Danxia Feng | Mount Danxia

Rising above the green subtropical landscape of northern Guangdong, Mount Danxia—Danxiashan (丹霞山) is a spectacular world of crimson cliffs, flat-topped rock towers, narrow ravines, caves, natural bridges, forested valleys, and winding rivers.
Unlike a conventional mountain dominated by one summit, Mount Danxia is an extensive multi-peak mountain and red-rock landscape covering roughly 292 square kilometers (113 square miles) near Shaoguan in southern China. More than 680 peaks, rock walls, pillars, fortresses, arches, and other formations rise throughout the protected area.
Its highest point is Bazhai, which reaches 619.2 meters (2,031 feet).
Mount Danxia is particularly important because it gave its name to an entire category of geology: the Danxia landform. Today, reddish sandstone landscapes with similar cliffs, towers, mesas, ravines, and isolated rock masses are described as Danxia terrain throughout China and beyond.
The mountain is both a UNESCO Global Geopark and part of the China Danxia UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it one of China’s most scientifically important as well as visually distinctive mountain landscapes.

📍 Where Is Mount Danxia?
Mount Danxia is located near Shaoguan in northern Guangdong Province, not far from China’s Nanling mountain region.
The scenic area lies approximately northeast of central Shaoguan and is easily reached from several major cities in southern China by combining high-speed rail with local transportation.
Guangzhou lies to the south, while the broader Pearl River Delta includes major cities such as Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Although Mount Danxia is modest in elevation compared with China’s great Himalayan, Kunlun, and Tibetan peaks, its landscape is extraordinarily rugged.
The highest point rises only 619.2 meters, yet the mountain contains hundreds of isolated towers and vertical cliff faces separated by river valleys and dense forests.
That complexity makes Danxiashan feel much larger and more mountainous than its absolute elevation might suggest.
🏔️ Mount Danxia Is a Mountain Complex, Not One Summit
The name Mount Danxia can be slightly misleading.
Danxiashan is not a single conical mountain with one obvious summit. Instead, it consists of hundreds of separate red-rock peaks, mesas, cliffs, walls, pillars, ravines, and isolated rock formations.
Official surveys identify Bazhai as the highest point at 619.2 meters.
Other important parts of the landscape include:

The principal Changlao Peak–Hailuo Peak–Baozhu Peak massif rises to about 409 meters.
Visitors therefore should not approach Danxiashan expecting a traditional summit ascent.
Exploring Mount Danxia is instead about hiking between viewpoints, climbing steep stone stairways, walking beneath immense red cliffs, visiting temples and rock shelters, and looking across a labyrinth of sandstone peaks.
🧭 What Is Mount Danxia’s Nearest Higher Neighbor?
A conventional Nearest Higher Neighbor (NHN) is difficult to assign to Mount Danxia because Danxiashan is primarily mapped and protected as a large scenic and geological complex rather than a single independently ranked summit.
Its recognized highest point is Bazhai at 619.2 meters.
For Mountain Field Guide purposes, it is therefore more accurate to list the NHN as not reliably established for the scenic complex rather than assign a nearby mountain that may depend on different definitions of the summit and surrounding range boundaries.
This is one of those cases where geographic accuracy is more useful than forcing a multi-peak landscape into a conventional peak-ranking system.
🪨 What Is a Danxia Landform?
Mount Danxia is the place that gave the Danxia landform its name.
Danxia landscapes develop primarily in thick deposits of reddish continental sandstone and conglomerate.
Their characteristic features can include:
- Vertical red cliffs
- Flat-topped mountains
- Isolated rock towers
- Stone pillars
- Mesa-like peaks
- Narrow ravines
- Natural arches
- Caves
- Rock shelters
- Long stone walls
- Deeply incised river valleys
These landscapes develop through a combination of sedimentation, tectonic uplift, fracturing, weathering, running water, gravity, and erosion.
The result at Mount Danxia resembles an enormous natural sculpture garden made from red stone.
