includes seismic instruments, gas measurements, satellite observations, cameras, and ground-deformation studies.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip: A volcano does not need to be visibly erupting to be hazardous. Access restrictions may be imposed because of increased seismicity, gas emissions, unstable snow, lahars, or changes within a crater. Always follow the current instructions of park and geological authorities.

🌎 Earthquakes in the Southern Andes

Earthquakes are another direct result of subduction.

Stress builds where the oceanic and continental plates meet. When part of the plate boundary suddenly slips, the stored energy is released as an earthquake.

Chile has experienced several of the largest earthquakes ever recorded.

The magnitude 9.5 earthquake of May 22, 1960, commonly called the Valdivia or Great Chilean earthquake, remains the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the world. Its rupture extended for roughly 1,000 kilometers along south-central Chile and generated a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami. (USGS Earthquake Hazards)

The magnitude 8.8 Maule earthquake of 2010 also occurred along the Chilean subduction zone.

Earthquakes can affect mountain environments by triggering:

  • Coastal uplift or subsidence

In remote mountain areas, an earthquake may isolate valleys by damaging the only access road or causing large slope failures.

⛰️ Landslides and Rockfalls

The steep slopes of the Southern Andes are naturally prone to mass movement.

Rockfalls and landslides may be triggered by:

Patagonian granite towers are continually altered by frost weathering and rockfall. Water enters fractures, freezes, expands, and gradually weakens the rock.

Retreating glaciers can also leave steep valley walls unsupported. These slopes may remain unstable after the ice has disappeared, particularly where fractured rock or loose glacial sediment is present.

🧊 The Patagonian Ice Sheet

During the coldest periods of the Pleistocene, glaciers were far more extensive than they are today.

A vast Patagonian Ice Sheet covered much of the southern Andes. Ice flowed eastward across parts of Argentina and westward toward the Pacific.

Repeated advances and retreats profoundly changed the landscape.

The Northern Patagonian Ice Field lies entirely within Chile.

It covers a remote mountain region surrounding Monte San Valentín, the highest summit in Chilean Patagonia.

Laguna San Rafael National Park protects much of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field and contains native forests as well as glaciers, lakes, wetlands, and mountain habitats.

The Southern Patagonian Ice Field extends through Chile and Argentina.

It is considerably larger than the Northern Patagonian Ice Field and feeds numerous outlet glaciers.

The Southern Andes cross several major climate zones.

🏜️ Climate of the Dry Andes

The northern Southern Andes are extremely dry.

Precipitation is limited, vegetation is sparse, and permanent snow cover is less extensive than might be expected at such high elevations.

Strong solar radiation, low humidity, powerful wind, and large daily temperature changes characterize this environment.

Snowfall is highly variable. A few storms may supply a large portion of the year’s mountain precipitation.

At high elevations, permafrost, seasonal snowfields, and rock glaciers can store water even where conventional glaciers are limited.

☀️ Central Chile’s Mediterranean Climate

Central Chile has a Mediterranean-type climate, with generally dry summers and cooler, wetter winters.

Most precipitation arrives from Pacific storm systems during the cold season. Snow falling in the Andes is stored temporarily and released into rivers during spring and summer.

This seasonal snowpack is vital to:

🌧️ The Temperate Lake District

Summers are generally mild, while winters bring rain to lower elevations and snow to the mountains.

The western slopes are usually wetter than the eastern valleys because Pacific air loses moisture as it rises over the Andes.

💨 Patagonian Weather

Patagonia is strongly influenced by persistent westerly winds.

Moist air from the Pacific rises over the mountains, cools, and produces heavy rain or snow on the Chilean side and over the icefields.

After crossing the divide, the air descends toward Argentina. It warms and dries, creating the pronounced Andean rain shadow responsible for the comparatively arid Patagonian steppe.

