Annapurna is an 8,091-meter (26,545-foot) mountain in north-central Nepal and the highest summit of the Annapurna Himal. Usually called Annapurna I to distinguish it from the numerous other peaks of the massif, it is the tenth-highest mountain on Earth and one of the fourteen mountains exceeding 8,000 meters.
Few mountains have played a greater role in Himalayan mountaineering history.
On June 3, 1950, French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached the summit, making Annapurna the first 8,000-meter mountain ever climbed. Their ascent preceded the first climb of Mount Everest by almost three years and opened one of the defining periods in the history of high-altitude exploration.
The victory came at a terrible cost. Herzog and Lachenal suffered severe frostbite during an extraordinarily difficult descent, while Gaston Rébuffat and Lionel Terray became snow-blind while helping their companions escape the upper mountain. Herzog eventually lost all of his fingers and toes, and Lachenal lost his toes.
Two decades later, Annapurna again changed Himalayan climbing when a British expedition led by Chris Bonington made the first ascent of the immense south face. Don Whillans and Dougal Haston reached the summit on May 27, 1970, after climbing one of the largest technical walls attempted on an 8,000-meter mountain.
Annapurna has continued to attract generations of elite climbers. Reinhold Messner and Hans Kammerlander established a new northwest-face route in 1985. Jerzy Kukuczka and Artur Hajzer made the first winter ascent in 1987. Ueli Steck completed an extraordinary solo climb of a new line on the south face in 2013.
Today, Annapurna remains one of the world’s most serious expedition mountains. Its enormous avalanche-prone faces, unstable seracs, complicated glaciers, extreme altitude, and rapidly changing snow conditions give the mountain a reputation that extends far beyond its numerical ranking as the world’s tenth-highest peak.

🏔️ Where Is Annapurna?
Annapurna rises in the Annapurna Himal of north-central Nepal, northwest of Pokhara and east of the deep Kali Gandaki Gorge.
The mountain forms the highest point of a huge massif extending for roughly 55 kilometers.
Dhaulagiri rises west of Annapurna across the Kali Gandaki valley. At 8,167 meters, Dhaulagiri is slightly higher and forms one of the most dramatic neighboring massifs in the Himalayas.
Other major Annapurna summits stretch eastward from Annapurna I.
Annapurna II reaches approximately 7,937 meters.
Annapurna III rises to 7,555 meters.
Annapurna IV reaches 7,525 meters.
Gangapurna stands at 7,455 meters, while Annapurna Dakshin rises on the southern side of the massif.
The entire mountain group lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s largest conservation area.

📏 How High Is Annapurna?
Annapurna I reaches 8,091 meters (26,545 feet) above sea level.
It is the tenth-highest mountain in the world.
Only thirteen other independent mountains reach the 8,000-meter threshold, all of them in the Himalayas or Karakoram.
Annapurna stands lower than neighboring Dhaulagiri but higher than every mountain outside Asia.
Its ranking sometimes disguises its scale.
From the valleys below, Annapurna rises more than five vertical kilometers above surrounding terrain.
Its enormous south face alone is roughly 3,000 meters high, creating one of the largest mountain walls in the Himalayas.
📐 Prominence and Isolation
Annapurna has approximately 2,984 meters (9,790 feet) of topographic prominence.
That easily exceeds the 1,500-meter threshold required for classification as an ultra-prominent mountain.
Its key col lies at approximately 5,107 meters.
The summit has roughly 34 kilometers of topographic isolation before higher terrain is encountered.
These measurements demonstrate that Annapurna is not merely the highest point of a crowded ridge.
It is one of the most geographically independent major mountains in the Himalayas.
The Annapurna massif contains numerous high subsidiary peaks, but Annapurna I stands clearly above them as the dominant summit.
🌾 What Does Annapurna Mean?
The name Annapurna comes from Sanskrit.
It is associated with the Hindu goddess Annapurna, a manifestation of Parvati connected with nourishment and abundance.
The name is generally interpreted as “full of food,” “full of grain,” or “Goddess of Harvests.”
