Puʻuhuluhulu is a forest-covered volcanic cone rising to approximately 6,758 feet (2,060 meters) in the high saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaiʻi. Surrounded by stark lava fields, this green hill is one of the most distinctive landmarks along the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, commonly known as Saddle Road.
The contrast is striking. Dark volcanic rock spreads across much of the surrounding landscape, while koa, māmane, ʻōhiʻa, shrubs, grasses, and other vegetation cover the older cone. There are several Hawaiian geographic features named Puʻuhuluhulu. The summit described here is specifically the 6,758-foot forested cinder cone beside the Mauna Kea Access Road, not the Puʻuhuluhulu cinder cone near Maunaulu in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park or another 6,005-foot summit farther north.
📍 Where Is Puʻuhuluhulu?
Puʻuhuluhulu stands near the center of Hawaiʻi Island in the broad upland between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
The cone sits on the southern side of Hawaiʻi Route 200, the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, directly across from the intersection with the Mauna Kea Access Road.
This location makes Puʻuhuluhulu unusually accessible for a Hawaiian mountain feature at nearly 7,000 feet.
Travelers crossing the island between Hilo and the Kona or Waimea side pass directly beside it.

The line parent is Mauna Kea, whose immense volcanic slopes rise north of the saddle to 13,803 feet.
Most of Puʻuhuluhulu’s elevation therefore comes from its position high on the Maunakea volcanic landscape rather than from the height of the cone itself.
🌋 A Cinder Cone on Maunakea
Puʻuhuluhulu is a cinder cone, created by explosive eruptions from a localized volcanic vent.
When gas-rich magma reaches the surface, expanding gases can throw blobs and fragments of molten rock into the air. These fragments cool into cinders, scoria, ash, and volcanic bombs before falling back around the vent.
Repeated eruptions gradually construct a steep-sided cone.
Puʻuhuluhulu belongs to the Lower Laupāhoehoe volcanic series of Maunakea.
These rocks represent a relatively late phase in the long evolution of the volcano, after Maunakea’s enormous shield had already been constructed.
Many cones dot the upper and middle slopes of Maunakea, giving the volcano a much bumpier appearance than the smoother profile of neighboring Mauna Loa.
Puʻuhuluhulu is one of those cones, but its surviving forest makes it especially distinctive.
🌎 How Maunakea Formed
Mauna Kea was created by the same Hawaiian hotspot responsible for the rest of the island chain.
As the Pacific Plate moved over a persistent source of magma deep beneath the crust, enormous shield volcanoes accumulated layer upon layer of basaltic lava.
Maunakea eventually rose from the ocean floor to become one of the largest mountains on Earth when measured from its submarine base.
Its principal shield-building stage ended hundreds of thousands of years ago.
Later eruptions became less frequent and more localized, creating numerous cinder cones across the upper slopes.
Puʻuhuluhulu preserves evidence from this later volcanic stage.
Although Maunakea is considered dormant rather than extinct, its most recent known eruptions occurred several thousand years ago.
🏝️ What Is a Kīpuka?
One of the most fascinating things about Puʻuhuluhulu is that it functions as a kīpuka.
A kīpuka is an area of older land surrounded by younger lava.
When a lava flow advances across a landscape, it does not always cover everything in its path. Hills, ridges, or patches of higher terrain can divert the flow.
If lava moves around both sides and reconnects beyond the obstacle, the older landscape becomes an island surrounded by newer volcanic rock.
That is precisely what happened at Puʻuhuluhulu.
The old cinder cone remained above surrounding lava, allowing its forest to survive while younger flows transformed the land around it.
From a distance, its green vegetation can look almost like an island floating in a dark sea of lava.
🌋 The 1843 Mauna Loa Lava Flow
Much of the dramatic landscape around Puʻuhuluhulu reflects eruptions from neighboring Mauna Loa.
An important lava flow crossed the saddle region during Mauna Loa’s 1843 eruption.
The flow surrounded Puʻuhuluhulu but did not bury the cone.
This event reinforced its role as a kīpuka and created the remarkable modern contrast between dark nineteenth-century lava and mature native vegetation.

