Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain is one of the best-known peaks of California’s Eastern Sierra, but it is very different geologically from many of the granite summits surrounding it. Rather than being primarily an uplifted granitic peak, Mammoth Mountain is a volcanic lava-dome complex built by repeated eruptions along the southwestern edge of the Long Valley Caldera. Mammoth Mountain lies in the eastern Sierra Nevada near the town of Mammoth Lakes, roughly along the boundary between Mono and Madera counties.
