Spitzmauer is a striking limestone mountain in the Totes Gebirge of Upper Austria. Rising to 2,446 meters (8,025 feet), it is the second-highest mountain in the Totes Gebirge, surpassed only by nearby Großer Priel at 2,515 meters.

Standard Route via Prielschutzhaus
The most frequently used approach begins near Hinterstoder and climbs toward the Prielschutzhaus, a mountain hut at approximately 1,420 meters.
From the Prielschutzhaus, the marked route heads toward the Klinserschlucht before continuing through rugged limestone terrain toward the western side of Spitzmauer.
The normal summit route reaches the Meisenbergsattel, west of the mountain, before ascending the west flank over a mixture of alpine ground, rubble, limestone slabs, and rocky steps.

Their ascent occurred during the formative period of Alpine exploration, when many mountains of the Eastern Alps were being systematically climbed and documented for the first time.
The mountain’s dramatic east wall remained a much more formidable challenge. In 1906, Robert Damberger and Hans Kirchmaier completed the first known passage through the east face.
The development of mountain huts, marked trails, climbing routes, and eventually via ferratas transformed access to Spitzmauer during the twentieth century, but the mountain remains a substantial Alpine undertaking.
✈️ The 1942 Aircraft Crash
Spitzmauer is also associated with a tragic episode from the Second World War.
On March 20, 1942, a German military Junkers Ju 52 aircraft struck the mountain while flying in poor visibility. The aircraft was traveling from Wiener Neustadt toward Munich when it crashed into Spitzmauer.
All four crew members were killed.
Because of deep snow and the remote high-mountain location, the wreck was not discovered until May. Recovery operations followed, although portions of the aircraft remained on the mountain.
A memorial near the area commemorates the accident.
The event provides a sobering reminder of the difficulties created by fog and poor visibility in the rugged limestone terrain of the Totes Gebirge.
