Rising from the vast icefields of southwestern Yukon, Mount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada and the second-highest summit in North America after Denali. At 5,959 meters (19,550 feet), it is an enormous, heavily glaciated massif whose scale is difficult to appreciate from elevation alone.

Unlike mountains defined by a single sharp pyramid, Mount Logan spreads across a sprawling summit plateau punctuated by multiple high points. Its combination of immense size, severe cold, deep snow, glaciers, crevasses, and extraordinary remoteness makes it one of North America’s great expedition mountains.

Mount Logan lies within Kluane National Park and Reserve, part of a spectacular protected landscape of mountains and ice along the Yukon–Alaska border.

🏔️ Canada’s Highest Mountain

At 5,959 meters, Mount Logan stands higher than every other summit in Canada. Only Denali, at 6,190.5 meters (20,310 feet), rises higher anywhere in North America.

The difference between the two mountains is only about 232 meters, yet they are separated by more than 620 kilometers of rugged Alaskan and Yukon wilderness. Denali is therefore Mount Logan’s Nearest Higher Neighbor (NHN) as well as its line parent.

Within Canada, Mount Logan stands well above even the other giants of the Saint Elias Mountains. Nearby Mount Saint Elias reaches 5,489 meters, while Mount Lucania, King Peak, Mount Steele, and Mount Wood are also among the country’s highest summits.

Mount Logan consequently forms the centerpiece of one of the greatest concentrations of high mountains anywhere in North America.

🗺️ Where Is Mount Logan?

Mount Logan is located in the southwestern Yukon, deep within Kluane National Park and Reserve and relatively close to the international boundary with Alaska.

The mountain belongs to the Saint Elias Mountains, which extend across parts of Yukon, Alaska, and British Columbia. This is an exceptionally rugged region where high mountains rise above immense glaciers and icefields.

Mount Logan is far removed from roads and developed visitor areas. Although travelers can explore more accessible portions of Kluane National Park from the Alaska Highway and communities such as Haines Junction, the Mount Logan massif itself lies deep within the park’s icefields.

This isolation is one of the defining characteristics of the mountain. Reaching it is an expedition in itself.

🧭 Nearest Higher Neighbor: Denali

Mount Logan’s Nearest Higher Neighbor is Denali, approximately 623 kilometers (387 miles) to the west-northwest.

Denali reaches 6,190.5 meters and is both the highest mountain in North America and Mount Logan’s parent peak.

The enormous distance separating Mount Logan from higher terrain explains its exceptional topographic isolation. It also reinforces just how dominant Logan is within the Saint Elias Mountains: there is no nearby summit that surpasses it.

Few mountains on Earth combine such great elevation, prominence, and isolation.

🪨 Geology of Mount Logan

Mount Logan belongs to an actively evolving mountain system created by powerful tectonic forces along the northwestern edge of North America.

Much of the uplift of the Saint Elias Mountains is associated with the collision of the Yakutat terrane with the North American Plate. Rather than sliding smoothly beneath the continent, this thick block of crust has been colliding with and being forced beneath North America.

The resulting compression has helped create the extraordinary relief of the Saint Elias region.

These mountains are geologically dynamic rather than ancient, heavily worn-down remnants. Uplift, earthquakes, glaciers, erosion, and tectonic deformation continue to reshape the landscape.

Ice is equally important in determining Mount Logan’s present appearance. Glaciers have carved valleys, transported enormous quantities of rock, and covered much of the mountain beneath permanent snow and ice.

🧊 A Mountain Built on an Enormous Scale

Mount Logan is particularly remarkable because it is not simply tall. It is massive.

Its summit region consists of an immense high-altitude plateau roughly 20 kilometers long, with numerous subsidiary summits rising from the massif. Several of these exceed 5,000 meters.

Among its major subsidiary peaks are:

  • Philippe Peak
  • East Peak
  • Houstons Peak
  • Prospectors Peak
  • AINA Peak
  • Russell Peak
  • Tudor Peak
  • Saxon Peak
  • Queen Peak
  • Capet Peak

Philippe Peak reaches roughly 5,920 meters, while East Peak rises to about 5,898 meters.

This collection of high summits gives Mount Logan a very different character from a mountain dominated by one isolated horn. It is better understood as a vast elevated world of ridges, plateaus, glaciers, and subsidiary peaks.