🌎 How Mount Danxia Formed
The geological story of Danxiashan began during the Cretaceous Period.
Roughly 140 to 65 million years ago, rivers and other continental environments deposited enormous quantities of sand, gravel, and sediment within a basin in what is now northern Guangdong.
Over time, these sediments hardened into thick layers of sandstone and conglomerate.
Iron-bearing minerals oxidized within the rock.
The same basic chemical process responsible for rust helped create the rich red, orange, and crimson coloring that characterizes the landscape today.
Later tectonic movements uplifted and fractured the rock layers.
Once elevated, they became vulnerable to erosion.
Rainwater and streams entered fractures and joints, gradually widening them.
Softer rock eroded faster than resistant layers.
Gravity caused unsupported sections of cliff to collapse.
Millions of years of repeated weathering and erosion eventually separated once-continuous rock masses into the extraordinary collection of cliffs and towers visible today.
🧱 Why Are the Cliffs So Steep?
One of Mount Danxia’s most striking features is the contrast between relatively flat or gently sloping summits and almost vertical cliff faces.
This geometry develops partly because the sedimentary rocks occur in layers and are cut by steep fractures.
Water exploits these weaknesses.
Over time, erosion enlarges fractures until pieces of the mountain become separated into isolated blocks.
Undercutting can destabilize cliff faces until sections collapse under their own weight.
Repeated cycles of:
fracturing → erosion → undercutting → rockfall
create increasingly isolated towers and steep-sided peaks.
At the same time, resistant horizontal layers can protect portions of the summit from rapid erosion, helping preserve the characteristic flat-topped appearance of many formations.
🔬 The Birthplace of “Danxia Geomorphology”
Mount Danxia holds a special place in the history of Chinese geology.
During the early 20th century, Chinese geologists began systematically studying the region’s unusual red-rock terrain.
In 1928, geologist Feng Jinglan used the name “Danxia” for the distinctive red sedimentary strata of the area.
In 1939, geologist Chen Guoda formally introduced the concept of Danxia topography, later described as Danxia geomorphology.
The name ultimately became the standard scientific term for this distinctive category of red-bed landscape.
As researchers subsequently identified similar formations elsewhere, “Danxia” expanded from the name of one mountain area into an internationally recognized geological concept.
Few mountains have lent their names to an entire class of landform.
🌈 Mount Danxia vs. the Zhangye Rainbow Mountains
Mount Danxia is sometimes confused with the brightly striped Zhangye Danxia landscape in Gansu Province.
They are not the same place.

Both landscapes are associated with the broad concept of Danxia geology, but photographs of Zhangye’s rainbow-striped hills should not be used to illustrate Mount Danxia in Guangdong.
The classic Guangdong landscape is characterized more by towering red cliffs surrounded by lush subtropical vegetation.
🌹 Why Is It Called Danxia?
The name Danxia is associated with the appearance of the rocks.
“Dan” conveys a reddish or cinnabar-like color, while “xia” refers to glowing clouds or rosy light.
Together, the name evokes something like rosy-red clouds.
It is an especially fitting description around sunrise and sunset.
Warm light can intensify the iron-rich sandstone until the cliffs appear to glow crimson against the surrounding green forests.
This combination of red stone and dense vegetation is one of the visual signatures of Mount Danxia.
🌊 Rivers and Valleys
Water has played a central role in shaping Danxiashan.
Two important river systems associated with the landscape are the Jinjiang River and Zhenjiang River.
The Jinjiang winds among red cliffs and forest-covered peaks, creating some of Mount Danxia’s most picturesque scenery.
River erosion also continues the geological process that created the mountains.
Streams deepen valleys and attack the bases of cliffs while rainfall enters cracks higher on the rock faces.
In this sense, Danxiashan is still evolving.
Every storm, rockfall, flood, and weathering cycle slowly modifies the landscape.
🥾 Hiking Mount Danxia
Mount Danxia is much more accessible than China’s high-altitude mountaineering peaks.
