Mount Alverstone

Mount Alverstone rises to 14,500 feet (4,420 meters) in the spectacular Saint Elias Mountains, directly on the international boundary between Alaska and Canada’s Yukon Territory. Although overshadowed by some of the enormous summits surrounding it, including Mount Hubbard, Mount Alverstone is one of the highest mountains in both the United States and Canada.
The mountain is also known as Boundary Peak 180. Its summit occupies an important geographic position where the Alaska–Canada boundary changes direction. Alverstone belongs to the same great high-mountain massif as Mount Hubbard and Mount Kennedy, creating a formidable landscape of steep ridges, enormous glaciers, snowfields, and heavily crevassed ice.

Mount Alverstone is a remote, heavily glaciated peak in northwestern North America. Its summit lies almost exactly on the Alaska–Yukon boundary, with the American side associated with Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve and the Canadian side with Kluane National Park and Reserve.

Mount Alverstone stands deep within the Saint Elias Mountains, one of the highest and most heavily glaciated mountain regions in North America.
The summit forms part of the international boundary between Alaska and Yukon. It is especially significant because the border makes a pronounced turn in the vicinity of Alverstone and Mount Hubbard. From this mountain complex, the international boundary runs generally west toward Mount Saint Elias and south toward the Alaska Panhandle.
Mount Hubbard rises only a few kilometers south of Alverstone and is considerably higher. Mount Kennedy lies roughly east of Alverstone on the same broad mountain complex.

🪨 Geology
Mount Alverstone belongs to the geologically dynamic Saint Elias Mountains, a region shaped by powerful tectonic forces along the southern margin of Alaska.
Much of southern Alaska consists of crustal fragments, or accreted terranes, that became attached to North America through plate-tectonic processes. In the Saint Elias region, continuing convergence and compression have produced crustal thickening, faulting, uplift, earthquakes, and exceptionally high mountain terrain.
Glacial erosion works simultaneously with tectonic uplift. Vast quantities of ice grind through valleys, transport rock debris, steepen mountain faces, and expose fresh bedrock.
Mount Alverstone’s upper slopes combine snow, ice, exposed rock, steep ridges, and large cornices. Robert H. Bates’ account of the 1951 first ascent describes the party climbing a fractured granite rib near the summit pyramid before moving onto steep snow and ice.
These conditions make the mountain a classic example of the rugged alpine environment found throughout the highest parts of the Saint Elias Mountains.
🧊 Glaciers & Icefields
Ice dominates the landscape surrounding Mount Alverstone.
The peak is associated with several major glaciers. The Alverstone Glacier lies on the western side of the massif, while the Dusty Glacier drains terrain to the northeast. The Cathedral Glacier lies southeast of the Hubbard–Alverstone massif and played an important role in the 1951 expedition.
The broader Kluane–Saint Elias landscape contains some of the greatest concentrations of mountain ice outside the polar regions. Parks Canada reports that mountains and ice make up about 82% of Kluane National Park and Reserve, and some of the area’s icefields reach extraordinary thicknesses.
Heavy snowfall results partly from moist Pacific air being forced upward across the Saint Elias Mountains. This combination of abundant snowfall, high elevations, and enormous accumulation zones has created vast interconnected glacier systems.
🌿 Flora & Fauna
The summit and upper slopes of Mount Alverstone are overwhelmingly environments of rock, snow, and permanent or semi-permanent ice. Vegetation at these elevations is extremely limited.
Much richer ecosystems occur at lower elevations throughout the surrounding Kluane and Wrangell–St. Elias landscapes. Depending on elevation and exposure, the wider region transitions through boreal forest, shrub communities, alpine tundra, barren rock, and glacier ice.
The larger Saint Elias ecosystem supports animals including:

Mount Alverstone is not a hiking mountain. There is no maintained trail to its summit, and reaching the mountain itself requires expedition-style travel in one of North America’s most remote glaciated environments.

In July 1951, Walter Wood, Peter Wood, Robert H. Bates, and Nicholas Clifford climbed Mount Alverstone during an Arctic Institute of North America expedition that also achieved the first ascent of Mount Hubbard.
After climbing Hubbard, the team approached Alverstone from their high camp on the plateau between the two mountains. Bates described Alverstone as the more technically serious of the two objectives. The climbers followed a fractured rock rib before traversing steep ice and snow toward the summit ridge, where they encountered an enormous cornice.
Their descent became particularly dangerous when deteriorating weather brought strong winds, blowing snow, and rapidly worsening visibility.
The expedition remains one of the landmark early mountaineering achievements in the Saint Elias Mountains.

📜 First Ascent & Naming History
Mount Alverstone was first climbed in 1951 by Walter Wood, Peter Wood, Robert H. Bates, and Nicholas Clifford. Their expedition was conducting scientific work as well as mountaineering, including research into glaciers and snow and ice mechanics.
The expedition successfully climbed both Mount Hubbard and Mount Alverstone.
Its achievements were followed by tragedy. While the climbing team was still in the mountains, an expedition aircraft disappeared carrying pilot Maurice King along with Walter Wood’s wife, Foresta, and daughter, Valerie. An extensive search failed to locate them. Bates later described the loss in his account of the expedition.
The mountain itself had been named decades earlier.
The name Mount Alverstone was adopted in 1908 in honor of Richard Everard Webster, Viscount Alverstone, who served as Lord Chief Justice of England. He had also participated in the 1903 Alaska Boundary Tribunal, where his vote was decisive in resolving disputed portions of the Alaska–Canada boundary.

There is no conventional tourist season for climbing Mount Alverstone.
High-elevation conditions remain severe throughout the year, and expedition timing depends on glacier conditions, snowfall, temperatures, storm patterns, aircraft access, and the specific route chosen.
Summer provides extremely long daylight hours in the Saint Elias region. During the 1951 expedition, the climbers took advantage of the near-continuous summer twilight, sometimes traveling at night when colder temperatures produced firmer snow surfaces.
Even during favorable periods, however, Pacific storms can arrive quickly and produce whiteout conditions, strong winds, heavy snowfall, and dangerous changes in glacier conditions.
Travelers who simply want to experience the Saint Elias Mountains have far more accessible opportunities around Kluane National Park and Reserve and Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve without attempting Mount Alverstone itself.