Few easily accessible places demonstrate Hawaiʻi Island’s volcanic scale as clearly as Puʻuhuluhulu.
To the north, Mauna Kea reaches approximately 13,803 feet and forms the highest summit in Hawaiʻi.
To the south, Mauna Loa rises to more than 13,600 feet and ranks among the largest active volcanoes on Earth by volume.
Puʻuhuluhulu stands almost directly between them.
The saddle is therefore a meeting place between two immense volcanic systems.
Lava from Mauna Loa has crossed terrain originally associated with Maunakea, while the small cone itself preserves a much older volcanic surface amid younger lava.

Because younger lava did not cover the hill, the older soils remained intact.
Plants could continue growing while much of the surrounding landscape was reset to bare volcanic rock.

🌿 Flora and Fauna
The Puʻuhuluhulu forest includes koa, one of Hawaiʻi’s most important native trees, along with elements of dry and mixed montane forest.
Māmane, ʻōhiʻa lehua, native shrubs, grasses, and other plants occur in the broader landscape.
Koa trees can grow impressively large where conditions are favorable. Their canopy provides shelter and food for birds, insects, and other organisms while helping stabilize volcanic soils.
The high-elevation forest also offers an important refuge from the open lava fields and grasslands surrounding the cone.
Native and endemic birds recorded in the area include nēnē, Hawaiʻi’s endemic goose; ʻio, the Hawaiian hawk; pueo, the Hawaiian short-eared owl; ʻapapane; ʻiʻiwi; ʻōmaʻo; and Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi.
Numerous introduced bird species also occur in the area.
The mix of native forest, open lava, grasslands, and high-elevation conditions creates an unusually diverse birding environment within a small area.
🐦 A Refuge for Hawaiian Birds
Kīpuka can play an especially important role for Hawaiian forest birds.
A lava flow may eliminate vegetation across a broad area, but surviving forest islands preserve food sources, nest sites, and shelter.
Puʻuhuluhulu’s trees therefore form a biological stepping stone in an otherwise open landscape.
The Hawaiʻi Birding Trails program recognizes Puʻu Huluhulu as a birding hotspot and lists more than 30 bird species associated with the site.
Visitors may hear native honeycreepers feeding among flowers or moving through the canopy.

Nēnē may also occur in the open high-elevation country surrounding the cone.

🌱 A Remnant of a Much Larger Forest
Puʻuhuluhulu also provides a glimpse into how dramatically Hawaiʻi Island’s forests have changed.
Dry and mesic koa forests once occupied much larger portions of the island’s middle elevations.
Logging, ranching, grazing animals, wildfire, invasive plants, and other disturbances substantially reduced those forests.
Puʻuhuluhulu survived partly because its volcanic geography protected it.
The forested cone remained an island of older soil and vegetation while the surrounding landscape experienced lava flows and later land-use changes.
Its trees therefore preserve ecological continuity extending much farther into the past than the adjacent lava fields.

🌺 What Does Puʻuhuluhulu Mean?
The name Puʻuhuluhulu is commonly translated as “hairy hill,” “shaggy hill,” or “hill covered with hair.”
In Hawaiian, puʻu commonly means hill, mound, peak, or protuberance.
Huluhulu can refer to hair, fur, feathers, or something shaggy.
The interpretation becomes immediately understandable when viewing the cone from across the lava fields.
Its dense vegetation makes it appear distinctly hairy or shaggy compared with the bare volcanic landscape around it.
Traditional accounts collected through the University of Hawaiʻi’s Kahoʻiwai place-name project describe paniolo noticing that Puʻuhuluhulu was unusual because trees covered the hill while many surrounding puʻu were barren.
The vegetation itself therefore became central to the place name.
🐎 Puʻuhuluhulu and Hawaiian Paniolo
The landscape around Maunakea has a long history of paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy, activity.
Large ranching operations developed on Hawaiʻi Island during the nineteenth century, and cattle were driven through the high country between Maunakea, Mauna Loa, and Kohala.
Puʻuhuluhulu became a recognizable landmark for riders.
Traditional mele associated with Hawaiian cowboys refer to the forested hill and to activities such as riding, roping cattle, and traveling through the uplands.

