Bill Williams Mountain

Rising immediately south of the historic Route 66 town of Williams, Bill Williams Mountain is one of the most prominent volcanic summits of northern Arizona. The forested mountain reaches approximately 9,260 feet and towers more than 2,300 feet above its key saddle, making it a major landmark on the western side of the San Francisco Volcanic Field.
Bill Williams Mountain is geologically older than better-known volcanic landmarks farther east, including Kendrick Peak and the San Francisco Peaks. Its complex of dacite domes, lava flows, and intrusive rocks began forming more than three million years ago, making it one of the oldest major volcanic centers in the field.
Today, the mountain is one of the signature hiking destinations of Kaibab National Forest. Bill Williams Mountain Trail #21 climbs from the outskirts of Williams through ponderosa pine, oak, aspen, fir, and mixed-conifer forest before reaching a summit occupied by a historic fire lookout and communications facilities.

Modern LiDAR data places the summit at approximately 9,260.1 feet, with 2,320 feet of clean prominence and nearly 15 miles of isolation.
🌋 A Major Volcano of Northern Arizona
Bill Williams Mountain belongs to the San Francisco Volcanic Field, an enormous volcanic region extending across much of northern Arizona around Flagstaff and Williams.
The field contains more than 600 volcanic vents and includes everything from small basaltic cinder cones to large lava domes and composite volcanic mountains. The most famous feature is the San Francisco Peaks, whose highest summit, Humphreys Peak, is also the highest point in Arizona.
Bill Williams Mountain lies at the western edge of this volcanic landscape and is one of the field’s oldest major silicic volcanic centers. USGS research identifies Bill Williams Mountain, Sitgreaves Mountain, Kendrick Peak, San Francisco Mountain, and O’Leary Peak as five of the principal intermediate-to-silicic volcanic centers in the region.
🪨 Geology of Bill Williams Mountain
Bill Williams Mountain is not a simple cinder cone.
Instead, it is a complicated volcanic complex made primarily of dacite, a silica-rich volcanic rock compositionally between andesite and rhyolite.
The central mountain consists of thick dacite flows and intrusive rocks. Around this central core are additional dacite lava domes and flows, some of which form steep ridges radiating outward from the mountain.
USGS mapping has identified lava domes around the summit and on the mountain’s outer flanks. Some individual domes are more than a mile across and several hundred feet high.
The result is the broad, rugged mountain visible today rather than the symmetrical cone people might expect from a volcano.