“Anna” refers to food or grain, while “purna” conveys the idea of fullness or completeness.
The name is therefore quite different from the harsh physical character of the mountain itself.
Annapurna’s glaciers and snowfields ultimately feed rivers and agricultural valleys far below, giving the association with nourishment an appropriate geographical dimension as well.
🏔️ The Annapurna Massif
Annapurna is not a single isolated pyramid.
The massif contains a remarkable concentration of high mountains.
The principal summit, Annapurna I Main, reaches 8,091 meters.
Nearby are subsidiary points generally known as Annapurna I Central and Annapurna I East, both approaching or exceeding 8,000 meters depending on the measurement used.
The wider massif includes Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Annapurna Dakshin, Annapurna Fang, Hiunchuli, Tarke Kang, Khangsar Kang, and numerous other major summits.
Machapuchare, one of Nepal’s most recognizable mountains, rises south of the main chain.
The complexity of this landscape creates dramatically different climbing environments depending on which side of Annapurna is approached.
🌧️ A Great Climatic Barrier
The Annapurna massif forms an enormous barrier to moisture arriving from the south.
Warm monsoon air rises against the southern slopes, producing heavy precipitation.
The valleys south of the massif can therefore be extremely wet.
On the northern side, Manang and parts of Mustang lie within a pronounced Himalayan rain shadow.
The change can be dramatic.
Lush forested valleys south of the mountains give way to much drier landscapes only a relatively short distance beyond the main Himalayan crest.
This contrast is one reason the Annapurna region contains such exceptional ecological diversity.
It also has direct consequences for mountaineering.
Heavy precipitation on Annapurna produces deep snowpacks and contributes to the mountain’s severe avalanche hazard.
📜 The Search for an 8,000-Meter Summit
In 1950, no human had yet stood on the summit of an 8,000-meter mountain.
The French Himalayan Committee organized an expedition with an ambitious objective: climb one.
The team was led by Maurice Herzog.
Its elite climbing members included Louis Lachenal, Lionel Terray, Gaston Rébuffat, Jean Couzy, and Marcel Schatz.
Jacques Oudot served as expedition doctor, while Marcel Ichac documented the journey.
The French initially had two possible objectives in Nepal:
Dhaulagiri or Annapurna.
They knew relatively little about either mountain.
Modern detailed maps did not exist, and even the exact approaches were uncertain.
The expedition therefore began as much as an exploration project as a climbing attempt.

🗺️ The Dhaulagiri Problem
The French first focused on Dhaulagiri.
At 8,167 meters, it was the higher of their two potential objectives.
Repeated reconnaissance produced discouraging results.
The routes they examined appeared extremely difficult, and the approaching summer monsoon left little time for a prolonged technical siege.
The expedition therefore shifted its attention toward Annapurna.
That decision created another problem.
The French possessed only limited mapping of the area.
They had to determine where the mountain actually was, find access through surrounding valleys, and identify a route to its previously unseen northern side.
For days, expedition members explored ridges, valleys, and passes.
Eventually they discovered a viable approach.
🔍 Discovering the North Face
The northern side of Annapurna gradually came into view.
Compared with Dhaulagiri’s apparently forbidding walls, it offered an encouraging possibility.
The mountain remained exceptionally dangerous.
The route crossed glacier systems and passed beneath avalanche-prone slopes.
But the French could see a potential line upward.
The expedition rapidly changed focus.
Time was critical.
The monsoon was approaching, and there was no opportunity for a long period of route development.
High camps were established with increasing speed as climbers and Sherpas transported equipment toward the summit.
🏕️ Racing the Monsoon
The French route climbed Annapurna’s north side through a series of glacier terraces and snow slopes.
The expedition established increasingly high camps as the weather deteriorated.
Herzog and Lachenal emerged as the strongest summit pair.
Both knew that conditions were becoming dangerous.
The monsoon could arrive at any moment.
The climbers also had little experience with the physiological effects of spending time above 8,000 meters.
