K2 is the second-highest mountain in the world, rising to 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) along the border between Pakistan and China. Located in the Baltoro Muztagh of the Karakoram, it is the highest mountain in Pakistan, the highest summit in the Karakoram, and the tallest mountain outside the Himalayas.

Only Mount Everest stands higher.

Although Everest claims the world elevation record, K2 has a reputation as the more technically demanding mountain. Its steep ridges, exposed climbing routes, powerful storms, extreme altitude, and hazardous ice formations have made it one of the most formidable objectives in mountaineering.

The mountain is commonly called the “Savage Mountain,” a nickname associated with American climber George Bell following a difficult 1953 expedition. Its stark pyramid rises dramatically above the Godwin-Austen Glacier and forms the centerpiece of one of Earth’s greatest concentrations of high mountains.

Despite its alternative name, Mount Godwin-Austen, the mountain was not named after two surveyors. The name honors one person: Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen, a British surveyor and geographer who explored the Karakoram during the nineteenth century.

📍 Location

K2 stands near the northern end of the Baltoro Glacier region in the central Karakoram.

The summit lies along the boundary between Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan and China’s Xinjiang region. Most expeditions approach from the Pakistani side, traveling through Skardu and the village of Askole before trekking into the Baltoro Glacier system.

The mountain belongs to the Baltoro Muztagh, an exceptionally high section of the Karakoram that includes several of the world’s most prominent peaks.

K2 has approximately 4,020 meters of topographic prominence, reflecting the enormous elevation difference between its summit and the highest connecting saddle leading toward higher terrain.

🧭 Why Is It Called K2?

The name K2 originated during nineteenth-century surveying of the Karakoram.

In 1856, British surveyor Thomas George Montgomerie observed distant Karakoram peaks and identified them using the letter K, for Karakoram, followed by a number.

👤 Why Is K2 Also Called Mount Godwin-Austen?

Mount Godwin-Austen is an alternative name honoring Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen, a British surveyor, geographer, and naturalist.

Godwin-Austen explored the Karakoram and surveyed portions of the Baltoro Glacier region during the nineteenth century. His work helped establish the locations and elevations of major mountains in the area, including K2.

The nearby Godwin-Austen Glacier also bears his name.

The mountain name was proposed in recognition of his contributions, but it never replaced K2 as the internationally recognized name.

Importantly, “Godwin-Austen” is one hyphenated surname. It does not refer to two separate surveyors named Godwin and Austen.

🪨 Geology

K2 forms part of the vast mountain system created and reshaped by the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

As the Indian plate moved northward into Eurasia, tremendous pressure compressed, thickened, deformed, and uplifted the crust across the Himalayas, Karakoram, and neighboring mountain regions.

Much of K2 consists of metamorphic rock known as K2 gneiss.

Gneiss forms when existing rocks are transformed by intense heat and pressure deep within the crust. Over long periods, tectonic uplift and erosion brought these rocks toward the surface, where glaciers and weather continued to sculpt the mountain.

K2’s characteristic pyramid reflects the combined effects of:

🧊 Glaciers and the Baltoro Region

The glaciers surrounding K2 are among the most spectacular features of the central Karakoram.

Godwin-Austen Glacier

The Godwin-Austen Glacier extends below K2 and Broad Peak, forming the main approach corridor for expeditions heading toward their base camps.

Its debris-covered surface, shifting ice, meltwater channels, and surrounding mountain walls make travel physically demanding even before technical climbing begins.

Baltoro Glacier

The Baltoro Glacier is one of the best-known glaciers in the Karakoram and one of the great nonpolar glacier systems.

It provides the traditional approach to several major mountains, including K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II.

Travel across the glacier involves unstable moraine, exposed ice, rough terrain, changing stream crossings, and high-altitude camps.

Concordia

Concordia is the famous glacial meeting place near the upper Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glacier systems.

From this extraordinary location, trekkers can see several towering peaks, including K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV, and surrounding mountain walls.

It is often considered one of the most impressive mountain viewpoints in the world.

The Karakoram Anomaly

Some Karakoram glaciers have behaved differently from many other mountain glaciers around the world.

While numerous glaciers globally have experienced substantial retreat, certain Karakoram glaciers have remained relatively stable, advanced, or undergone rapid surges during particular periods.

Scientists refer to this complex pattern as the Karakoram anomaly.

🧗 Climbing History

Early Attempts

The first major recorded attempt to climb K2 took place in 1902.