This transition can occur across a surprisingly short distance. Temperate rainforest, glaciers, and wet mountain slopes may lie only tens of kilometers from open semi-desert. Scientific studies describe the Southern Andes as an exceptionally efficient barrier to Pacific moisture. (ScienceDirect)

Strong winds are especially characteristic of southern Patagonia.

Mountain passes and valleys can channel and accelerate airflow, while exposed plains provide little protection. Lenticular clouds frequently form above the mountains, indicating powerful winds at elevation.

🌨️ Tierra del Fuego’s Subpolar Climate

Tierra del Fuego has a cool maritime or subpolar climate.

Temperatures are moderated by the surrounding ocean, but the region experiences frequent cloud, wind, rain, sleet, and snow.

The Cordillera Darwin receives much more precipitation than the eastern lowlands of Tierra del Fuego. Its peaks support extensive glaciers despite their relatively modest elevations.

Snow can fall during any season in the high mountains, and weather windows may be brief.

🌿 Vegetation of the Southern Andes

Plant life changes dramatically from north to south and from west to east.

Elevation creates additional zones, allowing dry shrublands, forests, meadows, alpine vegetation, and permanent ice to occur within the same mountain region.

🌵 Plants of the Dry Andes

The highest and driest mountains support sparse vegetation.

Plants must survive intense sunlight, cold nights, strong wind, poor soils, and limited moisture.

Characteristic growth forms include:

🌳 Central Chilean Mountain Vegetation

Lower slopes in central Chile support drought-adapted woodland and shrubland.

Many plants have small, hard leaves that reduce moisture loss during dry summers. This type of vegetation is often described as sclerophyllous.

At higher elevations, woodland gives way to mountain scrub, grassland, cushion plants, and exposed alpine terrain.

These central Chilean ecosystems contain many plants with restricted geographical ranges, but they are also affected by urban expansion, fire, grazing, invasive species, and water demand.

🌲 Araucaria Forests

The volcanic mountains of south-central Chile and neighboring Argentina contain forests of Araucaria araucana, commonly called the monkey puzzle tree or pehuén.

These remarkable conifers can live for many centuries. Their thick trunks, armored leaves, and umbrella-shaped crowns create some of the Southern Andes’ most distinctive forest landscapes.

Araucaria seeds have long held cultural and nutritional importance for Mapuche-Pehuenche communities.

The forests are adapted to volcanic landscapes and snowy winters, but they remain vulnerable to severe fire, land conversion, disease, and climate change.

🌧️ Valdivian Temperate Rainforest

The western slopes of the Lake District and northern Patagonia support Valdivian temperate rainforest.

These forests develop under cool, wet conditions and contain a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees, vines, ferns, mosses, and epiphytes.

🍂 Southern Beech Forests

Species of southern beech, or Nothofagus, dominate many forests of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

Important species include:

  • Lenga
  • Ñire
  • Coihue
  • Coihue de Magallanes

Lenga commonly forms the upper forest belt on mountain slopes. Near the treeline, strong wind and snow can produce low, twisted growth.

Ñire often occupies colder, drier, or poorly drained sites. Farther west and south, evergreen Magellanic coihue grows in wet maritime forests.

During autumn, deciduous southern beech forests turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red.

🌾 Patagonian Steppe

East of the Andes, forests rapidly give way to steppe.

The vegetation consists primarily of:

  • Tough bunchgrasses
  • Low thorny shrubs
  • Cushion plants
  • Drought-resistant herbs

These plants are adapted to wind, limited rainfall, cold winters, and poor soils.

🐾 Wildlife of the Southern Andes

The Southern Andes provide habitat for animals adapted to environments ranging from high desert to rainforest and subpolar grassland.

🦅 Andean Condor

The Andean condor is one of the region’s most recognizable birds.

Condors use rising air currents to travel long distances with minimal effort. Mountain cliffs provide nesting and roosting sites, while open valleys and steppe allow them to locate carrion.