Visitors do not need ropes, crampons, ice axes, or altitude acclimatization.
However, some hiking routes can still be surprisingly strenuous.
Trails include:
- Long stone stairways
- Very steep staircases
- Narrow passages
- Cliffside paths
- Exposed viewpoints
- Humid forest trails
- Short but intense climbs
Some routes climb slopes approaching vertical through stairways and secured passages.
Good footwear, adequate water, and realistic assessment of fitness are important, particularly during hot and humid weather.
🌅 Changlao Peak
Changlao Peak is one of the classic visitor areas within Mount Danxia.
The surrounding massif includes Changlao Peak, Hailuo Peak, and Baozhu Peak.
A typical hike can pass:
- Jinshi Rock Temple
- Banshan Pavilion
- Historic cliff inscriptions
- Biezhuan Temple
- Steep stairways
- Summit viewpoints
- Rock formations
- Forested valleys
The area provides one of the best introductions to Danxiashan because geology, history, religion, and scenery are all concentrated along the route.
Some longer circuits take approximately four to six hours depending on route choice and pace.
🪨 Yangyuan Mountain
The Yangyuan Mountain area is famous for some of Danxiashan’s most unusual erosional formations.
Its best-known feature is Yangyuan Stone, a tall naturally weathered rock pillar whose shape has made it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the geopark.
Nearby trails include very steep stairways and cliff routes.
The Jiujitian Ladder and sections around Ximei Village can be particularly demanding compared with the gentler sightseeing areas elsewhere in the park.
Visitors looking for a more strenuous Danxia hiking experience often include this area.
💧 Xianglong Lake
Xianglong Lake offers a completely different side of Mount Danxia.
Rather than climbing continuously over exposed rock, visitors can walk through a greener, more sheltered environment alongside water, forests, cliffs, and rock formations.
The area can provide a useful alternative for travelers who want to experience the landscape without attempting the steepest routes.
Combining Changlao Peak, Yangyuan Mountain, and Xianglong Lake reveals just how varied the Danxia landscape can be within a relatively compact area.
🛕 Temples, Villages, and Cliff Carvings
People have lived among the mountains of Danxiashan for thousands of years.
The protected landscape contains cultural features including:
- Buddhist temples
- Taoist sites
- Historic villages
- Mountain fortresses
- Ancient tombs
- Cliff inscriptions
- Rock carvings
- Traditional paths
Some cliff inscriptions date to the Tang and Song dynasties and later historical periods.
Religious communities were naturally drawn to Danxiashan’s secluded cliffs and caves.
Rock shelters provided protected locations for temples and retreats, while isolated peaks created landscapes well suited to spiritual contemplation.
The result is a mountain environment where cultural history is literally embedded in the geology.
🌿 Flora and Fauna
Mount Danxia has exceptional biological importance in addition to its geology.
Its fragmented red-rock terrain creates a natural “island effect.”
Individual peaks are often separated from one another by cliffs and valleys, producing isolated habitats where populations can evolve somewhat independently.
Cliff faces, caves, summit plateaus, river valleys, forests, shaded ravines, and exposed rock surfaces each create different environmental conditions.
That variety supports remarkable biodiversity.
Recent surveys have recorded more than 2,300 species of higher plants and thousands of animal species across the protected landscape.
Researchers continue finding organisms new to science.
🌳 Plant Life
Danxiashan’s warm, humid monsoon climate supports extensive subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest.
Plant communities also occur in unusual habitats such as:
- Cliff faces
- Rock crevices
- Isolated summits
- Moist valleys
- Caves
- River corridors
- Thin soils over sandstone
Several plants are strongly associated with the Danxia region.
Notable examples include:
- Danxia Firmiana
- Danxia viola
- Danxia orchid
- Danxia Chiritopsis
- Cliff-adapted ferns
- Selaginella
- Broadleaf evergreen forest species
- Bamboo communities
Many cliff plants survive in extremely thin, nutrient-poor soils.
