🏔️ Overview
Bairiga, also known as Ruoni, is the highest mountain in the remote Kangri Garpo Range of southeastern Tibet. Rising to 6,882 meters (22,579 feet), it towers above the heavily glaciated valleys surrounding the Ata Glacier near the boundary between Bomê and Zayü counties.
Although Bairiga is lower than the famous 7,000- and 8,000-meter giants of the central Himalayas, it is an exceptionally significant mountain. Its 2,444 meters (8,018 feet) of topographic prominence qualify it as an ultra-prominent peak, meaning it rises at least 1,500 meters above the highest saddle connecting it to any higher mountain.
The summit is also one of the most mysterious major mountains in Tibet. Few expeditions have entered its surrounding valleys, maps have historically disagreed over its elevation, and prolonged snowfall, unstable glaciers, avalanches, corniced ridges, and restricted access have repeatedly discouraged climbing attempts.

Bairiga’s isolation is measured toward Sanglung, a 7,095-meter mountain approximately 163.5 kilometers west-northwest of the summit. Elevation figures have varied historically, but 6,882 meters is now the most widely used measurement.
📍 Location
Bairiga stands in the Kangri Garpo Range of southeastern Tibet, an isolated mountain system between the eastern end of the Himalayas and the western reaches of the Hengduan Mountains.
The mountain lies near the boundary between Bomê and Zayü counties. Both are administered as part of Nyingchi in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The area is relatively close to the international frontiers with India and Myanmar, contributing to its historical isolation and complicated access.
To the north of the range, the Parlung Tsangpo flows through deep, forested valleys before eventually joining the Yarlung Tsangpo. To the south, the terrain descends through heavily eroded valleys toward the mountains adjoining northeastern India.
Bairiga rises near the head of the Ata Glacier system. The mountain’s northern slopes supply snow and ice to the North Ata Glacier, while other glaciers descend toward remote valleys surrounding the massif. The village of Lhagu, sometimes written Laigu, has served as an approach point for several reconnaissance and mountaineering expeditions.
The Kangri Garpo Range
The Kangri Garpo extends for roughly 280 kilometers across southeastern Tibet. It is sometimes treated as an eastern continuation of the Himalayas and sometimes classified as a distinct mountain range associated with the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau.
Bairiga occupies the central-eastern portion of the range and is its highest summit. The surrounding area contains dozens of peaks above 6,000 meters, many of which remain unnamed, poorly mapped, or unclimbed.
The range receives unusually high precipitation because humid air from the Indian Ocean can penetrate northward through river valleys. Unlike the arid interior of the Tibetan Plateau, the Kangri Garpo contains extensive forests, deep snowfall, and one of Tibet’s largest concentrations of maritime glaciers.

Detailed geological studies specifically describing Bairiga’s summit rocks are limited. The mountain’s structure is generally understood through the broader geology of southeastern Tibet and the Himalayan–Tibetan collision zone.
The Kangri Garpo region developed as the Indian tectonic plate moved northward and collided with Eurasia. This collision compressed and thickened the continental crust, uplifting the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau, and several associated mountain systems.
Bairiga’s dramatic modern appearance is also the result of prolonged glacial erosion. Moving ice has carved broad glacial basins, steepened ridges, excavated valleys, and produced enormous icefalls around the mountain.

Research indicates that glaciers throughout the Kangri Garpo have experienced substantial area and mass loss during recent decades, although individual glaciers have responded differently.

The summit and upper slopes of Bairiga are too cold, steep, and heavily glaciated to support meaningful plant life. Above the permanent snowline, the landscape consists almost entirely of exposed rock, snow, and moving ice.
Conditions change dramatically at lower elevations. The Kangri Garpo receives more precipitation than most of the Tibetan Plateau, allowing dense vegetation to occupy sheltered valleys and lower mountain slopes.
Regional vegetation zones include:
- Eastern Himalayan broadleaf forests at lower elevations
- Subalpine conifer forests
- Birch and rhododendron communities
- Alpine shrublands
- High-elevation grasslands and meadows
- Sparse vegetation near the permanent snowline
Pastures around places such as Kogin and Lhagu have traditionally been used for grazing. Local residents have also traveled into the mountains to collect caterpillar fungus, a highly valued natural product used in traditional medicine.
Wildlife is concentrated in the forests, meadows, and rocky alpine zones rather than on Bairiga’s upper mountain. The region’s combination of forests, glaciers, steep valleys, and relatively low human population provides habitat for alpine mammals, forest animals, and numerous mountain bird species.
Because there has been little scientific fieldwork directly on Bairiga, wildlife observed elsewhere in southeastern Tibet should not automatically be assumed to occur on the mountain itself.