The expedition included Oscar Eckenstein, Aleister Crowley, and several other climbers. They investigated possible routes but were unable to reach the summit.

In 1909, an expedition led by the Duke of the Abruzzi explored the mountain’s southeast ridge.

Although the team did not climb K2, the ridge eventually became known as the Abruzzi Spur, the route later used for the first successful ascent.

American expeditions in 1938, 1939, and 1953 further explored the mountain and helped establish the difficulties of its upper slopes.

The 1953 expedition became especially famous for an emergency descent during which climber Pete Schoening arrested a fall involving multiple teammates. The incident remains one of mountaineering’s best-known examples of teamwork under extreme pressure.

First Ascent in 1954

K2 was first climbed on July 31, 1954, by Italian mountaineers Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli.

They belonged to an expedition led by Italian geologist and explorer Ardito Desio.

The team followed the Abruzzi Spur and established a series of camps on the mountain’s southeast ridge.

The summit success depended on the work of a much larger expedition, including Italian climber Walter Bonatti and Pakistani high-altitude porter Amir Mahdi.

Bonatti and Mahdi carried essential oxygen equipment toward the highest camp but were forced to spend the night exposed at extreme altitude. Mahdi suffered severe frostbite.

The circumstances surrounding that night became the subject of a long-running controversy, particularly regarding the treatment and recognition of Bonatti and Mahdi.

Their role remains an essential part of understanding the complete history of K2’s first ascent.

First Woman to Climb K2

Polish mountaineer Wanda Rutkiewicz became the first woman to reach the summit of K2 in 1986.

Her ascent marked a major achievement in high-altitude mountaineering during a season that also brought multiple tragedies on the mountain.

Rutkiewicz later became known as one of the most accomplished climbers of her generation.

❄️ First Winter Ascent

For decades, K2 remained the only recognized eight-thousander without a successful winter ascent.

Winter conditions on the mountain are exceptionally severe, with extreme cold, intense winds, reduced daylight, unstable weather, and the constant physiological strain of climbing above 8,000 meters.

On January 16, 2021, a team of 10 Nepali climbers reached the summit together, completing the first winter ascent of K2.

The 2021 ascent placed their skill, leadership, teamwork, and endurance at the center of one of mountaineering’s last great firsts.

K2 Base Camp Trek

The K2 Base Camp trek allows experienced trekkers to see the mountain without attempting its summit.

The traditional approach begins near Askole and follows the Braldu Valley toward the Baltoro Glacier.

The Abruzzi Spur, also called the Southeast Ridge, is K2’s standard climbing route.

It rises above the Godwin-Austen Glacier and follows a succession of steep rock ribs, snow slopes, ice sections, and exposed ridgelines.

The Bottleneck

The Bottleneck is a narrow, steep section high on K2 near the summit.

Climbers passing through this area are exposed to enormous overhanging ice formations called seracs.

A serac collapse can occur with little warning and may destroy fixed ropes or block the main descent route.

The Bottleneck played a central role in the 2008 K2 disaster, when 11 climbers died during a series of accidents involving delays, falling ice, and difficult conditions high on the mountain.

Its danger comes not only from technical difficulty but also from the fact that climbers encounter it after already spending hours at extreme altitude.

Česen Route

The Česen Route, also known as the Basque Route or South-Southeast Spur, climbs a separate line before joining the Abruzzi route higher on the mountain.

It avoids some terrain on the lower Abruzzi Spur, including the Black Pyramid, but remains highly exposed and dangerous.

The route still requires climbers to confront the upper mountain’s extreme altitude and difficult summit terrain.

North Ridge

The North Ridge approaches K2 from the Chinese side.

Extreme Altitude

The summit stands well within the “death zone,” the high-altitude region above approximately 8,000 meters where the human body cannot acclimatize indefinitely.

At this elevation, climbers face exhaustion, impaired judgment, frostbite, altitude illness, and potentially fatal complications affecting the lungs or brain.

Sustained Steepness

K2 rises sharply above its surrounding glaciers.

Its routes contain prolonged sections of exposed rock, steep snow, ice climbing, and difficult traverses, leaving little opportunity for relaxed movement or easy retreat.

Unstable Weather

The mountain is exposed to powerful storms and high winds.

Even during the summer climbing season, weather windows can close quickly, trapping climbers high on the mountain or making descent extremely dangerous.
