🏔️ Overview
Hochalmspitze is one of the great high summits of the Austrian Alps. Rising to 3,360 meters (11,020 feet) in the state of Carinthia, it is the highest mountain in the Ankogel Group, a major subdivision of the Hohe Tauern. Its steep rock ridges, broad glacial slopes and commanding position above several deep Alpine valleys have earned it the traditional nickname “Tauernkönigin,” or “Queen of the Tauern.”
The name is especially fitting when Hochalmspitze is viewed from the valleys around Mallnitz or Malta. Its upper slopes rise far above the surrounding forests and alpine meadows, while glaciers and permanent snowfields brighten the mountain’s eastern and southern faces. Although it is lower than Austria’s Grossglockner, Hochalmspitze has an exceptional degree of independence, standing more than 45 kilometers from the nearest higher terrain.
Hochalmspitze is also notable for being the highest summit of the Ankogel Group and one of the most prominent mountains in Austria. Its topographic prominence is generally listed at approximately 942 meters (3,091 feet), although some databases calculate a slightly lower figure of around 936 meters. This substantial prominence gives the mountain a powerful visual presence throughout the eastern Hohe Tauern.
Unlike mountains reached by ordinary hiking trails, Hochalmspitze is a serious alpine objective. Its principal routes cross steep rock, exposed ridges, lingering snow and, depending on the chosen approach, glaciated terrain. The best-known ascent uses the Detmolder Grat, a dramatic ridge equipped with protected climbing sections. Another route approaches across the glacier and through the rocky formations known as the Steinerne Mandln.
The mountain’s landscape remains remarkably wild. During the 1970s, proposals were developed to transform parts of the Hochalmspitze massif into a glacier-skiing area. Elevation and prominence figures occasionally vary between mapping systems. Some sources give the summit elevation as 3,359.9 meters and calculate its prominence at approximately 936 meters, while Austrian maps and most general references use 3,360 meters and about 942 meters.
📍 Location
Hochalmspitze is situated in southern Austria, within the federal state of Carinthia. The mountain rises east of the village of Mallnitz and northwest of the Malta Valley, in the northern portion of the Spittal an der Drau District.
Geographically, the peak belongs to the Ankogel Group, which forms part of the Hohe Tauern in the Central Eastern Alps. Hochalmspitze stands slightly south of the principal Alpine watershed rather than directly on the main divide. Despite this position, it dominates a large section of the eastern Hohe Tauern and can be seen from numerous valleys and surrounding summits.
Several valleys radiate away from the massif. The Mallnitz Valley lies to the southwest, while the Malta and Göss valleys provide access from the east and southeast. To the north and northwest, the mountain’s ridges extend toward the Großelendkopf, Ankogel and the upper Malta Valley near the Kölnbrein Dam.
The massif overlooks several notable high-alpine landscapes:

Mallnitz is one of the most convenient communities from which to view the mountain, although many climbers approach from the Malta Valley and the Gießener Hütte. The Hochalmspitze Massif
Hochalmspitze is not a simple, isolated pyramid. Instead, it forms the highest point of a broad and complicated mountain massif containing subsidiary summits, rock towers, glaciers and connecting ridges.
The summit area has traditionally been divided into two principal high points:
- Apere Hochalmspitze: The higher, generally snow-free rocky summit carrying the main summit cross.
- Schneeige Hochalmspitze: A neighboring summit traditionally characterized by greater snow and ice cover.
The German word aper describes terrain that is free from snow, while schneeig means snowy. These names reflect the contrasting appearance of the two summit areas, although glacier retreat and changing snow conditions have altered the landscape over time.
Nearby Großelendkopf, reaching approximately 3,317 meters, was historically treated as part of the Hochalmspitze complex but is now generally recognized as a separate mountain. Ridges also connect the wider massif toward Säuleck, Ankogel and the southern Reißeck Group.
📏 Elevation & Prominence
At 3,360 meters, Hochalmspitze is among Austria’s major three-thousand-meter mountains. It is the highest summit in the Ankogel Group and the second-highest mountain associated with Carinthia after Grossglockner. Grossglockner, however, stands on the border between Carinthia and East Tyrol, while Hochalmspitze lies entirely within Carinthia.
Its elevation places it below several of the highest summits of the western Austrian Alps, but elevation alone does not fully describe its geographical importance. Hochalmspitze is separated from higher mountains by a considerable distance and a deep connecting saddle, producing both high prominence and high isolation.