Bairiga has no established hiking trail, commercial climbing route, or normal tourist approach. Reaching the mountain requires travel through remote Tibetan valleys, followed by expedition-style glacier travel.
All serious climbing activity has approached the massif through the Ata Glacier system.
North Ata Glacier Approach
The principal approach begins near Lhagu village and travels toward the North Ata Glacier. Reconnaissance teams have used grazing paths and moraine valleys to reach positions overlooking the glacier.
A 1999 Japanese reconnaissance proposed a possible line involving three major stages:
- Reaching the broad saddle separating branches of the Ata Glacier
- Climbing through the large icefall to the upper glacier
- Gaining the northeast ridge and following it toward the summit
The mountain’s enormous icefall, complex crevasses, avalanche exposure, and unstable snow make even reaching the upper ridge exceptionally dangerous.
The 2002 Reconnaissance
A three-person Japanese reconnaissance team entered the area in autumn 2002. The group explored the Ata Glacier to approximately 4,800 meters and examined possible routes for a larger expedition planned for the following year.
The 2003 Northeast Ridge Attempt
A nine-member Kobe University expedition attempted Bairiga in October 2003.
The team established:
- Base camp at approximately 4,150 meters
- Advanced base at approximately 4,250 meters
- Camp 1 at approximately 4,600 meters
- Camp 2 on an alternative line at approximately 5,250 meters
- A route toward a col at roughly 5,800 meters
The climbers initially hoped to traverse above an icefall and gain the northeast ridge. Avalanche danger made the first line unacceptable, forcing them onto a smaller branch of the Ata Glacier.
Above the 5,800-meter col, they encountered a steep rock wall protected by an enormous snow cornice. Poor visibility and ten consecutive days of snowfall prevented further exploration, and the expedition withdrew.
Expedition leader Kazumasa Hirai believed the northeast ridge might be climbable during unusually stable weather and snow conditions, particularly by a small, fast-moving team. However, the route has never been completed.
The 2007 Attempt
Kobe University climbers returned in 2007, but excessive snow and bad weather again ended the expedition. Reports from the area described periods in which 40 to 50 centimeters of snow fell each night, accompanied by frequent avalanches.
Lopchin and the 2009 Expedition
In 2009, a joint Chinese–Japanese expedition entered the Ata Glacier region. Rather than climbing Bairiga, the team targeted nearby Kangri Garpo II, now known as Lopchin.
Lopchin rises approximately 4.9 kilometers northwest of Bairiga and was measured at 6,805 meters by expedition GPS. Tibetan climbers Deqing Ouzhu and Ciren Danda reached its summit on November 5, followed by Japanese climbers Koichiro Kondo and Masanori Yazaki on November 7.
The ascent demonstrated that major summits in the massif could be reached, but Bairiga’s steeper walls, corniced northeast ridge, and more complicated route remain unsolved.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit
There is no dependable climbing season for Bairiga.
The summer monsoon brings heavy precipitation, cloud, rain, landslides, and snowfall at higher elevations. Winter and spring can produce deep snow and severe cold. Autumn may provide clearer periods after the main monsoon, which is why several expeditions have visited during October and November.
Even during autumn, however, the mountain can receive prolonged snowfall. The 2003 and 2007 expeditions were both defeated by storms, deep snow, avalanche danger, and unstable ridge conditions.
For lower-elevation travel in southeastern Tibet, late spring and early autumn may provide relatively favorable conditions. Any Bairiga expedition would need to select its timing according to current snowfall, glacier stability, road conditions, local regulations, and official permission rather than relying on a conventional climbing season.