❄️ Icefields and Glaciers

Mount Logan rises amid one of the world’s greatest concentrations of ice outside the polar regions.

The Saint Elias Mountains intercept moisture-laden air moving inland from the Pacific Ocean. As this air rises over the mountains, enormous quantities of snow can fall at higher elevations.

Over time, the accumulated snow feeds the vast icefields and glacier systems surrounding Mount Logan.

Much of Kluane National Park is dominated by mountains, glaciers, and permanent ice. Large valley glaciers flow outward from the central icefields, creating a landscape that remains strongly influenced by the legacy of the Ice Age.

For climbers, this means Mount Logan is fundamentally a glacier expedition. Crevasses, snow bridges, icefalls, deep snow, and changing glacier conditions are among the mountain’s primary hazards.

🌡️ Weather and Climate

Mount Logan’s latitude, elevation, coastal influences, and enormous ice-covered surface combine to create an exceptionally severe climate.

Even during summer, conditions on the high summit plateau can resemble winter in many other mountain ranges. Temperatures can remain far below freezing, and Pacific weather systems can bring prolonged storms, heavy snow, whiteouts, and powerful winds.

Library and Archives Canada notes that average summer temperatures around Mount Logan’s summit plateau are approximately −27°C (−17°F).

Weather can also prevent aircraft from reaching climbing parties for days at a time. As a result, expeditions must carry sufficient supplies and equipment to remain self-sufficient if pickup or resupply is delayed.

The extreme cold is one reason Logan should not be underestimated simply because its standard routes are sometimes described as less technically difficult than the hardest Himalayan or Alaskan climbs.

🧗 Climbing Mount Logan

Mount Logan is a serious expedition objective intended for experienced mountaineers.

Climbers must be comfortable with:

  • Roped glacier travel
  • Crevasse rescue
  • Winter camping
  • Navigation in whiteout conditions
  • High-altitude acclimatization
  • Extreme cold
  • Sled hauling
  • Avalanche assessment
  • Extended wilderness self-sufficiency

Many expeditions access the icefields by ski-equipped aircraft and then spend several weeks traveling across glaciers and climbing toward the summit.

The combination of remoteness and difficult weather means that relatively minor problems can become serious emergencies.

King Trench Route

The King Trench is the classic approach to Mount Logan and is closely associated with the mountain’s first ascent.

The route involves a long journey through heavily glaciated terrain toward the summit plateau. Although it does not require the sustained technical climbing found on Logan’s harder ridges and faces, it presents major objective hazards.

Crevasses, storms, cold, altitude, route-finding, avalanche exposure, and the sheer length of the expedition all contribute to its difficulty.

Calling it the “normal route” should therefore never be confused with calling it easy.

📜 The Historic First Ascent

Mount Logan remained one of North America’s greatest unclimbed prizes into the early 20th century.

A joint Canadian-American expedition organized with involvement from the Alpine Club of Canada and American Alpine Club finally succeeded in 1925.

The summit team consisted of:

  • Allen Carpé
  • Norman H. Read
  • W.W. Foster
  • Andrew Taylor

Before the climbers could even begin ascending Mount Logan, they faced an extraordinary logistical challenge. The mountain was more than 200 kilometers from the transportation available to the expedition, requiring extensive overland travel and the movement of huge quantities of equipment and supplies.

After weeks in the wilderness, the six climbers reached the summit on June 23, 1925.

The entire undertaking lasted roughly 65 days and became one of the landmark expeditions in Canadian mountaineering history.

📏 Measuring Mount Logan

Determining the precise elevation of an ice-covered mountain as remote as Logan was once remarkably difficult.

In 1992, an expedition involving the Geological Survey of Canada, Geodetic Survey, Parks Canada, and Royal Canadian Geographical Society carried early GPS equipment to the summit.

Measurements taken on June 6 and June 8 produced a new official elevation of 5,959 meters.

The expedition was notable because GPS technology was still relatively new. Climbers had only limited windows each day when enough satellites were available to make the necessary observations.

Mount Logan subsequently became an important example of how satellite surveying could improve measurements of Earth’s highest and most inaccessible terrain.

🔬 Mount Logan and Climate Science

Mount Logan is more than a mountaineering destination. Its deep accumulation of ice makes it an important natural archive for climate research.

Snow falling on the summit plateau gradually becomes compressed into ice. Layer upon layer can preserve evidence of past environmental conditions, including atmospheric chemistry, dust, pollen, and trapped gases.

