Lassen Peak, also known as Mount Lassen, is an active volcanic mountain in Northern California and the highest point in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Rising to a traditionally cited elevation of 10,457 feet, it stands near the southern end of the Cascade Range and forms one of California’s most recognizable volcanic landmarks.

Unlike the steep, symmetrical stratovolcanoes commonly associated with the Cascades, Lassen Peak is a massive plug-dome volcano. 📍 Location

Lassen Peak rises within Lassen Volcanic National Park in Shasta County, Northern California. The mountain stands approximately 55 miles east of Redding and occupies a transition zone between the southern Cascades, the northern Sierra Nevada, and the volcanic landscapes of northeastern California.

The summit is positioned near the center of the park, immediately north of Lake Helen and the Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway. California State Route 89 crosses the park and provides access to the Lassen Peak trailhead when seasonal conditions allow.

Nearby communities include Mineral, Chester, Shingletown, and Viola. Visitors approaching from the southwest generally enter near the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, while travelers coming from the northwest typically arrive through the Manzanita Lake area.

The broader region has deep cultural significance for several Indigenous communities. 📏 Elevation & Prominence

Lassen Peak is traditionally listed at 10,457 feet, or 3,187 meters, an elevation still used in National Park Service visitor information and widely repeated in maps and mountain references.

More recent LiDAR-based measurements provide a slightly higher figure. Peakbagger currently lists the summit at approximately 10,461.7 feet, usually rounded to 10,462 feet or 3,189 meters.

The difference reflects updated measurement methods rather than a dramatic change in the mountain’s physical height.

Lassen Peak’s current Peakbagger prominence is approximately 5,246 feet, or 1,599 meters. Older references commonly give a prominence of about 5,229 feet, but newer elevation and key-col measurements have revised that figure upward.

Because its prominence exceeds 1,500 meters, Lassen qualifies as an ultra-prominent peak. This classification highlights how strongly the mountain rises above its broader surroundings.

Its topographic isolation is approximately 71.37 miles, with Shastarama Point identified as the nearest higher neighboring summit. Shastarama Point lies on the southeastern side of Mount Shasta.

Interestingly, Lassen Peak’s topographic line parent is not Mount Shasta. Peakbagger identifies Highland Peak–South Peak in the Sierra Nevada as the line parent because topographic parentage depends on connecting ridgelines and key saddles, not simply the nearest taller mountain.

🪨 Geology

A Massive Plug-Dome Volcano

Lassen Peak is one of the world’s largest plug-dome volcanoes. Plug domes develop when thick, viscous lava emerges from a volcanic vent but does not flow easily across the surrounding landscape.

Instead, the lava piles up around the vent, gradually building a steep-sided, rounded mass of volcanic rock.

Lassen Peak consists largely of dacite, a silica-rich volcanic rock associated with relatively viscous magma. Its present dome formed approximately 27,000 years ago on the northern flank of an older volcano known as Mount Tehama, or Brokeoff Volcano.

Mount Tehama was once a much larger composite volcano. Over time, erosion and hydrothermal alteration destroyed much of its original structure, leaving behind remnants such as Brokeoff Mountain and Mount Diller.

Lassen Peak later rose from this older volcanic terrain, becoming the dominant summit of the modern Lassen volcanic center.

Glaciers and Volcanic Erosion

After Lassen Peak formed, glaciers and repeated winter snow accumulation reshaped its slopes. Moving ice carved into the dome, while freezing, thawing, and rockfall produced extensive fields of broken volcanic debris.

The resulting landscape is less symmetrical than many other Cascade volcanoes. Instead of a smooth cone, Lassen has irregular ridges, steep rocky faces, talus slopes, and a summit area marked by volcanic craters.

These features are especially visible from Lake Helen, the park highway, and the upper sections of the Lassen Peak Trail.

The 1914–1917 Eruptions

Lassen Peak’s most recent major eruptive episode began on May 30, 1914, when a steam-driven explosion opened a vent near the summit.

Over the following year, repeated explosions enlarged the crater. By May 1915, lava appeared at the summit, signaling a change from primarily steam-driven activity to a more complex eruptive sequence.

The most powerful eruption occurred on May 22, 1915.

An explosive blast generated a pyroclastic flow that devastated terrain northeast of the mountain. Volcanic debris and melting snow produced mudflows, or lahars, that traveled more than 12 miles down surrounding drainages.

Fine volcanic ash was reported more than 200 miles away in Nevada.

The affected landscape northeast of the summit became known as the Devastated Area, where visitors can still explore evidence of the eruption and observe how vegetation has gradually returned.

Intermittent activity continued until approximately 1917. These eruptions helped drive the establishment of Lassen Volcanic National Park in 1916.

Is Lassen Peak Still Active?

Despite the stark appearance of Lassen Peak’s upper slopes, the mountain and surrounding national park support a diverse range of plant communities and wildlife habitats.