Recent cultural documentation identifies Puʻu Huluhulu as a wahi pana, a storied or culturally significant place.
Its importance includes place-name traditions, paniolo history, relationships with the surrounding ʻāina, and its geographic position opposite the Mauna Kea Access Road.
In 2019, the area around Puʻuhuluhulu became internationally known when Native Hawaiian kiaʻi and supporters gathered there during opposition to construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Maunakea.
A puʻuhonua, or place of refuge, was established in connection with that movement.
Regardless of a visitor’s reason for stopping, the area should be approached with awareness that it is not simply a recreational viewpoint but part of a living Hawaiian cultural landscape.

The elevation can make uphill walking feel more strenuous than expected, particularly for visitors arriving directly from sea level.
The trail passes through native forest before reaching higher viewpoints.
Clear conditions can produce outstanding views across the saddle toward Maunakea, Mauna Loa, numerous volcanic cones, and broad expanses of lava.
🧭 Trail Conditions and Safety
Puʻuhuluhulu sits at nearly 7,000 feet, and conditions can be very different from those at Hawaiʻi Island’s beaches.
Strong winds, cold temperatures, cloud, fog, rain, and intense sunlight are all possible.
The area is also exceptionally dry at times.
State trail information warns that hunters frequent the surrounding area, so hikers are advised to wear bright clothing and remain aware of their surroundings.
Fire is another important concern.
Visitors should never smoke or park vehicles in dry grass, where hot components beneath a vehicle could ignite vegetation.
There is no camping permitted on the Puʻu Huluhulu Loop Trail.
Staying on established paths also protects fragile vegetation and reduces erosion.
☀️ High-Elevation Conditions
Elevation deserves more attention than the short trail distance might suggest.
At 6,758 feet, Puʻuhuluhulu is higher than almost every mountain summit in the eastern United States.

Ultraviolet radiation is also stronger at elevation, and the open Hawaiian sun can produce rapid sunburn even in cool air.
Water, sunscreen, a hat, suitable footwear, and a light insulating or rain layer are useful even on a brief hike.
Weather can change rapidly in the Humuʻula Saddle.
Clouds sometimes form around the mountain slopes with little warning, dramatically reducing visibility.
🔥 Fire and Invasive Species
Dry high-elevation forests in Hawaiʻi face growing pressure from wildfire and invasive plants.
Many native Hawaiian ecosystems evolved without frequent fire.
As a result, native plants may recover poorly after burning.
Introduced grasses can make the problem worse by producing large quantities of dry fuel. After fire, those same grasses can spread rapidly, creating a cycle in which landscapes become increasingly flammable.
Puʻuhuluhulu’s surviving forest is therefore particularly valuable.
Visitors can help protect it by obeying fire restrictions, remaining on designated trails, cleaning footwear when appropriate, and never disturbing native plants.
🏔️ Nearby Mountains and Volcanoes
Mauna Kea rises immediately north of Puʻuhuluhulu and is the cone’s topographic parent. At approximately 13,803 feet, it is the highest mountain in Hawaiʻi.
Mauna Loa dominates the southern horizon. Lava from this enormous active shield volcano surrounds portions of Puʻuhuluhulu and helped create its modern kīpuka setting.
Hualālai rises west of the saddle near the Kona coast and represents another of Hawaiʻi Island’s major volcanoes.
Kīlauea lies southeast of Mauna Loa and remains one of the world’s most closely studied active volcanoes.

🌋 Do Not Confuse It With the Other Puʻuhuluhulu
The Hawaiian Islands contain more than one summit named Puʻuhuluhulu.
One particularly well-known example lies in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park near Maunaulu.
That Puʻuhuluhulu is a forested cinder cone on Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone and rises to only about 3,400 feet.
Another Puʻuhuluhulu on Hawaiʻi Island has been mapped at approximately 6,005 feet farther north.
These are separate geographic features.

Because Hawaiian geographic names are often repeated, coordinates, elevation, volcano, and district are important when distinguishing individual peaks.