🕰️ More Than Three Million Years Old
Volcanic activity at Bill Williams Mountain occurred primarily between roughly 4.2 and 3.5 million years ago.
Individual dacite domes have produced radiometric ages ranging from approximately 4.22 million to 3.59 million years, while rocks forming much of the central complex have been dated to about 3.56 million years.
This makes Bill Williams substantially older than several major volcanic mountains farther east.
Kendrick Peak formed later, while the huge volcano that became the San Francisco Peaks developed later still.
The progression reflects a general eastward migration of volcanic activity across northern Arizona.
🧭 The Mesa Butte Fault System
Bill Williams Mountain, Sitgreaves Mountain, and Kendrick Peak form a striking northeast-trending line across northern Arizona.
This alignment is closely associated with the Mesa Butte fault system, a major zone of ancient crustal weakness extending across the region.
Faults and fractures can provide pathways for magma rising through Earth’s crust. Geologists believe these preexisting structures played an important role in determining where several of northern Arizona’s large volcanic centers developed.
The three mountains also become progressively younger toward the northeast: Bill Williams Mountain is oldest, Sitgreaves is younger, and Kendrick is younger still.
⛰️ Sitgreaves Mountain — The Nearest Higher Neighbor
Bill Williams Mountain’s Nearest Higher Neighbor is Sitgreaves Mountain.
Sitgreaves reaches approximately 9,392 feet northeast of Williams, only modestly higher than Bill Williams Mountain.
The two peaks are separated by nearly 15 miles of lower terrain, giving Bill Williams considerable independence.
With approximately 2,320 feet of prominence, Bill Williams Mountain is one of northern Arizona’s more prominent summits and appears on lists of Arizona peaks with at least 2,000 feet of topographic prominence.
Farther northeast, Kendrick Peak rises above 10,400 feet, while the distant San Francisco Peaks reach more than 12,600 feet.
🌲 Forests of Bill Williams Mountain
Bill Williams Mountain rises directly out of northern Arizona’s great ponderosa pine belt.
Lower slopes are dominated by ponderosa pine and Gambel oak, creating the open, sunny forest characteristic of the Colorado Plateau.
As hikers climb higher, the environment becomes cooler and moister.
Aspen begins appearing along drainages and protected slopes, while Douglas-fir, white fir, and other mixed-conifer species become increasingly common near the upper mountain. The Forest Service describes Bill Williams Mountain Trail #21 as passing from ponderosa pine and oak into stands of aspen and fir with lush understory vegetation.
The vegetation change is particularly noticeable along West Cataract Creek.
🍂 Autumn on Bill Williams Mountain
Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons on Bill Williams Mountain.
Aspen groves scattered across the upper slopes turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold, contrasting sharply with dark green conifers.
Gambel oak can add orange, rust, and reddish tones at somewhat lower elevations.
Because the mountain rises immediately above Williams, its changing foliage is visible from town and from Interstate 40.
Late September through October is generally the most likely period for autumn color, although timing varies from year to year depending on elevation, temperature, rainfall, and early freezes.
🥾 Bill Williams Mountain Trail #21
The classic hiking route is Bill Williams Mountain Trail #21.
The trail begins near the Williams Ranger District facilities on the northern side of the mountain at approximately 7,000 feet.
From almost the beginning, the route climbs steadily.
The trail passes through ponderosa pine and oak before crossing West Cataract Creek and entering increasingly cool forest dominated by aspen, fir, and other high-elevation vegetation.
The route is approximately four miles one way, making the complete summit outing roughly 7.5 to 8 miles round trip depending on the exact turnaround and GPS measurement. The climb gains well over 2,000 vertical feet.
🥾 The Climb to the Summit
Bill Williams Mountain Trail #21 is straightforward to follow but physically demanding.
Much of the difficulty comes from the relentless elevation gain. The mountain rises sharply above Williams, so hikers spend much of the outbound journey climbing.
Upper sections eventually cross the summit access road.
A final stretch leads toward the broad summit area, where communications equipment and the fire lookout come into view.
The forest limits distant views along portions of the ascent, but occasional openings reveal the town of Williams, surrounding plateau, and other volcanic mountains.
🌲 Benham Trail #38
Another important route on Bill Williams Mountain is Benham Trail #38.
The trail climbs the eastern side of the mountain through ponderosa pine, oak, and mixed-conifer forest.
The route is approximately 4.5 miles long and can be connected with Bill Williams Mountain Trail #21 to create a longer through-hike of roughly 8.5 miles.
Benham Trail also holds an interesting cultural distinction.
Official trail information notes that Bill Williams Mountain marks a traditional boundary associated with lands inhabited by ancestors of the Hopi people and asks visitors to use the mountain respectfully.
🥾 Other Trails
Bill Williams Mountain contains an extensive network of forest trails beyond the main summit route.
Bixler Saddle Trail #72 approaches the western side of the mountain and can be incorporated into longer loops.
Clover Spring Loop Trail #46 and Buckskinner Trail #130 provide additional connections lower on the mountain.
The trail network gives hikers opportunities ranging from short forest walks to all-day outings linking several routes.
Because wildfire, logging, seasonal weather, and forest restoration work can temporarily affect access, hikers should check current Kaibab National Forest information before setting out.

🔥 Bill Williams Mountain Fire Lookout
One of the mountain’s most recognizable features is the Bill Williams Mountain fire lookout.
Fire detection from the summit has a history extending back more than a century.
Forest Service historical records state that Rangers Benham and Sevier built the first Bill Williams lookout in 1910. It was an extremely simple structure: a lookout platform constructed in a low tree.
The system later evolved into a substantial steel tower.
A 45-foot Aermotor lookout tower was erected on the summit in 1937, during the great expansion of Forest Service fire-detection infrastructure in the 1930s.
✈️ An Airway Beacon on the Mountain
The 1937 tower also carried an unusual piece of transportation history.
A light mounted above the lookout cabin formed part of the system of airway beacons that helped guide early night airmail pilots across northern Arizona.
Before modern electronic navigation became widespread, chains of illuminated beacons helped pilots follow transcontinental air routes after dark.
Historic Forest Service photographs from 1938 show the lamp mounted above the Bill Williams lookout cab.
That combination of wildfire detection and aviation navigation makes the summit lookout an especially interesting piece of northern Arizona history.
🧔 Who Was Bill Williams?
The mountain was named for William Sherley Williams, better known as Old Bill Williams.
Born in the late eighteenth century, Williams became one of the American West’s best-known mountain men. He worked as a trapper, trader, hunter, interpreter, and guide and became especially respected for his knowledge of Indigenous languages and the geography of the West.
Williams traveled widely across the Rocky Mountains and Southwest during the first half of the nineteenth century.
He later served as a guide during John C. Frémont’s disastrous 1848–49 winter expedition through the southern Rocky Mountains.
Williams survived the expedition itself but was killed in Colorado in 1849 while returning to recover equipment left behind.
🏘️ The Town of Williams
The mountain gave its name indirectly to the community at its northern foot.
The city of Williams was named for Bill Williams Mountain, which had already been named for Old Bill Williams.
The town developed along the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad during the late nineteenth century and later became one of the celebrated communities of historic Route 66. National Register documentation describes Williams as lying at approximately 6,770 feet along the northeastern base of the mountain.
Today, Williams is widely known as the Gateway to the Grand Canyon, and Bill Williams Mountain forms the unmistakable backdrop to the town.
🏔️ Did Bill Williams Die on the Mountain?
An old legend claims that Bill Williams is buried on the summit of the mountain bearing his name.
He is not.
The story was repeated in early tourism promotion, including material associated with the Santa Fe Railway, and became part of local folklore.
Historical evidence places Williams’ death in southern Colorado in 1849, where he was killed during an encounter with Utes.
The legend nevertheless became firmly attached to the mountain and continues to appear in retellings of Williams-area history.
🦌 Wildlife
Bill Williams Mountain provides excellent habitat for many of northern Arizona’s characteristic forest animals.
Elk roam the mountain and surrounding Kaibab National Forest, particularly around meadows and forest openings.
Mule deer are also common, while black bears and mountain lions inhabit the wider region but are far more difficult to see.
Wild turkeys move through forest openings and oak woodland.
Birdlife includes Steller’s jays, ravens, woodpeckers, nuthatches, mountain chickadees, hawks, and numerous migratory songbirds.
Aspen groves and wetter drainages add valuable habitat diversity to the otherwise extensive ponderosa pine landscape.

