Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level, rising to an officially recognized elevation of 8,849 meters (29,032 feet). Straddling the international border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, Everest forms part of the Mahalangur Himal subrange of the Himalayas and has become the world’s most famous mountain.

Known as Sagarmatha in Nepal and Chomolungma (Qomolangma) in Tibet, Mount Everest has inspired explorers, scientists, photographers, and mountaineers for generations. Its immense height, dramatic glaciated slopes, and extreme environment make it both a symbol of human achievement and one of nature’s greatest challenges.

Although Everest is renowned for mountaineering, it is far more than a climbing destination. The mountain plays an important role in Himalayan culture, religion, geology, hydrology, and environmental science. Mount Everest stands on the crest of the Great Himalaya Range, precisely along the border between Nepal’s Solukhumbu District and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

The mountain lies within two internationally recognized protected areas:

  • Sagarmatha National Park (Nepal), a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1976.
  • Qomolangma National Nature Preserve (China), one of the world’s largest protected mountain reserves.

Everest rises above the Khumbu Valley in Nepal and the Rongbuk Valley in Tibet, with its immense glaciers draining into several major Himalayan river systems.

Nearby famous peaks include:

📏 Elevation, Prominence & Isolation

Mount Everest is unique among the world’s mountains because it is the highest point on Earth’s surface above mean sea level.

Elevation

The mountain’s official elevation is:

8,849 meters (29,032 feet)

This height was jointly announced by Nepal and China in 2020 following a comprehensive survey using modern GPS technology and ground-penetrating radar to account for the depth of the summit snow.

Prominence

Everest has a topographic prominence of 8,849 meters, the greatest of any mountain on Earth. Since no higher summit exists, every route from Everest’s summit descends to sea level before reaching a higher point—making its prominence equal to its elevation.

Isolation

Everest also possesses the world’s greatest topographic isolation, approximately 40,008 kilometers (24,860 miles). The nearest higher point does not exist because Everest is Earth’s highest mountain.

These three measurements—elevation, prominence, and isolation—make Mount Everest unique among all mountains on the planet.


🏷️ What’s in a Name?

Long before it became internationally known as Mount Everest, the mountain had names deeply rooted in local culture and tradition.

Sagarmatha

In Nepal, the mountain is called Sagarmatha, a name commonly translated as “Forehead of the Sky” or “Peak of Heaven.” The name was officially adopted by the Government of Nepal during the twentieth century.

Chomolungma (Qomolangma)

In Tibet, Everest has long been known as Chomolungma (also spelled Qomolangma), meaning “Goddess Mother of the World.” The name appears in Tibetan historical records dating back several centuries and reflects the mountain’s deep spiritual significance.

Mount Everest

The English name was proposed in 1865 by the Royal Geographical Society, honoring Sir George Everest, the British Surveyor General of India. Although George Everest himself preferred that local names be used whenever possible, the name Mount Everest became internationally established and remains the most widely recognized today.


🏔️ Field Guide Tip

Although Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, it is not the tallest mountain when measured from base to summit. That distinction belongs to Mauna Kea in Hawaii, which rises more than 10,200 meters (33,500 feet) from its base on the Pacific Ocean floor. Likewise, Chimborazo in Ecuador is the point on Earth’s surface farthest from the planet’s center due to the Earth’s equatorial bulge. Understanding these distinctions helps explain why Everest holds one of several remarkable “highest mountain” records rather than all of them.


🏔️ Physical Geography

Mount Everest dominates the skyline of the eastern Himalayas and forms the centerpiece of one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes on Earth. Rising nearly 3,700 meters (12,100 feet) above the Khumbu Valley in Nepal, its massive pyramid-shaped summit is surrounded by towering neighbors, deep glacial valleys, and some of the highest passes on the planet.

Everest is part of the Mahalangur Himal, a subrange of the Himalayas that also includes several of the world’s highest mountains, including Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Pumori, and Ama Dablam.

The mountain has three principal ridges:

  • Southeast Ridge – The standard climbing route from Nepal, first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
  • Northeast Ridge – The classic route from Tibet, used by many early British expeditions.
  • West Ridge – A much more technical and rarely climbed route.

These ridges converge at Everest’s snow-covered summit pyramid, creating one of the most recognizable mountain profiles in the world.


🪨 Geology

Mount Everest owes its existence to the ongoing collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, one of the most powerful tectonic events in Earth’s history.

Around 50 million years ago, the Indian Plate began colliding with Eurasia after the closure of the ancient Tethys Ocean. Instead of one plate sliding beneath the other, both continental plates crumpled and thickened, forcing enormous sections of crust upward to form the Himalayas.

Remarkably, the summit of Mount Everest is composed primarily of marine limestone, known as the Qomolangma Formation. These rocks were once deposited as sediments on the floor of the Tethys Ocean more than 450 million years ago.

Below the summit are additional layers of:

  • Limestone
  • Dolomite
  • Marble
  • Schist
  • Gneiss
  • Granite intrusions

These rock layers provide dramatic evidence that the highest point on Earth was once beneath an ancient tropical sea.