Topographic Prominence
Hochalmspitze has a commonly reported prominence of approximately 942 meters. Prominence measures how far a climber would have to descend from a summit before reaching terrain connected to a higher mountain.
For Hochalmspitze, this means that the summit rises almost a vertical kilometer above the highest connecting saddle leading toward higher parts of the Alps. That figure makes it one of the more topographically independent mountains in Austria.
Some mountain databases calculate a prominence closer to 936 meters because of differences in summit elevations, saddle measurements and digital terrain models. Both figures describe the same basic reality: Hochalmspitze is a major independent summit rather than a minor point along a higher ridge.
Topographic Isolation
The mountain’s isolation is approximately 45.6 kilometers (28.3 miles). Its nearest higher neighbor is Grosses Wiesbachhorn, a 3,564-meter mountain located west-northwest of Hochalmspitze in the Glockner Group.
This unusually long distance from higher ground explains why Hochalmspitze commands such extensive views. On clear days, climbers may see across the Hohe Tauern toward the Salzburg Alps, Dolomites and Julian Alps.
Ranking Among Austrian Mountains
Lists of Austrian mountains can produce different rankings depending on whether subsidiary summits are included. When only independent mountains with a meaningful amount of prominence are counted, Hochalmspitze ranks among Austria’s most significant high summits.
It is particularly important because it is:
- The highest mountain in the Ankogel Group
- One of the highest mountains entirely within Carinthia
- One of Austria’s relatively isolated major summits
- The dominant mountain of the southeastern Hohe Tauern
Its combination of elevation, prominence and isolation makes Hochalmspitze more geographically significant than many Austrian peaks of similar or slightly greater elevation.
🪨 Geology
Hochalmspitze is built primarily from hard crystalline rocks, particularly gneiss and granitic gneiss. These rocks form part of the ancient geological foundations exposed within the Hohe Tauern’s famous Tauern Window.
The Tauern Window is an area where erosion and tectonic uplift have exposed rocks that once lay beneath higher layers of the Alps. During the formation of the Alpine mountain chain, enormous geological forces compressed, folded and uplifted these rocks. Gneiss is a metamorphic rock created when older rocks are transformed by intense heat and pressure. Its mineral bands and strong crystalline structure can be seen in many of the slabs, ridges and cliffs around Hochalmspitze. Granitic rocks within the massif originated from magma that cooled deep below the surface before being altered during later mountain-building events.
These durable rocks help produce the mountain’s characteristic appearance:
- Broad granite and gneiss slabs
- Steep rock walls
- Sharp ridges and pinnacles
- Large boulder fields
- Unusual towers and weathered formations
The rock architecture is especially apparent along the Detmolder Grat and the formations known as the Steinerne Mandln. In these areas, weathering has divided the bedrock into angular blocks, towers and narrow ridge sections.
Glacial Shaping
Glaciers have played an equally important role in shaping Hochalmspitze. During the Ice Ages, much larger bodies of ice flowed through the surrounding valleys, eroding the landscape and creating deep U-shaped troughs, cirques and steep-sided basins.
Smaller glaciers remain around the massif today, including ice fields on its eastern and southern sides. The Hochalmkees is among the best-known, although it has retreated significantly as temperatures in the Alps have risen.
Glacial movement has left behind:
- Moraines composed of rock debris
- Polished slabs of bedrock
- High glacial basins
- Meltwater streams
- Exposed areas of recently deglaciated terrain
The combination of resistant crystalline rock and continuing glacial erosion has created Hochalmspitze’s distinctive landscape of dark ridges, pale rock faces, snowfields and fractured ice.

Even established routes may involve exposed scrambling, protected climbing sections, loose rock, snow and glacier hazards. Climbers need suitable alpine experience, current route information and appropriate equipment; hiring a qualified local mountain guide is strongly advisable for anyone unfamiliar with the massif.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
The landscape surrounding Hochalmspitze changes dramatically with elevation. Approaches from the Malta Valley begin among forests, streams and alpine pastures before climbing into increasingly sparse terrain dominated by dwarf shrubs, grasslands, rock and ice.
At lower elevations, the valleys support mixed stands of spruce, larch and Swiss stone pine. Larches are especially noticeable because their soft needles turn golden before falling in autumn, while Swiss stone pines can survive for centuries in exposed high-mountain environments. Above the main forest belt, trees become shorter and more widely scattered until they disappear near the natural tree line.
