The Cathedral Range is a compact but spectacular subrange of the Sierra Nevada in California. Rising immediately south of Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park, the range is characterized by sharp granite spires, broad alpine ridges, glacially carved basins, high mountain lakes, and some of Yosemiteβs most recognizable High Sierra scenery.
The range takes its name from Cathedral Peak, whose steep granite summit resembles the spire of a cathedral. Other prominent features include Unicorn Peak, Echo Peaks, Matthes Crest, Vogelsang Peak, Fletcher Peak, Mount Maclure, and Mount Lyell.

The Cathedral Range lies in the central Sierra Nevada of eastern California, primarily within the high country of Yosemite National Park.
Its northern end rises immediately south of Tuolumne Meadows, one of Yosemite’s largest and best-known alpine meadow systems. From there, the mountains extend generally south and southeast toward the much higher summit of Mount Lyell.
The range separates portions of the upper Tuolumne River drainage from headwaters associated with the Merced River system. Lyell Canyon lies along its eastern side, while a complex landscape of alpine basins, lakes, valleys, and ridges extends westward toward the interior of Yosemite.

The Cathedral Range is fundamentally a granitic landscape formed from the deep roots of an ancient volcanic system.
During the Mesozoic Era, an oceanic tectonic plate known as the Farallon Plate was subducting beneath western North America. This process generated enormous quantities of magma beneath what would become the Sierra Nevada.
Much of that magma never reached the surface.
Instead, it cooled slowly several miles underground, producing vast bodies of intrusive igneous rock called plutons. Collectively, these plutons form the Sierra Nevada Batholith.
Most of Yosemite’s granitic rocks formed tens of millions of years ago, particularly during the Cretaceous Period.
One of the most distinctive rocks in the Tuolumne Meadows region is Cathedral Peak Granodiorite.
This rock often contains unusually large crystals of potassium feldspar, some measuring several inches long. The National Park Service notes that Cathedral Peak Granodiorite dominates portions of Yosemite’s high country near Tuolumne Meadows.
It forms part of the Tuolumne Intrusive Suite, one of several major groups of related plutons exposed within Yosemite.
Millions of years of uplift and erosion eventually stripped away the overlying volcanic and sedimentary material, revealing the granitic rocks that had crystallized deep underground.

Ice played an equally important role in shaping the modern Cathedral Range.
During repeated Ice Age glaciations, enormous masses of ice flowed through the Sierra Nevada. These glaciers widened valleys, excavated basins, polished granite surfaces, transported huge boulders, and sharpened mountain ridges.
Glaciation created much of the landscape visitors see today, including:

Nearby Lyell Canyon is one of Yosemite’s clearest examples of a broad U-shaped valley carved by glacial ice.

Lyell Glacier
Lyell Glacier developed below Mount Lyell and was historically Yosemite National Park’s largest modern glacier.
It has retreated dramatically since scientists began documenting it in the nineteenth century.
Research by the National Park Service eventually showed that the remaining Lyell ice had stopped moving sufficiently to meet the definition of an active glacier. The remaining ice is therefore better described as stagnant ice or permanent snow and ice rather than a functioning glacier.
The disappearance of active glacial movement at Mount Lyell provides one of the clearest examples of environmental change in Yosemite’s high country.

The Cathedral Range crosses both subalpine and alpine ecological zones.
At lower elevations around Tuolumne Meadows and the Cathedral Lakes approach, lodgepole pine forests alternate with open meadows, streams, granite slabs, and wetlands.
Higher on the mountains, growing conditions become increasingly severe.
The National Park Service places the beginning of Yosemite’s alpine zone at approximately 9,500 feet (2,900 meters). Above this elevation, long snowy winters, short growing seasons, strong winds, exposed rock, and cold temperatures limit the size and distribution of vegetation.
Trees become sparse and eventually disappear.
Low-growing alpine plants survive in sheltered cracks, meadows, and patches of thin soil between expanses of granite and talus.
Wildlife of the broader Yosemite high country includes mule deer, marmots, pikas, coyotes, black bears, Clark’s nutcrackers, and many other mountain-adapted species.
One particularly important conservation story involves the Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep.
In March 2015, bighorn sheep were restored to Yosemite’s Cathedral Range after having disappeared from the park for many decades. Their return helped reestablish a native large mammal that historically inhabited Yosemite’s rugged alpine terrain.
Interestingly, John Muir’s 1869 ascent of Cathedral Peak occurred during the period when he was observing and writing about the wild sheep of the Sierra Nevada.

Mount Lyell

For most hikers, summer through early autumn provides the easiest access to the Cathedral Range.
The major limitation is Tioga Road, which provides access to Tuolumne Meadows and the Cathedral Lakes trailhead.
Heavy winter snow normally closes the road for part of the year. Opening dates vary considerably depending on the previous winter’s snowpack.
Once the high country becomes accessible, conditions can still vary.
Early Summer
Snow may remain on high passes, shaded slopes, and alpine trails. Stream crossings can also be higher during snowmelt.
Mid-Summer
July and August often provide the most reliable hiking access, although afternoon thunderstorms and lightning are important hazards in exposed alpine terrain.
Early Autumn
September can offer cooler temperatures, reduced insects, and excellent hiking conditions.
However, early-season snowstorms are possible, and nights at high elevations can become very cold.
Winter and Spring
The Cathedral Range becomes a snow-covered wilderness requiring winter travel skills, navigation experience, and avalanche awareness.
Road access is also greatly restricted while Tioga Road is closed.

Mount Dana rises northeast of Tuolumne Meadows near Tioga Pass.