🌄 Views From the Summit
The summit provides extensive views across the western San Francisco Volcanic Field and the Colorado Plateau.
Williams lies almost directly below the mountain to the north.
To the northeast rise Sitgreaves Mountain and Kendrick Peak.
Farther east, the massive San Francisco Peaks dominate the skyline, crowned by Humphreys Peak.
The landscape surrounding Bill Williams also contains dozens of smaller volcanic hills, cinder cones, forested ridges, and broad meadows.
On especially clear days, the summit provides an extraordinary sense of the scale of northern Arizona’s volcanic country.
❄️ Seasons and Weather
Bill Williams Mountain receives considerably more snow than the lower desert regions of Arizona.
Winter storms can cover the summit deeply, and snow may remain on shaded upper slopes into spring.
The normal hiking season is generally late spring through fall, although conditions vary substantially from year to year.
Summer temperatures are usually comfortable compared with Arizona’s low deserts, but July and August bring the North American monsoon. Thunderstorms can develop rapidly during the afternoon, producing lightning, hail, heavy rain, and sudden temperature drops. The Forest Service warns that summer thunderstorms build quickly across Kaibab National Forest.
Autumn often brings some of the mountain’s most stable and visually striking conditions.
⚠️ Hiking Safety
Although Bill Williams Mountain Trail is maintained and begins close to town, it should still be treated as a substantial mountain hike.
The climb gains more than 2,000 feet and reaches elevations above 9,000 feet.
Carry plenty of water because reliable drinking water is not available along the trail.
Hikers arriving from low elevations may notice the effects of altitude, particularly during the sustained climb.
Watch the weather carefully during monsoon season and avoid exposed summit areas when thunderstorms are approaching.
In winter and early spring, snow and ice can substantially increase the difficulty of the trail.
🌋 One of the Oldest Giants of the San Francisco Volcanic Field
Bill Williams Mountain occupies an important place in northern Arizona’s volcanic history.
USGS research describes Bill Williams Mountain and nearby basaltic cones as among the oldest volcanic features of the San Francisco Volcanic Field.
From Bill Williams, major silicic volcanic centers become progressively younger toward the northeast through Sitgreaves Mountain and Kendrick Peak before reaching the much younger volcanic landscape around Flagstaff.
In that sense, hiking Bill Williams Mountain is also a journey onto one of the foundations of northern Arizona’s extraordinary volcanic landscape.
🌲 Why Bill Williams Mountain Is Special
Bill Williams Mountain brings together geology, hiking, ecology, and Arizona history in a single prominent landmark.
It is a nearly 9,300-foot volcanic mountain with more than 2,300 feet of prominence, an early center of the San Francisco Volcanic Field, and the mountain that gave the town of Williams its name.
Its slopes contain ponderosa pine forests, oak woodland, cool aspen groves, and mixed-conifer habitat. Its summit preserves more than a century of fire-lookout history, including a remarkable connection with the early days of night aviation.
And unlike many major northern Arizona summits, Bill Williams rises directly beside a town.
From historic Route 66 in Williams, hikers can look south toward the forested summit and then climb from town-level ponderosa pine almost to 9,300 feet.
Together with Sitgreaves Mountain, Kendrick Peak, and the San Francisco Peaks, Bill Williams Mountain tells one of the most fascinating chapters in the volcanic story of northern Arizona.