They can be observed from the dry Andes near Aconcagua to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

🦙 Guanaco

The guanaco is the largest native herbivore across much of Patagonia.

A wild relative of the llama, it is well adapted to dry, windy country. Guanacos live in social groups and graze on grasses, herbs, and shrubs.

They are especially visible on the eastern side of the mountains and within protected areas such as Patagonia National Park and Torres del Paine.

🐆 Puma

The puma is the principal large predator of the Southern Andes and Patagonian steppe.

It preys on guanacos and smaller animals and occupies habitats ranging from shrublands to forests and rocky mountains.

Pumas are elusive across most of the range, although sightings have become relatively common in parts of Torres del Paine where open terrain and protected wildlife populations create favorable conditions.

🦌 Huemul

The huemul, or south Andean deer, is one of Patagonia’s most important conservation species.

It inhabits mountain forests, shrublands, valleys, and rocky terrain in Chile and Argentina. Habitat fragmentation, introduced livestock, disease, predation by dogs, and historical hunting have greatly reduced its population.

The huemul appears on Chile’s national coat of arms and is protected within several Andean national parks. Chile’s Patagonia National Park and Laguna San Rafael National Park are among the protected areas supporting the species.

🦌 Pudú

The pudú is one of the world’s smallest deer.

It inhabits dense forests and thick undergrowth in southern Chile and southwestern Argentina.

Its small size allows it to move through tangled vegetation, but forest loss, roads, dogs, and habitat fragmentation are important threats.

🐈 Güiña

The güiña, also called the kodkod, is a small wild cat native to Chile and neighboring areas of Argentina.

It is strongly associated with forests and dense vegetation, where it hunts rodents, birds, and other small animals.

Because it depends on wooded habitat, forest fragmentation can isolate populations.

🦊 Foxes

Several native foxes occur in the Southern Andes.

The culpeo is the larger and more widespread species, while the South American gray fox is common in open areas of Patagonia.

In Tierra del Fuego, introduced foxes and other non-native mammals have altered some local ecosystems.

🐦 Mountain and Forest Birds

Birdlife changes with habitat.

Climate change is affecting different parts of the Southern Andes in different ways.

🧊 Changing Patagonian Glaciers

Most Patagonian glaciers have lost mass, although individual glaciers can behave differently because of local topography, lake depth, precipitation, and ice dynamics.

Glaciers ending in deep lakes or fjords may retreat rapidly once their fronts move into deeper water. Others may remain comparatively stable for a period or even advance despite regional warming.

The IPCC reports that most calving glaciers of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field retreated during the last century. The Patagonian icefields are also major contributors to sea-level rise relative to their area because many outlet glaciers flow rapidly and lose ice through both melting and calving. (IPCC)

Glacial retreat does more than alter scenery. It can change:

  • Downstream water supply
  • Lake levels
  • Sediment movement

  • Slope stability
  • Flood hazards

Newly exposed ground may gradually be colonized by plants, while unstable moraines and valley walls may remain hazardous for many years.

🔥 Drought and Wildfire

Central Chile has experienced prolonged drought and declining snowpack during recent years.

Dry vegetation, high temperatures, strong wind, and human ignition can combine to produce severe wildfires.

Forests farther south are also vulnerable. Some native ecosystems evolved with occasional fire, but repeated or unusually intense fires can exceed their ability to recover.

Araucaria forests, Patagonian steppe, Mediterranean shrublands, and southern beech forests each respond differently to fire.

Post-fire erosion can damage rivers and lakes, particularly on steep mountain slopes.

🌱 Invasive Species

Introduced animals and plants present another major challenge.

In parts of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, non-native species include:

  • North American beavers

Beavers have had an especially visible impact in Tierra del Fuego. Their dams flood forests, alter streams, and change wetlands in ecosystems that did not evolve alongside them.

Managing invasive species across remote terrain and international borders is difficult and expensive.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip

The environment can change completely after crossing the Andean divide.

