The Blue Ridge Mountains form one of the most recognizable sections of the Appalachian Mountains, creating a long belt of forested ridges, rounded summits, deep valleys, waterfalls, and high-elevation wilderness across the eastern United States.
Named for the bluish haze that often hangs over their distant ridgelines, the Blue Ridge stretches for more than 500 miles from the southern edge of Pennsylvania through Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and into Georgia. 📍 Location
The Blue Ridge Mountains form a northeast-to-southwest belt along the eastern side of the Appalachian system.
In the north, Blue Ridge terrain reaches into southern Pennsylvania and Maryland, including the Catoctin Mountain area. The range becomes much more prominent through Virginia, where it forms a long mountain wall between the rolling Piedmont to the east and the Great Valley of the Appalachians to the west.
Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park protects a major portion of the northern Blue Ridge. Skyline Drive follows the mountain crest through the park before the landscape continues southwest toward the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Farther south, the mountains broaden dramatically across western North Carolina. Instead of one narrow ridge, the Southern Blue Ridge becomes a complex highland containing numerous named mountain groups, massifs, valleys, and high peaks.

🔵 Why Are They Called the Blue Ridge Mountains?
The famous blue appearance of the mountains is not simply an illusion caused by distance.
Trees and other vegetation release naturally occurring volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere. One of the most important is isoprene. When these compounds react in the atmosphere, they can contribute to tiny airborne particles called aerosols.
These particles scatter light, helping create the characteristic bluish haze visible across layers of distant mountain ridges.
Moisture and atmospheric conditions also influence visibility. Human-caused air pollution can intensify haze and reduce visibility, meaning that not every hazy day in the Blue Ridge is entirely the result of natural forest emissions.
The effect is particularly striking from high overlooks, where ridge after ridge appears to fade from deep green to blue and eventually pale gray along the horizon.

The Blue Ridge Mountains expose some of the oldest rocks found within the Appalachian mountain system.
Much of the province consists of highly deformed Precambrian metamorphic rocks, including:

Ancient continental fragments, volcanic arcs, oceanic crust, and sedimentary basins were gradually assembled along eastern North America. Multiple episodes of plate collision compressed, folded, metamorphosed, faulted, and uplifted the region.
Later collisions culminated in the enormous mountain-building events that helped assemble the supercontinent Pangaea hundreds of millions of years ago.
When Pangaea eventually broke apart and the Atlantic Ocean began opening, major Appalachian mountain building largely ended. Erosion then became one of the dominant forces shaping the landscape.
Rivers, rainfall, frost, weathering, and gravity slowly removed enormous volumes of rock. Resistant formations remained as mountain ridges while valleys developed in more easily eroded material.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are therefore not simply “old mountains.” They are a modern landscape carved from extraordinarily old rocks that record several different periods of tectonic activity.