No one did.
There was no accumulated history of successful 8,000-meter climbing from which to draw lessons.
Every decision represented new territory in high-altitude mountaineering.
🏆 First Ascent — June 3, 1950
On June 3, 1950, Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal continued upward from their highest camp.
They climbed without supplemental oxygen.
At approximately 2 p.m., the two men reached Annapurna’s summit.
For the first time in human history, climbers had stood on an 8,000-meter peak.
Herzog photographed Lachenal and raised the French flag.
The summit achievement became one of the defining events of 20th-century mountaineering.
Yet the celebration lasted only briefly.
Clouds were gathering.
The climbers were exhausted.
They were extremely high on a mountain whose descent had not been fully prepared.
The struggle to survive was just beginning.
⚠️ Herzog Loses His Gloves
During the descent, Herzog lost his gloves.
At more than 8,000 meters, this seemingly simple accident had catastrophic consequences.
His hands rapidly began freezing.
Lachenal was also suffering from severe cold injuries to his feet.
The two descended toward their high camp as weather deteriorated.
Below them, Lionel Terray and Gaston Rébuffat were waiting.
The four climbers eventually reunited, but darkness, snow, exhaustion, and limited visibility transformed the descent into an ordeal.
❄️ Snow Blindness and Frostbite
Rébuffat and Terray developed snow blindness.
Herzog and Lachenal suffered increasingly severe frostbite.
The four men became a team in which virtually everyone had a serious physical impairment.
At one point during the retreat, the climbers lost their route and spent the night in a crevasse.
The situation became desperate.
Yet the team continued downward.
Other expedition members and Sherpas assisted as they reached progressively lower camps.
Dr. Jacques Oudot began treating the frostbite.
His efforts helped save lives, but some injuries were beyond repair.
🏥 The Cost of the First Ascent
The journey home was long and painful.
Herzog ultimately lost all of his fingers and toes to frostbite.
Lachenal lost his toes.
Both endured repeated medical procedures during the return from Nepal.
The expedition nevertheless became an enormous cultural event in France.
Herzog’s book Annapurna became one of the most widely read mountaineering books ever published.
The first ascent was celebrated as a symbol of French national achievement in the years following World War II.
For climbers, its importance was even greater.
The 8,000-meter barrier had been broken.
🏔️ Twenty Years Without Another Ascent
Annapurna’s first ascent did not immediately create a well-traveled climbing route.
The mountain went almost 20 years without another confirmed ascent.
Nepal temporarily restricted or closed some mountaineering access during portions of this period.
More importantly, Annapurna had already demonstrated its danger.
Its glaciers and north-side slopes were heavily exposed to avalanches.
When mountaineers returned around 1970, they began exploring not only the first-ascent terrain but also a completely different challenge on the southern side.
🇬🇧 The South Face
Annapurna’s south face is one of the great walls of the Himalayas.
It rises approximately 3,000 meters, or nearly 10,000 feet, from the glacier below toward the summit.
The face contains enormous rock bands, icefields, couloirs, snow slopes, and avalanche paths.
From a distance, it appears almost impossibly steep for a mountain exceeding 8,000 meters.
British climber Chris Bonington became fascinated with the wall after seeing Annapurna from the summit region of Annapurna II in 1960.
By the end of the decade, improvements in equipment and technical climbing had made a serious attempt conceivable.
Bonington organized a powerful British expedition for spring 1970.
🧗 A New Era of Himalayan Climbing
The south-face expedition included many of Britain’s strongest climbers.
Among them were:
Don Whillans, Dougal Haston, Ian Clough, Mick Burke, Martin Boysen, Nick Estcourt, Tom Frost, and others.
The team applied big-wall climbing techniques to an 8,000-meter Himalayan face.
Fixed ropes extended through thousands of meters of difficult terrain.
The technical crux included an enormous rock band high on the mountain.
Above it, climbers still had to negotiate steep ice before reaching the summit snowfields.
The scale of the climb was unprecedented.