A trail beginning in sheltered forest may enter exposed alpine terrain within a few hours. Likewise, dry weather in Argentine Patagonia does not guarantee similar conditions on the Chilean side.

Carry layers for wind, rain, and cold even when the valley forecast appears mild. In Patagonia, a waterproof outer layer and secure wind protection are useful during every season.

From the immense slopes of Aconcagua to the granite towers of Patagonia, the Southern Andes contain some of the most celebrated mountain landscapes on Earth.

The region’s highest summits rise in the dry Andes of Argentina and Chile. Farther south, elevation gradually decreases, but the mountains become wetter, steeper, more heavily glaciated, and increasingly difficult to reach.

Aconcagua and Cerro Mercedario dominate the northern Southern Andes, but the lower summits of Patagonia frequently possess greater local relief and much steeper faces.

A mountain such as Fitz Roy is less than half the elevation of Aconcagua, yet it rises in enormous granite walls above nearby glaciers and valleys. Cerro Torre is lower still, but its technical difficulty, unstable ice formations, strong winds, and severe weather have made it one of mountaineering’s legendary objectives.

👑 Aconcagua

Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Andes, South America, the Western Hemisphere, and the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the highest summit on Earth outside Asia.

The mountain rises in Mendoza Province, Argentina, within Aconcagua Provincial Park. Argentina’s national geographic authority measured its elevation at approximately 6,960.8 meters, commonly rounded to 6,961 meters.

Aconcagua is one of the Seven Summits, making it a major objective for international mountaineers.

The Normal Route

The Normal Route approaches from the Horcones Valley and ascends the mountain’s northwestern side.

It does not normally require sustained technical rock or ice climbing, but describing it as easy can be dangerously misleading. Climbers face:

  • Extreme altitude
  • Powerful wind
  • Severe cold
  • Loose scree
  • Dehydration
  • Intense sunlight
  • Sudden storms
  • Long periods above 5,000 meters

Another major approach enters through the Vacas Valley and continues toward the Relinchos Valley and Plaza Argentina.

Some climbers use this approach for the Polish Glacier Traverse or for a longer circuit that descends through the Horcones Valley.

The South Face

Aconcagua’s South Face is a completely different mountaineering challenge from the Normal Route.

Its enormous wall contains steep rock, ice, mixed terrain, avalanches, and rapidly changing conditions. It has historically attracted highly experienced alpinists rather than ordinary Seven Summits expeditions.

Visiting Aconcagua Provincial Park

Visitors who do not intend to climb the summit can still explore the Horcones area, view the mountain from designated trails, or undertake longer treks toward Confluencia and the base camps.

🏔️ Cerro Mercedario

Cerro Mercedario rises in the Cordillera de la Ramada of San Juan Province, approximately 100 kilometers north of Aconcagua.

At about 6,720 meters, it is one of the highest mountains in the Andes. It also possesses exceptional topographic prominence, rising far above the surrounding ranges and valleys.

Mercedario receives far fewer climbers than Aconcagua. Its comparative isolation, long approach, limited infrastructure, and high-altitude conditions create a more remote expedition.

🌋 Tupungato

Tupungato is an enormous volcanic massif on the border between Argentina and Chile.

The mountain rises east of Santiago and southwest of Aconcagua. Although it is commonly described as a volcano, it has been deeply altered by erosion and glaciation and should not be confused with nearby Tupungatito, a smaller and more recently active volcanic complex.

Tupungato’s great size is more apparent from a distance than from immediately beneath it. Its upper slopes form a broad, elevated massif rather than the sharply pointed cone associated with volcanoes such as Osorno or Lanín.

The mountain is remote and considerably less visited than Aconcagua. Approaches can involve long journeys through dry valleys, difficult access roads, river crossings, and complicated permit arrangements.

Tupungato also plays an important role in the skyline of the central Andes and in the headwaters that supply water to lower valleys.

