Montgomery Peak is a rugged, high-elevation mountain in the northern White Mountains of eastern California, just across the state line from Nevada. Rising to approximately 13,436 feet, it stands above the desert landscapes of Fish Lake Valley and forms part of the dramatic ridgeline surrounding Nevada’s highest point, Boundary Peak.

Although Boundary Peak receives more attention because of its status as Nevada’s state high point, Montgomery Peak is the higher and more topographically independent mountain. 📍 Location

Montgomery Peak stands near the northern end of the White Mountains in Mono County, California. The summit lies immediately southwest of the California–Nevada state line, while neighboring Boundary Peak rises on the Nevada side in Esmeralda County.

The mountains occupy a striking transition between California’s eastern high country and the vast desert basins of western Nevada. Fish Lake Valley spreads below the eastern side of the range, while the Sierra Nevada rises beyond the valleys and ridges to the west.

Although Montgomery Peak is in California, the most common climbing routes begin on the Nevada side. Hikers typically approach through either Trail Canyon or Queen Canyon, climb Boundary Peak, and continue southwest along the connecting ridge to Montgomery Peak.

Although the mileage between the two summits is relatively short, the traverse is considerably more demanding than a simple walk along an established trail.

Trail Canyon Approach

The Trail Canyon route begins on the eastern side of the White Mountains at a trailhead around 9,000 feet.

The U.S. Forest Service describes the route to Boundary Peak as approximately 8.5 miles round trip. The first portion follows an established trail along Trail Canyon, but the maintained trail ends near a meadow at approximately 9,800 feet.

Beyond that point, hikers follow informal use trails and must identify the route toward Trail Canyon Saddle, situated around 10,800 feet.