Although erosion from glaciers and weather constantly wears the mountain away, tectonic uplift continues today. Scientists estimate that the Himalayas are still rising by several millimeters each year.


❄️ Glaciers

Mount Everest is surrounded by an extensive network of glaciers that shape both the landscape and the climbing routes.

Khumbu Glacier

Flowing down Everest’s southern slopes into Nepal, the Khumbu Glacier is one of the world’s best-known mountain glaciers.

It originates in the Western Cwm beneath Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse before descending through the famous Khumbu Icefall.

Rongbuk Glacier

On the Tibetan side, the Rongbuk Glacier drains Everest’s northern slopes.

This glacier provides access to the North Base Camp and has served as the starting point for many historic British and Chinese expeditions.

Kangshung Glacier

Less visited than the Khumbu and Rongbuk glaciers, the Kangshung Glacier flows from Everest’s remote eastern face in Tibet and borders one of the mountain’s steepest and least climbed aspects.

Together, these glaciers feed major Himalayan river systems that ultimately supply freshwater to millions of people across Asia.


🧊 The Khumbu Icefall

Perhaps no feature on Mount Everest is more famous—or more dangerous—than the Khumbu Icefall.

Located immediately above the South Base Camp, the icefall is a chaotic river of moving ice that tumbles down the mountain from the Western Cwm.

Its constantly shifting terrain contains:

  • Towering seracs
  • Deep crevasses
  • Ice cliffs
  • Unstable snow bridges

Because the glacier is continually moving, climbers rely on ropes and aluminum ladders installed by specialized Icefall Doctors each climbing season.

The Khumbu Icefall is widely regarded as one of the most hazardous sections of the South Col route due to the constant risk of collapsing ice and avalanches.


🏔️ Major Features of Mount Everest

Several iconic geographical features define the mountain.

South Col

At 7,906 m (25,938 ft), the South Col is a broad saddle between Everest and Lhotse.

It serves as the location of Camp IV, the final high camp before summit attempts from Nepal.

North Col

The North Col, at approximately 7,020 m (23,031 ft), lies between Everest and Changtse.

It marks the gateway to the Northeast Ridge climbing route.

Western Cwm

The Western Cwm is a broad glacial valley enclosed by Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse.

Although relatively gentle in gradient, it can become extremely hot during sunny weather because its surrounding mountains reflect and trap solar radiation.

Hillary Step

For decades, the Hillary Step was one of the most famous obstacles on the Southeast Ridge.

This near-vertical rock step stood just below the summit until it was largely altered by the 2015 Nepal earthquake, leaving a less prominent rocky slope that climbers now traverse.

Mount Everest experiences one of the harshest climates on Earth.

Conditions vary dramatically with the seasons.

Winter (December–February)

  • Temperatures below −40°C (−40°F)
  • Hurricane-force jet stream winds
  • Heavy snow accumulation
  • Virtually no climbing activity

Spring (April–May)

The primary climbing season.

Conditions typically feature:

  • More stable weather
  • Reduced winds
  • Warmer temperatures
  • Longer daylight

Summer (June–August)

The South Asian monsoon brings:

  • Heavy snowfall
  • Cloud cover
  • Increased avalanche danger
  • Limited climbing opportunities

Autumn (September–November)

A secondary climbing season characterized by:

  • Cooler temperatures
  • Fewer expeditions
  • Excellent visibility

Even during the climbing season, summit temperatures frequently remain below −20°C (−4°F), while winds near the summit can exceed 160 km/h (100 mph).


🌬️ The Death Zone

Above approximately 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) lies the infamous Death Zone.

At this altitude:

  • Atmospheric pressure is only about one-third of that at sea level.
  • Oxygen levels are insufficient to sustain human life for extended periods.
  • The body gradually deteriorates despite acclimatization.

Common dangers include:

  • High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)
  • High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)
  • Frostbite
  • Severe dehydration
  • Exhaustion
  • Impaired decision-making

For this reason, climbers aim to spend as little time as possible above 8,000 meters during summit attempts.


🏔️ Field Guide Tip

One of the most surprising facts about Mount Everest is that its summit is made of ancient marine limestone containing fossilized sea creatures. The highest point on Earth was once part of the floor of the Tethys Ocean, providing spectacular evidence of the immense tectonic forces that continue to build the Himalayas today.

🌿 Flora

Although Mount Everest is best known for its snow-covered summit, its lower slopes support a remarkable variety of plant life. As elevation increases, distinct ecological zones give way to one another, creating one of the world’s most dramatic transitions from temperate forests to permanent ice.

Lower Forests (2,500–3,500 m / 8,200–11,500 ft)

The lower valleys of the Khumbu region are covered by lush Himalayan forests, including:

  • Himalayan Pine
  • Blue Pine
  • Himalayan Fir

  • Silver Fir
  • Birch
  • Juniper

In spring, these forests burst into color as rhododendrons bloom. Nepal alone is home to more than 30 species of rhododendron, many of which can be seen along the Everest Base Camp Trek.

Subalpine Zone (3,500–4,500 m / 11,500–14,800 ft)

As the forests thin, hardy shrubs and alpine vegetation become dominant.