Their ability to tolerate drought, heat, intense sun, and exposed rock makes them especially interesting to botanists studying adaptation to harsh habitats.
🐦 Wildlife
The protected area also supports a rich animal community.
Surveys have recorded hundreds of vertebrate species as well as extraordinary diversity among insects, spiders, fungi, and other organisms.
Habitats range from river systems and humid forest to caves and almost vertical rock walls.
Wildlife can include:
- Forest birds
- Raptors
- Bats
- Small mammals
- Snakes
- Lizards
- Frogs
- Freshwater fish
- Butterflies
- Beetles
- Spiders
The isolation created by Danxiashan’s cliffs has helped some organisms evolve into species with very restricted distributions.
In May 2026, researchers announced what park authorities described as the 58th newly recorded species discovered at Danxiashan, demonstrating that the area’s biodiversity is still being documented.
🌎 UNESCO World Heritage Status
Mount Danxia became internationally recognized for its geology long before receiving World Heritage status.
In 2004, Danxiashan became one of the early members of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.
In 2010, it became one of six major landscapes included in the China Danxia UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The World Heritage property includes Danxia landscapes representing different stages in the evolution of red-bed terrain.
The six principal areas are:
- Chishui
- Taining
- Langshan
- Danxiashan
- Longhushan
- Jianglangshan
Together they demonstrate how Danxia landscapes evolve from relatively continuous rock masses into increasingly dissected cliffs, pillars, isolated peaks, and valleys.
Mount Danxia is especially important because it is the type locality from which the entire landform takes its name.
🔗 Danxiashan and Mount Longhu
Another China Danxia World Heritage component already featured on Mountain Field Guide is Mount Longhu.
Both mountains contain reddish sandstone landscapes shaped by erosion, but their cultural histories differ.
Mount Longhu is particularly famous as one of China’s great Taoist sacred mountains.
Danxiashan is more significant as the scientific birthplace and namesake of Danxia geomorphology.
Comparing the two provides an excellent illustration of the variety possible within the same broad geological landform.
🌤️ When to Visit Mount Danxia
Mount Danxia has a humid subtropical climate.
Summers can be hot, wet, and humid, while the cooler portions of the year can make hiking more comfortable.
Rain creates both advantages and challenges.
Moist conditions deepen the contrast between the crimson cliffs and surrounding green vegetation, and mist can produce spectacular atmospheric scenery.
However, wet steps and rock surfaces may become slippery.
Visitors should check current park conditions before attempting the steeper routes, especially after heavy rainfall.
🚆 Getting to Mount Danxia
Danxiashan is considerably easier to reach than many remote Chinese mountain landscapes.
The main gateway is Shaoguan, which is connected to China’s high-speed rail network.
Visitors can travel toward Shaoguan from cities such as:
- Guangzhou
- Shenzhen
- Hong Kong
- Changsha
Local transportation then connects the city and rail stations with the Danxia Mountain scenic area.
The accessibility of Danxiashan is one reason it works particularly well for travelers interested in geology and mountain scenery but not equipped for remote trekking or high-altitude expeditions.
📸 Why Mount Danxia Is Special
Mount Danxia proves that a mountain does not need extreme elevation to be extraordinary.
Its summit reaches only 619.2 meters, yet within the surrounding 292-square-kilometer landscape are hundreds of crimson rock towers, vertical cliffs, hidden caves, forested valleys, rivers, temples, villages, and isolated ecosystems.
More importantly, Danxiashan changed the language of geology.
Scientists studying these mountains recognized a distinctive style of landscape development and eventually gave it the name Danxia geomorphology.
Today the term is applied to red-bed landscapes across China and has become internationally recognized through UNESCO.
Mount Danxia is therefore not simply another scenic Chinese mountain.
It is the place that defined an entire kind of landscape—a living geological textbook where more than 100 million years of sedimentation, uplift, erosion, weathering, and ecological adaptation remain visible in the red cliffs.