🏆 South Face — May 27, 1970
Don Whillans and Dougal Haston became the summit pair.
They established the highest camp at approximately 24,000 feet.
Above them lay a steep ice couloir leading toward the summit snowfield.
Despite severe weather, the two continued upward.
On May 27, 1970, Whillans and Haston reached the summit.
They had completed the first ascent of Annapurna’s south face.
The route immediately became recognized as one of the great landmarks in Himalayan climbing.
Technical big-wall climbing had now been successfully carried onto an 8,000-meter peak.
🕯️ The Death of Ian Clough
The expedition’s success was followed by tragedy.
After the summit, climbers began withdrawing equipment from the mountain.
On May 30, a serac collapsed near the lower route.
The resulting avalanche struck Ian Clough, killing him.
Clough had been one of Britain’s most accomplished technical climbers and had played an important role in establishing the south-face route.
His death cast a shadow over an otherwise historic climb.
A memorial to Clough was later established near Annapurna Base Camp.
The accident also reinforced one of the defining realities of Annapurna: objective hazards remain dangerous even when climbers are technically capable of overcoming the route.
🇳🇱 The Dutch Rib — 1977
A Dutch expedition opened an important new line on the north side in 1977.
The team deliberately sought a route that would avoid some of the avalanche danger associated with the original French line.
They climbed a prominent rib through the north face.
Mathieu van Rijswick and Sonam Sherpa reached the summit on October 13, 1977.
The route became known as the Dutch Rib.
Its perceived reduction in avalanche exposure made it important for later expeditions.
Only a year later, an American women’s team would use the Dutch route in one of Annapurna’s most significant climbs.
👩 The 1978 American Women’s Expedition
In 1978, American climber Arlene Blum organized and led the American Women’s Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna.
At the time, women were still frequently excluded from major high-altitude expeditions.
The expedition was intended not only to climb Annapurna but also to demonstrate that women could organize, lead, and carry out major Himalayan climbs themselves.
Raising money was a major challenge.
The team famously sold T-shirts bearing the slogan:
“A Woman’s Place Is On Top.”
The expedition chose the Dutch Rib because it appeared safer than the heavily avalanche-exposed original French route.
🏆 First Women’s Ascent — October 15, 1978
On October 15, 1978, Vera Komarkova and Irene Miller reached Annapurna’s summit.
They were accompanied by Chewang Rinzing Sherpa and Mingma Tsering Sherpa.
Komarkova and Miller became the first women to stand on Annapurna’s summit and the first American women to climb an 8,000-meter mountain.
The achievement was a landmark in women’s mountaineering.
But again, Annapurna transformed success into tragedy.
Two other expedition climbers were still moving toward the summit.
🕯️ Vera Watson and Alison Chadwick-Onyszkiewicz
On October 17, Vera Watson and Alison Chadwick-Onyszkiewicz were climbing together above Camp IV.
They apparently slipped on steep icy terrain and fell to their deaths.
The accident devastated the expedition.
Blum and her teammates later created a memorial fund honoring the two climbers and supporting opportunities for women in mountaineering.
The expedition’s history therefore carries the same combination of triumph and loss that appears repeatedly throughout Annapurna’s climbing record.
🧗 Messner and Kammerlander — 1985
By the 1980s, Himalayan climbing was changing again.
Large fixed-rope expeditions remained common, but elite alpinists increasingly sought faster and lighter ascents with minimal support.
Reinhold Messner and Hans Kammerlander arrived at Annapurna in spring 1985.
They targeted the previously unclimbed northwest face.
Rather than establish a traditional chain of camps with extensive fixed rope, they moved rapidly.
From Base Camp, the summit took only a few days.
🏆 Northwest Face
Messner and Kammerlander established a line across the northwest face, eventually gaining the upper mountain.
Their bivouacs were approximately 7,200 and 7,450 meters.
On April 24, 1985, they reached Annapurna’s summit.
The entire ascent from Base Camp took only about five days.
The route represented a major contrast with the huge expedition tactics employed during the first ascent and the 1970 south-face climb.