Only specially adapted species survive, including:

These plants withstand intense ultraviolet radiation, freezing temperatures, and strong winds.

Above the Snowline

Above approximately 5,800–6,000 meters (19,000–19,700 feet), permanent snow and glaciers dominate the landscape.

Virtually no vascular plants survive in this environment, although microscopic algae and bacteria have been found living on snow and ice.

Perhaps the most famous bird is the Yellow-billed Chough, which has been observed flying higher than 8,000 meters, making it one of the highest-flying birds on Earth.

Much of Mount Everest’s southern side lies within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1976.

Covering approximately 1,148 square kilometers (443 square miles), the park protects:

🧭 The History of Mount Everest: Discovery, Exploration & First Ascents

The history of Mount Everest is a story of scientific discovery, extraordinary perseverance, and some of the greatest achievements in the history of exploration. Long before it became known as the world’s highest mountain, Everest was revered by the people who lived in its shadow. Today, it stands as perhaps the most recognizable mountain on Earth, with a rich history spanning centuries of exploration, surveying, and mountaineering.


🏔️ Before Western Exploration

For thousands of years, Mount Everest held deep cultural and spiritual significance for the peoples of the Himalayas.

In Tibet, the mountain has long been known as Chomolungma (Qomolangma), meaning “Goddess Mother of the World.” It appears in Tibetan texts dating back several centuries and is regarded as a sacred mountain within Tibetan Buddhism.

In Nepal, the mountain is known as Sagarmatha, commonly translated as “Forehead of the Sky” or “Peak of Heaven.” While this official Nepali name was adopted in the twentieth century, the mountain had long been revered by local Sherpa communities, who viewed it as part of a sacred Himalayan landscape.

Long before European explorers arrived, local traders, pilgrims, and yak caravans had crossed nearby Himalayan passes, living and traveling beneath Everest’s towering slopes.

📐 The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India

The scientific discovery of Mount Everest began during the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, one of the most ambitious surveying projects ever undertaken.

Beginning in 1802, British surveyors worked their way across the Indian subcontinent, measuring the heights and positions of thousands of mountains using massive theodolites and sophisticated trigonometric calculations.

Because Nepal remained closed to foreigners, survey teams were forced to take measurements from hundreds of kilometers away across the plains of northern India.

In 1847, surveyors identified a mountain known simply as Peak XV, which appeared taller than every other known summit.


📏 Identifying the World’s Highest Mountain

In 1852, Indian mathematician and surveyor Radhanath Sikdar, working for the Survey of India, calculated that Peak XV was likely the highest mountain on Earth.

After several years of verification, the Survey of India officially announced in 1856 that Peak XV had an elevation of:

29,002 feet (8,840 meters)

This remarkable measurement was astonishingly accurate given the technology of the time and remained accepted for more than a century.


🏷️ Why Is It Called Mount Everest?

In 1865, the Royal Geographical Society officially named Peak XV Mount Everest in honor of Sir George Everest, who had served as Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843.

Ironically, George Everest himself opposed naming mountains after individuals and preferred that local names be used whenever possible. Nevertheless, the name Mount Everest became internationally recognized and remains the most widely used name today.


🗺️ Early Expeditions

For decades, Nepal remained closed to foreign explorers, so all early attempts to reach Everest came from the Tibetan side.

1921 Reconnaissance Expedition

Led by Charles Howard-Bury, the British expedition became the first to explore the mountain closely.

Members mapped:

  • Rongbuk Glacier
  • North Col
  • Northeast Ridge

They also identified possible climbing routes that would guide future expeditions.


1922 British Expedition

The following year saw the first serious attempt to climb Everest.

Achievements included:

  • First humans above 8,000 meters
  • Multiple summit attempts
  • Use of supplemental oxygen

Tragically, an avalanche killed seven Sherpa climbers, marking the first recorded fatalities on Mount Everest.


🧗 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine

Perhaps no chapter in Everest’s history has inspired more fascination than the 1924 expedition.

British climbers George Mallory and Andrew “Sandy” Irvine made a summit attempt on 8 June 1924.

The pair were last seen climbing high on the Northeast Ridge before disappearing into clouds.

Whether they reached the summit before their deaths remains one of mountaineering’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

Discovery of Mallory

In 1999, George Mallory’s remarkably well-preserved body was discovered at approximately 8,155 meters (26,760 feet).

Although many questions were answered, no conclusive evidence was found to determine whether Mallory and Irvine had reached the summit before their fatal descent.

The search for Irvine’s camera—thought by some to potentially contain photographic evidence of a summit—continues to intrigue historians and climbers.


🇳🇵 Nepal Opens Its Borders

Following World War II, political changes transformed Himalayan exploration.

In 1950, Nepal opened its borders to foreign climbers for the first time.

This allowed expeditions to approach Everest from the south via the Khumbu Valley, a route that would ultimately prove more practical than the northern approach through Tibet.


🏆 The First Successful Ascent (1953)

The most famous chapter in Everest’s history occurred during the 1953 British Mount Everest Expedition, led by Colonel John Hunt.

After weeks of acclimatization and route preparation, two summit teams were selected.