Alpine meadows occupy sheltered slopes and benches where soil has accumulated. The short growing season encourages plants to flower quickly after the snow melts. Species found throughout Hohe Tauern National Park include:
- Edelweiss
- Arnica
- Alpine gentians
- Mountain avens
- Alpine roses
- Saxifrages
- Various high-altitude orchids
These plants use several adaptations to survive cold temperatures, strong ultraviolet radiation and persistent winds. Many grow close to the ground, develop dense hairs or store energy in extensive root systems. Their flowers can appear surprisingly vivid against the gray gneiss and pale glacial debris.
Higher on Hochalmspitze, vegetation becomes increasingly limited. Mosses, lichens and small cushion plants occupy cracks in the rock, while hardy pioneer species colonize recently exposed glacial ground. Near the summit ridges, however, the environment is too severe to support more than scattered patches of plant life.
The wider Hohe Tauern region provides habitat for some of the best-known animals of the European Alps. The national park identifies the Alpine ibex, chamois, marmot, golden eagle and bearded vulture as its “Big Five.” All have adaptations that allow them to live in steep, cold and seasonally harsh mountain environments.
Mammals
Chamois commonly inhabit rocky slopes, open woodland and alpine grasslands. Their strong legs and flexible hooves allow them to move across terrain that would be difficult for most other large mammals.
Alpine ibex generally favor high cliffs and broken rock. Once eliminated from much of the Alps, they were reintroduced to parts of the Hohe Tauern during the 20th century. The national park now supports a substantial ibex population.
Alpine marmots live in burrow systems beneath alpine meadows. They are most active during the warmer months and spend the winter in prolonged hibernation. Their sharp whistles often alert hikers to their presence before the animals themselves are visible.
Red deer, roe deer and foxes may be encountered in the forested valleys, although they generally remain below the high glacial zone.
Birds
The cliffs and open slopes around the Ankogel Group provide hunting territory for golden eagles. These powerful raptors use rising air currents to patrol large areas while searching for marmots and other prey.
The bearded vulture has also returned to the Hohe Tauern through a long-running Alpine reintroduction program. With an exceptionally wide wingspan, it can travel great distances between mountain valleys. National park monitoring programs also record griffon vultures and other large birds of prey within the protected area.
Ravens are frequently seen around high ridges and mountain huts. Alpine choughs may approach popular resting areas, although visitors should never feed them. Food provided by hikers can alter natural behavior and encourage birds to gather in unsuitable places.
Protecting the Alpine Environment
Hochalmspitze lies within a sensitive high-altitude ecosystem in which recovery from damage can take many years. Visitors should remain on established approaches wherever practical, avoid disturbing wildlife and carry all waste back into the valley.
Dogs should be kept under close control, particularly near grazing livestock and wild animals. Marmots, chamois and ground-nesting birds expend valuable energy when forced to flee repeatedly from people or pets.
🏔️ Field Guide Tip: Early morning and evening provide the best opportunities for observing wildlife. Move quietly, watch distant slopes with binoculars and avoid approaching animals for photographs. A calm animal seen from afar is preferable to a closer view that causes it to flee.
🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes
Hochalmspitze is a mountaineering summit rather than a conventional hiking destination. Every established summit route involves some combination of exposed rock, secured climbing, steep snow, ice or glaciated terrain.
Although steel cables and other protections have been installed on parts of the mountain, they do not turn the ascent into an ordinary recreational via ferrata. Climbers must be capable of evaluating snow and ice, moving efficiently through exposed terrain and responding to rapidly changing weather.
Approach to the Gießener Hütte
The Gießener Hütte, situated at approximately 2,215 meters, is the principal base for ascents from the south. It stands beneath Hochalmspitze in the upper Gößkar, surrounded by alpine meadows, boulder fields and views of the mountain’s southern ridges. The Austrian Alpine Club lists Hochalmspitze as one of the major objectives accessible from the hut.
Most visitors begin near the Gößkarspeicher reservoir in the Malta Valley. The approach follows forest roads and marked mountain paths, gaining roughly 550 to 600 meters before reaching the hut. Depending on the starting point and pace, the walk generally takes around 1½ to 2 hours.
The hut is a logical overnight stop because the summit day is long. Climbers normally leave well before sunrise so they can cross snowfields while they remain firm and complete exposed sections before afternoon clouds or thunderstorms develop.
Hut opening dates vary with snow, weather and staffing. Reservations are advisable during the main summer season, especially on weekends with favorable forecasts.