Messner and Kammerlander then moved directly to Dhaulagiri, where they climbed another 8,000-meter summit only weeks later.
For Messner, Annapurna was his eleventh 8,000-meter mountain.
❄️ First Winter Ascent — 1987
Annapurna remained unclimbed during the calendar winter until 1987.
Polish climbers had become the dominant specialists in winter Himalayan mountaineering during the 1980s.
The Annapurna expedition included Jerzy Kukuczka, Artur Hajzer, Wanda Rutkiewicz, and Krzysztof Wielicki.
The team followed essentially the original 1950 route on the north side.
Conditions were brutally cold.
No Sherpas climbed above Base Camp, and the expedition did not use supplemental oxygen.
🏆 February 3, 1987
Jerzy Kukuczka and Artur Hajzer reached the summit on February 3, 1987.
They had completed the first winter ascent of Annapurna.
The climb was also the first Polish ascent of the mountain.
For Kukuczka, Annapurna was especially important.
It became his thirteenth 8,000-meter summit, leaving only Shishapangma before he completed all fourteen.
Winter climbing at 8,091 meters placed extraordinary demands on the pair.
Temperatures, wind, short daylight hours, and unstable weather were all significantly harsher than during the normal spring and autumn climbing seasons.
🧗 The South Face Evolves
The 1970 British route did not end development of the south face.
Polish climbers established another major route in 1981, tackling extremely steep snow ribs and difficult ice.
Other expeditions attempted variations through the wall during the 1980s and 1990s.
The south face became a laboratory for different Himalayan climbing styles.
Some teams used extensive fixed ropes.
Others attempted much lighter alpine-style climbs.
Several expeditions were stopped by rockfall, avalanches, storms, or extreme technical difficulty.
The wall continued to produce both celebrated ascents and serious accidents.
⚠️ Pierre Béghin and Jean-Christophe Lafaille — 1992
French climbers Pierre Béghin and Jean-Christophe Lafaille attempted a bold new alpine-style line on the south face in 1992.
They climbed to approximately 7,400 meters.
A storm forced them to retreat.
During the descent, one of their rappel anchors failed.
Béghin fell to his death.
Lafaille was left alone high on the south face with limited equipment.
He eventually completed an extraordinary solo descent and survived.
Their unfinished line remained one of the great problems on Annapurna for another two decades.
⚡ Ueli Steck — 2013
Swiss alpinist Ueli Steck returned to the Béghin–Lafaille line in October 2013.
Steck had already attempted the south face in 2007, when falling rock struck him, smashed his helmet, and knocked him unconscious.
Six years later, he tried again.
This time he climbed alone.
Steck crossed the bergschrund on October 8 and moved rapidly through the wall.
He made only a short stop around 6,800 meters before continuing upward.
Around 1 a.m. on October 9, he reached the summit.
🏆 A 28-Hour Round Trip
Steck immediately began descending.
Rather than rappel the entire wall, he downclimbed most of the face and used only a small number of rappels.
He returned to the bergschrund approximately 28 hours after beginning the climb.
The ascent became one of the most discussed high-altitude solos of the modern era.
It represented an extraordinary contrast with the 1970 British expedition, which had required an enormous team, multiple camps, and extensive fixed ropes to solve the south face.
Steck demonstrated how far speed, equipment, acclimatization, and lightweight climbing tactics had developed over four decades.
🧊 Glaciers and Terrain
Annapurna contains an exceptionally complicated collection of glaciers, snowfields, walls, and ridges.
The original north-side routes cross heavily crevassed glaciers and avalanche-prone slopes.
The south face rises almost directly above the South Annapurna Glacier in an enormous triangular wall.
Hanging glaciers and seracs occur throughout the massif.
The mountain’s geography creates numerous avalanche paths.
Fresh snow can accumulate on steep slopes before releasing in enormous slides.
Wind can move snow into unstable slabs.
Warm temperatures increase the risk of falling ice and rock.
These objective hazards are one of the principal reasons Annapurna has remained such a serious climbing mountain despite advances in equipment and forecasting.