🌋 Marmolejo

Marmolejo rises on the Chile–Argentina border southeast of Santiago.

At approximately 6,108 meters, it is frequently described as the southernmost mountain on Earth exceeding 6,000 meters. South of Marmolejo, the maximum elevation of the Andes falls substantially.

This makes the mountain a useful geographical marker.

North of Marmolejo lie the dry, exceptionally high summits characteristic of the central Chile–Argentina Andes. To the south, volcanoes remain prominent, but few reach comparable elevations.

Marmolejo is a large volcanic complex rather than a perfectly symmetrical cone. Its broad upper slopes contain snow and ice, while the approach passes through dry valleys characteristic of the high Andes.

🌋 Famous Volcanoes of the Southern Andes

The volcanic mountains south of central Chile differ dramatically from the high, dry massifs surrounding Aconcagua.

Many rise above forests, farms, towns, rivers, and glacial lakes. Their relatively isolated cones make them visible from great distances.

🌋 Lanín

Lanín rises above the border between Argentina and Chile, forming the centerpiece of Argentina’s Lanín National Park.

Its snow-covered cone is one of northern Patagonia’s most recognizable landmarks. The mountain also appears on the flag and coat of arms of Argentina’s Neuquén Province.

The normal climbing route is a serious mountaineering undertaking. Conditions may require crampons, ice-axe skills, navigation in poor visibility, and an overnight stay at a mountain refuge or designated camp.

The mountain and surrounding region hold profound cultural importance for Mapuche communities. Visitors should therefore understand Lanín not only as a recreational summit but as part of a living cultural landscape.

🌋 Villarrica

Villarrica is one of Chile’s most active and best-known volcanoes.

Its cone rises near the resort towns of Pucón and Villarrica. A persistent summit crater, recurring eruptions, snow cover, and proximity to populated valleys make it both a major tourist attraction and a closely monitored natural hazard.

Guided ascents are popular when conditions and official alert levels permit. The climb generally involves snow travel and may require crampons, ice axes, helmets, and other equipment.

Access can be suspended because of volcanic unrest, weather, snow conditions, or wildfire risk. Visitors should follow current instructions from Chilean geological and park authorities.

Villarrica National Park includes trails, ski facilities, picnic areas, and mountain landscapes surrounding several volcanic centers.

🌋 Osorno

Osorno rises above the lakes of southern Chile with an almost symmetrical profile.

The volcano is especially prominent from Lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas, Frutillar, and the surrounding countryside. Its appearance is sometimes compared with Mount Fuji, although the two mountains differ in geology and setting.

Osorno’s upper slopes contain snow and glacier remnants. Lower elevations support forests and recreational facilities, including hiking and skiing.

🌋 Llaima

Llaima is a large and frequently active stratovolcano in Chile’s Araucanía Region.

It rises within Conguillío National Park, where lava flows, volcanic ash, araucaria forests, lakes, and rugged ridges create one of the Southern Andes’ most distinctive landscapes.

The volcano’s repeated eruptions have reshaped drainage systems and forest boundaries. Dark lava fields contrast sharply with old araucaria trees and snow-covered upper slopes.

🌋 Tronador

Tronador is an extinct volcanic massif on the Argentina–Chile border.

Its name comes from a Spanish word associated with thunder, referring to the sound of ice breaking from its glaciers and falling down the mountain.

Tronador contains several principal summits and supports glaciers that feed rivers flowing toward both sides of the Andes. The Argentine side is protected within Nahuel Huapi National Park.

The mountain can be viewed from roads and trails near Bariloche, while more ambitious mountaineering routes lead toward refuges and glaciated terrain.

Nahuel Huapi protects a vast landscape of lakes, forests, steppe, and Andean mountains and developed from Argentina’s earliest national-park conservation initiatives.

🧊 Monte San Valentín

Monte San Valentín is the highest mountain in Chilean Patagonia.