Detmolder Grat
The Detmolder Grat is Hochalmspitze’s best-known ridge route. It follows the mountain’s southwest ridge and combines high-alpine mountaineering with protected climbing sections.
From the Gießener Hütte, climbers travel toward the Lassacher Winkelscharte, crossing rough moraine, boulder fields and, depending on seasonal conditions, snow or ice. The route then climbs onto the ridge and follows its increasingly exposed crest toward the summit.
The protected sections are commonly rated up to via ferrata grade C, with additional scrambling and climbing around UIAA grade I to II. Some sections contain steel cables, stemples or anchors, but substantial stretches still require independent movement over exposed rock. The ridge is long, and snow or verglas can make otherwise manageable sections considerably harder.
Principal hazards include:
- Loose rock and unstable blocks
- Exposed ridge traverses
- Steep snow or ice during the approach
- Sudden weather deterioration
- Residual snow covering cables or footholds
- Fatigue during the long descent
- Route-finding difficulties in cloud
A helmet, harness and suitable protected-climbing equipment are normally carried. Crampons, an ice axe, rope and glacier-rescue equipment may also be necessary according to the route and current conditions.
The Detmolder Grat is often considered safer from rockfall than parts of the southeastern route because sections have been relocated onto firmer rock as the glaciers have retreated. It nevertheless remains a serious and committing ascent.
Rudolstädter Weg and Steinerne Mandln
The historic normal route is the Rudolstädter Weg, which approaches the summit by way of the Trippkees and the remarkable rock formations known as the Steinerne Mandln.
From the Gießener Hütte, the route crosses glacially sculpted ground toward the Trippkees. Climbers then negotiate steep snow, ice and protected rock before reaching the southeastern ridge. Above the Steinerne Mandln, the route continues across broken rock toward the summit.
Although sometimes described as the easier alternative to the Detmolder Grat, it should not be regarded as easy. Glacier retreat has altered the transition between the Trippkees and the rock. Sections that were once reached across snow may now involve hard ice, loose debris or awkward gaps between the glacier and the mountain.
Thawing permafrost has also contributed to increased rockfall around the Steinerne Mandln. Recent climbers have sometimes chosen to use the Detmolder Grat in both directions rather than descend through the more unstable southeastern terrain. In August 2025, information attributed to the Gießener Hütte recommended completing the traverse in the reverse direction—Steinerne Mandln to the summit and down the Detmolder Grat—to reduce exposure to rockfall during warmer afternoon conditions. Advice may change as the glacier and access points continue to evolve.
The route may require:
- Crampons and an ice axe
- Glacier travel and crevasse-rescue skills
- Protected-climbing equipment
- A rope for difficult transitions
- The ability to rappel or provide a belay
- Confident movement on steep, exposed rock
Climbers should contact the Gießener Hütte or a qualified local guide for current information rather than relying solely on older descriptions or downloaded GPS tracks.
Hochalmspitze Traverse
A traditional ascent combines the two principal southern ridges into a complete traverse. Climbers may ascend the Detmolder Grat and descend by the Rudolstädter Weg, or reverse that direction when conditions make an early passage through the Steinerne Mandln preferable.
The full circuit is a demanding undertaking. Published descriptions commonly estimate around 12 to 14 kilometers, approximately 1,700 meters of ascent from the reservoir area and as much as 10 to 12 hours of travel, depending on the exact starting point and conditions. (Österreichs Wanderdörfer)
The traverse requires much more than physical fitness. Climbers must remain focused during a long summit day, manage equipment changes efficiently and retain enough energy for a complicated descent.
Routes from the North
Hochalmspitze can also be approached from the northern side of the massif. One long route begins near the Osnabrücker Hütte, follows the Großelend Valley and crosses glaciated terrain toward the Preimlscharte and Hochalmkees.
This approach provides a wilder and more remote experience than the southern routes. It also requires glacier equipment, careful navigation and considerable endurance. Climbers may use it as part of a longer crossing between the northern and southern sides of the Ankogel Group.
Another glacial approach begins near the Villacher Hütte and reaches the mountain by way of the Hochalmkees. Retreating ice, crevasses and changing connections between snow and rock make up-to-date local knowledge particularly important on these less frequently traveled routes.
Technical Climbing Routes
Hochalmspitze has several more difficult ridge and face routes intended for experienced alpine climbers.
The South Pillar combines hiking, glacier travel, traditional climbing and protected ridge terrain. Sections are graded approximately UIAA V, depending on the chosen line. The route is valued for its solid rock and dramatic setting but requires a full range of alpine skills.