⚠️ Why Annapurna Is So Dangerous
Annapurna has historically been regarded as one of the most dangerous 8,000-meter mountains.
That reputation is based less on extreme technical difficulty alone than on objective hazard.
Avalanches are particularly important.
Many routes cross or pass beneath slopes where climbers have limited ability to control their exposure.
Seracs can collapse without warning.
Heavy snowfall can rapidly change a safe-looking slope into unstable avalanche terrain.
The danger also shifts from year to year as glaciers retreat and ice structures change.
Consequently, an established route does not remain permanently safe.
Experienced climbers must continually reassess the mountain rather than assuming conditions will resemble those encountered by previous expeditions.
🌦️ Climate and Weather
Annapurna is strongly influenced by the South Asian monsoon.
Moisture arriving from the south produces heavy precipitation on the massif.
Summer is generally unsuitable for high-altitude climbing because of extensive snowfall, cloud, and avalanche conditions.
Spring and autumn form the main expedition periods.
Spring expeditions climb before the monsoon arrives.
The 1950 French team was essentially racing against its onset.
Autumn can provide clearer weather following the monsoon but may leave large quantities of accumulated snow on the mountain.
Winter brings much colder temperatures and severe winds.
The 1987 Polish ascent demonstrated that Annapurna can be climbed in winter, but conditions are exceptionally demanding.

🌿 Flora and Fauna
Annapurna lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, a protected landscape covering approximately 7,629 square kilometers.
The conservation area contains an extraordinary range of ecosystems.
Lower elevations support subtropical and temperate forests.
Rhododendrons are particularly characteristic of the region, producing spectacular spring displays.
Other vegetation includes oak, bamboo, pine, fir, birch, hemlock, juniper, orchids, and numerous alpine plants.
As elevation increases, forests give way to alpine grasslands and scrub.
Above the vegetation zone, permanent snow, glacier ice, scree, and exposed rock dominate.
Annapurna’s summit lies far beyond the limits of vascular plant life.

🐾 Wildlife
The Annapurna Conservation Area supports more than 100 species of mammals.
One of the most celebrated is the snow leopard, which inhabits remote high-altitude terrain.
Blue sheep, or bharal, graze on rocky alpine slopes and provide an important prey species for snow leopards.
Other mammals include Himalayan tahr, musk deer, Himalayan black bears, and numerous smaller species.
Birdlife is exceptionally diverse.
Nepal Tourism Board records hundreds of bird species in the conservation area, including the colorful Himalayan monal, koklass pheasant, and blood pheasant.
The contrast between this biodiversity and the lifeless environment of Annapurna’s upper mountain is extreme.
🏞️ Annapurna Conservation Area
The Annapurna Conservation Area is Nepal’s largest conservation area and one of the country’s most important trekking landscapes.
It encompasses the entire Annapurna massif and surrounding regions including Manang, Mustang, the Kali Gandaki Valley, and numerous mountain communities south of the range.
The protected area extends from relatively low subtropical valleys all the way to Annapurna’s 8,091-meter summit.
Its landscapes include forests, high mountains, river gorges, alpine meadows, glaciers, and trans-Himalayan desert.
The region is equally important culturally.
Gurung, Thakali, Manangi, Tibetan-influenced, and other Himalayan communities have lived throughout these valleys for generations.
🥾 Annapurna Base Camp
The south side of Annapurna can be experienced without technical mountaineering through the famous trek to Annapurna Base Camp.
The route climbs northward into the natural amphitheater known as the Annapurna Sanctuary.
At its head, Annapurna I’s immense south face rises directly above the glacier.
The contrast in scale is extraordinary.
Trekkers stand at roughly 4,100 meters while the summit towers almost four vertical kilometers higher.

🏔️ The Annapurna Sanctuary
The Annapurna Sanctuary is a high glacial basin enclosed by enormous mountains.
Its entrance is relatively narrow, but the upper valley opens into a spectacular amphitheater.