It rises beside the Northern Patagonian Ice Field within one of the wettest, most remote, and most heavily glaciated sections of the Southern Andes.

The mountain’s precise elevation has been debated, with different surveys producing slightly different results. Approximately 4,058 meters is now frequently used.

An ascent involves far more than reaching a moderately high summit. Expeditions must manage:

🧊 Monte San Lorenzo

Monte San Lorenzo, also known as Monte Cochrane in Chile, rises on the Argentina–Chile border.

It is one of Patagonia’s highest major massifs and stands apart from the better-known peaks around El Chaltén and Torres del Paine.

The mountain contains several summits, steep ridges, glaciers, and large faces. Its isolation and complicated approaches have kept it far less visited than Fitz Roy.

Nearby communities include Cochrane in Chile and the small Argentine settlement of Lago Posadas. The surrounding landscape contains glacial lakes, steppe, forests, and broad valleys.

🪨 Fitz Roy

Fitz Roy, also known as Cerro Chaltén, is the dominant summit of the Fitz Roy Range.

Its elevation of approximately 3,405 meters is modest compared with Aconcagua, but the mountain rises in immense granite walls. Strong wind, rapidly changing weather, ice-filled cracks, and difficult route-finding make it a world-class technical climbing objective.

The name Chaltén is commonly associated with an Indigenous word interpreted as “smoking mountain,” probably referring to clouds that frequently form around the summit.

French climbers Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone completed the first ascent in 1952. Later routes established Fitz Roy as one of the central peaks in the development of Patagonian alpinism.

Although reaching the summit requires advanced climbing skills, ordinary hikers can enjoy exceptional views from trails beginning in El Chaltén.

Popular viewpoints include:

🪨 Cerro Torre

Cerro Torre is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Andes of Patagonia.

The mountain rises as an extraordinarily steep rock needle, often topped by a changing formation of wind-packed rime ice known as a summit mushroom.

Its difficulties include:

  • Nearly vertical granite
  • Mixed rock-and-ice climbing
  • Overhanging rime formations
  • Extreme exposure
  • Strong wind
  • Heavy icing
  • Short weather windows

Cerro Torre also occupies a controversial place in mountaineering history.

Cesare Maestri and Toni Egger claimed an ascent in 1959, but the claim was later widely disputed because of inconsistencies and the absence of convincing evidence. Hikers can view Cerro Torre from the Laguna Torre trail near El Chaltén. The official park description characterizes the route as a several-hour walk through the Fitz Roy River valley to a panoramic viewpoint over the Cerro Torre massif.

🪨 Torres del Paine and the Cordillera Paine

The Torres del Paine are three granite towers rising above a glacial valley in southern Chile.

They form part of the larger Cordillera Paine, an isolated mountain group east of the main Andean divide.

The massif includes:

  • Cuernos del Paine

🧊 Mountains of Tierra del Fuego

The Andes of Tierra del Fuego form the final above-water section of the Andean chain.

Unlike most of the Andes, the Fuegian mountains run primarily from west to east. They cross islands divided between Chile and Argentina and rise above the Strait of Magellan, the Beagle Channel, and surrounding waterways.

The landscape includes:

  • Ice-covered ridges
  • Fjords

🧊 Cordillera Darwin

The Cordillera Darwin lies entirely within Chile.

Its mountains receive heavy precipitation from the Pacific and support extensive glaciers despite their comparatively low elevations. Deep fjords, icefalls, dense forests, and limited overland access isolate much of the range.

Monte Darwin and Monte Sarmiento are among its best-known summits.

Cloud, wind, precipitation, complicated glaciers, and difficult boat approaches make the range a major expedition environment. Many peaks have received relatively few ascents, while some remote subsidiary summits remain poorly documented.

🌲 National Parks of the Southern Andes

Chile and Argentina protect large portions of the Southern Andes through national parks, provincial parks, reserves, and natural monuments.