The Winterleitengrat provides another long and committing ridge climb. Although technically moderate in places, it involves sustained movement through complex terrain and should only be attempted by climbers capable of moving quickly and safely on an unprotected Alpine ridge. (Bergsteigen.com)
Other routes climb pillars, gullies and mixed terrain around the massif. Conditions may change substantially from year to year as snowfields shrink and previously frozen rock becomes unstable.
Hiking Without Climbing the Summit
Visitors do not need to climb Hochalmspitze to experience the mountain. The hike to the Gießener Hütte offers close views of the massif without requiring travel onto the technical summit ridges.
Other marked paths explore the Gößkar and nearby alpine basins. These lower routes still require sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing and awareness of mountain weather, but they are more suitable for experienced hikers who do not possess glacier or climbing skills.
🌤️ Best Time to Visit
The principal season for climbing Hochalmspitze generally extends from mid-summer into early autumn, most often from July through early September. Exact timing depends on snowfall, glacier conditions, temperatures and the opening period of the mountain huts.
Early Summer
During June and early July, substantial snow may remain on the approaches and ridges. Firm morning snow can make certain sections easier, but hidden gaps, cornices and covered cables create additional hazards.
Crevasses may be concealed by snow bridges, and climbers must be able to judge whether those bridges remain strong enough to cross. Avalanche danger can also persist after heavy late-season snowfall.
Midsummer
July and August usually provide the most dependable access, staffed huts and the longest daylight. They are also the busiest months.
Warm conditions can increase rockfall, particularly later in the day when ice binding loose rock begins to melt. Afternoon thunderstorms are another major concern. Early departures are essential so exposed ridges can be completed before clouds build.
Early Autumn
Late August and early September can bring stable weather, clear air and fewer climbers. However, glacial ice may be more exposed after the summer snow has melted. The transition from the Trippkees to the rock can become especially difficult late in the season.
Fresh snowfall may arrive at any time. Even a thin coating can conceal holds, cover route markings and create dangerous verglas on the ridge.
Winter and Spring
Hochalmspitze is also approached during the ski-mountaineering season, but winter and spring ascents involve avalanche terrain, glacier hazards and rapidly changing snow conditions. They are appropriate only for highly experienced ski mountaineers or guided parties.
For hikers whose objective is the Gießener Hütte rather than the summit, the staffed summer season generally offers the safest and most convenient conditions.

Check the Alpine forecast, freezing level, wind speed and recent precipitation—not just the weather symbol for the nearest town. Confirm route conditions directly with the hut shortly before setting out.

Hochalmspitze stands within one of Austria’s most extensive high-mountain landscapes. Climbers and visitors can combine a trip to the massif with other summits, mountain huts and attractions around Mallnitz and the Malta Valley.
Großelendkopf
The Großelendkopf, approximately 3,317 meters high, rises immediately northwest of Hochalmspitze. It was historically regarded as part of the Hochalmspitze summit complex but is now generally treated as a separate mountain.
Its ridges and glaciers contribute to the massive appearance of Hochalmspitze when viewed from the north and west. Routes on Großelendkopf are serious alpine undertakings rather than ordinary hikes.
Ankogel
At 3,252 meters, Ankogel is another major summit of the Ankogel Group. It lies northwest of Hochalmspitze and is one of the historically important climbing mountains of the Eastern Alps.

Säuleck
Säuleck, rising to approximately 3,086 meters, stands south of Hochalmspitze. Its established route is generally less technical than the Hochalmspitze summit climbs, but it remains a long and strenuous high-mountain objective.
The mountain is often considered a useful progression for hikers developing experience on three-thousand-meter peaks before attempting more technical glaciated summits.
Malta High Alpine Road
The Malta High Alpine Road climbs through the upper Malta Valley toward the Kölnbrein reservoir. The road passes waterfalls, steep valley walls and high-alpine scenery before reaching one of Austria’s largest dams.
Seasonal opening dates and access restrictions vary according to snow and road conditions.
Kölnbrein Dam
The Kölnbrein Dam forms a striking contrast with the surrounding wilderness. The enormous curved structure impounds the Kölnbrein Reservoir beneath the high peaks of the eastern Hohe Tauern.
An observation platform known as the Airwalk extends from the dam, while the visitor area includes exhibitions explaining hydroelectric power and the construction of the reservoir. Walks along the water provide views toward several remote valleys and three-thousand-meter summits. (Verbund)