Scientists have therefore drilled ice cores on the mountain to study past climate.

Research on Mount Logan can help reconstruct changes affecting the North Pacific region across thousands of years, giving scientists another tool for understanding long-term climate variability.

Its high elevation and remote location make the summit ice especially valuable for this kind of research.

🌿 Flora and Fauna

The summit of Mount Logan is far too high, cold, and ice-covered to support the diverse ecosystems found at lower elevations. However, its surrounding protected landscape includes some of the richest ecological communities in northern Canada.

🌲 Plant Life

Lower elevations within Kluane National Park support forests dominated by species such as:

  • White spruce
  • Trembling aspen
  • Balsam poplar

Approaching treeline, vegetation becomes increasingly low and hardy, with willow, alder, and dwarf birch occurring in transitional areas.

Above approximately 1,400 meters, alpine tundra becomes increasingly important. Parks Canada has documented more than 200 varieties of alpine flora in Kluane.

Farther into the icefields and toward Mount Logan itself, vegetation becomes extremely sparse. At the highest elevations, permanent snow and ice dominate almost completely.

🐻 Wildlife

Wildlife is far more abundant in Kluane’s lower valleys, tundra, and mountain slopes than on the Logan massif itself.

Animals found within the greater park include:

  • Dall sheep
  • Grizzly bears
  • Black bears
  • Mountain goats
  • Moose
  • Caribou
  • Wolves
  • Wolverines
  • Lynx
  • Red foxes
  • Arctic ground squirrels

Dall sheep are particularly characteristic of the Kluane region and are among the park’s most visible large mammals.

The transition from boreal forest through alpine tundra to enormous, nearly lifeless icefields illustrates the remarkable ecological range surrounding Canada’s highest mountain.

🏞️ Kluane National Park and Reserve

Mount Logan lies within Kluane National Park and Reserve, one of Canada’s most spectacular protected wilderness areas.

Kluane joins neighboring protected lands in Alaska and British Columbia as part of the Kluane/Wrangell-St. Elias/Glacier Bay/Tatshenshini-Alsek UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Together, these protected areas preserve an extraordinary landscape of mountains, glaciers, river valleys, wildlife habitat, and immense wilderness.

Kluane also lies within the traditional territories of the Kluane First Nation and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, and Parks Canada works cooperatively with First Nations governments in managing the park.

The cultural landscape surrounding Mount Logan therefore extends far beyond modern climbing history.

🎒 Mountaineering Permits and Access

Mount Logan is not a peak where climbers can simply arrive and begin climbing.

Anyone spending time in the Icefield Ranges of Kluane National Park and Reserve must obtain a mountaineering permit. Aircraft landings within the icefields also require authorization associated with the mountaineering permitting process.

Expeditions must apply in advance, register their climbers, provide their intended route, and meet insurance requirements.

Parks Canada currently prohibits travel within the icefields between November 15 and April 9.

Regulations can change, so prospective climbers should always confirm the current requirements directly with Parks Canada rather than relying on older expedition reports.

🌎 Nearby Mountains

Mount Logan sits within an extraordinary concentration of major peaks.

To the southeast, Mount Saint Elias rises dramatically near the Yukon–Alaska boundary and the Gulf of Alaska.

Farther south, Mount Vancouver straddles the international border and is another major summit of the Saint Elias Mountains.

Mount Fairweather, on the Alaska–British Columbia border, is the highest point in British Columbia.

Together with Mount Lucania, King Peak, Mount Steele, and the many subsidiary summits of the Logan massif, these mountains create one of the grandest alpine landscapes on the continent.

⭐ Why Mount Logan Is Special

Mount Logan’s importance goes well beyond its title as Canada’s highest mountain.

It combines several extraordinary qualities in one place: enormous elevation, more than 5,000 meters of topographic prominence, nearly 623 kilometers of isolation from higher terrain, an extensive high-altitude summit plateau, immense glaciers, extreme temperatures, and a rich history of exploration and scientific research.

Its scale is perhaps its defining feature.

Mount Logan is not merely a summit rising above the Yukon. It is an entire frozen massif—a gigantic landscape within a landscape, surrounded by some of the most extensive mountain wilderness remaining in North America.

For climbers it is one of Canada’s ultimate expedition objectives. For scientists it is an archive of climate and geological change. And within the Saint Elias Mountains, it remains the unquestioned giant of the range.