🇦🇷 Aconcagua Provincial Park

Aconcagua Provincial Park protects the highest summit in the Americas, its surrounding valleys, glaciers, rivers, archaeological sites, and high-altitude ecosystems.

Visitors range from day hikers exploring the Horcones Valley to international expeditions spending several weeks on the mountain.

🇦🇷 Lanín National Park

Lanín National Park protects the volcano, araucaria forests, numerous lakes, rivers, and a long section of the Argentina–Chile border.

San Martín de los Andes and Junín de los Andes are the main gateways.

🇦🇷 Nahuel Huapi National Park

Nahuel Huapi National Park surrounds a vast network of lakes and mountains near Bariloche.

🇦🇷 Tierra del Fuego National Park

Tierra del Fuego National Park protects forests, mountains, peatlands, rivers, lakes, and coastline west of Ushuaia.

Its trails are generally lower and less technically demanding than those of the high Andes, but rain, wind, mud, and sudden cold remain important considerations.

🇨🇱 Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park

Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park protects mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes around Todos los Santos Lake.

Osorno Volcano dominates many views, while the Petrohué River and Petrohué Falls are among the park’s most visited features.

🇨🇱 Conguillío National Park

Conguillío National Park surrounds Llaima Volcano.

The park’s araucaria forests, lava fields, lakes, and volcanic ridges illustrate the interaction between eruptions and forest development.

🇨🇱 Villarrica National Park

Villarrica National Park contains active volcanic landscapes, forests, alpine terrain, trails, and winter recreation areas.

Access to summit routes depends on volcanic alerts and mountain conditions.

🇨🇱 Queulat National Park

Queulat National Park lies along Chile’s Carretera Austral.

Its best-known feature is the Ventisquero Colgante, or Hanging Glacier, which descends from an elevated icefield above a forested valley.

🇨🇱 Cerro Castillo National Park

Cerro Castillo National Park protects a rugged massif of jagged rock towers, glaciers, forests, and alpine lakes.

The multi-day Cerro Castillo route is often compared with better-known Patagonian treks, although it generally receives fewer visitors than Torres del Paine.

🇨🇱 Laguna San Rafael National Park

Laguna San Rafael National Park protects much of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field.

It includes Monte San Valentín, extensive glaciers, native forests, fjords, rivers, wetlands, and remote mountain environments.

Bernardo O’Higgins is Chile’s largest national park.

It protects an immense region of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, outlet glaciers, fjords, islands, forests, and mountains. Much of the park is accessible only by boat or expedition travel.

🇨🇱 Torres del Paine National Park

Torres del Paine National Park is the most internationally famous protected area in Chilean Patagonia.

Its mountains, lakes, glaciers, wildlife, and established trekking infrastructure attract visitors from around the world.

Weather can close trails with little warning. Current official information shows that the Macizo Paine or O Circuit is seasonally closed during winter, while additional restrictions may apply to the W Circuit and Base Torres route. Rules can change with weather and operational conditions.

Loma del Pliegue Tumbado

This ridge hike provides broad views across the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre massifs.

Because the trail climbs away from the main valleys, it offers a different perspective from the more heavily traveled lake routes.

Huemul Circuit

The Huemul Circuit is a demanding multi-day route around the southern part of the Fitz Roy massif.

It involves remote terrain, river crossings or suspended crossing systems, exposed passes, navigation, and views over the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

It is intended for experienced and properly equipped hikers rather than beginners.

🥾 Torres del Paine W Circuit

The W Circuit connects several of Torres del Paine National Park’s most famous valleys.

Typical highlights include:

  • Grey Glacier

The route receives its name from the shape traced by its three principal valleys.

Accommodation is available at designated camps and refuges, but reservations may be required. Independent camping outside authorized areas is prohibited.

The O Circuit, also called the Macizo Paine Circuit, travels around the entire Paine massif.

It includes much of the W Circuit as well as the more remote northern side of the mountains.