Vegetation changes noticeably with elevation. Lower areas support mixed conifer forests containing ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, and white fir. Higher elevations transition into red fir forests with mountain hemlock, western white pine, and lodgepole pine.

Around the Lassen Peak trailhead and lower summit trail, hikers encounter twisted mountain hemlocks and resilient whitebark pines. These trees are adapted to heavy snow, strong winds, short growing seasons, and nutrient-poor volcanic soils.

Subalpine wildflowers include lupine, Indian paintbrush, penstemon, rock spirea, and other hardy species capable of growing in rocky, exposed conditions. Near the summit, vegetation becomes sparse as volcanic debris, wind exposure, and prolonged snow cover create an especially difficult environment.

The surrounding park is home to approximately 57 mammal species. Common or notable animals include mule deer, black bears, golden-mantled ground squirrels, chipmunks, snowshoe hares, and American pikas.

Pikas are particularly well suited to rocky high-elevation habitats. These small relatives of rabbits shelter among talus slopes, where they gather vegetation during summer and store it for colder months.

Lassen Volcanic National Park also provides habitat for the rare Sierra Nevada red fox, although sightings are uncommon.

Birdlife includes Clark’s nutcrackers, mountain chickadees, juncos, western tanagers, and various hawks and other raptors. Clark’s nutcrackers play an especially important ecological role by carrying and caching whitebark pine seeds across mountain landscapes.

Wildlife should always be observed from a distance, and hikers should avoid feeding squirrels, chipmunks, or other animals along popular trails.

Lassen Peak Trail

The standard route to the summit is the Lassen Peak Trail, a maintained hiking trail beginning at the Lassen Peak parking area along the main park highway.

The National Park Service describes the hike as strenuous, with a round-trip distance of approximately 5 miles and an elevation gain of about 1,957 feet.

The trail begins near 8,500 feet, so hikers are already at a considerable elevation before starting the climb. Most people require approximately four to five hours to complete the round trip, although timing varies with fitness, weather, snow conditions, and time spent exploring the summit.

Initially, the route passes through scattered mountain hemlock and whitebark pine. The trees quickly thin as the trail climbs above the surrounding lakes and volcanic ridges.

Higher on the mountain, the path follows a series of switchbacks across exposed slopes of volcanic rock and loose gravel. Views open toward Lake Helen, Brokeoff Mountain, Mount Diller, and the greater Lassen region.

The maintained trail reaches an initial summit area with interpretive signs and broad views. Hikers may continue carefully toward the true summit or explore portions of the volcanic crater when conditions are safe.

On clear days, Mount Shasta is visible to the north, while the surrounding panorama includes volcanic domes, forests, alpine lakes, and the remnants of older volcanic mountains.

Trail Safety and Preparation

Although the route does not usually require technical climbing skills during snow-free conditions, it should not be treated as an easy walk.

The high starting elevation, steady ascent, exposed terrain, and loose volcanic footing can make the climb physically demanding. Afternoon thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and sudden temperature changes are also possible.

Snowfields can remain on the trail well into summer. Depending on conditions, hikers may need trekking poles, traction devices, sturdy footwear, and the judgment to turn around when a crossing becomes unsafe.

The National Park Service emphasizes that hikers should remain on the established trail and avoid cutting switchbacks. Leaving the route accelerates erosion, damages fragile slopes, and can dislodge rocks onto people hiking below.

Winter Ascents

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

The best time to hike Lassen Peak is generally mid-summer through early fall, when the park highway is open and the summit trail has fewer lingering snow hazards.

July, August, and September often provide the most reliable access. However, conditions vary considerably from year to year, and snow may persist into summer after a heavy winter.

Early morning starts offer cooler temperatures, easier parking, and a better chance of finishing before afternoon thunderstorms develop. Morning light also creates excellent views of Lake Helen and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Late summer and early fall can bring wildfire smoke, temporary fire restrictions, and reduced visibility. Visitors should check current park alerts, air-quality conditions, road access, and trail reports before traveling.

By October, early winter storms can arrive with little warning. Snowfall is possible during any month at higher elevations, and the summit may be dramatically colder and windier than the trailhead.

Brokeoff Mountain rises to approximately 9,235 feet and is the second-highest major summit within Lassen Volcanic National Park.

The Brokeoff Mountain Trail is approximately 7.4 miles round trip and climbs through forests, meadows, and exposed alpine terrain. From the summit, hikers can look across the remnants of Mount Tehama toward Lassen Peak and distant Mount Shasta.

Bumpass Hell

Bumpass Hell is the park’s best-known hydrothermal basin. Its steaming fumaroles, boiling mudpots, and vividly colored mineral deposits offer a close look at the geothermal system associated with the Lassen volcanic center.

The main route is approximately 3 miles round trip. A boardwalk allows visitors to view hydrothermal features while avoiding dangerously thin ground and scalding water.

Lake Helen
